He shrugs his shoulders. “You can only put so many signs in front of people who refuse to read.”

He may not have been looking at first… but he can feel the weight of eyes upon his back all the same. It's not quite as piercing as the other stares he's received over the long years he's been alive, nor does it elicit his typical, quietly displeased exhale. The feeling is heavy, as all eyes are, but the way it settles on him…

Oh, the way it makes him feel is quite familiar.

He couldn't turn to find the owner of said gaze just yet — not wanting to interrupt his present conversation just to look around — but urge was there. In an instant, the words he'd been so very focused on meant… so little in that moment. They were important, yes, but the king found himself wanting the other to hurry their thoughts along and finish their sentence. He needed the conversation to end so he could focus his gaze elsewhere — so he could look.

When their scent eventually reaches him, that urge is made that much worse.

Roderick would be able to pick them out in a crowd even if he lost his sight… and, perhaps, that's exactly what made it so terrible. He knew it was them — knew it was Eleare — but could do very little with this knowledge. The king could turn, find them, and meet their gaze… but that's it. He could not go to them, could not utter their name, he could not touch them, and those three things alone were enough. It made knowing that the inari was close all that more painful for him. The years of longing and yearning that welled up in his chest right then had to be swallowed with the next exhale he gave. He had to focus on the conversation at hand… he could not be selfish, as much as he wanted to be.

— and because he could not be selfish, he's only allowed that chance he sought a moment too late. The being he'd been talking to steps away, pulled into another conversation with another, and Roderick takes that opportunity to look back.

As he suspects, he just barely catches the telltale red of Eleare's tails disappearing into the crowd. He isn't offered the opportunity to stare much longer but… oh, how he misses them.

If not for the looming threat over his head, he'd go after them in a heartbeat.

They had been talking to Antale and their elder two children when Eleare catches a familiar scent in the air. Even after years and years, the recognition still had their ears pricking upwards immediately. Their pupils dilating, and their posture straightening as they looked around for the source.

When they first lay eyes on Roderick, he has his back turned to them...but the sight is still enough to have their breath catch in their throat.

Oh, how badly they want to run to him. To call for him, reach for him, anything to have his attention on them. As embarrassing as it was, it seemed that time had only served to further stoke their longing and affections toward the feared and illustrious dragon king.

"Eleare..."

There's a large, warm hand on their shoulder-- Antale's-- and they look up at him with a barely there whine. Eyes pleading as if to ask for permission that they didn't dare to grant themself.

"I know...I know. But you've made it this long, haven't you? You'll never forgive yourself if you give in now. C'mon, let's go check on the kits..."

It's begrudging, but they eventually give a small nod. The twins had since noticed Roderick and gone to say hello, and Eleare can't help but be a bit jealous that they're able to approach him so freely. They think to call them back-- unsure of how it might look if their children were around Roderick even if they weren't-- but they stop themself.

One last look is given at the dragon king, before the fox reluctantly turns away...only just missing Roderick's gaze as he noticed them, in turn.

🥰 Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears (Michael Schulman, author; Charlie Thurstonn, narrator) - definitely interesting and an enjoyable read. What mainly struck me was that things now are pretty much same as it ever was: the producers have always been horrible to the talent; the academy, despite two serious efforts to course correct, has always been conservative/racist/misogynist, etc.

😍 In Name Only (BootsnBlossoms, Kryptaria) - 84K, 00Q - reread of this fandom classic/forever fave where Bond is 007 & Q is a participant in The Marketplace - love the way this explores Bond wrestling with concepts utterly unknown to him but also his own desires

Merlin Writer Month: Rare Gems

Below the cut I shall link fourteen underappreciated fics that I adore for week two of @madaboutmerlin‘s Merlin Writer Month.  Most are Merlin/Gwaine, but there are a couple gen/other pairings ones.  Gens will be listed first, other pairings second, and then the Merlin/Gwaine ones.  Each grouping shall go from fluffiest to angstiest because why not.

