Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone look back and say goodbye (for now) to Shade, the Changing Woman
Tumblr media
Ernie Estrella:
Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone's recent take from Young Animal on Steve Ditko's Shade came to a splendid and rewarding ending. Readers who have been along for the ride since the first issue of Shade, the Changing Girl can now read the sixth and final issue of the Shade, the Changing Woman. Issue #6 is very much an ending, but it does leave a bit of hope for what may come next.
Starting with the Milk Wars crossover event, which had Shade interacting with a lactating Wonder Woman, fans have seen their protagonist Loma grow from a girl to a woman, one who literally ripped her heart out and confronted her role model, Rac Shade. And as with anything under DC's Young Animal imprint, things got a little trippy.
Shade, the Changing Woman #6 is a poetic, punch-driven ending, written by Castellucci, who's been joined by an art team of Zarcone, colorist Kelly Fitzpatrick, inker Ande Parks, letterer Saida Temofonte, and cover artist Becky Cloonan.
SYFY WIRE caught up with Castellucci and Zarcone right before the final issue came out on August 1 to reflect on the past six months, which seemed to breeze by for the pair ahead of the series landing its glorious finale.
How has the ride been these past two years, working together for the first time and eventually becoming inseparable?
Cecil Castellucci: The one lovely and rare thing is that when you have a collaboration like what me and Marley had, I think you can really lay your heart down on the line and lay your guest truths. [I] have total trust that she's going to understand what I'm going for and that I'm going to understand what she's doing. It's an enhancement all around. Wne know that at some point we want to bring the band back together and do something. We've talked about some ideas we wanted to pursue.
Marley Zarcone: We've been saying that when we met, it felt like I just met my old best friend. We synced up immediately. It's some witchery, but [former Young Animal editor] Shelly [Bond] knew when she hired us that we would be great friends.
It helps, definitely because people have an idea that one writer writes the same way no matter the artist. That's not true. Even Alan Moore talks about how it changed from David Gibbons and evolved depending on who he was working with. I feel like we have a very unique writer-artist relationship.

Where do you think readers are going to come away from the final issue?

i thought shade the changing girl had gotten canceled or whatever its called when a comic does that but turns out its still going its just shade the changing woman now!
which is good! but i dont know who’s out there making decisions like that about changing the name such that i literally couldnt find the next one since im not plugged into the comics world. like i just saw exactly one (1) episode of the wednesday club on gns and taliesins interpretation of loma got me right where i live so i had to check it out
side note Mollymauk Tealeaf is definitely a different take on some of the stuff Taliesin talks about w/r/t Loma Shade. This is also why i’m expecting to really love Molly whenever we get more dirt on him (pun.... intended??? grave humor of the literal variety?) bc already his take on ‘this is molly now whoever lucien was has no bearing on me’ is really good and i cant wait to see him interact with luciens past despite all that and see how he reconciles that.

Wooden lattices screen concrete hotel by PPAA in Mexico City
Mexican practice PPAA has designed Casa Octavia, a boutique hotel in Mexico City that is based around the eponymous fashion brand.
A facade of slim wooden lattices covers the hotel's concrete and glass exterior, shading the interiors from harsh sunlight and creating a delicate pattern of shadows.
Wooden lattices shade the hotel's exterior
The hotel and its minimalist interiors are designed to be an extension of the clothes offered by Octavia.
"After a long conversation about what Octavia is, we came to the conclusion that a clothing brand nowadays is not only about the product they sell, but more about a lifestyle and a way to live," studio founder Pablo Pérez Palacios told Dezeen.
"So, we transported the clothing brand's values into a 3D space", he said.
The hotel is designed in the style of the Octavia fashion brand
The hotel is in La Condesa, renowned as one of the most pedestrian-friendly parts of Mexico City.
PPAA took the nature of the hotel's location into careful consideration. The wooden screen is designed to mediate this relationship, offering passersby a glimpse into its interior space while maintaining a sense of privacy for guests.
