canon starter call - open to anyone !
i have a strong urge to write some canon muses, so if you would be interested in writing against any of the canon muses listed under the READ MORE below, please comment/IM me and i can send a starter your way or reply to one of your starters.
i do not require you to know anything about my muse's canon, but i'm more than happy to tell you about it if you ask. i'd be happy to write canon muses against your ocs! also, mixing fandoms is 100% ok with me unless your canon muse is problematic and makes me uncomfy. my canon muses do not have all their memories or relationships from their life unless we plot it, but they will have the same general personality/ambitions.
if you are willing to write against my canon muses but don't care which, just like this post, and i'll take a look at your open starters and/or send you a closed starter at random with a muse i think fits the vibe.
*please don't agree to write against my canon muses if you're one of those picky weirdos that will be up in arms if i don't write a cannon muse exactly how you would.
( if you'd prefer to write against an oc muse only, check this post. )

“Yo, this is appointment viewing”A UFC 218 preview
Joey
November 28th
Not since LAST November-December have we had two genuinely stacked PPV events back to back. UFC 217 brought the sizzle with three title fights, former champions and title contenders competing for standing and a loaded prelim slate with HWs and BWs looking to find their place in the world. UFC 218 heads to Detroit with just one title fight but with it a host of potential #1 contender clashes alongside a flat out good undercard with relevant fights and action fights all across the ledger. The headliner is a short notice clash between Max Holloway and Jose Aldo, a pretty damn good 145 lb title fight that could either solidify Max Holloway as a P4P great or reannounce Jose Aldo's return to the top of the division. Under it, all four main cards are REALLY on point with potential #1 contender clashes at HW, LW, Flyweight and SW. I can't begin to express my excitement for this bad boy much longer so let's just get right to it!
Fights: 13
Debuts: 1 (Allan Crowder)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 2 (Frankie Edgar OUT, Jose Aldo IN vs Max Holloway/Al Iaquinta OUT, Charles Oliveira IN vs Paul Felder)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 13 (Jose Aldo, Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Alistair Overeem, Henry Cejudo, Sergio Pettis, Francis Ngannou, Michelle Waterson, Tecia Torres, Charles Oliveira, Alex Olivieira, David Teymur)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC: 1 (Angela Magana)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 11 (Sergio Pettis, Felice Herrig, David Teymur, Drakkar Klose, Alex Olivieira, Yancy Medeiros, Paul Felder, Tecia Torres, Max Holloway, Francis Ngannou, Alistair Overeem)
Stat Monitor for 2017:
Debuting Fighters (Current number: 41-35)- Allan Crowder
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 23-34-1)- Jose Aldo, Charles Olivieira
Second Fight (Current number: 27-37)- Justin Willis, Dominick Reyes, Sabah Homasi
Cage Corrosion (18-13-1)- 0
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- We should begin with the main event which in my estimation an improvement over the Edgar/Holloway booking. To explain, while Edgar/Holloway is a fresh fight and one that would've been truly awesome, we've seen Frankie lose to Aldo twice. Aldo is the superior fighter of that we have no doubt---and so seeing Holloway/Aldo II isn't as fresh but it is a better all around fight. The first fight in my estimation is one of those clear examples of "sometimes stats lie, man." Everybody, almost like a chorus of geese on a cold Winnipeg morning, honks about Aldo winning the first two rounds and that's true but also irrelevant. Why? Because if you WATCH the fight, you can tell that the second round was a round where stats lie. Halloway had no respect for Aldo's power, he marched him down, he took to give (in my opinion he won the round) and by the end of the second round, their respective reactions heading back to their corners should've told you who was winning or about to win that fight. It wasn't Aldo.
2- I also don't buy the idea that leg kicks are some vaunted weapon which has been missing from Aldo's game and will be some deciding factor. For starters, it's not Holloway hasn't faced explosive kickers in the past. Second, it's not Aldo's leg kicks are the key weapon to what was his dominant run to begin with. They're a tool in the act but no more a tool than his amazing takedown defense and superb angles. LASTLY this is a guy who has been rocked/dropped in 3 of his last 4 fights. He's been finished in 2 of them. The only guy who hasn't finished him is a guy who has one KO stoppage in the last six years (love ya Frankie!). Aldo has plenty of ways to beat Holloway and Holloway has plenty of ways to beat him in return---but leg kicks? Not really seeing it. Aldo hasn't been this big leg kick monster since about 2013 or so. They're a sparsely used gimmick at this point.
