another, somewhat adjacent thing i noticed since writing that post is that theyre both very independent-minded and free-spirited. sasuke has a whole bird motif going on. wei wuxian literally loves to fly. but despite their free spirits, theyre both trapped by their stations in life. their agency over their bodies and lives is stolen from them. wei wuxian even loses his ability to fly, due to his "debts" and oath of fealty. the difference between them here is that wei wuxian's autonomy is ultimately restored to him, while sasuke continues to be trapped by guilt, debt, and servitude.

it's been really interesting to see how two different authors approach similar themes and politically charged narratives, and how their own beliefs and/or biases can seep through. and i, for one, definitely prefer mxtx's approach