Summary: An invasion on Camelot leaves everyone in shambles. Unlikely alliances unfold in hopes of rebuilding what has been lost.

My Comments: A newer/recently completed fic that had me on the edge of my seat for nearly every update.  Definitely wish it could have been longer, but the pacing is excellent for the length that it is.  Has drama, intrigue, and a happy (although maybe a little bittersweet) ending.

Summary: "Gwaine's sixth problem, which may have been and always would be the greatest, was his complete and utter refusal—nay, inability—to accept help from others. It tied into his hubris, yes, a bit, and also his pride—for Gwaine had a great deal of pride, contrary to popular opinion—it was shame he didn't have, which was different."  Gwaine has had worse scrapes than this: he just can't think of any right now.  A boar hunt with the knights goes terribly wrong, but as things progress, it turns out that that's the least of his problems.  WARNINGS: Language, violence and sexual themes.

My Comments: With dreamwalking, whump, physical hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, and Gwaine being obsessed with apples, this fic has it all.  A great look into Gwaine and his past that I think deserves more attention.  [I will say however that there is referenced past CSA in this one.  It does not go into much detail, but it caught me by surprise and I would caution anyone who is sensitive to that before reading this one.]

My Comments: A nice long fic with great world building and a glimpse into what the Dragonlord culture might have been.  With wonderful art (and more on the way!) by WhimsyCatcher, you really can’t go wrong with this fic.  Centers around two very sweet relationships and honestly if you just want to immerse yourself into a new AU for a few hours, this is a great fic to go for.  I mean, it’s 103k and I read the whole thing in a day so if that doesn’t tell you it’s good, idk what will.

The Hobbit Enjoltaire AU

Like always I’m back on my bs and coming up with an AU instead of being productive.

So Grantaire is the Bilbo of this AU

He’s a Hobbit that is very much content in his life of indulgence, being critical, and just general hobbitness. He has absolutely no need nor wish to go on any adventures whatsoever

But then enter Gandalf Valjean who sees this perfectly content and complacent Hobbit and is like ‘ah yes, the perfect companion for an adventure’.

Grantaire refuses to go but Valjean still leaves a mark on his door.

That night, a group of dwarves arrive at his Hobbit hole in small groups, eager to introduce themselves

The looming Bahorel is the first to arrive, followed quickly by his brother, Feuilly

Then comes husbands Bossuet and Joly who, despite joining the quest, have left their wife behind in the Blue Mountains

Brothers Courfeyrac and Combeferre; the company’s banker and healer.

Twins Jehan and Marius; the youngest and more gentle members of the Company with Jehan following the career path of a scholar and Marius being...Marius.

Marius’s attempted courting of Valjean’s adopted daughter is what drew the wizard in to joining the company.

Cue Grantaire being very annoyed at the dwarves raiding his pantry and drinking all his wine.

Then comes the leader of their company; Enjolras, heir of Durin and rightful King Under The Mountain.

He’s also the brother of Courfeyrac and Combeferre (I wasn’t sure who would fit Kili and Fili so I guess Oin and Gloin are being combined with Frerin and Dis instead. )

Grantaire’s initial thoughts are that he’s underwhelming by dwarf standards and far too pretty and R’s far too gay

He finds out the purpose of their quest is to retake their home from the grips of a cruel dragon that has long since made it his home. He also finds out they want him to be their burgular and help to infiltrate Erebor.

It’s a noble cause but one Grantaire has no interest in. After all, what reason does he have to care about their quest?

Still, he somehow finds himself joining the company anyways.

The quest is an interesting one to say the least and absolutely bonkers with trolls, wargs, and eagles (oh my!)

The company is forced to stop in Rivendell much to the chargrin of the dwarves company. Valjean swears he has an old friend there who can help them read a map to the Lonely Mountain.

Thus we meet the elven lord Myriel and his daughter, Simplice.

Of course, they translate the ruins on the map and the Amis are given the deadline of ‘Durin’s Day’ (essentially dwarvish new year).

So they get a move on.