3- I wonder if the UFC is as frustrated at the 155 lb scene as we are as fans. We have:
-A champion who doesn't seem like he's defending any time soon.
-An interim champion who seems to be torn between waiting for the neverending stop of the McGregor/UFC table dance and taking a fight that risks him losing the biggest payday of his life.
-Two fantastic 155 lb fights that could determine #1 contenders for titles that don't seem to be getting defended any time soon.
-Dustin Poirier sitting on the outside looking in after dominating Anthony Pettis plus depending on who you ask finishing/almost finishing Eddie Alvarez.
Making matters worser than the worst worse, you have Nate Diaz potentially malingering around, the looming threat of Max Holloway or Jose Aldo finally making a move up as well as a solid crop of 155 lb talent who aren't close to title shot contention but would in theory be closing the gap if the division wasn't held up at the top so much (the aforementioned Paul Felder, a suddenly resurgent Clay Guida, Anthony Pettis is still young enough to turn things around, too too early to write off Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee after tough losses, Devid Teymur and the mystery that is Mairbek Taisumov). At some point something has to give along these battle lines and I wonder if that means biting the bullet, admitting that there's a need for it and opening up 165 lbs.
3- I do think, title contention wise, it says something that Alvarez/Gaethje is 4th on the card underneath Pettis/Cejudo when it comes to relevancy. Could be nothing, could mean everything.
4- There's a lot of hype and pressure on Francis Ngannou. That's probably well deserved but as I've said perhaps one time too many, don't get caught up in the narrative if he loses. Once upon a time, Stipe Miocic got his first real big step up and he was iced in two rounds by Stefan Struve. Shawn Jordan once put Derrick Lewis on ice skates with a fat guy wheel kick. This will shock and amaze you but fighters do improve over time and at HW, nobody is ever truly a lost cause. Division lives for chaos.
5- I know I'm the weirdo in this regard but I'm really excited to see how Sergio Pettis handles the challenge that is Henry Cejudo. Of all the Duke Roufus products, Sergio is the one who seems to most fit the mold of what they want. Functional in every facet of the fight while still having the flash, sizzle and workrate to keep people interested. Cejudo's rediscovered his power recently and his boxing has looked world's better. I have cardio concerns with him as you always need to but Sergio Pettis has always had an aversion to guys who pack a shot on the feet. This fight could be really great.
6- Paul Felder's stock, which continues to go up and down depending on the time of year, is probably as high as it's been since he iced Danny Castillo way back in 2014. Felder has always been really talented but at 33, the clock's ticking on him really making a run. He's won 4 of his last 5 fights but the only guy who remains int he organization out of that group is Stevie Ray. His losses are two totally acceptable ones (a decision to Barboza where he could've probably won, a 3rd round TKO stoppage vs Francisco Trinaldo in Brazil) and one totally bemusing loss to Ross Pearson where he spun for the entire fight chasing a bonus and never got it. Felder's inconsistency is partially the reason why it's hard to feel overly confident in him vs Charles Olivieira. Do Bronx is always dangerous for a quickie sub and he showed that vs Will Brooks when he got his back and subbed him in the first round in April. Historically Charles has won to the guys he's supposed to beat and found creative insightful ways to lose to the guys he shouldn't. He's always in a fight until it's over and Felder historically leaves enough margin for error where he could, in theory, give Do Bronx opportunities.
7- David Teymur thus far has passed every test put in front of him. He was successful in TKO-ing guys who he probably would've been fighting on the regional scene and then really broke out when he spoiled the Lando Vannata hype with a decision win in March. Teymur is one of those guys who mixes techniques well, never tries the same trick twice and has improved time and time again whenever he fights. He's a bit old for a prospect (28) and Drakkar Klose will probably be the bigger, stronger fighter but I'm excited to see what Teymur has added to his game during his time away. Dude has top 15 potential in my estimation.
