Instead of asking how much he believed or making any snide comments about Alice, her hand was placed on his cheek and tilting his head up to meet her gaze. “She hasn’t said any ‘I’ll expose you and then kill you if you try to leave town’ threats again. We’ll run away together, and it’d be super cool and super romantic. You’ll write songs and they’ll be, like, crazy successful. It’ll be a total Fast Car moment.” Of course, it was easier to offer up that kind of grand commitment when it was an impossible situation. That they’d never have to call their own bluff’s, even though she pressed her lips against Mackenzie’s as a promise. “We could go to,” a quick pause to weigh up their options, as if they had the resources or free will to leave town. “Hawaii! I could get a sexy tan. Or New York. It always looks so glamorous on TV. Plus, all of those places are so Not Cherry. No one would even bat an eye at us being... y’know. An us.”

The popular crowd of Cherry weren’t really friends. Though the same argument could be made for the gang, yet they were still dragging each other into the jaws of danger! Something about it being Harvey made things a little more complicated. Maybe because he was one of the few that happened to be in both of those groups. Maybe because he had at one point been so important to Audrina and Lux, which meant Kitty’s loyalty was pretty much guaranteed.

Audrina. So much for loyalty there. What were the girl code rules when visiting your best friend’s ex-boyfriend in the hospital behind her back? Especially with ‘Sorry for being a brat that didn’t take your haunting seriously’ flowers. Jury was still out about whether it was better or worse that Harvey let her keep them because she obviously liked them more than he ever would. “It’s really nice to see you again,” Kitty greeted with a Barbie-level fake smile. “You know, without all the creepy ghost things or just as bad hospital lighting.” Even though the two weren’t comparable.

In the wake of Candy’s destruction, Kitty wouldn’t have been surprised if her endless knocking at the door and calling out went ignored until Ronnie was sent out to tell her to get lost. If there was one thing Kitty Maddox had perfected, it was the art of being annoying. Turns out it was a lot harder to get Noah’s time and attention when he wasn’t fawning over her. The thought that he had heard her voice and turned away because they weren’t exactly on the best of terms lingered in the back of her mind. Something would no doubt get ranted to Zahra and Audrina whilst still swearing she didn’t care.

She was at his doorstep to check on him because she didn’t care. How believable! Surely she could just blame the sappy empathy on spending too much time around Mackenzie Walsh and roll her eyes about it later. Once she was sure Noah was... stable. “Look, Noah. I’m not here to make things worse,” she reasoned with a door, hoping there was someone- anyone behind it. Except Rory Collins. How embarrassing would that be? “Just open the door... Please.”

The desperate social climber and the cousin of one of the most popular girls in school, it’s not really a shocker when they became friends of sorts. Rory was probably too kind to say no to anyone seeking companionship, and Kitty knew when to play her cards. Plus, probably some lame sentiment about knowing when they hung out, Rory liked her for her rather than a minion for the popular girls or a step on the social ladder they were also trying to climb. Not that she’d ever be caught dead saying that! When she spotted the other girl with a moment alone, Kitty was throwing her arm around Rory’s shoulder. Totally not cool in a high-stress situation. “Hey, Ror Ror! I know lockdown is, like, a total bummer. Lambda Rho has some music going and I’m basically an expert at distractions. You should come hang out with me! I could do your makeup or something. Have you picked out your outfit yet? You know, the jury stand is still a stand. Plus, everyone knows it’s easier to hear bad news from someone super pretty. You could find them guilty and they’d still, like, adore you.”

Kitty had an almost seamless rotation of friends that would let her stay the night at theirs. Face masks, mani-pedis, gossiping about everyone else at school. Most importantly, getting out of her mom’s sorry excuse of a home. When it finally circled around to the time she’d ask Zahra, this funny feeling lingered afterwards. It was Rory’s house. Something that used to be really cool. Especially when it meant she spent an extra night there sleeping on the floor in Rory’s room instead. Now, however, it just felt awkward. Not like she could ask Zahra to come hang out at her’s either! “You know what we haven’t done in forever with all this craziness? Hung out at the Archer’s. The three of us, y’know? We should totally find Auds and plan something for like... I don’t know. Tonight? She’ll totally say yes to you.”

