Antivan Crows - Marriage Rituals
So, a lot of this is headcanon but pulls from current canon content. The Crows aren’t specified to have any specific marriage rituals unique to them BUT their roots derived from the Chantry. With that in mind, the Crows traditionally do follow the Chantry and adhere to those marriage rituals and customs. Obviously the Crows can be incredibly diverse so there is a high chance of other rituals from different cultures and religions taking place - I genuinely believe it really does depend on the House or individuals. One of the few things that is mentioned about the Crows is that they do tolerate same-sex relationships and such.
Arranged Marriages
Arranged marriages are incredibly common with the Crows, especially with the Talon Houses or other noble Houses affiliated with the organization. Marriage is used as a political tool to tie two Houses together and form contracts between the two for a variety of reasons. However, marrying into a House doesn’t necessarily mean an individual is automatically afforded all the rights and privileges of that House. As is common for the Talon Houses, if you marry into the House you may take their name but you won’t have the same power and influence as your partner might. This is specifically for Houses where leadership is determined by blood - House Dellamorte is a fantastic example of this. Caterina was First Talon - her husband was the partner to First Talon but would have never been eligible to succeed her should she die. He also did not have the influence Caterina did and was not considered a part of Crow leadership at all. There is of course some level of basic respect but not in the same vein as the actual Crow from that House.
Non-Crows married into Houses never have any influence or power within the Antivan Crows. They would be respected as the partner of the Crow but not as a Crow themselves. Even if they’d wed to a Talon. You cannot skip Crow training and rites of passage simply by marrying a Crow. Most of the time it's encouraged to stick to Crow & Crow marriages simply because there’s more to gain for the Houses but it's not a requirement.
Dowry
This is an incredibly common tradition between the Talon Houses and noble Cuchillo Houses within the Crows. Especially when an arranged marriage is a part of the equation. It can be anything from goods, coin, or services. For Talon Houses it is very common for marriage between the two to come with an agreement of unification in any future political issues that might occur. One example of this can be found in Tevinter Nights, where two Talons were dating with the prospect and unifying their Houses in future negotiations and such.
In almost every case of Crows marrying across Houses there is something being bartered or gained in the background.
Vows
Very dependent on the individual Houses and their cultures. Normally vows are spoken in common at the bare minimum and often reference Andraste or something in that cultural vein. Occasionally Houses might have their own custom vows as well to signify their loyalty to the Crows. This tradition really depends on the individual and most of the time isn’t really set in stone.
Misc. Traditions
The soon-to-be-married pair are normally not allowed to see each other the day before the actual wedding. Crows have a fun tradition of trying to see if they can break said tradition without being caught. It is actually a whole spectacle and usually involves some form of gambling. If they get caught they usually get shamed - but in good fun. Crows don't take this one as seriously beyond making a sport out of it.
Crows participate in lovers knots traditions. They tie a knot together to symbolize the strength of their bond.
Crow-specific Traditions (Meaning Crow x Crow ONLY)
It’s considered a small rite of passage between the two Crows to embark on a contract together after their wedding. The contract is assigned by the leadership of that House - or a Talon should it be a marriage involving a leader. If it’s another Talon? They’ll trust another Talon to do the honor of selecting the contract for the pair. It’s considered good luck and indicative of a good future between the two should they succeed in their contract together. If they can fight and work well together in battle then they work well together in general.
Another tradition is exchange daggers specifically picked out by the pair for each other. It’s a secret until the day of the wedding where they exchange them alongside whatever rings or jewelry they might have as well. Tradition expects them to use said dagger on the contract chosen for them afterwards and only on that contract - it’s stored away permanently after that. The daggers don’t have any requirements beyond needing to be genuine and real and capable of actually killing someone.
Weddings are pretty average generally depending on the House. A little party, just filled with a bunch of paranoid Crows. It’s usually a little more tense if non-crows are there just because there’s less trust. Crows don’t allow anyone outside to handle their food or drinks and alcohol is usually served only at afterparties or until the non-crows depart. They are a bit of a paranoid bunch for good reason - they have a lot of enemies.
Bigger Houses almost always require any future children to be trained AS Crows. It is a part of negotiations between two different Houses to determine which House those children will be a part of in the future. Normally the bigger, more influential House has priority but it can be waived. Larger, more influential Houses usually prefer to keep their leadership within the same family so if it’s a child related to leadership they are almost always considered a part of that House.

