Mini theory on what happened to Hades and Maleficent because I rewatched all the Descendants movies

In Descendants 1, when Maleficent talks about love, she calls it weak and ridiculous. She tells Mal it’s not what she wants and gets enraged when Mal calls it amazing.

In Descendants 3, Hades says Maleficent isn’t “the easiest to get along with.” He goes even as far to say he hates her.

But when we see them in Descendants Rise of Red, they’re very affectionate with each other and never argue. Something definitely happened between them the first 5 years of their imprisonment for them to hate each other.

Now, Maleficent is canonically very controlling. She likes things going her way and doesn’t like being disobeyed. We see this often whenever Mal doesn’t agree with her or doesn’t want to do something. We can see her controlling nature with things like her taking all the credit for the villains plans (which seems like they often have to correct her “my plan” with “our plan”). Maleficent is also very power hungry, she isn’t satisfied with just getting out of the isle like other characters, she’s not satisfied with simple revenge, she wants to rule all of Auradon.

Hades on the other hand, is stated to be unpredictable about a lot of things. Obviously this would make them clash often and would definitely cause arguments between them, especially considering Hades short temper. Hades also doesn’t seem to want to do stuff like rule Auradon. He simply wants to return to his kingdom and have his powers and status as a God returned. Yeah he might want revenge on Zeus, but it’s Zeus so understandable.

So I think they tried to work together and maintain their relationship like it was but ran into issues like Maleficents need to be in control and Hades hatred of being controlled. Hades had enough of Maleficents attitude, he was the god of the dead and she was just a fae, why would she be the one in control of everything? Hades found it best for him to leave, even if it meant not being around his daughter.

I also think that maybe at one point, Maleficent stopped seeing Hades as her lover and more like a conquest and proof of her skills and power. She’s the one who managed to tame a god and have him under her so of course she should be in charge! She’s the strongest, the meanest, and the wickedest of all!
