He’s known it was coming for a while now; both Adrianna and Arthur have already gone through it, and Alexandria and Abigail are younger than him, meaning they still have some time. So when he’s called to his father’s office (something entirely uncommon in and of itself), he’s not actually all that surprised to learn that he’s being married off. Betrothed to a man, an alpha, he’s never met and only knows by reputation alone. A reputation that doesn’t entirely endear him to said man.

Honestly, the most surprising part about the whole situation is the fact that it’s a man his parents are giving him to. Though, considering the number of children Bruce Wayne already has, and the fact that Archie himself is only third in line of the Howells successors, he supposes his parents can maybe afford to be a little more progressive, in this case.

Then his parents throw an actual curveball at him: Bruce Wayne is here, waiting for him in the sitting room they use to host the most esteemed of guests. Archie is leaving today, now, and his things will be shipped to him, should Bruce allow it. He doesn’t know how long this has been in the works for, doesn’t know if his parents knew ahead of time and chose to keep it from him until it was too late (though he figures that’s probably the case). Hell, they might have simply forgotten to tell him; it’s not as if he ever crosses their minds until they want him to do something anyways. His head spins. He feels a little like he can’t breathe. Had it happened this fast for Alexandria and Abigail? He honestly can’t remember.

He feels a bit detached as his parents lead him to the sitting room. Almost like he’s watching a movie play out, rather than it being something that’s actually, currently happening to him. His heart is racing by the time they enter the room and his eyes finally land on the man. Bruce Wayne. He’s more attractive in person, Archie can’t help but think. Very aesthetically pleasing. Pleasant on the eyes. He can’t look away as the man comes closer. Doesn’t move, barely breathes as his parents introduce him as ‘Archibald’—he doesn’t bother correcting them, knows it wouldn’t end well. He just holds his hand out for Bruce to shake like he knows he’s supposed to, when he’s supposed to. “It’s nice to finally meet you in person.” Archie has no idea how he managed to get that out and keep his voice sounding steady and sure, but he’s thankful that he did. His parents would never forgive him if he embarrassed them at a time like this.

Archie stands near the large windows of the study, anxiously watching as Bruce and Jason’s argument escalates. He’s never been good with conflict in his personal life, prefers to keep his head down and just take whatever the other person dishes out. It’s better that way. Jason’s sharp words are harsh and hurtful, sure, but Archie has long since gotten used to those sorts of verbal jabs—Jason isn’t the first person to not take a liking to him, and he’ll doubtfully be the last. Archie can handle it, even if it makes his stomach churn.

Today, though, Bruce overhears. Steps in and snaps back at Jason in Archie’s defense. He tries to keep the peace, to assure Bruce that it’s okay, really, it’s fine, but the man isn’t having it, and Jason clearly doesn’t like that. The growling undertone in his voice isn’t just frustration—it’s a challenge. Bruce, already a towering presence, squares his shoulders, growling out his own response, not backing down. Looking at the two of them and knowing what he knows, Archie isn’t sure which of them is more dangerous, at the moment.

His heart races as Jason bristles, and he sees the shift before the younger man even moves, the subtle tightening of his muscles—a telltale sign of what’s coming next.

Jason lunges and something in Archie snaps. He barely has time to process the blur of motion; the instant Jason moves, instinct takes over.

The suit he’d been wearing flutters to the ground in shreds as he crashes into Jason, the larger man’s back hitting the floor with a heavy thud. Archie lands atop him, looming over Jason with his hackles raised, large paws pinning him in place. The sound of snarling fills the air—his own, loud and vicious, as he bares his teeth. His heart hammers in his chest, but not from fear. It’s pure adrenaline, a primal need to defend.

Jason’s eyes are wide and startled, but Archie barely notices—his mind is too singularly focused on keeping Jason where he is, making sure he stays down. The world around him barely registers, only the press of Jason’s body against the ground and the deep rumble of the growl rippling through Archie’s chest.

Well. That certainly didn’t sound…appealing. Or in any way comfortable. Still. Archie couldn’t possibly take Manny’s bed, could he? Also got a dog bed. He recognized it was a joke, really, he did, but a part of him did still consider it, for a moment. He could, after all, turn into a wolf. Would it really be that big of an inconvenience, if it meant Manny got to keep his bed?

“I’m sure we’ll work something out.”

He’d have to think on that.

“…Wrench. Right.” Alright, so maybe this was going to be even more different than he was used to than Archie had originally thought. He wasn’t sure he’d ever actually even held a wrench, let alone used one (and that was assuming it was the tool he was thinking of).