Headcanon: Whenever Rook addresses Spite when he’s not possessing Lucanis , they try to look where they think he may be, based on cues the Crow gives. They want to be polite to Spite, but are worried that they will look stupid trying to talk to Spite, while facing in the wrong direction.
Lucanis assures them that they always guess correctly, but neglects to tell them that even when they are looking the wrong direction, Spite always moves to wherever they think he might be.

“ It was noticeable. That you avoided water at least ” Lucanis admits, the assassin all too aware of the other’s aversion to water. It was hard not to notice given how often they would avoid the quickest paths in exchange for remaining on dry land. Of course he’d never mentioned it, trusting Lark to guide them to victory even when the choice seemed questionable.
His eyes drift out to the water for a moment, observing the small ripples in response to their gondola’s movements. Lucanis keeps the boat as steady as he can, ensuring their pace is slow and manageable. It’s calming in a way, his nerves from before slowly settling as they enjoy this moment alone. No Caterina, no Crows - just them.
“ Well, one would hope my first concern would be you and not what the other Houses think ” He responds dryly, a chuckle slipping out at the jest. “ Nor am I eager to beat House Arainai’s record for shortest lived Talon considering Viago ”
Yes, he could envision it now. A slip of poison in his morning coffee, courtesy of the Crow’s Master Poisoner. He had already felt the scrutiny of the other man after they had finalized their plans, a few hushed words exchanged behind closed doors. Though he knew he had the other’s respect they had known each other for quite a while - Viago didn’t concede to him as easily as he did Caterina. Nor did Lucanis want him to.
“ Ah, I do recall someone mentioning that one a few days ago. We should have time. I wanted to give you time to settle in instead of rushing into things completely ” Lucanis speaks a bit softly, a matching smile on his lips as he really looks at her. After a moment he straightens up a little, holding out a hand for her. “ You can sit closer if you’d like. I promise I’ll make sure you stay dry”

I have no idea if I've seen this before or not, but Dragon Age/Antiva/Antivan Crow headcanon time:
I like to believe there's a national dance that's inspired by the (in)famous guild. Semi-based off of traditional dances from Spain and Northern Italy but imagine if it involved ribbons (or even masks depending on the region.) But anyway, just imagine!
It's a dance and you've the "Crow" partner (symbolized by a silver or black ribbon) and the "Mark" Partner (which is indicated by a red ribbon.)
And basically the dance is the Crow going after the Mark with lots of intimate intertwining fingers, dips, and swishing of ribbons around before finally the Mark is "dead" in the Crow's arms by the end.
This is not me justifying having a cool dance for my Rook and Lucanis to have. Nope no not at all. Don't know what you're talking about. Nope

Open Starter - Lucanis & Spite (Mostly Spite)
Lucanis raises his arm up quickly, catching one of the Venatori’s kusarigama with the blade of his rapier. Their eyes widen slightly as he yanks it backwards, forcing them forward just as he brings his knee up. His knee collides with their stomach hard, pulling a strangled gasp from them before they collapse. He quickly pulls back his blade, letting the chain slide off before he begins pursuing his next target.
Spite’s power runs through his body, enhancing his natural strength with the added bonus of wings he can call on as needed. They work in tandem as they fight off the rest of the Venatori beside their companions, the demon enhancing his abilities while Lucanis manages the fine motor control. The separation of skills works well for them. Up until it doesn’t.
It's a small opening, but just big enough for one of the Venatori’s blood mages to get a shot in. Lucanis feels the sudden rush of power that isn’t Spite’s just as it collides with him, causing him to stumble backwards as he takes the blow to chest. Spite lets out an annoyed snarl as he’s suddenly thrust into control, eyes glowing purple as he searches for the transgressor. His wings pop out as he suddenly lunges, releasing the rapier and using his bare fists instead to attack the unfortunate mage.
Surprisingly, even as the battle is finally concluding, Spite is still there. He glances around for a moment, rage subsiding as confusion rises for a moment. Spite raises his hand, tapping the side of his head before he looks up.
“ He is gone. ”

