so. a morrigan thought that bothers me a lot actually.

As much as people don't seem to like it, Morrigan's story is tied with Mythal. Mythal is as much Flemeth as Flemeth is her, and as such had just as much of a hand in both raising and abusing Morrigan throughout her life and the conflict as part of the narrative means her being present makes sense.

The problem isn't that she's present. It's specifically the fact that the current people writing her both fundamentally misunderstood her character and wanted Mythal's character softened so they didn't have to actually engage with all the abuse she inflicted on others, even beyond Morrigan and Solas. The problem is they cared so little beyond the immediate plotline they wanted her for that they took a character whose arc was about breaking cycles of abuse and finding personal freedom beyond what was planned for you and not only stuck her back in that role, but made her sorry for 'misunderstanding' her abuser

and that's really kind of emblematic of the current writing ethos

No matter how much he tries to feel at ease, Caleb will never shake the feeling of being out of place in this comfortable home on the streets of Rexxentrum. His cottage is a quaint and charming place, evoking memories both fond and painful of his childhood home. His friends have put in a great deal of effort to create a warm and inviting atmosphere within its walls. Colorful artwork from Jester adorns the walls, vibrant and playful. Yasha's thoughtful touch can be seen in the fresh array of flowers. The aroma of Caduceus' teas tucked away in his cabinet. Little notes from Essek, scattered about his office.

And upon his counter, a sending stone. Though it currently serves no purpose, with its other half resting idly in the possession of someone currently lounging in his kitchen. Caleb's culinary skills leave much to be desired, a fact he has quickly learned since moving out on his own. The proof of this in the lackluster stew he passes across the table to Beauregard, catching the way she looks at it. He has never claimed to be a good cook—a young Bren never learned how, and Caleb never needed to learn.

“We should discuss what we are going to do now, Beauregard.” Months have passed since Ikithon's trial, and both he and Beauregard are aware this would never end with Trent alone.

Cheerleaders in Derry

This is going to be a long post where I go on about uniform design for a needlessly loooong time, so here is a complimentary spacer <3

Me waiting for Welcome to Derry to see if they have any cheerleader characters so I can draw inspiration from the uniform. Above the spacer has the one from Chapter 2, but uniforms change throughout the years so neither of them would be 1:1 how Marilyn's looks. So I'm glad I get SOME creative liberty. But I know Welcome to Derry will likely have something given this is in their set production:

I'll probably keep the simple DHS logo for whatever uniform I end up with her. The mascot shows that the primary team IS baseball ( to the surprise of no one who knows the novel haha. )

Cheerleading isn't as common for baseball; but it's not unheard of. So let me sip that delulu juice some more. With the girls field hockey team also, you can't tell me there aren't more sporting events at DHS. Cheerleaders simply make sense lol.

red polos for the girl's field hockey team, and me wishing I could see the costume design up close for the emblem but oh well! (I'm not going to comment on the skirt, I hate it despite being a plaid skirt girly.)

I feel like it's safe to say Red is going to be the primary colour of the uniform. Gold will likely be present as well, I don't THINK the uniforms in ch.2 are for Derry High so the Red/Black scheme likely wouldn't be as accurate but who knows. Red/Black and Red/White are both really easy to work with and can absolutely be changed up.

Here are some inspirations I plan to pull from!

the varsity jacket is simple enough, probably with the DHS emblem somewhere on the chest. Not given to the cheerleaders; but likely given TO them by whichever guy happens to fancy them lol.

I also like the idea of sleeveless for hot weather, but the simple white sleeves for cooler days!

thinking about the magi origin and honestly how the mage warden, amell or surana, got a head start in a way by having much more benevolent exposure to both spirits and demons both during their harrowing. Aside from the rage demon, every spirit either has you honestly earn something or they teach you something. ironically no one was realer in the mage origin than Mouse the Pride Demon

So, as you may know from his muse page, Rory has ( obviously undiagnosed ) ADHD. I wanted to delve more into this ( and project some of my ADHD onto him lmaooo ).

so, we'll start heavier and then move on to the mostly lighter stuff: yes, his ADHD is disabling. no, he does not know that. yes, he's thinks he's just lazy and stupid ( he's not </3 ).

no, his would-be-shitty-no-matter-what parents do not help the above, although his mom's emotional abuse / judgment actually gives him the bigger complex abt it

he does struggle academically despite the fact that, talking to him about his interests / stuff he's knowledgeable about, he clearly comes across intelligent. he struggles with focus, some memory issues, plus general test anxiety despite claiming to not care about school. he hears a lot of "try harder" despite, like, actually putting effort in for many years of his schooling.

he graduates high school, barely ( as in, highly considered dropping out for 101 reason, including the ADHD ). no, he doesn't even consider college.

the combination of untreated ADHD, C-PTSD, and definitely an ( un ) healthy dose of depression make it hard for him to work "traditional jobs," so he does mostly odd jobs. at some point after getting his own place, i def think he starts diving into his art a little more. can aspen write a muse who isn't a creative? tune in next time to find out.

unrelated, but i am serious about the band idea. about him joining some local, semi-decent band as a singer.