She called me pretty, which I am and then when I was leaving she told me to have a good day... and I like totally did!” None of which was compelling evidence, but Cristiano was probably the last person she’d have to convince on the subject. “Now that we know she was involved in all of this, why don’t we ask her to find Candy? She’s covering her tracks from us, but I bet she’s no match for... pixie dust or something. I don’t know. Your mom is the magical one, not me.”

Not only did she toss those out the window, but she shoveled the ground beneath her feet enough to lose second place to Wilfred- or whatever the third jury member’s name was. Truthfully, not something she had ever cared to learn. “From your perspective, how amazing was I? Did you totally believe my performance? Or whatever the actors say.” She basked in her own self-praise for a moment before a frown settled on her features. “Pilar isn’t gonna be mad at me for, like, screaming at her and stuff, right?”

When Audrina first let the news slip, Kitty didn’t believe her. Easier to write it off as some hazing or part of the chaos that always seemed to follow the other girl. Maybe payback for picking Zahra’s side one too many times or something like that. The more words that fell from scarlet red lips, the harder it got to deny things. Rory Collins had swooped in and stolen the boy everyone clearly knew was into Kitty. Do they arrest backstabbing best friends here too? Except this situation ticked off exactly zero of those boxes. Any third party would rule out backstabbing. Unless perhaps, that third party was Audrina Archer. Best friends was even more of a stretch. Everyone adored Rory, and though Kitty lacked non-transactional relationships, it didn’t mean everyone else was. An ounce of kindness in Kitty’s direction didn’t make her special. Case in point, deciding to set her sights on Noah Russell. Ugh! “That was like, totally crazy.” For someone so good at pretending, it was surprisingly difficult to muster up more than a few words to the other girl. “I was right about that eye shadow, by the way. You were questioning me and I, like, couldn’t stop staring.” Except for the moments she was checking to see if Noah was too, of course!

Mere hours ago when Kitty was flattered Candy Girl picked her to be one of the starring roles in her production had long since fizzled out. People were finding out plenty of things they didn’t want to know. A personal example is the large sum of money that had come into her family’s possession. The fact that all those years of not fitting in and thrifted clothes that never fit could have been avoided if Estelle Maddox weren’t so selfish. Of course, trying to call her mother out on it only ended with Kitty as the villain for participating in the trial at all. How dare she have such little respect for her family’s reputation. She couldn’t take a night home alone with that woman, so she was immediately searching the crowd for an escape. Maybe someone more shaken up than her so she could play this as a charitable thing.

As soon as she spotted Noah in the crowd, she made a beeline directly for him. If Audrina asked, she’d come up with some way to write this off as step one in a plan to meddle with the new crush she’d been told about just before the trial. In all honesty, it was because Noah had always been the one that seemed to stroke her bruised ego or mend a broken heart. Maybe because he was the only one that cared enough to try. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” she said with a sigh. “Have you talked to them already?”

You totally must have learnt from them.” There’s a part of her equally curious and hopeful about the possibility of Zahra, the actual law student, being upset about the other girl getting the role. Those two girls fighting used to mean the end of the world for Kitty. Always walking a tightrope where she might pick the wrong side and plummet back into social irrelevancy, but now that she’s sunk her claws into the life of a Cherry It Girl, those two destroying each other was almost best case scenario. “I’m so proud of you, girl! Show me your lawyer heels! I know you already have them picked out.”

The Mock Trial was turning out to be a total bummer, but probably not for the reasons most people were expecting. Yeah, Candy Girl showed up with one of her stupid riddles, but being surprised about her rearing her ugly head was so ‘98. Besides, she picked Kitty to be part of her little play. Could she really be completely mad when given such an important role? Maybe not a lead, but she’d still get to take the stand. Except the conversations were all on their missing sorority sister and the stupid riddle! So, Kitty did what was natural when seeking external validation. “Noah! There you are,” she cooed. He'd always been the type to drop everything for her and looked at her in a way that made her feel like the only girl in the room. “I’m, like, totally confused about this whole trail thing. Are we on the same side? Y’know, like a team? You’ll stay close through it, right?”

