Running was starting to become more & more of a challenge. The longer she stayed in the city , the more ways it seemed there were for people to find her. Traffic cameras , security cameras in stores , the ways they could track down Anya Barnes in the city were endless. No , they needed to get more off the grid. They needed to find a way to disappear completely.
There was no record of Anastasia Barnes ever existing. Born in secret , & whisked away to where her & her brother would be imprisoned until they could be properly trained to obey. She got out , able to find a way to plan a rescue for the rest of her family. All they needed was a place to lay low until they could track down Jamie & their father. Then they could find their freedom somewhere nobody would ever find them.
The answer to Anya's problem was definitely in the country , away from the city & where there were ways for her to not be found. She just needed to find a way to stay out of the city. After a couple nights pouring over where to go , she started looking at National Parks. Yellowstone catching her attention right away. Plenty of wilderness to escape to. It was perfect.
Anya stole a truck , had some cash for gas , & took only what would fit in one duffle bag , before hitting the road. Anya was used to staying up for days on end. From a young age she made to do so. The drive from New York to Bozeman was going to be long , but they could more than handle the trip. They drove & didn't stop unless it was for gas or food. Small things she didn't have to wait for before hitting the road again. Before long she was finding her way to Montana , & like everyone who ever set foot in that state , marveled at how beautiful it was.
There wasn't a place in the state like it , that was for sure. Even Anya , who had seen some of the most magnificent mountains in all of Europe , found herself breathless for the first time from beauty. So much that they chose to pull that stolen truck to the side of the road to get a better look. Nobody was gonna find her out here. She could take a few moments. Turned out she wasn't the only one thinking it was a great place to pull over & check out the sights. Or someone else's property would be a better case.
Seeing the other vehicle pulled over , eyes squinted to try & focus more on what she was seeing. A group of men , all seeming to be dressed the same , & another that definitely wasn't one of them. Spend enough time working under a unit , & you started to pick out who was part of the group , & who wasn't. She thought to just keep going. The whole point of being here was not to get noticed , stopping to be a good Samaritan definitely got you noticed. She was about to keep going , till she spotted several weapons. This man was going to die , & something told her to stop & do something.
❝ Can't believe I'm fuckin doin this. ❞ She cursed to herself. Reaching for her knife & gun , before hopping out of the truck & charging for the group in the field. Measured feet too controlled strides down into the field. Noticing the cut wire where they must have gotten in , along with their truck not too far from her. The thought crossed her mind to sabotage the truck , but seeing how quickly this man was going to get beat to death made her think otherwise. When she was close enough to them to get their attention , she gave a click of her tongue. Once she had her attention , she gave a nod in the form of a challenge.
❝ Hey. ❞ That was the only warning those men got before a booted foot landed at the center of one of the men's chest , kicking him back a considerable amount , before pulling out a knife & looking at the other men now focused on her. They might have guns. But she didn't need one to put them in the ground. Instead of showing any fear , she narrowed her eyes at the men squaring up & smirked. ❝ You're gonna watch that & still think you're walkin outta here? ❞

