She never wanted him to witness this state between sleep and awakening, the moments when she still doesnβt trust her own sanity. But itβs too late now and the smile Marya tries to put on to reassure them both fails miserably.Β βDonβt worry Iβm fineβ, she manages to say eventually.Β βSometimes ... itβs still hard for me to distinguish dream from reality.β To convince herself that this is indeed her life and not her imagination protecting her from the horrible truth of being trapped in the asylum.
