goldie and lying is ... a strange combo, to say the least. under most normal circumstances, he's an awful liar - so much so to the point that it's kind of comedic how bad he is at it. the only times he's ever able to get away with being remotely deceptive is for extremely harmless pranks - such as making a ton of paper cranes and hiding them around mustang's office for him to keep finding and get increasingly concerned about the volume of in the trashcan - or for moments where he's able to "omit" things while still being truthful. he's not a good liar. he's always sucked at it. he doesn't like lying. but when it comes to lying to himself, he's a mastermind.

however intentionally or unintentionally it was, goldie really, really likes lying to himself about things. in fact, he's so good at it that he completely BELIEVES every lie he makes up about himself - and while this would normally be a point of sinful behavior, maybe some kind of vanity, it's actually mostly just ... extreme self-deprecation. in listening to his own dangerous thoughts for so long while his phantom twin would punish him for even acting in a way that could be remotely "sinful," he started to genuinely believe his own thoughts that he's a horrible person and that his very existence was a problem. this is of course very loosely summarizing it ; a good chunk of goldie's experience with lying is him using up all his deception on himself and resulting in an awful mental state that has persisted since the age of six. he's really not well when it comes to his sense of deception. at least he's somewhat able to tell when he's being lied to, though. autism vibes.