A side patio connects Casa Octavia's ground floor to the street outside
La Condesa is also known for its neighbourly atmosphere, and Casa Octavia seeks to honour this tradition by promoting interactions between the neighbourhood and the hotel.
"The scale of the project is very similar to the surrounding buildings," explained Palacios. "We believe it merges very well into the urban fabric".
The courtyard is open to the sky
The hotel's ground floor is a flexible open space that can be used for various community schemes.
"When open, the ground floor becomes an extension of the sidewalk, giving a pedestrian feeling," said Palacios.
"It could also become a more private space for events when closed. It's a mixed typology, and that is exactly what gives La Condesa its vibrant atmosphere."
Sprawling plants adorn the guest rooms' balconies
A courtyard on one side runs across the full length of the hotel, linking to Casa Octavia's entrance.
Guest rooms are arranged in two blocks on the hotel's upper levels. One block is at the back of the hotel, with balconies that overlook the courtyard. The other set of rooms face the bustling street.
The hotel's ground floor is used for various community schemes
Octavia's minimalist style is reflected in the hotel rooms, which each have a king-size bed made up with cotton satin bedding from Casa Octavia's homeware collection.
Soft, neutral tones feature in the furniture, sourced from Mexican brands such as Ente, Onora and Encrudo.
"It's all about light and proportions and materials, giving a feeling of being a home away from home," said Palacios.
Bedding from Octavia's homeware collection features in the guest rooms
PPAA, or Pérez Palacios Arquitectos Asociados, was founded by Pablo Pérez Palacios in 2016. Elsewhere in Mexico City, the studio designed houses with latticework screens in the Lomas Quebradas neighbourhood.
In the Tacuba area of the city, architect Inca Hernández has renovated a historic building to create new apartments.
Photography is by Luis Garvan, Luis Young and Maureen Evans.

Styling links with CSS selectors
CSS selectors offer a powerful way to add style, and contextual information, to HTML elements, and while you can target element IDs, classes, etc. the spec hash been fleshed out over the years to support lots of other things you can easily select to style.
John Rhea highlights the wide variety in which they can be used in this excellent article, but for today we're just going to look at how they can be utilised for links.
Let's say you want to style links to PDF documents, signifying to the user that the link is to a 'document', rather than a Web page. This can be achieved like so:
a[href$=".pdf"] {   background: url('https://ift.tt/2n0g9v0)   0 50% no-repeat;   padding-left: 20px; }
The $= operator in the attribute selector targets the end of the attribute value, looking specifically for links to PDFs. It will then add the linked PDF icon before the full link, like so:
Tumblr media
This is just one quick example of how this can be used. You could also use this technique to style links to certain sites, style internal links differently to those that are outbound, or even to style certain images by targeting the src attribute of a file. It's worth playing around and experimenting!

Summary
Shade has found Honey Rich.  And she’s found her just as Honey is ready to go and pass into the next life.  In order to stop her, Shade switches places with her and stops her soul from moving on, allowing it to move into her body and Shade (Loma)’s into Honey’s.  As Honey figures out what’s happened, she is angry at Loma.  When Honey learns that her TV show is known throughout the galaxy, she relents a bit and agrees to show Loma what it’s like to be a star as long as Loma let’s Honey die when she’s done.
On Meta, we learn that there’s more to Mellu’s motivations for getting Loma back to Meta.  Apparently, there was something between him and Rac Shade.  They determine that Loma’s avian body is dying and send Lepuck to Earth to retrieve Loma in Megan’s body to stand trial.
As Loma is on a tour of a film studio with Honey Rich, Honey, in Megan’s body, reveals to Loma that Megan’s body is pregnant.  Loma is clearly shocked and an interesting conversation ensues.  Before they leave the studio, Honey is discovered again by a studio agent.
#gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Positives
Right away the coming of age theme for Loma is present again as she meets Honey Rich and begins to learn from her about life, death and human procreation.  Despite Loma being an avian alien, this book and issue addresses what it is to be human.  While it is dressed in the trappings of science fiction, at its core it is about people and relationships and what it means to be human.  In doing so, it can provide the reader a new perspective or a sympathetic point of view, both of which will enrich the reader’s experience, not only of the book, but with life as well.  If it makes you stop and think it’s good art.
As this series progresses, there is something that’s been here all along that may not be obvious.  There’s a dual edged commentary going on with Loma’s fascination with “Life with Honey.”  Not only do the episodes echo much of what Loma is experiencing on Earth, but it also suggests:  What do our children learn from television?  How are their expectations shaped my media?  This is particularly true with this issue as Loma learns that a lot of what she expected about life on Earth from watching “Life with Honey” just isn’t true after interacting with Honey Rich.
#gallery-0-11 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-11 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-11 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-11 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Negatives
There is only one aspect of this issue that I found distracting.  It comes towards the end as Honey Rich reveals to Loma that Loma’s body is pregnant.  The whole conversation about how that happened is genius.  It works on multiple levels and even has a bit of humor as Loma laments the differences in human and alien physiology.  When the scene references abortion, Honey Rich’s comment is troubling.  While I understand the perspective that is being given, for a book that has focused so much on themes of life, puberty and what it means to be human, Honey’s point of view lacks the understanding of the responsibility for one’s actions.
While the particular situation is more complex in this metaphor because Loma doesn’t know enough about human reproduction and from the narrative, the pregnancy is not a common sexually fertilized egg, believing that getting rid of an unwanted pregnancy is difficult because your body doesn’t belong to you, is a great misunderstanding of the responsibility of parents and soon to be parents.  Man or woman, once you have conceived a child, that child is your responsibility and that child comes first.
#gallery-0-12 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-12 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-12 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-12 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Verdict
Shade the Changing Girl continues to be one of the most unique comics on the market.  It approaches things differently and relies on real life more than fantastical trappings to engage the reader.  Even if you’ve never read an issue, it’s easy to get hooked on an issue like this one.

Wednesday Comics on Thursday (April 6, 2017)
It was a decent size release week for comics. Coming off a fifth week where DC gave us Hanna Barbara cross overs and Marvel handed us the fate of the X-Men and the Inhumans and not a whole lot else happened, it was nice to have a few new series and some of my favorites back in my stack. It also helps that it was a REALLY great week for comics.
Black Cloud #1 [Jason Latour, Ivan Brandon, Greg Hinkle, Matt Wilson]
There wasn’t much that was particularly live-blog worthy in this book, but it was a solid first issue, nonetheless. The story drops you into some narration about the dream world that Zelda comes from and lays out her scheme of selling access those dreams to the population of trust-fund kids that seem to make up most of the population in the city. There are some interesting dynamics at play between Zelda and the people she interacts with when she enters dream worlds. The inhabitants don’t seem to like her every much and I’m curious to see what’s going on with that. The art is solid and having Matt Wilson on colors can only ever improve a project and he’s definitely playing with some interesting elements here. I really dig Zelda’s character design and I’m loving her drop-crotch pants.
Story: 8  Art:  9 Rec? Give it another issue, then decide to drop or trade wait.
Eleanor & The Egret #1 [John Layman, Sam Kieth, Ronda Pattinson]
This book is absolutely delightful. I am a massive fan of almost everything Aftershock is putting out and Eleanor & The Egret falls perfectly in their line up of off beat, independent, books. Eleanor is an unassuming, regular person who just so happens to be a master of disguise and a master art thief. Also, her parter in crime is a talking Egret. The style of both the story and art can only be described as whimsical. The character designs and tone make it hard to place this in a specific time, which doesn’t work against it in a way that I thought it might. I’m really excited to see where this goes. More and more, Aftershock comics are becoming the books I look forward to the most every week.