Anya hasn't had much of a Birthday from what he has gathered , never anyone to truly care about the occasion , always treated like a well oiled machine rather than a human being . He tried to pay attention to the small things she liked , the things that really seemed to matter to her . Hm ... that's when he saw it && he could only thank society's obsession with The Nutcracker as a festive tradition for it . A music box with a spinning ballerina on top . Sure enough he's wrapped it && awaits for her at the dinner table at breakfast . " Morning to you . " ﹔ @halfdent.
The sun had been what woke them up that morning. UNUSUAL TO THE NORMAL NIGHTMARES. What that meant however , was rather than being up before the morning songbirds were , Anya had found themselves sleeping until the winter morning sunlight BATHED THEIR FACE IN LIGHT. Gently rousing them to greet the day. A stretch & their body takes up the length of the bed. Letting out a sigh & a groan. The kind you let out after a 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓 night's sleep.
She hadn't remembered what day it was yet. They 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 remembered when it came around. Their birthday HADN'T BEEN IMPORTANT WHEN SHE WAS GROWING UP. Weapons didn't have birthdays. Weapons weren't born , they were 𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐄. Shaped and formed from pieces into something to bring harm. No , birthdays never really felt like something that BELONGED TO THEM. Something they could watch others enjoy if they were lucky. Then , when their life was their own … The people they wanted to celebrate that with … were 𝐆𝐎𝐍𝐄.
But things were different now. They weren't alone. NOW THEY HAD HARVEY. Where at first things were tense between them , a wounded animal feeling caught in the corner , & the man who want to right all the wrongs DONE BY OTHER MEN. If he was anything , he was 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓. He knew that they needed time , & space to learn to trust him , & he had given them 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 , & more. One of those things was showing her everything in like that she had missed out on. Last night's activity being their person 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 , a good black and white movie on the couch. ‘It’s A Wonderful Life' a movie they had thoroughly enjoyed , before 𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐋𝐘 retiring to their room to sleep. Sometimes Harvey slept in the floor , but they had opted to spend the night alone , SO THEY COULD SPEND THE NIGHT DRAWING SOME OF THE FEATURES HE HAD THAT CAUGHT THEIR EYE. By the time they ventured into the kitchen in dining room , it was nearing close to 7am.
His voice caught her attention 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 , followed by the spread of food waiting for them both to enjoy. LIPS CURLED UP INTO A SMILE. Hand reaching up to itch the back of their head with a bit of a SHEEPISH SMILE. ❛❛ Morning , you really put out the spread didn't you? ❜❜ The food , & the man who had made it all had been noticed , BEFORE EYES FOUND THE WRAPPED PRESENT. When they did though , brows furrowed in 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐘. Picking up the small wrapped box before looking at him. ❛❛ You got this for me? ❜❜ There was a genuine confusion there , but no less gratitude. Mismatched eyes looked back to the gift , & a moment later those eyes widened , realizing they had forgotten a very important day. ❛❛ Боже мой , what day is it? ❜❜ There should have been enough context clues to tell them 𝐄𝐗𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐋𝐘 what day it was … The day they always forget … Their birthday.

( Q. ) send 🛏️ for my muse’s reaction to yours crawling into bed with them ﹐ @depictedmorada.
IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANYA NOT TO STIR WHEN SOMEONE CRAWLED INTO BED. But just as quickly as they stirred upon the motion of bedding shifting , & the mattress moving slightly when the other climbed in , offered comfort along with her familiar scent. Maddy had a way of being someone that was a NATURAL at calming Anya down. Something about her just sat naturally with Anya. Helped ground her.
Arms reached out to grab her. Pulling her CLOSE to Anya's form , dressed in the usual panties & tank top used for pajamas. The usual for a lazy night in. ❛❛ I tried t'wait up … I didn't know when you'd be coming in. ❜❜ They leaned in , nuzzling at their neck before allowing them some room. ❛❛ Hopefully your night out was pleasant? ❜❜ Anya wasn't much for GOING OUT. Preferring to be more of a homebody than anything else. On the occasion , they'd come out. But they much preferred staying at home.

cont. from HERE with @katarinawilliams.
Anya smiled , watching him approach to 𝐖𝐑𝐀𝐏 his arms around her. She had been working on getting on his good side for a few weeks now. Determined to find 𝐀𝐍𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 that might prove a problem for them and their own dealings. Manipulative , sure. But who in this sort of business didn't use people like this? It happened all the time. She smiled , letting a sheepish look cross her features at the promise of him making it up to them. ❛❛ & what did you have in mind Darling? ❜❜ A hand reached to gently card through his hair.

@solaridust said: ❝ there’s going to be payback, you know. ❞ - jason bourne
Head tilts to the side while one side of their lips curl up in a grin. Eyes study him while a hand holding a cigarette lifts the vice to her lips for a hit. She's heard threats like this before. They stopped scaring her a long time ago. Now they're seen as nothing but a challenge. Hands that have done far too much lower the slender cigarette to an ash tray on the table. Tapping it out wile loudly blowing out a puff of smoke. Taking her time before speaking.
❝Oh I'm countin on it Buddy.❞ Finally they look up from the ash tray to him. A serious & challenging look in her eyes. ❝& when it comes…I'll be more than ready t'send em back a message. Make no mistake about that.❞