Defending Britney with her life. That was the excuse Kitty used to justify all the time she spent lingering by the boom box. If she left Mackenzie Walsh to his own devices, they’d probably be stuck listening to weird grungy boy bands. Not even the cute pop stars kind! Better selection for Kitty to choose from is the only reason she had grabbed his hand and dragged him to Blossom Records between leaving the actual party and arriving at afters. She was just saving the party, and it was actually totally selfless!

“See? The complaints have stopped,” Kitty teased, playfully bumping her shoulder against Mac’s. “I think DJ-ing is, like, my natural talent.” If you could ever call it that when she was just pointing to a song and letting him do all the work of changing it. “It’s like Cris said, I’m great at knowing what people want.” Had he meant it as a compliment? Who knows, but Kitty was in too good of a mood to consider otherwise.

“You know how there’s that... thing were people think you get good things because your parents are totally cool?” The word ‘nepotism’ far from being in Kitty’s everyday vocabulary. “There should be an opposite version of that where bad things happen because your parents suck and are lame.” Like Candy Girl showing not only you but the entire town that your mother lied in 1978 and then continued to lie when Bertram ran for Mayor. And that wasn’t even touching on the money she blew. “You should be glad you didn’t have to do the mock trial this year. It was like a weird Freaky Friday moment with everyone’s family drama for dinner and murder for dessert.” Although, you’d have to have been deaf to not hear Grace talking about how much she wanted to be involved. “Are there other acting things, or do you have to like... drop out or something?”

“I’m not saying ‘I told you so’.” Which was mostly true. If she wanted a nice break from Cherry, it didn’t make sense to pick a fight with one of the few people who genuinely liked her. Even if she wanted to scream about his moment with Libby, about the way she could swear he wasn’t as captivated by her as he had once been. Jealousy and insecurity more likely to make Kitty feel like shit than the constant cycle of drinking and hangovers while they were away. “But I knew they were going to be like this.” Which was totally unfair of Elaine since she was with Zev!

Of course, not many people had the guts to critique Elaine the way they did Kitty. “It’s so typical of her, but Harvey?” He had been so nice to her... and then just distance and that. Did Elaine hear something about them hanging out? Was that what she was mad about? Why she targeted him? “They’re supposed to be my friends,” the disappointment in her tone only allowed because it was Mac.

The last time Kitty talked to Noah, despite it revolving around the bomb Candy Girl had dropped, it was almost nice. At least, talking to him again was. That didn’t mean she was suddenly seeking him out. She was only going to the den to try to find a movie that Zahra, Elaine and Rory would all agree to kick everyone else out of the room for later that night. It did mean that the sight of him alone wasn’t shooting her guard back up and putting her on defense. Maybe some kind of happiness to see him without her friends around if you squinted.

“Thanks for putting all the food away.” It was the least he deserved after she had backtracked to only thank Elaine in front of everyone else. “I didn’t say that before.” Was it something she thought he’d hold against her? No, but it was what friends did, right? They were friends. At least, trying to be. That’s what the entire gang was supposed to be. “Are you enjoying yourself?”

Truth or dare always stirred up drama. Usually, she loved watching Elaine tear someone down. It was entertaining yet also inspiring. It usually wasn’t her. Technically, her question had been about Mac and his love life. AKA her worst kept secret. Harvey had been the one to name-drop her, but Elaine knew. She had to know from how she carried on about him to try and change her mind. More annoying than the discreet Kitty thought she was being.

“Why would she ask that?” Kitty blurted. “Last night. About Mac. Is she mad at me or something?” Would Elaine even tell Zahra if she was? “And Harvey’s, like, so wrong. Rockstars totally have skin in the game. I’m not pathetic.” More trying to convince herself than Zahra.