Story: 9  Art: 9  Rec? Absolutely
Extremity #2 [Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer]
I don’t think I have any buttons left unpushed by this book. War in a sci-fi landscape, a fallen family, sibling drama, warrior girl and her family seeking revenge, big ass dinosaur monsters with a bunch of eyes, and a very soft boy with daddy issues and a brand new (slightly used?) robot friend named Shiloh. There’s nothing really worthwhile to say about this book because you should just read it. The art is beautiful, the story is compelling as hell, and I can’t wait to see what happens with all these characters. There are so many pieces already in play. It was just announced that this and the first issue are getting second and third printings respectively, so if you haven’t already, absolutely pick these up.
Story  10  Art 10  Rec? 100%
Paper Girls #13 [Brian K. Vaughn, Cliff Chang, Matt Wilson]
If you’re not already reading Paper Girls, then I don’t really know what to tell you except that you’re really missing out. While this isn’t the best place to jump on at all, the first two arcs have been collected in trade already. This is one of my default recommendations at work to people who come in looking for something new. Brian K. Vaughn has always impressed me with his ability to write believable teenagers, going all the way back to his Runaways days. As much as I love Saga, Paper Girls gives him a broader avenue to stretch that particular talent and I’m always excited to see that. While the girls are still split up somewhere in the distant past, Mac makes a discovery about the Hockey Stick they found in the future and KJ learns some interesting things about the future. There’s a panel towards the end that I’ve already posted that I kinda lost my shit over.
Story 9  Art  10  Rec? Stop what you’re doing right now and read this series.
Rock Candy Mountain #1[Kyle Starks]
This is a pure action comic with lots of homo-fighting and clever dialogue. While Jackson is in search of a mountain from a folk song, it looks like the literal devil is in search of Jackson in this post WWII homage to action movies and hobos. I might be completely wrong, but I think this is the first ongoing series for Kyle Starks? If I’m not wrong, then previous work with Image has been released in Graphic Novel form. If you’re a fan of any of his previous work, this book is not at all a departure from that. It falls right in line with Sexcastle in the ways in which it plays with genre conventions. I wish I had been able to find a digital copy floating around in the internet without paying for it a second time, because there are some truly fantastic panels in it, including the use of “bitch” as a sound effect.
Story 8  Art 9  Rec? “He’s got punch diarrhea and their faces are the toilet bowl.”
Shade the Changing Girl #7 [Cecil Castellucci, Marguerite Sauvage, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Dan Parent (back up)]
Saved the best book for last. Shade has become my favorite book over the last few months, it is weird and gorgeous in all the right places. Marguerite Sauvage was a flawless choice of fill in artist for this stand alone issue that establishes a lot of the background information on Loma--an alien from Meta who is considerably different from the original Metan, humanoid Roc Shade. This book also establishes a WHOLE BUNCH of delightfully canon queerness. Loma, a female identified alien bird, is shown laying on top of a self-identified “Meta Girl” and River is canonically bi. Not to mention the fact that Teacup mention’s having two mothers multiple times over the course of the issue. Sauvage kills it. Her style maintains the dreamlike quality of the book while adding her own identifiable style to the book.
Story 10  Art 10  Rec? Buy it immediately!
Not-So-Honorable Mentions:
Royals #1-- I am so curious about where Al Ewing is going to take the Inhumans coming out of IvX but man I wish Marvel would stop paring him with such bad artists. Meyer’s almost-but-not-really-manga style made this book impossible to read. I felt the same way about New Avengers, a book that starred several of my favorite characters. Jagged hair and small faces with disproportionate eyes are not typical aesthetic markers for superhero comics and they don’t work well at all. Marvel wants me to care about Inhumans and I am more than willing to give them a shot but I can’t with this art.
