reminder that shes yui shes 10 and she cant freaking read ( more actual hc under cut )

yui's a pretty exceptional student at school. she's a dedicated worker, terrified of disappointing the teachers - since, in reality, yui struggles to learn things and retain them. in addition to undiagnosed 'tism, she has an untreated concussion and it causes her memory issues; her memory gets a bit worse during her time as a spirit and after revival. she can read a bit of japanese with difficulty and concentration, and she can't read any other languages at all.

yui could try to ask someone else for help learning, but... her parents never really had time to give her a hand, so she doesn't think anyone else will. so yui does her best not to let anyone else notice her illiteracy by piecing things together from context clues. ( she's alert and can read people to filth, but that's another post. ) because yui relies on context and visuals, it's common for her to misinterpret things that occur over asynchronous communication.

despite her struggles, she still maintains good grades since she works herself to the bone.

throughout the game, it's progressively referenced that yui saved haruhi. i've been mulling over this for a few days now and it's only Just after i was screenshotting for sprites again that i connected some dots.

haruhi enters the malice cave after mr. kotowari removes the entrance barricade. periodically, throughout the cave, the screen flashes monochrome and yui appears. notably, she does some actions that haru, at present, has to do to avoid malice minions, like throwing a pebble and hiding in the nearby bushes. at one area, monochrome yui stumbles and falls, remaining seated on the ground for a few seconds with a terrified expression. she had encountered malice minions.

not only that, but the flashback closest to the boss area shows yui hauling haruhi out of the area ahead. this brief scene is immediately followed by:

yui and haruhi had been in malice's lair before. and i must remark, isn't it odd that yui's father died suddenly? isn't it odd that kuro died on the day before the fireworks? it all lines up. haruhi tells yui she will be moving away. tragedy after tragedy strikes yui.

haruhi is moving away. she would be out of malice's grasp. so, what does the evil spirit do? well, he makes situations for haruhi as horrible as possible by hitting her where it REALLY hurts: making her best friend, someone near and dear to her, suffer excruciatingly.

my estimate: yui's father dies. she's devastated - he's the parent she was closest to between him and her mother. yui latches onto her dogs and haruhi for comfort. one day, malice sends his minion and kidnaps kuro. yui and haruhi pursue the spirit up the mountain to the cave. haru herself gets taken by a minion, leaving yui alone to progress further. yui narrowly survives the encounters with other minions, and makes her way to the heart of the cavern.

malice taunts her with kuro and haruhi in his grasp. he tells her she can only choose one. through stressful tears, yui chooses haruhi. there's no question when it comes to that, after all. malice follows through on his word and releases haruhi, although not without her getting battered from the fall. yui carries haruhi out of the cave and to safety. then she heads and retrieves kuro... and we know what happened the day after aka the beginning of the game.

all that suffering resulted in malice easily being able to manipulate yui afterwards, be she alive or dead. notably, during malice's boss fight, he uses the same firework explosion attack that corrupted spirit yui does during her fight. in fact, during yui's boss fight, when she turns to look more human, she's grasping the sides of her head as she calls out. to a degree, malice was straight up forcing her to attack haruhi.

and for the cherry on top, malice made certain that haruhi would have survivor's guilt over the entire thing simply via the fact that yui saved haruhi from malice, but haruhi couldn't save yui from malice.

just. GAH........... this game. these girls. even in my yui-is-revived main verse, the guilt still festers and lingers and in a way it's worse because yui came back different. the changes are noticeable. her spirit is corroded, she doesn't smile as often, she's more subdued... the effects of malice are still prominent. and to haruhi, she would likely see it as her mistake for not being able to save yui. malice is such an awful and cunning villain who's getting what he wants either way, even if he's still recovering from the blows of the final boss fight.