That Ring that Caterina uses to alert the Crows she's alive and kicking? The one that she originally gave to Lucanis's mother, in order to show her favour?
What if when attempting to return the ring to her, she insists that Lucanis keeps it, to give to someone he shows favour to?
And Lucanis wants to, he has the exact person in mind (and I suspect Caterina knows exactly who), but he cannot bring himself to do it.
Imagine him sitting on his cot after Tearstone Island, twisting the ring between his fingers, regretting that he kept putting it off.

Lucanis closes his eyes for a moment, thinking back on the details of that particular contract. It had been a while ago and Illario had been the one he charged with freeing them. “ Unfortunately I don’t know. They were not in good shape when we found them. We could only offer a chance for their lives not a guarantee”
That was the difference, he thinks, between him and a genuinely good person. They might have checked on them later, ensuring that everything went to plan. He didn’t. Lucanis chuckles again as he opens his eyes once more, taking another bite of his food. “ You give me too much credit, Rook. But I am thankful for it nonetheless. I suppose you owe me another story about a mission you did now though”
He found himself absolutely fascinated in the story, leaning forward against and bracing himself against the table, fork still in hand. He had so many questions about it now. Red Lyrium to produce wigs? How did that work? What did they look like? Those poor people. Were they okay now?
"I don't think it's hypocritical." He decided on, settling back in his seat and not wanting to seem like an overeager child hearing a story for the first time.
"It just makes you an Antivan Crow with a set of morals." He pointed out. "And a good person, for not leaving them there like that. Do you know what happened to them after?"

i have seen a lot of posts about lucanis & illario lately, that specifically call out that some of the things Lucanis says about him are kinda mean. usually in context of 'yes what illario did was fucked up but they BOTH went thru the fucked up training and lucanis says shit to him too' etc etc. and i'll be honest as someone who does have a contentious/estranged/very-low-contact sibling relationship. everything lucanis said came off as super mild to me and they should both be WAY nastier to each other actually. yes even when you include their dynamic in wigmaker job which was both more lighthearted And heartfelt. but like if you want realism they should be going from that to 1 minute later annoyed enough to break out the super cutting remarks dragging up the worst things the other has ever done/said, specifically becuause they know it will hurt the other most. then i would believe it more tbh.
#idk just personal late night musing as i fail to Sleep#i know the idea of those posts is ''both of them are kinda fucked so why does illario get all the blame (besides caterina)''#well illario tried to have him Killed and frankly i am astounded lucanis keeps it to simply 'its easy to look good next to him'#and 'could you?' or whatver that other one on the roofs is#yes even for CROWS the assassin group and all#idk man. if my sibling and i are in each others presence for more than a couple hours at family things i literally have to go punch walls#maybe if we got to see lucanis & illario actually have it out i would feel more ways about it with everyone else#but i'll be honest it came off to me as just pretty bland#been trying to mentally get more into illario bc he's all over my dash these days but i only see meta about how he could be Healed#and nothing bout how they should say the worst things in the world to each other and then deck it out. which is what i would like to see#so alas#ramblings#jade plays dav#lucanisposting#lucanis dellamorte#illario dellamorte#dragon age: veilgaurd#datv spoilers#da4 spoilers#idk i just cant get worked up about lucanis' lines like that. they're so toned down. compared to what i am used to in Real Life lol#i do think the writers tried!! i just think it’s uhhhhh one of those dynamics that is really hard to capture unless you’ve Experienced it#i just think the lines we hear in game would be Nothing to illario compared to what they have assuredly already shouted at eaxh other in the#past

“You didn’t seem to complain the last time I took your pants off.”
He flushes at the reminder. “Yes. Well.” He’s gratified that Lucanis also seems a little flushed. “I can take this off now. Why don’t you take yours off in the meantime?”
Lucanis shoots him a startled look.
Suddenly he feels very silly. “Ah. Never mind. Too much, huh?”
“No, Rook…” Lucanis brings his hands up to frame his face, careful around the burns. “I want this.” He’s very intent, voice low and sincere. “I didn’t… I will admit I didn’t think that far ahead.”