Along the way, they find themselves hunted by the orc Javert (I know it’s a loose fit but I didn’t know who to make him other than Azog ) who has a tense history with Valjean and a somewhat warrior past with Enjolras.

Finally, the Amis find themselves in Laketown and Erebor is within their grasp.

Unfortunately the lord and lady of Laketown are none other than Monsieur Thenardier and his wife. Both are greedy and are quick to agree to help in exchange for some of the Mountain’s treasure.

Disgusted by their greed but desperate for their help, Enjolras agrees.

However, before heading to the Mountain, the Amis insist Jehan and Marius stay behind in Laketown until the dragon is dealt with. They are seen as being ‘too young’ to take on the fire drake. Very reluctantly, they are left behind.

Of course things go mental once the remaining Amis make their way inside the mountain.

By this point, Valjean has briefly left them to deal with ‘personal business’ (aka a meeting of the White Council to set up the events of LOTR)

With great reluctance as the group have now grown close, Grantaire is sent in to make a first impression on the great dragon Louis Phillipe.

Before he goes in, Enjolras grabs his arm and they have this really intense stare between each other before he reluctantly lets R go.

Things go wrong. Grantaire is Grantaire and manages to anger the dragon thus leading him to an attack on Laketown.

Meanwhile, Marius has found himself developing a friendship with the Thenardiers’ daughter; Éponine - even if she sees their friendship as being far more than friendly.

However, when Louis attacks Laketown, she knows of her parents keeping an old artefact; a black arrow - also known as one of the only weapons that can kill a dragon.

So she manages to acquire it and uses it to attempt to kill the dragon, even if it is only in an attempt to impress Marius by ‘saving him’.

She succeeeds. However, she gets fatally wounded amongst the carnage caused by Louis before his demise.

Being praised by him as a hero, Éponine dies content in Marius’s arms. He presses a kiss to his forehead.

Meanwhile, Javert’s orc army has grown closer and began to infiltrate Laketown. In the process, Jehan Prouvaire is captured and held hostage.

Back in the Mountain, Enjolras has become infected by dragon sickness, slowly being driven mad by a lust for gold that has plagued his family for centuries. Thankfully, both Courfeyrac and Combeferre are effected to a far lesser extent.

Still, that doesn’t stop him offering a chainmail coat of mythril - an impenetrable metal - to Grantaire in what is absolutely a straight way. Nothing gay about giving your close campaign chainamil with an insane value - even after you’ve become afflicted by an obsession with wealth. It’s really gay.

Marius returns to the Mountain with a warning about Javert and need of Jehan’s capture.

Because all dwarves are stubborn, Enjolras refuses to go to the men or the elves for help. In his madness, he seems then as greedy and cruel; more enemies to be defeated than friends to be made.

Grantaire isn’t overwhelmed with the same madness. Not even slightly.

Stealing some of the gold, he slips out of Erebor in the dead of night to make deals where he can. It goes surprisingly well.

At least, it does until Enjolras finds out.

He sees Grantaire as a traitor who has stolen from him; another outsider there to rob him.

‘You are banished from here! Never to return! I thought you a friend! But it is clear you believe in nothing.’ ‘...I believed in you.’

In a fit of frustration and rage, Grantaire leaves the mithril shirt behind in Erebor as he leaves - much to the chagrin of his friends who are all appalled with Enjolras’s decision. They have lost one friend due to Jehan’s capture. They were not keen to lose another.

Finally Javert and his army of the national guard (national orcs??) show up.

In a word of warning and attempt at intimidation, Jehan is shown to be their prisoner before being executed. With one final cry of ‘Long live the future!’ that holds all the hopes and dreams they had at the quest’s beginning, Jehan Prouvaire is no more.

Seeing his friend die so brutally is more than enough to snap Enjolras out of his madness and essentially the Battle of the Five Armies happen.

However, Grantaire and Enjolras end up being the last two alive. In a final battle with Javert, both are mortally wounded. It is only upon Valjean’s return that Javert is truly defeated.

