modern family is all fun and games until you get to the scenes where you burst into tears because the once-vaguely homophobic dad now refers to his son's husband as family, and also the academically gifted daughter realizes that her dorky, clumsy dad was always really proud of her and just never surprised because he just assumed she could do anything, and also the eldest daughter who eloped comes crawling back to her parents' room and whispers that she still wants her parents to be present for her wedding, and also the anxious queer lawyer character admits that he was terrified that his husband would just leave him alone with their baby daughter, and also that the once-vaguely grouchy dad looks at his stepson and tells him that what makes a family is who sticks around, not who you're blood-related to and anyways what was i saying

Who is Suburban Legends about?

who knows! probably harry— she doesn’t often go back to talk about muses that haven’t been in her life for years. if we’re taking the highschool elements literally though, possibly our song drew (one of her first loves) or should’ve said no sam (seemed to be her first big on and off again relationship). but i think the high school elements function as a light homage to 1980s teen movies and a way to make the very specific pressure of dating in front of the entire world feel more relatable. it could also be a reflection on the pattern more than about a specific guy, or she also said that while writing 1989, she would sometimes watch movies and pause on a specific scene and to write about the character’s emotions, so that’s also in the running. i don’t think there’s a real tell in any one direction (ha)

i love this song!! it's on her playlist (not the official one, the one just for myself). electra heart in general is such a claire album. i'm going to hijack the ask because i've always wanted to talk a bit about this. i'm restricting myself to a screenshot for each song omg

bubblegum bitch // primadonna // homewrecker

bubblegum bitch is basically claire's character: this is just a person being idealised and idealising herself so she can be loved. "welcome to the life of electra heart"? sure, psychosexual complex princess. the chorus to primadonna doesn't need any commentary from me, i think. homewrecker is a particular poignant song for her too. "the good are never easy, the easy never good"? "but deep down all you want is love, the pure kind [...] but we cannot escape the past, so you and i will never last" and claire will never get into a healthy relationship until she fixes her heart.

starring role // the state of dreaming // power and control

i love how the entire album is framed around archetypes, and playing roles, and losing yourself along the way. when she says "all i really want is to be wonderful" and "people in this town they, they can be so cruel" in the state of dreaming. or "a human vulnerability [love] doesn't mean that i am weak" and "'cause all my life i've been controlled [...] you can't get peace without a war" in power and control. lady who's had a director her entire life. lady whose choices have never been entirely hers.

teen idle // valley of the dolls // how to be a heartbreaker

"i wanna be a bottle blonde, i don't know why but i feel conned" relating to an aesthetic (marilyn-esque figure) but also about being 'bottled' in expectations. valley of the dolls + the additional context of the film it was inspired by, with sharon tate fits claire's theme of always feeling unfulilled with her career. hypocrates fits here too (i love the first verse; "you're the lonely, one and only" is so great. destroy that man, claire). how to be a heartbreaker and seeing love as a game... yeah.

lonely hearts club // E.V.O.L.

skipping sex yeah since you've pointed it out already. i'm so glad she put E.V.O.L. on streaming platforms lol i've had it downloaded on my phone since 2012... "oh, baby, darling, how i long to become your suicide blonde; to lie besides my romeo, oh, what a wicked way to go" and "well, you're the best i've ever seen, and i'm your dying beauty queen"... i don't even know where to start with these. love as a tragedy, and love as death, and death as love, and tragedy as devotion is very claire.