Lucanis remains silent as Rook speaks, ignoring Spite for the moment despite the urge to chuckle at Spite’s rudimentary solution. His gaze remains on them, expression softening slightly before he nods. “ Being a leader is one of the most challenging tasks one can take. I would not wish it on my worst enemies…except for Zara of course ” The corners of his lips tug slightly, a smile threatening to break his composure once again. “ and perhaps Solas, since he is the cause of this ”
He slowly pulls his hands back to give Rook a little space, reaching into his pocket to pull out a small cloth. Lucanis offers it out to them so they could clean their face, canting his head to the side slightly. “ You do not need to be a leader here, Rook. You can be just another Crow completely in over their head with a Contract against gods... I do not think even Viago could handle something like that gracefully” This time he does smile, leaning back in his chair slightly before his eyes drift back towards the kitchen.
“ My offer from before still stands. You must be tired ”
there was no resistance from rook, they followed the guide and felt the hands rest on both cheeks. he's warm - well anyone was warm to rook when they are always cold to the touch. blinking a few times to try and ignore the tears, more just stayed clinging to their face. trying to just look at lucanis, rook knew their gaze still wanted to avert out of guilt for being vulnerable.
but they sat there, looking at the other crow and listened. their heart was out of control, and their hand shook as lucanis spoke about the truth. it's true, rook did everything for everyone to the best of their ability, and it is exhausting being selfless. "..you're right.." they finally speak after gaining some control of their voice from outright crying... but then a chuckle left them when they heard spite's ever useful comment - of course that's the only thing they hear during this from him.
"sure, we'll kill him one day spite. just for you." they smirk a bit before looking properly at lucanis despite tears still forming naturally. "...thank you, lucanis... i guess i just... hit a breaking point. it's stressful being a leader." they remark before trying to liven up the mood
"never recommend me to replace viago, ever."