8- There's going to be a lot of interest in the Waterson/Torres fight and fair play to it but I'm all about that Felice Herrig/Courtney Casey bout. I haven't been wow'd in Felice's more recent fights (never really impressed with Kish, thought Grasso won) BUT even having said that, she's finally matching her record with her boisterous personality. On the other hand, I'm all about that Courtney Casey violence. She debuted vs Joanne Calderwood on short notice and put it on her before she gassed. The same for her vs Seo Hee Ham where she started off hot and then the wheels fell off. She rebounded by finishing Christina Stanciu and has a "way more impressive in hindsight" sub of Randa Markos. A loss to Claudia Gadelha followed where she never seemed to get out of second gear and you could almost sense her upside would be "tough woman who lives on the outskirts of the top 10." She then went and beat the fuck out of Jessica Aguilar in a fight that wasn't competitive for a single minute of its duration. She is all action, all the time and Felice Herrig's size, grappling and developing hands are going to give her a real test. This fight is great.
9- Yancy Medeiros vs Alex "Cowboy" Olivieira is gonna be your favorite 90s gore action movie where it's all violence with no sense behind it. Just action figures ramming into one another.
10- Does the Ngannou/Overeem winner gets the "The UFC would like you to face Stipe Miocic on -insert date here-" sprung up on them?
11- So Dominick Reyes is arguably the most exciting prospect at 205 lbs in a long long time---but I can't help but feel like Jeremy Kimball is going to be a step too far for him in his development. I kind of think the UFC thinks so too since it's buried on the FP prelims where a loss can almost be hidden.
12- Would a loss to Tecia Torres expose Michelle Waterson as being a PVZ-esque hype job?
Must Wins
1- Michelle Waterson
Might as well just flow from A to B, right? Waterson came into the UFC off a loss after the organization had been hounding Invicta to free her up for a while. She went 2-0 and WME-IMG actually signed her and took over as her media reps. The response off of that was a loss to Rose Namajunas where she was outmatched from the get go. Waterson says she went out for a while to get stronger and balance her aggression in the cage (she felt Rose just swarmed her from the jump and she was too timid on the feet) so hopefully we're going to see a new and improved Waterson. She is still super markketable, talented and has exciting fights more often than not. A loss to Tecia Torres would be really tough on her career and would put a lot of things into question, primarily whether she's big enough for 115 lbs or whether this entire thing is really a new PVZ.
2- Eddie Alvarez
Alvarez exorcised a lot of demons when he beat RDA for the title and ended the bullshit about him just being a good fighter outside of the UFC who couldn't hang (loss to Cerrone and two ugly split decision wins weren't helping). He never had a chance vs McGregor where he was basically knocked out by the first left hand that landed. The last fight vs Dustin Poirier was, I suppose, the return of the Eddie Alvarez of old. He got hurt, survived, found whatever it is that makes him insane and then used it in the second round. A blatantly illegal knee ended the night for Poirier and Alvarez but for a BRIEF second, Eddie Alvarez was the man he was in all those wars. He's had a lot of wear and tear on his body from fighting great competition for little fanfare. The UFC version of Eddie Alvarez is a little smarter, a lot more chinny and the epitome of age kicking in too late to protect the body. Alvarez vs Gaethje really does feel like a battle between Eddie Alvarez retro and Eddie Alvarez off the shelf. Justin Gaethje has a ton of Alvarez in his game while being younger and hitting way harder---but does Eddie still have some magic left?
3- Dominick Reyes
205 lbs needs Dominick Reyes in the worst way. The under 30 LHW prospect got into the UFC on short notice after a viral headkick KO and he did little to disappointed in stomping out Joachim Christenson. Still I think we can admit that Christensen is ways away from being UFC quality and so Reyes still hasn't beaten someone of note. Jeremy Kimball isn't great shakes BUT he has a very deceptive record. He started his career 5-3 and since then he's gone 10-3 which includes a 1-1 stint at Bellator and wins over dudes with far more fanfare than he (TUF finalist Matt Van Buren, Cody Mumma and Chidi Njokuani all ring a bell). This is a sneaky test of Reyes' ability and I'm hoping he'll pass it.
Can't Miss Fights
1- Justin Gaethje vs Eddie Alvarez
2- Jose Aldo vs Max Holloway
3- Francis Ngannou vs Alistair Overeem
4-Henry Cejudo vs Sergio Pettis
5- Alex Oliveira vs Yancy Medeiros

Riverside Football Poll, Week 5
We're into league play for much of the CIF-Southern Section, so, I bring you the first edition of Riverside High School Football Poll. From now, through the end of the regular season, we'll rank the teams in the City of Riverside, and hope to make some sense out of what we're watching on Friday Nights. (Hopefully, you're following along via Riverside TV, and it's digital platforms.)
Our poll is different from the CIF Polls, in the sense that we're metric-based. I know that can be kind of a scary word in sports, but it's fairly simple. There are three factors to our Ranking Index.