Still to read:
X-Men Gold #1-- I want to catch up on X-Men comics and IvX before I dive into this one, even though I now I probably don’t need to. Expect this one to be blogged about later. I have been letting myself become cautiously more excited about the X-Line as ResurrXion takes shape and now I’m at a point where if it’s bad, it will hurt my feelings. I don’t want to have my feelings hurt, so I’m putting it off.

Like many news stories of late, this one started with a tweet from the president. On September 27, Trump fired off an accusation that Facebook had always been against him. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded later that day with his own post, writing: “Trump says Facebook is against him. Liberals say we helped Trump. Both sides are upset about ideas and content they don’t like. That’s what running a platform for all ideas looks like.”
Both of them are wrong.
Over time, social networks start to develop their own reputations based on generalizations about who uses each network and what they tend to share. LinkedIn is tailored for the wealthy professional. Twitter serves witty media figures. Even if these interpretations have some truth to them, it’s hard to back them up or refute them. Look no further than Facebook, which has become a homebase for conspiracy theorists, great aunts, politically active friends from college, and over 2 billion people in between. At this point, users can portray Facebook any way that suits them.
But are these stereotypes really accurate?
Using Newswhip, a new social media monitoring platform, I was able to analyze the top-performing links since September 1 across four major social networks: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. My goal was to dig deep and examine if our general preconceptions about social media networks were correct.
Does one political party dominate Facebook? Is Twitter a media echo chamber? Has LinkedIn become the best place for thought leadership? And is Pinterest really free of any controversial content? Read on to find out.
Facebook: Do liberal or conservative outlets reign supreme?
Plenty of people get their news from social media. According to Pew research, 45 percent of all U.S. adults do so via Facebook. The issue, though, is how one defines “news.” While both sides of the aisle continue to be upset about bias and favoritism, Newswhip data suggests content from conservative media outlets is more popular on Facebook than content from liberal outfits.
Since September 1, thirteen stories generated at least 1 million Facebook interactions; five came from conservative sites, one came from a liberal site, and the remainder lacked any overt political affiliation.
Facebook has no systemic bias against Trump or conservative content. It’s also clear that Facebook isn’t surfacing all ideas with equal weight, contrary to what Zuckerberg implied in his post last month. This may not be intentional, but the platform’s algorithm and user demographics have allowed fringe right-wing sites like Conservative Tribune and American Military News to go viral over established news outlets.
As TechCrunch writer Natasha Lomas points out, “Facebook’s business benefits from increased user engagement, and made-up stories that play to people’s prejudices and/or contain wild, socially divisive claims have been shown to be able to clock up far more Facebook views than factual reports of actual news.”
Takeaway: All users should be wary of filter bubbles. But judging by this data, the biggest filter bubbles are shaded red.
Twitter: Is it really a media echo chamber?
Until I looked in Newswhip to see which stories generated the most tweets, I had never heard of the Korean boy band BTS. Secretly, though, they’re the biggest thing on Twitter right now. Of the top eight links with the most shares on Twitter, five are about BTS. The top result, which has received almost 400,000 tweets, is just a link to the group’s album on Apple Music. I’m no K-pop scholar, so I’ll leave the BTS analysis to someone more qualified. But from a social media lens, the unusual results can tell us a lot about Twitter: The platform has a deep identity crisis.
Twitter has always struggled to find its niche. While all other major social networks constantly grow, Twitter actually lost 2 million active users earlier this summer. After the announcement, Pivotal Research analyst Brian Wieser wrote, “We’re not overly concerned by this trend, as we have always believed Twitter to be a niche platform.”
Niche is the key word there. Twitter is definitely a place where media professionals can pat themselves on the back while complaining about the death of journalism. It’s where high-quality stories from major publications like The Atlantic, the BBC, and The New York Times regularly take off. But the platform has also been co-opted by trolls, bots, propaganda machines, and the guy in the Oval Office.