( Q. ) i forget how blue the sky can be outside the city. ﹐@heircurse.
EVERY NOW & AGAIN , ANYA LIKED TO DO THIS. Just get the hell out of the city , & go spend some time out in nature. Before obtaining freedom , OUTSIDE TIME was only something they got when training called for it , or they were out on a mission. Being outside wasn't something they often were able to do , so now they took the time to MAKE SURE that they got out and enjoyed it. Some people were able to have the luxury of not being kept locked up in a bunker their entire childhood. It must have been a lovely life.
Anya looked to Harry when he spoke. Letting out a slightly HEAVIER sigh than usual , a smile on her face to show that there was no irritation. No anger there. If anything , she thought it was nice to see him enjoying something so many saw as something that happened every day. ❛❛ Makes you wonder why everyone thought it was such a good idea t'build all those buildings blocking them out. ❜❜ They were kidding of course. They understood PROGRESS. Even came to appreciate it on many an occasion. ❛❛ I like t'just get away from time to time. Just enjoy being out here. Away from everything … Away from everyone. ❜❜

𝐉𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐎𝐍 ; ❝ The world is a courtroom, but your life is the judge. ❞ ﹐ @jkelso.
The brunette looked up from the file they were reading through. A late night , they were 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄𝐋𝐘 to be here at least another couple hours sifting through files of evidence. The comment , while though provoking … Appeared to come out of nowhere. Brows furrowed , & head tilted in contemplation of the phrase. ❛❛ Nice quote , ❜❜ They commented skeptically. They looked to the file , before folding the folder closed and leaning back slightly in the chair. ❛❛ What , do I look like I'm doing any judging in particular? ❜❜

𝐊𝐄𝐋𝐒𝐎 ; it has always been this way. ﹐ @jkelso.
Those words give the 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐍 in hiding pause. Hitting close to home in a way nobody could know , they kept it that way. The 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑 of making their life , their existence disappear , only to start over with a fresh life. Made that way by design , using it for their 𝐎𝐖𝐍 𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐓 now. It did however , give them a unique perspective on the subject. Shrugging their shoulders , Anya let out a breath , breathing out the smoke from a cigarette. ❛❛ 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭 𝐢𝐬 , 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭'𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲. ❜❜ A cold hard 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇 they knew from years of repeating those same words , just to make the hell they lived in something they could bare. ❛❛ 𝐓𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞. HARVEY TALKED A LOT. ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF THEM. It didn't usually make them nervous. Most of time , listening to him talk about whatever he felt like was just find with her. Nobody ever really cared to talk to them. Not anymore. A certain comfort had grown around being treated like you weren't there , right until you FELT what it felt like to be the only other person in the room.
A feeling , they thought they had long since forgotten. Convinced they were left FAR IN THE PAST , was brought forward. Memories of sitting around a table in a small town in the mountains. Sleepy … Boring … It was PERFECT.
Things he likely WANTED to know. Which ultimately was what pulled them back from their thoughts on memories long ago. Trying instead to focus on the present. The here & now. He wasn't asking for much … But also so much.
What he was asking them for was TRUST. Trust that they could let their guard down here at least. Something they couldn't recall ever doing. Even as a child on the run , the rule was always be armed. Jaw clenched , thinking about the weapon concealed in their belt. Hands felt CLAMY. Where they were once looking up at him , eyes focused around his … Now looked down at the table. Shifting to look across the surface for … Something , they couldn't quite put their finger on.
❛❛ I let my guard down … & people get hurt. People die. ❜❜ Eyes wanted to wet with tears. But she bit those away before they could form. Eyes did however , lift back up to meet his. ❛❛ I don't want … Anyone to get hurt. ❜❜ There was a time when that wouldn't have mattered to them. That gun meant more than keeping her safe. It meant keeping HIM safe.
HE HAD NOTICED the little insecurities , the sudden bouts of nervousness , as stoic && solid as she was ; there was always the slightest cracks in any façade .
❝ NOTHING NICE ? I find that hard to believe , ANYA , really hard . ❞ Dishes set aside onto the drying rack he comes to join her at the table , taking the opposite seat . She's still a beaten dog , afraid , lost , 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐈𝐌 . He needed to earn that trust ... or not . She wasn't his possession ; but that's not why he is here , sat across the table from them right now . He saw someone in need && wanted to help . Like he said ' 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐀 𝐌𝐀𝐍'𝐒 𝐉𝐎𝐁 '.
❝ You're safe here , I know you don't believe me , NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I SAY IT ; I promise you , You're not a prisoner here , I would like you to stay though . I feel like I'm starting to get to know you . _ I would like to know you . ❞ He would have stretched fingers across the table , brush against her knuckles , he wanted to , he knows better .
He's aware of the weapon she keeps on her person at all times , swallowing hard , trying not to acknowledge it for too long . ❝ I'm not _ ❞ He refrains . ❝ I've never owned a gun , never used one . Could use one as you can see ; I'm a target too often . My position provokes a lot of unwanted attention . With that knowledge , you know that you always have the advantage here , so maybe I could ask you to put the weapon down , not get rid of it . ❞ he raised his hands waving to articulate he meant no offense . ❝ Somewhere easy for you to access for now , we don't have to carry weapons around the house . ❞ It won't come to that .