ANYWAY some lighter stuff now: guy who always has one major ( months and months long ) and one minor ( 1-2 weeks ) hyperfixation going on at all times.

his common types of hyperfixations tend to be: specific comic book series or characters, specific bands, D&D, video games, and so forth.

he does get pulled back to previous hyperfixations sometimes, especially favorite characters ( like batg.irl, green ar.row, nightc.rawler, spid.er-man, etc )

please let him infodump at you. please let your muse find it endearing when he talks for 30 minutes straight about the latest Batm.an series. or about his new spray paint. or about anything.

btw i'm adding this just to be petty because i brought up comics but i promise you he called in and voted for jason not to die. i think older rory read "Under the H.ood" and felt the most validation he'd ever felt in his life. this isn't even fn.af-related anymore, let me get mad about D.C for a second—

( actually let's be real rory relating to jason big time is Real and Canon to me. anyway hayla, if you're reading this—)

sometimes his brain moves faster than his mouth and he literally can't say what he wants to say fast enough to get it out coherently ( real real real ).

he does miss social cues sometimes, but how much of that is ADHD vs him just not being properly socialized prior to school is debatable. pre-bite, he's able to laugh it off when someone calls him on it.

projecting big time but i think he should be a rocker ( as a stim ). if he's sitting down, he's probably rocking or bouncing his leg or something. if he's standing, he's shifting foot-to-foot constantly. that's not to say he can never be still, but he stims quite a lot. it's not always ( or even often ) a sign of nerves, he just gets restless.

in fact, honestly a lot of his idle behavior can scream "nervous" if you don't realize he's simply restless.

his recklessness is honestly not something i'd attribute to his ADHD. he has little care for his own safety, but i think that's a lot broader then ( or even wholly unrelated to ) his ADHD

does he ever get diagnosed? it's probably well into his 30s before he can even be convinced to try therapy, but yeah, i think eventually he gets diagnosed and tbh i think he probably cried the first time he read the, like, symptoms of it and realized it fit him. also when he gets on medication. this is supposed to be a happy bullet point but AGH </3

do you have any unpopular opinions about caleb?

to clarify: no one in the rpc is guilty of what i am about to explain, more of the general c/ritical r/ole fandom as a whole!

i wouldn't say this is an unpopular opinion necessarily as much as i do find it a bit frustrating that the c/ritical r/ole fandom as a whole sometimes tends to overlook or ignore what a bad person early campaign caleb really was. they sort of just simplify him to sad quirky boy who likes cats and by the end, he's less sad quirky boy who likes cats.

a bit of caleb meta under the cut because i am obsessed with him.

this is not exclusive to the critical role fandom of course, but fandom, in general, can sometimes ignore a character arc starting from a less-than-ideal place if they have deemed that particular character as a favorite boy who can do no wrong. this absolutely happens in discussions surrounding caleb and his character arc because he ends up in such a positive (or positive for him) place by the end of the campaign. it's very easy to ignore the low if you can choose instead to focus on the high.

as a writer, this is something i feel very passionate about not doing. caleb is such an interesting character to me because of where he came from and the growth he overcomes throughout his character arc. is caleb as bad as trent? absolutely not, but he was still a pretty shitty person and extremely single-minded in his pursuits. even if his motivations were noble (saving his parents from himself) i think we have seen from a lot of popular media that even the best of villains start from noble pursuits. not saying caleb is a villain, not at all, but you get my point. he was clearly struggling with his worst instincts and it's his friends that caused him to start looking inwards.

i've been watching a lot of old liam interviews where he talks about early campaign caleb and this one stood out to me as the most direct example of the demons caleb was fighting with every day and how he sometimes allowed them to win. when asked why caleb chose to do the blood pact with fjord, this is what he said.

“…he saw fjord become tempted by power and in that moment, he’s very much like trent, the man who molded him, saw a split second in time where he [fjord] had hunger in his eyes and thought that it could be molded or bent for caleb’s use. and thought, I could take a risk here….and use him and pull a favor out of this.” 

this is very crappy and manipulative behavior towards a friend! liam then follows it up by expressing how guilty caleb felt over it due to his increasing care of the nein.

"caleb was disgusted with himself at that moment...i think that he was a product of his schooling in that moment. and part of him was like 'yes' but most of him went you fucking piece of filth. look at you."

was caleb, as a child, a victim of abuse grooming? absolutely. did this mold caleb into someone not super great? also yes. both things can be true and it doesn't minimize the abuse that caleb suffered. he's a product of his environment and that's what makes his growth so powerful. love saves people. he is genuinely changed by the friends in his life who chose to look past his mistakes and the man that trent molded him into and instead saw him for the person he could choose to be now. caleb is extremely kind and painstakingly earnest. he just needed the right people in his life to allow that to come out again. to allow the softness.

when caleb is talking to essek in the infamous forehead kiss scene, he is not talking just talking about the mistakes he made as a young teenager in killing his family, but he is also referring to the person he was when he met the nein. that is the fool in caleb's mind. not a manipulated child bren. he sees a lot of himself in essek because i think he sees how easily he could have become essek if not for the nein. and also why essek's redemption is so meaningful to him. if essek can do it, maybe he can too.

trauma doesn't define either of them.

i feel so passionate about this because i think caleb's character arc is genuinely one of the most powerful explorations of trauma and healing i've ever seen in a fictional property and overlooking the person he was at the beginning is a disservice to how far he comes by the end. the genuinely good person he grows into becoming.

lives up to his namesake, cannoli, for his crunchy exterior and soft, cheesy interior. loves petting animals, eating sweets, and writing love poetry. if you ever ask him about any of these things, he'll bite your head off ( figuratively. most of the time ).

is able to turn into a fell dragon, but is much smaller than rafal's form. its primary colors are black and yellow.

fated to die like his fathers: protecting the country and people he loves without ever being recorded in the history books for it. his bones will be found in solm, one clawed hand reaching towards each of his fathers' graves.