Won-Loss Record - Will be the primary factor in these rankings. I mean, that's why they play the games, right?
Strength of Schedule – Wins against good teams are weighted ahead of wins against lesser teams. Wins against teams in higher divisions, also weighted.
Road Wins – To win on the road is tough, so road wins are also weighted.
So, without further adieu, here is the Riverside High School Football Poll, thru games played on September 21st.
#1 - NORTE VISTA (4-1) RIVER VALLEY DIVISION 9
LAST WEEK: 56-0 win over Norwalk, where young Eddie Allain had 200 yards and 3TD, while Miron Hazem scored thrice, on a rush, reception, as well as on a defensive scoop and score. They rolled up 339 yards on the ground, two runs of over seventy-five yards by Allain helped, but called off the dogs in 2nd half, with a 42-0 lead, and a running clock.
Defense pitched their first shutout in two years, under new defensive coordinator, Andy Martinez. In No Vi's four wins, they've allowed an average of 13.75 points, and they forced six turnovers against Norwalk, in a dominating performance.
THIS WEEK: River Valley opener against Hillcrest (2-3/D10), that knocked them off, 49-41, in the 2017 regular season finale, denying them their fifth outright league title in six years.
OUTLOOK: With their fourth win against Norwalk, No Vi has already surpassed their win total for 2017. They were able to go 2-1 in three games without All-World RB Chris Melesio, who'll return for league play, and are deeper for it. Non-league slate also allowed the Braves to develop some chemistry on the young offensive line. Also, don't be surprised if QB Julian Corey makes a play or two down the stretch. But the Braves' fortunes will likely come down to how their defense holds up in league play. They were cruising along at 3-0 last season, until Ramona upended them, and Hillcrest shocked them with a startling comeback in the season finale. The Braves haven't forgotten, and thus, are a good bet to regain the RVL Crown.
#2 - NOTRE DAME (4-1) SUNBELT DIVISION 7
LAST GAME: Had a Bye for Week 5, but suffered first loss of the season at Aquinas in Week 4, 31-17, their second straight loss in the “Battle for the Shield.” Senior QB Rodney Koenig did throw for over 200 yards, and Carnegie HS transfer RB Tyler Mosley took a screen pass 65 yards to the house.
THIS WEEK: On the road at Paloma Valley (3-2) in their first game under the new Raincross Conference configuration.
OUTLOOK: The Titans look to be in the drivers' seat for the new Sunbelt League Title, but a lot can happen over the next five weeks. Playing up to Paloma (D3) and Valley View (D6) over their next two, should prove helpful in future evaluations. Clearly, the Titans have been impressive under 1st Year Head Coach Aaron Huerta, and are anxious to get back to work, and on the winning track in Week 6.
#3 - LA SIERRA (4-1) RIVER VALLEY DIVISION 12
LAST WEEK: Won their third in a row, against Perris 21-14. QB Bryce Poppe has completed nearly 60% of his passes over the last three weeks to the tune of 563 yards and 5 TD. The defense was spearheaded by Nathan Torres and Luke Noel, in holding Perris to 14 points. In their four wins, the Eagles have only surrendered 17.5 points per game.
THIS WEEK: Eagles open River Valley League play, on the road at Jurupa Valley, this week's Riverside TV Game. The Jaguars last win came on September 15th of 2017, and they haven't won a league game since 2014.
OUTLOOK: There are two schools of thought about the Eagles. There's the “but they haven't played anyone” voice, and the conventional wisdom of “good teams beat who they're supposed to.” You know Head Coach Gary Hedlund will make his players aware of all the naysayers. In the Eagles' favor: Senior WR Andre Thomas is one of the most dynamic players in the league; they've won three of their four games on the road; they've also learned how to play from behind, rallying for two fourth quarter wins. Even with that, their playoff hopes likely come down to the October 12th Riverside TV match-up vs Ramona.
#4 - RAMONA (4-1) RIVER VALLEY DIVISION 12
LAST WEEK: Didn't play, but went into the Bye Week, with wins over two intra-city rivals, in Arlington and Poly. The win over Arlington was their first against the Lions, since 2003. The Rams averaged 45 points over their previous three games, all wins. Junior RB Donte Roby, Jr. has emerged as a workhorse for Ramona, complementing the play of Senior QB Brandon Osayande. Rams are currently 7th in the Division 12 CIF-SS Poll.
