What is it?” she raised the cigarette to her lips again. “Am I not trim enough? Are my thighs too big? I'm not 17 anymore, I gave you 2 kids and still -”

“Still what? You regret Kate? Or is it Michael you regret?” He spat. She smiled around the cigarette bitterly.

“The only thing I regret is you. Get out.” She pointed at the door. Stanley scoffed, staying rooted to the spot.

“I mean it Stanley, get out of here or so help me God -” She turned away stubbing the cigarette out in the ashtray before her most insane thoughts recognised its potential as a weapon.

“Or what? You'll run to your Mommy?” He yelled, following it up with a belly laugh. Dorothy balled her fists up at her sides, what she wouldn't give to knock him out, go find the melon baller Ma was so fond of. It wasn't fair - men could be as vulgar as they wanted, spit cruelties left, right and center and women were just supposed to take it? To be as soft and secure as this stupid lingerie she'd bought to try and breathe some air into their sex life. They were barely even 30 and he hated looking at her. She would never be enough. Not pretty enough, not sexy enough, not feminine enough and even more alarming she'd never be strong enough to leave and be on her own.