As funny as Spite is when he's being a chaotic gremlin who wants to eat candles and is jealous of Curiosity's feet, I'd like to see his dangerous side being explored more, along with the dangers of possession.
Possession is a big deal. We see it in Anders, whose anger and past trauma twists Justice into Vengeance, and their emotions being intertwined creates an endless feedback loop of misery and obsession until Anders can't stop himself from doing something drastic, very similarly to Solas. They have different goals/ideals, but they have similar (near) unstoppable drive to fulfill their perceived purpose no matter what the people around them say, a purpose that sends them hurtling along a road paved with destruction. Anders at the end of DA2 is very similar to a pure spirit/demon in the sense that his purpose is pretty much all that he is, consumed with the need to liberate mages and avenge them against chantry and templar oppression (also a similar flavor to Mythal in a way. Benevolence (help people) -> Retribution (avenge people))
Spite as an emotion can have a positive effect for a person (succeeding/persevering out of spite), but it's not a positive emotion. Spite as a demon is a creature of pettiness/anger/resentment, a cousin or brother to Vengeance pretty much. Spite physically hurts Lucanis (only once that we actually see in the actual game and I would have liked it to be a more recurrent/tangible problem) when he doesn't get his way. He attacks Illario and would have killed him if he had his way. He doesn't process emotions as mortals do, so outside of anger/resentment etc, he doesn't really get genuine affection or love or any positive emotion that isn't motivated by hurting people and/or not doing what they want, because again, he's a being of raw emotion with a specific realm of purpose.
So what about Lucanis and Spite? Does them being intertwined change Lucanis' personality in any way? Enhance his anger? Make him more determined than he already is, but also less able to forgive? Does Spite change because of Lucanis in any way? Does it make his emotions or thought processes more complex? Is the particular way they were bound together, different from Anders' willing possession, make them more separate entities, considering Anders basically absorbed Justice until they were fused together? Does spending time outside of the Fade let Spite learn like it did for Cole, even if their situations were different, without changing his core nature?
The “learning” part is kind of alluded to in the hardened Lucanis path where he wants to find a way to part with Spite once he's done with his contract, and Rook can mention that Spite might have evolved because he's a demon who's “learned to work alongside people” (or something to that effect). I would have liked a bit more of that topic in both paths for Lucanis. Spite likes Rook when they're being vengeful or making dark jokes, because they're acting in a way that pleases his nature, and he does ends up trusting them/being fond of them in his own way. Is he also partly influenced by Lucanis' emotions and fondness for Rook (whether friendship or romance, without truly being able to feel or understand these emotions for himself)?
I feel like Lucanis' possession is simultaneously presented as a big deal but also doesn't end up having much of an effect in the grand scheme of things. Spite was introduced as a threat and treated as one in the scene with Illario, but he's written as a very lukewarm demon otherwise and he doesn't feel very dangerous at all. I would have liked more from him, more details, more possible negative consequences, more actual danger to Lucanis' wellbeing if Spite gets his way.
Is there a possibility in an alternate universe where Lucanis could have gone down a darker path similar to Anders', considering he wasn't in the best mental state when Rook gets him out of the Ossuary (an understatement)? Maybe if Rook lets Treviso get blighted? Could Lucanis' caring nature lose against Spite because of the despair and resentment he feels in that route? Spite would feed off his anger and also fan its flames, creating the same kind of endless negative loop that Anders was stuck in, until Lucanis was changed as a person. Angrier. Pettier with any perceived slights. More Vengeful even towards less deserving targets.
Again, we kind of get that in the sense that we can't choose what to do with Illario at the end of his quest but he just... gets imprisoned. (which is the choice I made in my first playthrough with unhardened Lucanis anyway because I just can't see in what world what Illario did would be forgivable with just a slap on the wrist. Maybe I'm also a demon of Spite, who knows)
It's a very lukewarm vengeance at best because in the canon hardened path, even if we get *told* Lucanis is more depressed and less trusting, he doesn't actually change much as a person and retains his love for his family and his caring nature, so it doesn't seem like Spite has influenced him in any way.
So yeah. Maybe in an AU. Or maybe I just like angst a lot, don't look at me I'm just bouncing ideas off the tumblr wall!
#lucanis dellamorte#veilguard spoilers#dragon age veilguard#also mildly veilguard critical I guess but it's more me musing about alternate universes

there really is something very sweet and intimate about Spite reaching out for Lucanis’s partner (I don’t specify rook because might not be a rook yknow?) during some kind of night terror or whatever. Like hey. I trust you deal with this.
But there’s also something incredibly comical about the idea of spite having to just. Randomly yoink a platonic friend/rook out of nowhere because there’s not really an opportunity to ask? Just. Hey. Help. Did not ask permission but now you’re here so. Fix this.
I think spite, even after inner demons and learning boundaries, still has a tendency to just out Lucanis at times? He doesn’t understand the concept of hiding emotions/feelings (and also doesn’t like it because he’s particularly sensitive to them). So he’s prone to just exposing Lucanis if he tries to brush things off.
#✦ ooc ✦#✦ fandom: dragon age ✦#✦ muse: lucanis dellamorte ✦#im in bed right now but I was thinking about this#like yeah spite learns boundaries but he’s also? a spirit the concept of not sharing feelings is foreign to him

A headcanon about Lucanis before he and Rook actually get together. He dozes off, and after a suspiciously deep nap, he awakes with a piece of the Lighthouse chess set clenched in his hand.
It's the Rook Piece.
And no matter how many times he returns it, he wakes up with him holding it.