⭐️ - White Lily & Yui: yui thinks white lily is smart and pretty. she would love to sit down and learn stuff from white lily, even if it's things from the cookie world that she may not understand.

when yui gets near the top of her Emotion threshold or when shes feeling smth strongly she starts exhaling black smoke-mist-stuff. primarily because malice does this (hand+eye body horror and gore cw for the link) and shes kinda got her soul in a custody battle involving malice. regardless the smoke doesn't do much in small amounts but if someone breathes enough of it in, they'll start getting their Bad And Traumatic Memories pulled to mind easier

glimpses of the past. = accepting. / send BLINDSIDED for a scene from my muse's past in which they were betrayed or shocked by what someone did. optional vibes music = ♪

♪ haru's leaving. yui remembers very specifically how she'd broken the news. gentle as haru always is, she's a very straightforward person. we won't be able to see each other for a bit. for how long? um... see, my parents want to move to... america.

the thought felt like a kick in the gut then, and it feels like a knife through her ribs now. but why now? she's in the middle of a clearing, trying to internally kick herself into going further up the mountain. yui digs her fingers into the dirt and grits her teeth. she tries to push herself off the ground; if she's a stupid ghost, why is it so hard?

why is everything so hard? why is everything so hard? haru left me. she... hasn't left yet. i saw her.

yui rises to her feet, brushing off her skirt. her brain feels foggy. she has to keep going... why do i have to go there again? i don't... remember... yui scratches the back of her head. where am i going? where is haru going? haru... she's going to be gone. and i'm already dead. what am i supposed to do?

a feeling of defeat hits her in the knees. she sits down, staring at the dirt. noise wafts through the trees from further down the mountain. was that... metal? it doesn't matter. it doesn't matter... nothing matters anymore...

it's harder to think. something wells up in yui's chest. she wants to cry. nothing matters anymore. everything she loves has gone or is going away. maybe it's better that she's dead... why doesn't it hurt less? shouldn't it hurt less if she's dead? being a stupid ghost doesn't change anything. you're an idiot, yui. you're the reason haru has to leave. but what if she didn't have to leave? what if i could... stay with her forever. what if she could stay with me forever? if being a ghost doesn't change anything... maybe she would want to - it's a horrible train of thought, but she(?) can't help it. she's so lonely. SHE'S SO LONELY!

someone's called out her name. yui looks up slightly, enough to see the feet and legs. haru. it's haru. haru is here. haru said something. words dribble out of yui's mouth like blood. "haru... you looked for me...""yui!" "i was so lonely...""i was too, yui!"

"haru... haru, haru... haru, haru, i'm so LONELY, haru!" the bleeding is quicker now, more frantic. "haru, please, please, i'm so LONELY..."

soft footsteps on dirt. yui's head lifts a little, wide red eye peering through her bangs. haru's walking away. HARU'S LEAVING ME. yui's hand clenches into a fist, tugging up grass. betrayal rises in her chest. how could she? haru's leaving. yui remembers very specifically how she'd broken the news. gentle as haru always is, she's a very straightforward person. haru's leaving. yui remembers very specifically how she'd broken the news. haru's leaving. yui remembers very specifically haru's leaving. yui remembers haru's leaving yui

"you said we'd always be friends! we'd always be together, right?" the feeling in her chest reaches a boiling point. haru's leaving. anger seeps out in yui's words. hurt laces her desperate, frantic pleas. "we promised, right?"

♪ something pulls at her head, leg, and arm. she lets it twist and corrode her. i'll keep you with me, haru, no matter what. she won't have to leave! yui screeches, a bloodcurdling noise. ( something else is pulling her not-body around, but she can't bring herself to care. ) "ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!"

haru, to her credit, did not scream. yui is yanked this way and that, blurry vision keeping focus on that blue bow at all times. something drags her arm up, causing the ground to detonate. it's uncomfortable. again. again. again. yui struggles. haru doesn't have to leave if she comes with me. yui pauses. something causes her to move right next to haru. her head splits and she tries to bite down on the blue bow. spectral teeth meet thin air. anger bubbles inside her sternum. she's dragged away. more fireworks from the ground, trying to turn the blue bow red. again. again.

something's wrong. yui struggles. she inhales, forcing herself to stop; she feels the icky tendrils and anger coil inside her. she can feel her hair again. she tugs at her hair, barely able to keep herself in place. the soil crunches under footsteps. a gentle touch. a gentle voice.