If they were any other person , they 𝐌𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 feel bad for letting him down a little bluntly. Though in all fairness , that really was about as nice as Anya got these days. Not to mention the fact that they had 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 enjoyed people poking into their business. Even something as harmless as asking where they were going could earn a glare from the assassin. They simply 𝐃𝐈𝐃𝐍'𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄 for people knowing what they were up to.
❛❛ 𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭. ❜❜ They affirmed the assassin turned legal assistant to the DA , with a bit of a 𝐓𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 lip about it. ❛❛ 𝐃𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐦' 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 & 𝐈 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰. ❜❜ For reasons they didn't need to be bringing up here & now. ❛❛ 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 , 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬. ❜❜
it seems everyone has a damn secret, and this city really likes to play puzzles with him. caspian himself had a secret, though he was not the best at hiding it. “ i suppose due to my job being a reporter, you are quite careful of what you reveal, so i will let it slide.” the gotham reporter made a sigh, and he kinda knew he was not going to get any answers whatsoever.
“ we all have our secrets after all, and i also have one too.” he really was the worst when it comes to hiding things. there is nothing to talk about, and caspian will have to act like this conversation never happened. then again maybe he can let in on HIS SECRET. there is no point of hiding it, but fearing she might go and tell.
he grabbed his notepad and just crossed out the topic.
no story from him today.

A brief chuckle left them. It was quite the 𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐃 road that Anya had been down to get to where they were. Many different people to thank along the way if you asked them. They really wouldn't be here if it weren't for people like Rogue. People who could show her that she didn't 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 to hate herself. ❛❛ 𝐀 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐈 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞. 𝐂𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐈'𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡. ❜❜ Using their boot , there's a kick to the body at their feet. Nudging it to check for any signs of life. ❛❛ 𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞. ❜❜
Rogue lets out a bark of laughter at the other's remark. She's surprised by the difference from Anya's usual demeanor, no matter how slight, though certainly not unpleasantly so. "Ain't that the truth. The backside's tricky like that; all that padding, and it still hurts like hell when ya land on it." She gives Anya a warm smile, offering a gloved hand to help them up.