Injured and instead, Grantaire finds Enjolras resting on the ground besides a rock. He utters one single phrase before sitting besides the dwarven king; ‘Do you permit it?’

A sharp nod from him is all R needs. Both are content to die at each other’s side.

Using the little strength he has left, Enjolras presses a brief kiss to Grantaire’s lips before uttering his final words; ‘If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world’.

The two die holding hands.

After their deaths, Marius is left as the only surviving member of their company. As such, he is crowned King Under The Mountain with Cosette as his queen.

The Amis are buried with the highest honours in the mountain’s tombs.

Grantaire and Enjolras are laid to rest side by side; the hobbit and his dwarven king laid together always.

The king just.... sighs. It's not all bad ( and some were just silly ) but the whispers that were just hateful in nature seemed particularly misinformed. That fact never ceased to frustrate him, especially when it's thrown around so casually — as if it's true.

Did people not have anything better to do than lie about him and his family?

“… I certainly didn't tell him any such stories.” — though that doesn't mean that he's not heard stories about Tabbris and his behavior. He's probably witnessed it himself.

Droderick! What is the most silly, nonsensical law in your kingdom?

The king furrows his brows a little bit, head tilting a bit in confusion. His lips part and the beginnings of “We don't have laws like that." bubble up into his throat. However, his nephew is quick to pop up with a mischievous smile on his lips.

“Cast your gaze down in my presence, outsiders.” he recites, “For you are a child of man…. and I am the scion of a god.”

The king, in response, allows a guilty look to adorn his expression. He even gives Evan a little shake of his head, brows furrowing ever so slightly in disapproval — as if it was his nephew's fault for remember that decree. In response, Evan shrugs but the smile he wore is quick to fade in favor of a less provocative expression.

“…We haven't had any nonsensical laws.” Roderick begins slowly. “…but there have been a handful that I would consider “silly”, if only because how… needlessly unnecessary they were and how little they helped in the grand scheme of whatever I had planned for Exulan.”

“I've since repealed those laws so... they are a thing of the past” — and they would stay there if he had anything to say about it.

so like when i was visited by these thoughts like a vision from an angry god, i just started randomly jotting shit down and figure it out later ( i.e: now ). so here is the result of that :) this post is just for roderick so i will only be covering him. evan is a headache for another week.

first and foremost, i think there would be different types of reproductive organs for male dragons depending what form a dragon is in during their most formative years and the type of dragon they are. that said, it will also scale with size and practicality ( so, no, we are not having 7 inch dick if a being is six foot something in one of his forms )

This also plays into whatever "spicy" or jus plain weird additions their penes have in some capacity. like for example, a being that has dragon blood in them but not to the point of them having an actualized draconic form probably doesn't very pronounced ridges/ribs, doesn't retract into a sheath or covering, etc. on the opposite hand, the penes of full-blooded dragons ( Roderick and Evan ) have some of the above additions. most of it is just to ensure mating/breeding is successful in some way

Roderick, for example, spent a good chunk of his formative years as a dragon exclusively and only began staying in a more "humanoid" form after he'd already matured. the times he was 100% human were very rare and very uncomfortable for him so he just. didn't djgsfgfd —

Roderick has a smooth, tapered head ( narrower at the tip and widens out some towards the end ), which gives way to a scale-like on his shaft. this scale texture is only somewhat pronounced, if only because the lines of ridged nubs along it are. there are four in a "box-like" placement — two along the topside and two along the underside — that follow the curve of the shaft nearly all the way to the base. they seem to go "off-course" towards the very end and twist somewhat. Why this is, no one knows.

because all of this would be a pain in the ass to fit underneath clothing, roderick's retracts into a sheath the genital area that is usually obscured by scales. these scales are more pliable than the ones that cover other parts of his body, allowing them shift or bend somewhat when roderick is aroused

additional note: this is not why Roderick wears loose clothing and to preempt everyone that might think that, roderick just hates clothes in general. loose clothing is just something he hates a little less and the fact that they can hide a boner if he has one is just a nice benefit.