yui screams. she screams about how haru said they'd always be friends. it's not what she wants to scream about. the anger bubbles and boils and explodes; the icky feeling wraps around her, protruding from her two limbs and head. she's yanked this way and that. the fireworks explode in a blaze of black and red.

her throat feels tight. the blue bow moves to and fro frantically. yui's mismatched, giant eyes lock onto it. she's placed right next to it. she bites. nothing is absorbed into her split maw. she's upset. why won't she make this easy? i just want to be with her forever! why won't haru listen? yui screeches, pounding her arm on the ground. more fireworks manifest and circle outward. the blue bow moves. a narrow miss. another narrow miss. haru can't keep this up forever, can she?

something's wrong. yui doesn't like this. she struggles. another attempt to bite; another set of explosions. they all miss the blue bow! every single one of them! wrath floods yui's form. she trembles in place, then is set in front of the blue bow. spectral fangs nip at air inches away from the blue bow. SHE ISN'T DYING! SHE KEEPS FIGHTING!

yui doesn't like this. she struggles again, punching herself in the gut. she takes a deep breath, all of the bad feelings and things receding inside her as if she can inhale them. they struggle to get out. once again, footsteps on soil and a gentle voice. yui tries to reply but a wail rips itself out from her throat instead. i'm so lonely... come to me...

she can't keep the bad feelings in. they explode out again, snaking around her and twisting her. she's forcefully dragged close to haru, but her bite this time is frantic and snappish at anything in the area. she doesn't want to do this! i want her to stay forever! i don't want to hurt her!

yui pulls away from where something wants her to go, lingering on the outskirts of the clearing. it grabs her arm, creating more fireworks. haru is dodging them. haru is weaving this way and that, a tight grip on her flashlight. something pulls her strings, and she's back in the center of the area. more explosions. more attempts to take her best friend's head off. yui struggles. something forces her to keep attacking. haru dodges.

I HATE HER!

yui startles. that isn't... that isn't her head. she's upset, she's hurt, she's angry, but she could never hate haru. yui thrashes. yui stops in place and tears at her head. she metaphorically grabs every single bad thing and shoves it inside of her. the ichor recedes. she internally beats it up, and it fights back. she can feel her hair again. she tugs it, she grits her teeth, she falls to her knees and starts to claw the ground. she hisses.

hesitant footsteps on soil. a gentle voice again. a gentle touch.

"haru, haru, haru!" she cries in agony; she fights to speak. yui breathlessly gasps for air. "haru, i... haru..."

a deep, breathless inhale. her fists are shaking. she has to go to the mountain. she has to fight this thing by herself. it's all her fault. even if she gets killed again... it's the least she can do to try.

"haru, please take care of chaco..." she quietly pleads, pain still entwined in her voice. please take care of my dog. please go home. please stop chasing after me. you're gonna get even more hurt. let me get beat up in your place... "goodbye."

verdigris = you will do everything and anything to not think about the past days. how many you're trying to forget, it doesn't matter, but you will do anything, everything, all the things you can in order to not have to focus on the fact that you made a mistake. the world is full of life and vibrancy, and you don't want to be that dark spot in it that you believe yourself to be. so you fight it with everything you've got, pushing away people in fear of them making you darker, fighting those who oppress you without questioning their motives. fearful. regretful. uncertain. you dance to a tune only you hear in this world, and you know it's going to kill you one day. you hope it's soon.

// yui loves noise. she loves clamor and excessive action and parties and the like. she grew up in a household that slightly adhered an out of sight, out of mind, stay quiet attitude to her; mostly out of necessity. therefore, when she gets any chance to be loud and rowdy, she loves it. she will put herself in situations that she knows she may not be able to handle because she wants to derive joy from overstimulation.

yui also tends to be loud, chaotic, and the like particularly when she wants attention. getting into/making trouble, making noise, and causing a ruckus are some of the few (if not only) ways she knows of getting attention. it's so habitual for her that she doesn't always realize when she's doing it.