For most of Anya's life , culture & the like they had been barred from. Any connection to something that made them unique was severed from the beginning , something she wouldn't discover until she was free from the Project. It made it something she wasn't willing to set aside so easily. Certainly not for anyone in a place like this. She prepared for Kayce not to know what that meant , only to be impressed when he confirmed her diet could be accommodated.
That would have been their excuse to make their exit , had it not been for the fact that he had managed to prove her wrong. Her brows arched while she crossed her arms & nodded. Feet shifted back & forth where she stood for a moment. If she decided to still deny him the invitation , she'd probably have to get the hell out of Bozeman , & even she couldn't keep going for much longer. She needed a place to at least eat & rest for a couple hours.
❝Don't drive too fast. Pretty sure this thing's radiator was gonna blow about three miles back.❞ Anya knew enough about cars , but only what she had picked up watching her dad work on them when they were able to stop long enough to be able to work on cars , which was just enough to know that it was likely not going to make it to another state.
Once he started toward his truck , she started back toward her own. Pulling the door open with more ease than most. Once in the car , that thought to not follow him & drive the other way came back. ❝What the hell am I doin?❞ Anya didn't trust people. Most people hadn't done a thing for her , & the worry that this was too convenient started distracting her with ease. She could handle herself , but their family also thrived on sticking together. Playing things safe while they were apart was a natural instinct. It wasn't until he was already pulling out of the field that her attention snapped back to Kayce's truck , & she quickly shifted into gear to follow him to his family's ranch.
The further they drove with more fields assumed to belong to Kayce's father , Anya became more & more amazed by the second. It became more clear as to why this was something that was fiercely protected , but also the amazement that this could all belong to one person. ❝Holy fuckin shit!❞ She spoke a bit breathlessly , only after that seeing the sign of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Slowly following Kayce up the long drive , she noticed wranglers in the field staring at their truck while it weakly attempted to rumble up the remainder of the driveway. The engine started rumbling just as she pulled up next to Kayce's truck before it started smoking.
❝Son of a bitch!❞ She hissed when the door opened. Hopping out of the truck & pushing the door shut with frustration before staring at the hood. Head hung down , & they shook their head with an exasperated laugh. ❝Great , this is just fuckin great!❞
@drekkavac - [Anya Barnes]
The invitation was just as likely to SCARE THEM OFF QUICKER as it was to make them feel welcome, so Kayce had figured it was worth a shot but he wasn't exactly COUNTING ON A 'YES'. Hell, he was already forming backup plans in the back of his mind in the brief few seconds that Ana took to make up their mind. By the time that silence was broken, he had the words lined up that he'd need.
As it so happened though, he wouldn't need it. There was a genuine willingness as well to accept the invitation, even with the reservations that she almost definitely had. And with valid reason. At this juncture, Ana technically had the UPPER HAND. Kayce had given them his FULL NAME, while all he knew about them was that they knew how to handle themselves in combat, they were BRAZEN, and their name was supposedly ANA. Then again, asking her for that, just MIGHT HAVE been enough to warrant her deciding that the risk wasn't worth whatever meal that Kayce had been offering as a show of GRATITUDE.
There was a brief arch in his brows at the inquiry into whether or not the Dutton's were able to accommodate a KOSHER DIET, but all that followed was a small, quiet hum, indicating more of a slight sense of intrigue more than anything else. There wasn't any surprise in his tone, though.
"Pretty sure Gator could cook a proper meal for anyone from Europe t' Africa, so Kosher won't be a problem. An' we got plenty 'a meats that ain't pork."
There was a decent presence of Judaism in BOZEMAN, even if Kayce wasn't overly familiar with the finer details of the culture or the religion. When it came to such matters of culture, if he had broad strokes enough to understand, he had enough DECENCY AND RESPECT to do what he could to not overstep or assume anything. His own family consisted of mostly atheists and those that treated the LAND as God. While he wasn't sure where he sat that way, it was none of his business how anyone else believed.
Kayce looked over to where Ana's vehicle was, then turned towards his own truck, pointing to it. "I'll go ahead an' pull out, if you wanna follow behind me."

A valuable lesson Anya learned was when to know they weren't welcome. Especially when they were trying to stay out of trouble , it was goo to get going & be gone before people wanted you gone. This man had indicated that her simply standing there wasn't the right move. Whether she could take him or not , beating up locals wasn't a good idea if you didn't want to get noticed. & from what she had gathered … This one happened to be a very important local.
Leaving seemed like the best option , & she was in the process of doing JUST THAT when a voice behind her , HIS VOICE , asked her to stop. Nerves went on edge almost instantly. A survival technique they had learned through the years. Hairs stood up on her neck. She wanted to keep going to the safety of the stolen vehicle , but given his tone , Anya turned around , waiting for what they assumed would be more questioning.
An invitation to dinner at face value seemed innocent enough. But Anya never took things at face value. One of the easiest ways to find out about someone was luring them into a false sense of security. There was the off chance that he was simply attempting to return the favor , but given what Anya had been through , it was always better to remain vigilant until you knew you weren't being deceived. Given that this man was some form of SPECIALIZED MILITARY , that part factored into everything he told her. Though , so did the concept that land like this often came at a dangerous price.
She shook her head at his explanation , showing that at the end of the day no offense was taken at him being cautious. ❝No need to explain. I've protected a lot less than this with more force. If I were in your shoes , I'dve been A LOT MORE on guard than you.❞ She took a moment to look around them. Wondering had her families life been different , if they might have ended up with something like this. Land like this they could call their own. Anya couldn't even call the truck they drove their own. ❝Dinner sounds nice …❞ She hadn't had a full meal in a week. Spending all her time on the road & eating little snacks here & there to keep her going. ❝Any chance it'll be Kosher?❞
@drekkavac - [Anya Barnes]
Kayce wasn't sure if Ana was slightly stumbling over their end of the conversation because they were HESITANT TO LEAVE, because they had a reason to try sticking around...or if they were just a little THROWN OFF KILTER by the fact that he had been so blunt about asking where she had gotten her experience that allowed her to bring down a man like a PROFESSIONAL ASSASSIN.
Either way, the youngest Dutton and CURRENT HEAD WRANGLER wasn't quite ready for her to GET THE HELL OUTTA DODGE just then. The answer that they'd given indicated that they were most likely Spec Op, but there was something that she definitely wasn't telling him. There was something deep in his GUT that was telling him that there was more to Ana than they were letting on. Just letting them walk away felt like more of a liability than a conclusion to the interaction.
While there were many that mistook him to be UNINTELLIGENT, it was far from the truth. People that didn't have any BRAINS didn't typically last too long in the situations that Navy SEALs found themselves in on a day to day basis. No, Kayce Dutton was more than capable of problem solving, and THINKING ON HIS FEET.
"Wait...!" He spoke up, though did so un a manner that didn't leave him sounding urgent or frantic. More like someone that had just been casually thinking something over to himself. He remained standing where he was as well, knowing better than to make himself seem INSISTANT.
"Look...'m sorry, 'bout puttin' ya through th' wringer," for what it was worth, he did mean that. At least for the time being, there was nothing that suggested that Ana meant him harm. "Thing about havin' this much land, people are always gunnin' for it. Sometimes literally. Can I make it up t' ya, invite ya for dinner? Our cook, Gator, he's never made a meal that I wasn't beggin' for seconds of."

