The Earl looked at the man, the one Ragnar Lothbrok had insisted on taking as his only treasure, which made no sense to him. He was a Christian. He should be hanging like the others, but no not only did Ragnar take him as a slave, but he had him in the village with him now, and he raised his eyes, as he responded to him.

“Your existence is cause for me to kill you. Did you not see what was done to others like you? You’re a Christian, the only one left from the raid. I could very easily have you killed.”

Earl Haraldson was finding that anymore, that was the only identity he seemed to have. Sten had long gone away, and he’d become the Earl, so consumed with power, that sometimes, it was all he saw. He saw that his power was being threatened by Ragnar Lothbrok, at the moment and he needed allies. He knew his wife was not pleased at his choice for a husband for Thyri and he knew his daughter wasn’t either. Despite his hard shell, there were times his daughter could make him smile. But tonight, he had to maintain his choice.

“I believe I made myself clear. You will marry him and he will keep you safe. You may learn to grow to accept it, maybe even like it one day.”

Sten heard the words his wife was saying and there was so much that he wasn’t saying. There was so much he could say.  Their sons, their boys, they were dead. Were they in Valhalla? Had they fought the way that he had raised them to, even as young as they were? He’d not said a lot, since he had left to try to find them, since he had brought back word to his wife, that their boys were dead. He didn’t know what to do. He had been Earl for many years and as proud of a man that he was, he had felt like his heart stopped. They were supposed to look forward to the day they died, but they had been just boys.

But, he could see the pain in his wife’s eyes, despite how much he wanted to withdraw into himself. He had told her plenty for years, asked for her advice even, but he could not tell her everything, could not tell her how they had found them, but had only told her that he had been too late, that he had failed.

Her words made him pause for a moment and he sighed, going over to her.  He looked emotionless, while his eyes  held a deep pain, and a need for vengeance.

“I’ll stay. I have things to tend to, but I can stay. He had made sure that Thyri was safe, when he came in, and he moved closer to her still. “I am sorry that I couldn’t..that they’re gone.”  He couldn’t tell her all of it. He didn’t want her to feel as bad as he did right now. Something had broken in him, tonight.
