What do you think of Ma Pines’s canon name according to the secret Lost Legends website?

I don’t think it’s a bad name!  Although it’s not my favorite of the suggested names she’s been given by various fans.  I’d love to know more about why it was selected!  I find that question as interesting as the name itself.

I don’t know much about the popularity of “Caryn” as an alternative spelling for “Karen”.  It’s apparently been a popular name in the U.S. since the 1940s or so. When derived from the name “Catherine”, the etymological origin is Greek, meaning “pure”.  But in Hebrew, the name can apparently mean “ray” (as in “ray of sunshine”).

None of that may be why it was chosen, of course.  It could be a name that belonged to someone’s relative. Although, we know that Alex and Ariel’s grandmother’s name was Marilyn.  (See below.)  But then, the equivalent of Ma Pines would be their great-grandmother, so who knows?  Or, they may have chosen a name unconnected to the family.

I do find it super interesting that they chose to indicate that Ma Pines is of Russian-Jewish heritage!  Again, I wonder if that’s semi-autobiographical, or what.  

Anyway… personally speaking, my preferences for Ma’s name swings between Cassandra, and Miriam.  Both are prophetess names, and I always like headcanons that say that although Ma Pines is a pathological liar and likely con-artist, that some of her “psychic” abilities are actually real.  :)

I’m also really fond of @icefeels  Cuban Ma Pines headcanon.  

But as I stated a couple of days ago, I think folks should have fun with these new revelations, if they want to!  Equally, I think folks should continue to use whatever headcanons they prefer for Ma.