THIS WEEK: The Rams will open league play against Patriot, on the road, in a match-up of 4-1 teams. The Warriors are only allowing 15.8ppg, the bulk of this coming in 31-7 loss in Week 2 against Chaffey HS. The Rams knocked off Patriot last season, 19-14, behind Isaiah Baker's 256 yards and 3 TD.
OUTLOOK: The Rams have the lowest Strength of Schedule of all the 4-1 teams, but no one can doubt how hard the Rams have played under second-year coach Ken Mushinskie. They have an experienced QB, Osayande, who seems to be clicking with some of his weapons on offense, and a defense, that is a bit undersized, but compensates with speed and tenacity. The Rams are fundamentally sound, and should have a say in the River Valley League race.
#5 - POLY (2-3) INLAND VALLEY DIVISION 9
LAST WEEK: Lost against Citrus Hill, 49-7. The Hawks led 43-0 at the half, and had 303 rushing yards, among ten different rushers. It was the second loss in a row for The Bears, after their OT Thriller win over King in Week 3.
THIS WEEK: Open Inland Valley slate against Canyon Springs. The Cougars are 0-5 coming in, and Poly pasted them 54-37, in last season's season finale.
OUTLOOK: The Bears have missed the playoffs in each of Derrick DeWitt's first two years, and could use a fast start in league play. They'll need the defense to step up, and use Jermaine Henderson as their main weapon on offense, to make their first trip to CIF Playoffs since 2015. The Bears' opponents to date have winning percentage of .720. The five remaining teams on Poly's schedule are a combined 7-17 (.292).
#6 - HILLCREST (2-3) RIVER VALLEY DIVISION 10
LAST WEEK: Didn't play in Week 5, but went into the Bye Week with a 20-15 win over Temescal Canyon. Sophomore QB Camren Payne threw for 161 yards and 2 TD, both to Isaac Perez, who had 5 catches for 69 yards. Ryan Howard was on the receiving end of seven Payne passes, to the tune of 63 yards. The Trojans won the game, despite giving up 369 yards to the Titans, while gaining just 238 themselves. They were able to hold off Temescal Canyon, by forcing four turnovers.
THIS WEEK: River Valley opener against Norte Vista. In last year's regular season finale, the Trojans stunned the Braves, rallying from 28-10 down in the 3rd Quarter, to roll to a 49-41 victory, while piling up over 500 yards of offense. Hillcrest played up to Division 7 and Division 8 teams in non-league, which should ready them for the Braves, who'll put their defense to the test.
OUTLOOK: As young as they are at the skill spots, the Trojans could be the most talented team in the league, on both sides of the football. They are certainly capable of winning it. In fact, they were, ranked #1 in Division 10, until their Week 1 loss to Notre Dame. If they're both determined and focused, there's no reason they can't contend for the league's top spot. Their playoff hopes, likely rides on their defense, which features five Seniors, and six multi- year starters.
#7 - JOHN W NORTH (1-4) INLAND VALLEY DIVISION 8
LAST WEEK: Huskies had a Bye Week, but are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, where they've surrendered forty-plus points, three weeks in a row to Temescal Canyon, Hemet, and Paloma Valley. In a 47-32 loss to Paloma Valley in Week 4, Senior QB Nick Satcher directed the offense to 500 yards.
THIS WEEK: North opens Inland Valley slate on the road at Perris. The Panthers are coming off of a loss to LaSierra. The new Inland Valley configuration will feature three new league opponents for the Huskies: Perris, Lakeside and Orange Vista.
OUTLOOK: Thus far, in Year One of the Dennis Brown regime, the Huskies have figured out how to score points, but have had trouble stopping the opposition. Despite their disappointing non-league record, Coach Brown has found some elements to his team that could lead them to contend. The key will come in Mike Kelly's defensive adjustments from non-league to league. Can the defense improve enough to hang three to four league wins? Could come down to North-Poly rivalry game in Week 10.
#8 - ARLINGTON (0-5) SUNBELT DIVISION 8
LAST WEEK: Did not play. Last game was Week 4 loss against Tahquitz, 40-26.
THIS WEEK: Valley View, in a Raincross Conference crossover game. The Eagles, at 1-4, are also desperate for a win. When the teams met last season, Valley View knocked off Arlington 42-26.