These forces are all competing for a finite amount of attention among the 150 million or so daily active users. As a result, a number of different communities have emerged. If you have something interesting to say to a particular community, then there’s potential here. It’s just hard to pinpoint which niches are primed to grow, which is why there’s room for K-pop sensations to thrive. And GoFundMe pages. And a GIF of a Google Doodle.
Takeaway: Twitter has become a niche platform, which limits the ability of brands and publishers to go viral if their content doesn’t fall under certain categories or focus on certain topics.
LinkedIn: The true home for thought leadership?
LinkedIn has always had the potential to be a powerful content-sharing platform, but it’s never been able to compete with Facebook. It’s currently the social platform best known for thought leadership, which still counts for something. As the go-to center for professional advice and commentary, LinkedIn has reserves of evergreen content that attract a high-earning audience.
Per Newswhip, the top-performing stories have close to 50,000 shares. Some offer a lot of tips and tricks for the workplace. You can get insights about job interviews and life goals. There’s also an emphasis on hearing from executives, which presumably can give you a roadmap for how to be a successful leader. (There’s a little news mixed in, like this Forbes piece about Michael Dell’s hurricane Harvey relief fund, which was shared over 43,000 times.)
This level of engagement puts LinkedIn well below Facebook and somewhat behind Twitter and Pinterest. The way the platform functions has led to an unusual dilemma. All users have the option of publishing content natively, which could cannibalize the impact of an external article or video link. Richard Branson, for instance, posts some of his musings directly to LinkedIn but links to others published on the Virgin website. Bill Gates does the same thing, alternating between LinkedIn and his personal blog. You get the sense that influencers aren’t sure when to share natively and when to link to an external website.
All social networks want to prioritize native content since it keeps users engaged inside their walls. But when Facebook ramped up Instant Articles, it did so with a monetization model. In addition to selling ads, Facebook made it clear that news publishers were the intended users of Instant Articles. On LinkedIn, individuals just publish native blog posts.
For now, there’s arguably more upside for influencer posts than articles from media companies. Publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN use LinkedIn to distribute their content, but they mostly include links related to business news, the economy, and personal finance. Compare that to Facebook or Twitter, where the same publications can post everything they create and generate higher engagement. Until that dynamic changes, LinkedIn will continue to be a more powerful tool for thought leadership than for typical content distribution.
Takeaway: LinkedIn is a great platform for established influencers to communicate with an audience. But media companies and brands may have better luck elsewhere if traffic and engagement are their top goals.
Pinterest: Is it the only social network free of controversy?
In September, Pinterest officially crossed the 200 million monthly users mark–a nice milestone for a social platform that has seen consistent growth in mobile searches and international users. Pinterest now boasts a bigger user base than Twitter and LinkedIn. What’s really remarkable about these upward trends is Pinterest has been able to drive increased engagement while avoiding almost all controversial content.
The top pins of September and early October include links to student awards, tips on painting your kitchen, and lots of recipes for everything from red velvet cheesecake to cinnamon sugar pumpkin bread. Eleven pieces of content had at least 40,000 pins, and 27 links had at least 25,000 pins.
If there’s any nit to pick here, it’s that Pinterest is a home for content that looks and sounds the same. It’s confined to a few main categories without much variance. For example, a lot of the successful food bloggers use a similar tone to introduce their recipes. Same goes for the high-quality photography and short videos of their food. So it’s hard to tell what makes one recipe get more engagement over another. As a result, it might be harder for a newcomer to thrive on Pinterest over the sites that already have a loyal audience.
But in a polarized social media landscape, Pinterest has emerged as a safe space, where recipes for pumpkin bread and apple pie doughnuts can overpower any slanted coverage of the NFL’s national anthem protests.
Takeaway: Even if you know what you’re going to get, it’s nice that there’s a place you can go online to look at hot cakes instead of hot takes.

Does Facebook Have a Liberal or Conservative Bias? And Answers to Other Big Social Media Questions
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
