was rewatching a couple cutscenes to figure out some character sheet stuff and just,,,,,,,, the way dan heng always so casually touches and protects march, when she is literally THE team shielder,,, oof. my heart

steps between tb march and arlan(who is injured) to use his spear to deflect an attack and ends up having a bit of the energy he deflects damage his bracer,,,,,holds his hand out to grab march's arm so she doesn't fall over after the tb's stellaron blast in the doomsday beast fight aftermath - putting his hand on march's head to push her down and out of the way of danger while tb spins to smack the absolute SHIT out of a poor silvermane guard when they need to make a break for it and escape in belobog,, KEEPS his arm on her while he spins them both around so HES in the direct line of fire between march and the other guards that he then attacks with a single handed spear sweep--

and i forgot the specific scene but HE DOES THE SAME SHIT OF STEPPING IN TO DEFLECT A PROJECTIAL MAGICAL ATTACK WITH HIS SPEAR A SECOND TIME IM(at least i think so because i recall a different animation than that one i just seen but i ccould be wrong and just massive cope)

he is like CONSTANTLY putting himself between his companions and any foe/danger he values their lives WAY more than his own wants to keep them safe at all costs

dan heng is color blind due to the effects of the forced molting being cut short/tampered with and being a vidyadhara turned human ( IL form however is not )

so like- we know how dan feng was sentenced to a forced molting, yeah? and how it seems vidyadhara lose their memories of the life they just lived during it ( as seen with the one side quest/character that falls in love with the same woman every rebirth but has no recollection of having been in love with her/her lover several life times )

and dan feng's punishment was cut short/tampered with, to where we see dan heng is visibly younger than what dan feng looks like ( ie. ichor of two dragons short, official art, dan feng with a deeper voice ) but not completed to where he is back to an egg or extremely small/young child ( example: todd when trying to uncover the secrets of how the vidyadhara biologically work, ends up turning himself into a toddler and slowly loses his memories of what he was doing )

dan heng's memories are very faded and hard to put together, especially in any sort of order of sequence, but he DOES still have memories or visions of dan feng's life ( especially when sleeping BUT!!!! dan heng also seems to have lost a lot of, if not all, his vidyadhara traits ( horns, ears, tail*, etc. ) until they resurface/are unlocked when his life is in danger upon blade impaling him with a sword- his memories become a bit clearer as time passes ( and with aid from jingliu and likely jing yuan providing answers for him about dan feng's life and how he ruled as the high elder )

so the forced molting, not having been completed "safely"/all the way/been tampered with, ends up messing up dan heng physically- losing his vidyadhara features and senses.. resulting in him having several functions of his now human body not working properly.

in this case- he has little to no hearing capabilities, thus resulting in him needing a hearing aid ( likely provided by herta space station/himeko )

he learns sign language while the device is being created for him, since it takes a while to adjust to what works for him ( and is originally made for a pure blood human, but his vidyadhara traits are there just under the surface, yet not visible )

once he obtains the imibitor lunae form, he does not need the hearing aid while in that form ( as his internal functions are back and working properly now that he has returned to being a vidyadhara ). but when back to just good old plain dan heng, he still needs it