Following Manny’s gaze to the closed door, he frowned. Manny’s tone was much more serious than it had been for anything else that had come out of his mouth. More than a little suspicious. Archie was no idiot, and he had a sneaking suspicion that ‘work’ wasn’t entirely what made up that room. He would respect Manny’s boundaries, though, even if it did have him a bit curious. “Noted. I’ll be sure to stay out of there.”

“The couch has at least two bumps in the cushion and this annoying zipper that’ll somehow keep poking your ass no matter how you turn.” A beat. “Also got a dog bed.” And yes, Manny’s throwing that in like it’s supposed to be funny. It was, to him at least, fuck knows how Archie was gonna take it. 

Either way, Manny was already noting to grab the good blanket from the trunks. HE was at least going to do his best to try and make this relatively comfortable for the kid. 

“Functional? Ah—yeah just... y’ may need to use the wrench on the counter to get the knob going.” Seemed a fair warning, at least one of the few. His eyes locked onto the door adjacent to the bathroom and pointed. “That one... don’t go in there. Even if you see it’s unlocked and open, don’t ever go in there.” A beat. 

“It’s... work.”

A rather lengthy description of the picnic thrown for the Times-Tribune newsboys in Scranton. The morning began with a parade through the city (with a stop to sing in front of the Times-Tribune office). Ham sandwiches, coffee, lemonade, and ice cream were served.

He fucked up.

Normally, Archie doesn't accept cases outside of his own pack's (fairly large) territory. He tries to avoid having to deal with the politics that come along with entering someone else's, not to mention the pissing contests, which, were those really necessary? Couldn't they all just act like the civilized people they were?

This time, though...

The woman hadn't been able to keep her sobs at bay as she described her situation—finally gathering up the nerve to leave her abusive husband, taking the kids with her, only for him to try and have her deemed mentally unstable, unfit to care for them. He was suing for custody. Terrified of what would happen to her children if left alone with the man, she'd come to him at her sister's recommendation. She'd pleaded with him to take on her case, even after Archie had explained that family law wasn't exactly his area of expertise. She'd all but fallen to her knees and started begging (and he had no doubts that she would have, if he'd outright said no).

Heart aching in sympathy, and sucker for a sob-story that he was, Archie had, of course, taken her on as a client, assuring her that she needn't worry about the payment. They could figure that out later. He'd gotten his things together and made the trip out, not expecting to run into any pack-related issues. Why would he? To his knowledge, there weren't any packs living in that area. So to arrive in town, only to smell an Alpha?

A big fucking issue.

Now, sitting in a little café, sipping at subpar coffee, he taps his fingers anxiously against his to-go cup and tries to figure out what to do. He can't just drop the client and go home. And coming into another's territory, only to turn tail, exit it, and then ask for passage would be a bit redundant. But still, it was rather rude of him to just be sitting there, not even trying to meet with someone to discuss things, wasn't it?

Round and round the thoughts go in his head, his anxiety only growing as time goes on. By the time the café door opens and the scent of Alpha smacks him in the face, his nerves are all but shot. Wide eyes glance up, only to immediately drop back down to where his hands are wrapped around coffee cup. With his shoulders practically up to his ears, he desperately wishes for the ability to disappear. Unfortunate for him that his wishes rarely come true.

He let the blanket fall away, shook his head as Manny spoke. "No, I...I can do it." Despite how shaken he felt, he was sure he could manage to get himself cleaned up on his own. He didn't need Manny's help in that sense, didn't want to put either of them through that. Might actually die of embarrassment if he did.

The hug was completely unexpected. For a moment, he froze, caught off guard, mind blanking out. When was the last time he'd been hugged? It wasn't long before he was sinking into it with a shudder, a small whine escaping him. Grown man or not, he'd just been through a traumatic experience. So, he buried his face in Manny's shoulder, as if he could hide himself from the world, and took the comfort that was being offered.

He ducked his head as his hair was ruffled, nodded and stepped into the bathroom. He started the shower, located a towel, and tried to ignore the way his hands were shaking. They would still, eventually. Because he was going to be fine. He was safe, now. He was safe.

Once he was clean and felt relatively more human—at least, didn't feel like he would fall apart with a light breeze, anymore—Archie wrapped the towel around his waist and stepped out of the shower. Blood was still slowly oozing from a few injuries, would probably ruin the poor towel, but he figured he could always just buy Manny a new set. The sight of the blood, of his injuries, made him feel a bit ill, but the good news was that he didn't think anything inflicted on him by the hunter would result in his immediate death. So that was something.

There were several things he probably could’ve said but decided to keep it to himself. Time and a place, Manny reminded himself, and both of those were entirely focused on getting Archie into… well… some kind of shape that could be vaguely considered functional.

“Here…” After getting the door locked, he lead the guy over to where the bathroom was and after a careful moment of consideration he carefully pulled the blanket away. Slowly, of course, Manny didn’t intend on spooking Archie any. “Think you can get yourself cleaned up? I could do it for you but uh—don’t think either of us will be happy about that sort of an experience.”