OUTLOOK: Rich Lunsford left on a high, with last year's 8-2 record, taking the job at Redlands East Valley, but the cupboard was hardly bare at Arlington. The good news for new head coach Jeff Roney is that he'll get Junior RB Ezekial Valentine for the second half of the season, which could inject some life into the running game. In turn, that should make Isaiah Leuta's job a little bit easier, and allow him to integrate Senior WR Michael Hollis into the offense, along with Junior playmaker WR Devin Johnson. On defense, the Lions' D-Line is formidable, and capable of helping Arlington get on a run. The Lions also played a tough non- league schedule, as their opponents’ combined winning percentage was .692. The Lions will look to wipe away their September disappointment, in their three Sunbelt League games.
#9 - ML KING (0-5) BIG VIII DIVISION 4
LAST WEEK: The Wolves had a Bye Week in Week 5, but were coming off of back-to-back heartbreaking losses, in overtime vs. Poly on September 8th, and a one-point, fourth quarter loss against Elsinore in Week 4.
THIS WEEK: The Wolves open Big VIII play against Norco, whom they nearly beat on the road, the last time they visited in 2016. Last season, the Cougars won, 49-0, for their tenth straight win over ML King.
OUTLOOK: The Big VIII is simply a gauntlet with Norco, Santiago, and Roosevelt all playing well, and Centennial looking nearly untouchable. King has made the decision to go young in a lot of spots, and taken their lumps in non-league. But Pat McCarthy teams always play hard, and perhaps they can steal a game or two in league play. The Wolves' remaining opponents have a .640 winning percentage.

MINNEAPOLIS | Odorizzi takes no-hit bid into 8th as Twins top Yankees 3-1
New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/minneapolis-odorizzi-takes-no-hit-bid-into-8th-as-twins-top-yankees-3-1/169686/
MINNEAPOLIS | Odorizzi takes no-hit bid into 8th as Twins top Yankees 3-1
MINNEAPOLIS — As he inched closer to a no-hitter, Jake Odorizzi was ready to throw 140 pitches if needed. He was nearing his career high against the New York Yankees, but was confident he could talk Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor into leaving him in for the ninth inning if it got to that point.
Odorizzi never made it that far.
His no-hit bid was broken up when Greg Bird laced a run-scoring double with one out in the eighth, and the Twins beat the Yankees 3-1 Wednesday night to take two of three from New York.
The Yankees’ lead over Oakland for the top AL wild card was cut to one game as they completed a 4-5 trip.
A tiring Odorizzi walked Luke Voit before Bird lined the next pitch deep into the left-center gap. Odorizzi was immediately pulled and he tipped his cap to the crowd as he walked off to a standing ovation.
“It’s been a tough year. There’s no if ands or buts about it,” Odorizzi said. “So it’s good to have one of these outings toward the end, feel the energy, show them kind of what I’m capable of doing.”
Odorizzi (6-10) struck out five and walked three, matching his big league high of 120 pitches set while pitching for Tampa Bay against the Twins on June 3, 2016.
There was no hesitation on Molitor’s part as he went to take out his starter after Odorizzi finally allowed a hit in the eighth. Odorizzi needed just seven pitches to get through the seventh, but that brought his pitch count to 109 entering the eighth.
“It was a good kind of stress for me, trying to negotiate with Jake in between innings,” Molitor said. “No one wants to see anyone get hurt, but he’s a veteran. He said he felt great, and I know he would be smart about trying to find ways to take it a pitch at a time, a hitter at a time.”
Taylor Rogers relieved Odorizzi and promptly struck out Gleyber Torres before Trevor Hildenberger fanned Andrew McCutchen. Hildenberger finished for his sixth save.
Luis Severino (17-8) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings, dropping to 3-6 in his last 11 starts. Severino unsuccessfully tried to persuade manager Aaron Boone to keep him in the game in the sixth.
“He wanted to stay in the game. I’m fine with my guys wanting to stay in the game,” Boone said. “He was very pitch efficient.
Obviously it wasn’t a pitch count issue, it was just starting to get a little away and he’s in the fight right now. I respect the hell out of that.”
Severino permitted one hit in the first five innings, then gave up a one-out single to Max Kepler in the sixth followed by Ehire Adrianza’s go-ahead double.
Joe Mauer’s single put runners at the corners, Jorge Polanco struck out on a wild pitch that advanced Mauer, and David Robertson relieved and retired Eddie Rosario on a groundout.
