ALRIGHT YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS: let's talk about mk and macaque!

mk's relationship with macaque is,,, complicated. especially earlier on. in the beginning, mk did look up to macaque - before he knew that macaque was using him to take his power and defeat swk. he did wonder about macaque after that encounter briefly, but ultimately put the mystic monkey out of his mind - there was too much else going on for him to stay focused on him for too long. his opinion on macaque changed a few times - with the insistence that mk was his student and mk actually learning something from him with every encounter, despite the way that macaque taught ( ahaha trauma ). once he actually helped mk with regaining some of his power ( never mind the fact that mk didn't pick up on the fact that macaque was indeed helping in the winning side ) , mk knew there was something up and ultimately wanted to see if he could get through him somehow! mk believes in macaque, that he can be better, even if he doesn't actually KNOW what happened between him and monkey king. he trusts macaque and knows that the monkey has changed from when they first met, and even though that trust may not be 100%, it's enough that mk can accept that macaque is another mentor to him! and also a little bit of a therapist, but don't tell mk that.

just some rambles abt mk's relationships and how far he's willing to go for people he loves - but mostly xing/mk ( tw: mentions of death! )

so like this stems from @fatedefyd and i plotting a death for xingyin and mk just... he does not handle this well at all. literally he will break into the underworld to bring her back and in the midst of this, he's going to pull a wukong and cross his name, xingyin's and all of his friends out of the book of death without a second thought. now, he doesn't TALK to anybody about this before he does it, so he doesn't know what the consequences of this action is going to be. ( but honestly? even if he DID have an idea of the consequences... he'd still do it. )

literally all he's thinking about is bringing xingyin back because the idea of living without her is literally impossible to mk because she means so god damn much to him. and if i'm being totally honest here - this is something he'd do for pretty much any partner he has. because he loves so much and so hard, if he's not called on it, it can become unhealthy.

not necessarily in the way that he'll become manipulative and possessive ( he just wants his partner to be happy, whether they're together or not ) - but if left unchecked, mk will make his s/o his entire life. thankfully!!! he's surrounded by people who aren't going to let him get away with that kinda behavior, so most the time it's alright, he can be normal. as normal as mk can be, obviously.

AIGHT, it's time to talk abt mk and what he thinks about wukong!

we already know mk is the monkey king's BIGGEST fan. the stories were always so cool and badass - how could he not stan?? top that off with getting to actually meet the legend he looked up to and learn from him, he was terrified and ecstatic. sure there have been times when monkey king has gotten on mk's last nerve, but he has an unwavering trust in him, even with the mistakes he's made, and learning more about who he was before he met tripitaka. i think it'll take A LOT for mk to ever turn against him. mk hella looks up to monkey king and truly cares about him - spending time with him is pretty fun too even when they're not training, he genuinely enjoys monkey king's company. all of that being said, he doesn't want to be monkey king. he's his own guy. facing off against demons that his mentor had originally come across is kinda stressful for him! but he deals with it, and doesn't really hold any resentment toward wukong for it; he just does what he can and hopefully it's enough. while he didn't really ask for all of this, he does it because he has to - and because he wants to keep the people he cares about safe. plus it's really neat when monkey king is proud of him :))))

thinking abt mk in the eye for an eye au and just -- how little he will trust anyone following what macaque did to him like..... thinks abt the spider queen special. he's going to be SO MUCH MORE HESITANT about trusting red son. even if mk still worked w him and pif to free dbk from lady bone demon's possession, that was just a temporary truce; mk isn't going to carry that over because to him that was just a one time thing. it was in their best interests to work together. but after trusting macaque as much as he did and seeing how that turned out, he's just .... unwilling to trust. he doesn't want to end up in another situation like that.

gonna just go ahead and make it an official headcanon for mk's miraculous verse, but if he's not in school / working / hanging out w his new friends, mk is ALWAYS!!!! texting, facetiming or talking on the phone with mei - yes, it's a six hour time difference from paris to xi'an, no neither one of them care; gotta have time for the bestie!

while i'm on a roll thinking about things, i wanna kinda talk more abt eye for an eye bc like !!! yes this is an absolutely horrible thing that happened to mk and he has so much trauma from it,, it takes him a HOT MINUTE to even start to be able to move on from it BUT when he does, homeboy really will be out here still radiating positivity in front of everyone. yeah it'll be way more performative, but just like mk in canon, he doesn't want to worry the people he cares about even more. he'll work three times as hard on his training - especially since he'll have the disadvantage of being blind in one eye, but it's going to make him that much better at what he does. he doesn't want to have a pity party for himself forever and he doesn't want his partial blindness to stay a disadvantage. he has to move forward and that's exactly what he's going to do (even if the very next time he sees macaque after The Incident he's gonna be literally frozen w fear, but that's an entirely different story) basically, mk is always going to be the optimist, even if there are lasting scars from what happened like his inability to trust new people ever

since ruby made a post abt it!! mk is totally taken off guard by xingyin all the time like --- he didn't expect to like her as much as he does! from time to time he does struggle with how much he cares about her, but he kinda ignores that much like he ignores all of his problems

despite all of that though, he just wants xing to know how much he loves her! so he does his very best to show her that she is so worthy of being loved and that he's the guy for the job, even if sometimes he feels like he's not good enough.