It—was a pretty poor man’s attempt at lightening the mood, Manny was pretty aware of that much. So instead of meditating on that, he went ahead and got the door open for him. “Go ahead, take all the time you need. I’m gonna get the kit out of my room and a fresh change of clothes for you. Maybe a minute, alright?”

Probably also not reassuring, so with the blanket tossed over his shoulder he brought the kid in for a careful and reassuring embrace. “No hunters here, nobody that’ll hurt you anymore. You’ll be safe here.” With one last careful ruffle to his hair, Manny then stepped back to disappear into his room and collect something relatively comfortable for Archie to change into.

That had Archie pausing. “A Homeowner Association?” Red flags immediately went up in his mind, a frown tugging at his lips. Looking up with furrowed brows, he turned in his seat to face Manny. “There could be an HOA specifically for something as small as a condominium building.” He didn’t think the size of the town mattered all that much. “But Mrs. O’Leary didn’t mention anything about an HOA, and it’s certainly something that should have come up in our discussions at some point, as they’re the ones who would have been enforcing the rules she’s accused of breaking.”

One hand was held out for the file Manny held. “Do you mind if I take a look at that? Something isn’t right about this.” And it could be exactly what he needed to win this case.

A small noise of thought to that, already pouring over a file. “Probably could… coverups happen but they’re not perfect.” A beat, a quick look around before holding up a hand. “Mean, by our standards. Or at least that’s how the guy who handles the aah… strangely clawed up cases explained it to me.”

Manny was sure he wasn’t going to need to explain any further, so he continued on. Glance over, switch page, glance over—maybe arch a brow at something or two that seemed a bit interesting. Huh… maybe he should’ve stuck to less specialized detective work. “Got something here ‘bout a contracting company being suspect about their water line installation. Homeowner’s statement mentions how they hired them based on the suggestion of the HOA…” A beat. “Didn’t even know we were big enough to have an HOA.”

Something not many people know about Archie is that he’s dyslexic. Most days, he feels as though he has a pretty solid handle on it. He does all his own casework and is an avid reader in his downtime. Sure, he has his bad days, but the good ones are far more frequent. However, since moving in with Bruce, he’s been struggling. Archie is well aware that disruptions to daily routines or unexpected changes can create additional stress, leading to more pronounced challenges with dyslexia.

He’s fairly sure that suddenly finding himself engaged to a man he knows next to nothing about, moving in with said man, and turning his entire future into one big uncertainty counts as an unexpected change.

It’s especially bad today. He’s been staring at the same page of his file for the past forty-five minutes, now. Watching the letters flip and dance around, showing a complete disregard for his need to actually read them. More papers and files are spread out around him, a few decorated with sticky-noted annotations, but far less work done than he’d have liked, considering he’s been at it all morning. His elbows are braced on the table as he glares down at the page, hands fisted in his hair. Sharp pinpricks of pain light up his scalp, but he doesn’t let up. He needs to get this done. If he just tries hard enough, he can will the letters to fall in line. He can.

He can.

Distantly, he’s aware of someone entering the room. Of his name being called. But he’s too busy glaring and squinting at the page and muttering under his breath, to really notice. He takes a second to rub at his eyes, hard enough to see stars, before he’s back to pulling at his hair. Is so lost in his own frustration that he barely registers the fact that whoever else is in there with him has moved next to him.

It isn’t until a pair of hands are on his, gently untangling his fingers from his hair, that he really cottons on to the fact that he’s no longer alone. Blinking rapidly, he forces his gaze away from his work. Turns to look and see who—oh, it’s Bruce.

Bruce, who uses his thumb to smooth out the crease between Archie’s brows, his other hand still holding onto Archie’s. He opens his mouth to say something, to ask what Bruce is doing there, if he needs something, but the words die in his throat.

Because Bruce is tipping his chin up and leaning down and then his lips are on Archie’s and Archie’s mind goes blank. He goes a little cross-eyed for a second, still staring wide-eyed at the other man in shock, before his brain seemingly reboots and he realizes that oh, he should maybe be kissing him back. That he wants to kiss him back.

Huh. That’s a new development.

His eyes close as he leans into the kiss, the hand that Bruce isn’t holding coming up to cup the side of his neck. It’s soft and slow and thoroughly distracting. Leaves him out of breath, his lips tingling, mind full of static, when Bruce finally pulls back enough to let him breathe. Archie’s cheeks are flushed. He can’t seem to look away from the somewhat amused glint in Bruce’s eyes. Can’t really recall why he was so frustrated just moments ago, not that he’s thinking too hard on that, right this second.

“What…you…what was that for?”