“My confidence is always up,” said Severino, tagged with the loss in consecutive starts. “I’ve had some struggles but that’s nothing I can’t fix. So I was going to go give 110 percent and compete for my team.” Minnesota opened a 3-0 lead in the seventh when Willians Astudillo hit an RBI single and scored on Kepler’s double.
Twins catcher Mitch Garver was removed after two innings. He took a foul tip to the mask in the second, and the team said initial tests did not indicate a concussion.
TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman could return next week from nearly a month on the disabled list. Chapman has not pitched since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis, which has bothered him throughout the season. The 30-year-old left-hander threw a bullpen Wednesday and was to return to New York for treatment.
Boone anticipates another bullpen session this weekend, then a return.
Twins: 3B Miguel Sano (left leg) said he hopes to play again before the end of the season. “I want to finish strong,” he said. Sano was hurt last week when he slid awkwardly into second base against Houston.
UP NEXT Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka is to start Friday against Toronto. Tanaka has won consecutive starts in September after going winless in August.
Twins: LHP Stephen Gonsalves will make his fifth big league start Thursday at Kansas City.

Major League Baseball roundup: Smoak lifts Jays over Tigers
Justin Smoak led off the bottom of the ninth inning with his 11th homer of the season to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 4-3 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won the first two games of the four-game series to extend the Tigers’ losing streak to 11 games.
Nicholas Castellanos hit a two-run homer for the Tigers and John Hicks had a solo shot.
Smoak’s second career walk-off homer came against Detroit reliever Joe Jimenez (3-1). Seunghwan Oh (4-2) pitched around a single in the top of the ninth to earn the win.
Reds 12, Brewers 3
Reliever Michael Lorenzen, used as a pinch hitter, swatted a grand slam to cap an eight-run seventh inning as host Cincinnati rallied to beat Milwaukee.
Lorenzen’s third home run of the season came against Jacob Barnes, the Brewers’ fourth pitcher of the day, and made a winner of Reds reliever Daniel Hernandez (3-0), who worked a scoreless seventh inning before Cincinnati’s offensive uprising.
Cincinnati starter Tyler Mahle went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out 12.
Red Sox 11, Yankees 0
Chris Sale fanned 11, allowed one hit in seven dominant innings and combined with two relievers on a two-hitter as Boston rolled at New York.
Rafael Devers set a career high with five hits and drove in four runs. He hit a grand slam in the first off Sonny Gray on a 1-2 curveball before adding three singles and a seventh-inning double.
Sale (8-4) allowed only a Giancarlo Stanton single with two outs in the first and two other baserunners. He reached 100 mph on his final strikeout of the game against rookie Gleyber Torres in the seventh.
A’s 7, Indians 2
Edwin Jackson recorded his 99th career win and continued his impressive run against Cleveland, pitching host Oakland to a sixth straight win.
Josh Phegley, Dustin Fowler and Matt Olson hit home runs, helping the A’s overcome a 2-0 deficit to record a second straight win in the three-game series.
Jackson (1-0) picked up his first win with his new team with 6 2/3 innings of two-hit, two-run pitching. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. The 34-year-old right-hander improved his career record against the Indians to 10-1,
Cubs 14, Twins 9
Jason Heyward had four hits and drove in two runs, and Albert Almora Jr. went 3-for-3 with two RBIs before departing with muscle cramps to lead Chicago past visiting Minnesota for a third straight victory.
It was the third four-hit game of the season for Heyward, all coming in June. Ben Zobrist added two hits and three RBIs and David Bote scored three runs for Chicago. The Cubs finished with 20 hits, 17 of which were singles to go along with three doubles.

Joe Mauer drove in three runs for the Twins, who got a home run from Eddie Rosario.
Angels 6, Orioles 2
Albert Pujols and David Fletcher came up with key hits as Los Angeles scored five runs in the eighth inning to win at Baltimore.
The Orioles held a 2-1 lead before Pujols tied it off Mychal Givens (0-6) with a double to right-center. Two batters later, pinch hitter Chris Young reached on a fielder’s choice against lefty Tanner Scott that drove in the go-ahead run. Scott later hit Martin Maldonado with a pitch, forcing in a run, and Fletcher followed with a two-run double.
Justin Anderson (2-2) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, handing the Orioles a seventh straight loss.
Rays 5, Astros 2
Wilson Ramos recorded four RBIs in his first two at-bats, and Tampa Bay rode an ambush of Justin Verlander to a win over Houston in St. Petersburg, Fla.