Anya was used to this sort of introduction. Little games of questions to figure out as much as you could about the other. Watching body language done but both without really giving much of anything away. He seemed to take the name she gave him easily enough. They couldn't pick up too much suspicion aside from the usual. Which she couldn't blame him for being cautious considering what she had walked in on.
The name Dutton was one she had never heard before. It meant nothing to her , but she quickly learned that it should if she was sticking around. Something she still wasn't sure of. She was looking for a place that wasn't going to attract unwanted attention on her. They needed to be careful where they put their feet. The two continued to pick up their queues based on speech & movement , & mostly quiet or with short amounts of words exchanged.
For the moment there wasn't any hostility , but Anya never expected that to last.
Then that question came. The question of where she had served. Veterans shared that sort of stuff , not people who were forced to do what she had to. Her posture shifted. Stiffening ever so slightly to try & brace for the pull at memories of her life. ‘ Don’t blow this. Don't make him suspect too much. ' Lips rolled for a moment before moving to put her knife away slowly seeing as he had put his own weapon away.
❝Uh…Bit of everywhere really.❞ Easier to sell than listing places & hoping he would continue to believe she was a normal vet. Their shoulders were a bit deflated by the time she pushed out the remaining air from the deep breath in. Mismatched eyes began looking for somewhere else to look. Trying to fight the urge to step back when he stepped forward. ❝Well, since I've done my job scootin you outta the fire , I should get goin. Don't seem like the place t'overstay your welcome.❞
Her eyes couldn't help but catch the view around them. Trying to see where fences ended , & that was a trick in itself. A beautiful landscape in every direction you looked. Her dad would've love this place. Her eyes found Kayce's face again , her hand gesturing around them. ❝Hard t'believe this all belongs t'one guy. You're dad must be quite the guy.❞ Anya was garbage at goodbyes. Realizing that as she continued to ramble. A nervous chuckle pushed out of them before tucking some hair behind their ear before turning to head back for her truck.

He was more than familiar with the old adage TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY, so when there was a sort of polite demand for his name in return for them offering theirs when he asked, he nodded slightly a couple of times. He was subtly trying to read her body language, looking for any sign of potential treachery. Kayce was proficient in spotting SMALL MOVEMENTS that people tended to make, little twitches of their muscles, just before they moved.
As of the moment, there was nothing to defend against. He'd remain vigilant though, and he'd gather the intel that he could just from their interaction, even if he didn't get any more out of them than what MIGHT BE THEIR NAME.
"ANA, right..." His tone wasn't quite suspicious, but there was just a small tint of CAUTION. He looked them up and down with a quick glance before his eyes found hers once more.
"Well...wherever you're from, I know y'ain't LOCAL, otherwise my LAST NAME would be all ya needed."
Depending on who you were, in which circles you ran, the DUTTON family name was either FAMOUS...OR INFAMOUS. Seeing as how it didn't even prompt a second thought in their mind, Kayce noted that and slowly holstered his pistol. If she was looking to harm his family, a first name basis wouldn't MATTER. Nobody that ever came after the Duttons were likely to SPARE any of them.
"M'name is KAYCE," his answer finally came and his posture was visibly less tense. "An' uh...jus' for th' RECORD, my ass wasn't quite in need 'a SAVIN'. Ya scooted it th' hell outta th' fire though, an' I'm grateful for that." There was a brief pause as he hooked his thumbs into his belt loops, only taking a small step closer to them.
"So...where'd ya serve?"

She could have just kept on her way & not stopped. If she had done that , she could have avoided being questioned like she was about to attack him like they had. Their brows arched again in some slight surprise looking at the bodies laying around them as if wondering if he had been on this planet for what had just happened , before a scoff left her before she could stop herself. Disbelief clear in her expression.
This guy didn't trust people. That was more than clear. But she'd saved his life , & here he was thinking she had any business with him. She didn't even know him. The mention of ranch land came into the conversation , & her expression paused for a moment , before a slightly more understanding nod followed. Not by much , but she was observant enough since she got into town to not wander on someone's land.
She could tell he was a soldier. You didn't have aim like he did & not have served. She could even pick out a SEAL from her experience with them. This one she hadn't run into though. That was going to make things a lot less awkward.
❝Right , well … Next time I'll just wait for an invitation t'come help.❞ It wasn't an answer to his question , but he also was hardly someone Anya was concerned about yet. He wanted her name though. It was important nobody knew she was here. It was the whole reason she had come out here after all. Quick thinking searched her memory. Ana , she hadn't used that one in a while. Right cultural climate for it. & she needed to work quick.
❝I'm Ana. Now , do I get t'know yours , sorta customary where I'm from t'get on a first name basis when ya save someone's ass.❞

Kayce's gaze had shifted almost instantly to the FINAL TARGET after he had concaved the fourth man's SKULL with the butt of his pistol. The son-of-a-bitch was heading right for the person that had come in to assist Kayce, and there was no way in HELL he was gonna let her get hurt because of him-...
Whereas previously he'd felt like he was experiencing life in SLOW MOTION, watching this stranger earnestly IN-ACTION made Kayce feel as though someone had pressed the FAST-FORWARD button on his visuals. She moved like the wind, and in the process, managed to take Kayce's breath away a little.
He hadn't just been a soldier, he'd been a HIGHLY DECORATED SOLDIER. He'd received TEN DIFFERENT MEDALS for his service as a Navy SEAL, which hung in a frame within his home, a thin layer of dust having gathered on it once he found that looking at them was enough to prompt flashes in his mind of all that he'd done and been through in order to RECEIVE THEM...
And whoever this was, with the way that they moved and the skillset that was on display with their hand-to-hand combat, Kayce could help but wonder just how many medals SHE MIGHT HAVE. He wondered if she was SPEC OP LIKE HE WAS.
He wondered if, with the other threats eliminated, she might step up to take on that role against him.
For that reason, he didn't yet holster his pistol. He kept at his trigger discipline, he wasn't pointing the weapon AT THEM, but his expression steeled somewhat, his eyes narrowing slightly at the way her accent fluctuated. At her question, a small scoff huffed past his lips and he shook his head a little.
"Thank ya kindly for steppin' in," he started, "but anyone chargin' into a fight like this'n, throwin' around their TAE KWON DO like it's nothin', you ain't here for fuckin' sight-seein'." His voice never raised, his temper didn't flare. As of the moment, he was only guarded. "Land you're on right now is Ranch, I can tell ya that much. Belongs t' my father." His eyes darted briefly just past her in case there were MORE of their caliber with them.
"So, mind startin' with your NAME, ma'am?"

Anya wasn't trained like most soldiers were. Still trained to follow commands , exactly how they were said to her. But leaving a fight was never an option. Not until it was over. The very second she walked into that fight , she had decided that she wasn't leaving. Not until she , or those guys were laid out on the ground where they stood. & from the looks of things … They were the ones that were gonna end up on the ground.
Trained eyes watched them continue to close in on her , getting ready for the fight they were going to have to get through. They just had to stop. Something about trying to be better than she was raised pulling her to come & help this man. When her eyes looked behind the group closing in on her , mismatched eyes watched him reach for his gun , leaving her with the only job of keeping their attention on her until …
BANG BANG BANG!
The shots rang out loudly. Echoing in the pasture they stood in. That took care of three of them , they were as done as you could possibly be at that point. Next one down was the one that the blonde stranger had bashed in the head with the butt of his gun. The crack sounded , & another body hit the ground with a loud thud. Just like that … Anya knew the kind of man she was dealing with. Someone just like her. A soldier.
Once the fourth hit the ground , all that left was one. Closest to Anya. Eyes moved to him , catching the terrified look in his eyes & smirking with a bit of a scoff. He made a charge for her , but Anya was quicker.
She charged for him as he did for her. Only seconds passing before legs seemed to move as if physics didn't apply to her , training not seen in many parts of the world. Their legs wrapped securely around the man's neck , before bringing his body , & head , crashing down to the ground. Nothing more than a huff of a breath leaving them when the fighting was said & done.
A few seconds later , she chanced looking up at the man she had come in to save. He didn't seem to be freaked , rattled , or shaken in any way. Yeah , he was definitely a soldier of some kind. One that had seen his fair share of shit just like her. Reality kicked in , & she felt the nerves kicking in. There was being bad at talking , & then there was Anya. Looking down , she tucked some hair behind her ear , before looking back up at him.
❝I uh … S-Sorry for intruding.❞ There was a mix of accents. She did well to replicate the accent of Brooklyn , with just smallest hint of a Russian accent laced in there. ❝Hey , you happen t'know if I'm close t'the Yellowstone National Park?❞ She asked , almost blurting out the question. ❝It's uh…Kinda hard t'tell the difference between park & ranch out here.❞