One start after allowing season highs in hits and runs, Verlander (9-4) eclipsed those totals in a second consecutive subpar outing. Verlander worked five innings, a season-low total, and surrendered five runs on nine hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.
Ramos doubled with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning, and he singled with the bases loaded and two outs in the second. Each time, he knocked in Kevin Kiermaier and Matt Duffy.
Marlins 5, Mets 2
JT Riddle’s tiebreaking RBI infield single capped a three-run sixth inning as Miami rallied for a win over visiting New York.
The Marlins have won the first two games of the three-game series to move percentage points ahead of the Mets for fourth place in the National League East. Miami had been in last place in the NL East every day since April 5.
The Mets, who opened the season 11-1, have lost three straight and finished 5-21 in June. They have the worst winning percentage in the NL.
Phillies 3, Nationals 2
Jorge Alfaro and Aaron Altherr delivered RBI doubles on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning for host Philadelphia, which survived the early loss of starting pitcher Vince Velasquez to edge Washington.
The Phillies have won three of their last four. The Nationals have lost four of their last five and six of their last eight.
In the second inning, Velasquez was hit on the right (pitching) arm by a comebacker off the bat of Adam Eaton. Remarkably, Velasquez raced over, picked up the ball with his left hand and threw out the speedy Eaton to end the inning and keep a runner from scoring from third. Velasquez exited the game due to a right arm contusion.
Rockies 3, Dodgers 1
Ian Desmond hit a home run and German Marquez gave up just two hits over eight innings as Colorado won at Los Angeles.
Marquez was the second consecutive Rockies starting pitcher to go eight innings against a Dodgers offense that set a franchise record with 55 home runs in June. Rockies left-hander Tyler Anderson lasted eight innings in Friday night’s victory.
Slideshow (13 Images)
Marquez (6-8) yielded one run while striking out nine. He didn’t issue a walk. Adam Ottavino tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.
Braves 11, Cardinals 4
A grand slam by Nick Markakis highlighted a six-run, fifth-inning rally, and Atlanta coasted to a win at St. Louis.
Markakis went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in five runs, the most important being his fourth career slam that came off St. Louis starter Luke Weaver (4-7). It was his ninth homer and first since June 5. The right fielder also doubled and added a sacrifice fly in the sixth as the Braves beat the Cardinals for the second straight day.
Max Fried (1-2) was the beneficiary of Atlanta’s 15-hit attack, pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing four hits and three walks.
Rangers 13, White Sox 4
Joey Gallo and Ryan Rua homered, and Bartolo Colon picked up his 245th career win as host Texas knocked off Chicago.
Colon surrendered three runs on seven hits in a five-inning start. He struck out two and walked two for the Rangers, who have won three in a row and 11 of their past 13.
Texas pulled away with a seven-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Jurickson Profar and a two-run triple from Elvis Andrus. The Rangers, who also had a seven-run inning in their Friday win over the White Sox, have outscored Chicago 24-7 in the first two games of the series.
Mariners 6, Royals 4
Felix Hernandez allowed three runs in the first inning before blanking visiting Kansas City for the next four innings as Seattle won its season-high sixth game in a row.
Hernandez (8-6) allowed three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Ryon Healy went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Mariners, and Mitch Haniger added three hits.
Padres 4, Pirates 3
Wil Myers hit a solo homer and a two-run double, and Joey Lucchesi allowed one hit over five scoreless innings as San Diego defeated visiting Pittsburgh.
Lucchesi (4-3) picked up his first win since April 28. He was making his third start since missing 33 games with a glut strain. Working on a 90-pitch limit, the rookie allowed only a fourth-inning, leadoff single by David Freese and four walks with five strikeouts.
Brad Hand picked up his 23rd save by stranding the tying run at third with no outs after giving up two runs on three consecutive extra-base hits to open the ninth.
Giants 7, Diamondbacks 0
Brandon Crawford, Andrew McCutchen and Joe Panik homered, and San Francisco rookie Dereck Rodriguez pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings during a win over Arizona in Phoenix.
McCutchen and Buster Posey had three hits apiece, and Crawford, Pablo Sandoval and Panik had two RBIs apiece, helping the Giants win for the sixth time in seven games and the ninth time in 11.
Rodriguez (3-1) gave up six hits, struck out five and walked two in winning his second straight decision. The Giants posted their 10th shutout of the season, their second in four games.