Kayce was no stranger to COMBAT. And that was an UNDERSTATEMENT.
Everywhere from THE RANCH, ACROSS THE MIDDLE EAST, all the way across EUROPE. He had seen some of the worst that humanity had to offer, while also bearing witness to what their actions caused for the INNOCENTS in their path. He'd had no delusions about that trail of violence and bloodshed ending once he came back to the states...but somehow, getting his boots on the ground of the Ranch that he'd called home for eighteen years had held more DIRECT PERSONAL IMPACT than most of the time during his various tours as a Navy SEAL. Just since coming back to the YELLOWSTONE-DUTTON RANCH, he'd had to watch his brother die, he'd had to KILL Monica's brother, and after that it just felt like one battle after another. Only brief respite in-between incidents.
And now...Kayce found himself out in the middle of a pasture, having stopped over in order to deal with some trespassers. Trespassers that, as it so happened, were ARMED TO THE TEETH with blunt force weapons, blades, and likely at least a few guns, and they were all more than willing to put him down like a dog just for the sake of removing him as an IRRITANT. So really, as disturbing and tragic as it might have seemed...TODAY WAS JUST ANOTHER FUCKIN' DAY for Kayce Dutton.
He was outnumbered, and definitely OUTGUNNED. He didn't have an automatic weapon with him, not that he needed it to do some serious damage. He just needed an OPENING. Once he had that, the rest could fall into place. He had been in the midst of SCOPING OUT THAT OPENING, when he heard the sound of a tongue clicking.
His first thought was one of the other Ranch Hands, or maybe even his FATHER...but as soon as his gaze shot to the source of the sound, he was met with the sight of...a COMPLETE STRANGER. Immediately his mind wanted to register them as another ENEMY, but no more than a couple moments later, that theory was disproven. At the very least, this person wasn't his enemy IN THAT INSTANT.
He wasn't sure what he was expecting out of her next, though he at least knew that this person was RECKLESS, or maybe just NOBLE enough to step into an altercation on behalf of someone that they didn't even know. What he definitely HADN'T EXPECTED, was for the force of a single kick to be enough to LAY A FULL-GROWN MAN OUT ON THE GROUND.
The only time that he'd seen that sort of focused technique in combat...had been when he was surrounded by FELLOW SOLDIERS. It was incredible really, what could be assessed about a person by just the way that they moved. The way that they SPOKE. Even if she hadn't leveled someone right there in front of him, he would have been able to tell just by the GAIT that they walked with, but she had opted to give him a display of her courage AND prowess. And with a look at that KNIFE that they were sporting, and that EXPRESSION that she wore, she was also giving him an idea of how CONFIDENT they were of themselves.
What she had ALSO given him though...was that OPENING that he needed.
As soon as the attention was taken off of him, Kayce utilized that. His eyes scanned across the group of ENEMY COMBATANTS. Just like with every operation that he'd been on, it felt as though time was moving at a slowed pace. He was able to locate exactly three guns that were placed in S.O.B. holsters. In the same SPLIT SECOND that he watched the men reaching for those guns, his OWN PISTOL was drawn from his holster and he fired three rounds in quick succession before they could reach their weapons. Before all three of their bodies even hit the ground, he had moved up behind another of the men and took the butt of his pistol to the back of the bastard's head with a sickening CRACK signaling the cracked SKULL.
