“no,   no,  it's not like that,”   he said.   such curious eyes,   the wizard thought.  they glistened like stars.  mortification turned to bewildered wonder as he asked,   “haven't seen you before,   have it?”   but,   wait.   surely not.  but   ----   what if?   ----   no,   not in a shitty tavern in a lacklustre village someplace in faerûn.  those he knew,   or thought he knew,   or thought he could remember,   were content on their plane.   he couldn't say he blamed them. “i'm --- serious, i swear.” wait, nevermind. “..... i should go.”

lex nodded in approval.   ��it's certainly not for everyone,”   he mused.  he took great pride in the creativity it afforded him,  whether casting something minor or disguising himself.  evocations and transmutations and the rest were popular for their own reasons,  but he just swore illusions required something that simply conjuring a fireball didn't.  

but something else she said also caught his attention,   something he didn't hear quite often.  “no wizard school for you either,   i take it?  my own,  uh,  adopted father taught me.   and he's not an illusionist.”

Ah, no, she doesn't want that. Callisto waves away his mention of debt with another dismissive hand. "No, you don't need to worry about that. You'' have done me a favour first, that's enough." Never mind that that favour was already spoken for.

"I started practising quite young - we're a wizarding family, so I was learning as soon as I could read. I, however, also favour illusions - made me the worst choice to take over the shop but also the only choice, so no one could say much about it. I think they're all just miserly because I used to make distractions so I could nick treats."

the closer we get to this city,   the more nervous you become,   alexius had said,  with perhaps more compassion and concern than sense.   i thought getting to baldur's gate was a good idea,   but now you're starting to make me worry.   not the smartest thing to say to a man he'd barely met,   perhaps?   he kicked himself,   feeling like a fool.

“not to pry,   i mean. or anything like that.”   he was weary.   he'd spent far more time out of doors the last several weeks than he'd ever desired in his life,   trying to navigate more perils than he could count.   “---- i think we'd have found out if the city was destroyed by now,   if that's what you're worried about.”

he was a bit enraptured with the sight of the bird,   so regal with its pearlescent white feathers,  but the wizard took in the visage of his fellow traveller with an equal curiosity.   “i don't know if you know another way to baldur's gate,”  he said,   “but there have to be thousands encamped on the road.”   even with his most cunning guises there would be no safe way to cross,   he feared.   “if that's where you're headed,   i wouldn't recommend it.” he couldn't escape this place swiftly enough.

you sound so feywilds with that.   now that rin had mentioned it,  perhaps that was his problem.  it was as though those native to the material plane could tell there was something off about him,   just as he thought there was something off about them,   that their habits remained almost incomprehensible to him.   he hadn't realized there may be a difference between them,   some kind of gap in understanding.   but what was he to do about it?

still,   rin's suggestion surprised and warmed him.   it relieved him,   he realized,   how he'd spent so long (what must have felt like so long) longing for someone or something familiar through the haze.  no one else had seemed so amenable to the drifter.  lex understood why but it hadn't done much to ameliorate the ache of rejection or outright hostility.

“alright,   then,”   he said hopefully.   how was he to say no to such a thing? some of rin's suggestions had been questionable before, but the elf seemed decent. no, what a fool he would be to decline.  lex thought a moment.  “just,   uh,   would your sister   ....   mind?   i would hate to impose.”

rin blinks, smiles, and shakes his head a little bit. "you sound so ... feywilds with that." everything has a price, an exchange to be made. it's almost stereotypical fey. well - - - not that things are all that different around here, or even in the astral, but it's ... different. it's a promise of having to give something in return in the feywilds, and it's often a price far too costly.

"you could give me ... uhhh ... the pleasure of your company! you seem nice, and my sister - who i travel with - is so ..." hm, how to describe daefina without scaring off this potential new friend? "... well, i'd love to have another friendly face around. we're sort of wandering about at the moment - she's the one who designs the travel plans - and i'm sure we will stumble upon a crossing at some point."

why offer aid to a stranger? well, why not. it'll be amusing for a while, and lex seems nice, and rin is woefully short on friends in the material plane. he had plenty back in the astral, and an approximation of such in the feywilds, but the material? and besides, the entire trip through this places is entirely his sister's plot, and he's merely tagging along for the ride and in case one of their other siblings decides he has to die for them to take the throne. she's like a bodyguard-slash-future queen. "i could help you get back over if we do. when, even!"

He knows some spells himself, thanks to his draconic sorcerer heritage and his rather unusual, violent upbringing. Still, it's best not to rely on magic too much. "I've got some torches I can share with you. And a knife or two as well. You use a knife before, or do you prefer magic?"

Trying to think about rgu ocd headcanons ⌛ (a little messy and sorry if it's out of character)

cw: descriptions of different types of ocd obsessions (the descriptions are simple, but if reading about the themes of your obsessions is a trigger for you, please avoid reading this post), mentions of abuse

Juri has magical thinking and her way to cope with that is hating everything related to magic. She has basically overcome it but from time to time she has psychotic episodes because of it. How much she hates miracles is both related with Shiori and is a way to cope with her OCD.

Miki's obsessions are around order, perfectionism and symmetry. He can spent hours trying to get everything Just Right and feels but about it. He has only talked to Juri about this and she advised him using her own experience as a reference (though she didn't told him that part). Idk if the way he uses his chronometer would be related to a compulsion or if it would be stimming. Maybe a mix of both, depending on the situation.

Anthy has intrusive thoughts about how people perceive her and would check her interactions with other too much. She would also check constantly if Akio is near after escaping (this would be also related with PTSD). She also has a tendency to hoarding but she keeps it controlled.

Nanami suffers from obsessions around her relationships with others and around her own identity because of how Touga groomed and manipulated her. She denies this but her mind is constantly ruminating.

But then all of them go to therapy and learn how to cope in a healthy way :D

despite the picturesque beauty of the wetlands,  unease lingered at the back of the wizard's mind.   there was a sort of strange familiarity to the sensation crawling at the back of his neck,  coupled with a feeling that he was being watched.   magic?   

lex thought a moment,   mentally listening for any indication of magical disturbance.  he scarcely needed to even think,   easily recognizing the thumbprint of powerful illusion magic.  over two decades in the feywild and his own favortism of the discipline had well attuned him to it.

it wasn't a pretty wilderness at all.  it was a swamp,  moist and dark and stinking and dead.   a disgusted expression crossed the wizard's features. the illusion crafter must have been one of exceptional power and talent,   to craft something so elaborate.  it was only though years of training that his own illusions could trick the eyes but the ears.  on such a scale,  to trick eyes,  ears,  and scent?  unfathomably,   enviously powerful.   “uh   -----  hold    ---   hold on,”   lex said,  grabbing shen's wrist to stop him.  a good sign that they hadn't seen either of mayrina's brothers yet?  possibly? not that it was particularly comforting.

“i know you're not a wizard,  but focus on the environment.  do you   .....    see that?   it's an illusion.”

You better have a really good excuse as to why we didn't hang out all the time during the cruise and it better not be because i was in my room reading romantic novels for most of the trip because i was feeling really single and alone so i turned to fiction to cheer me up, i did also watched Glory with Lisa and that made me stop being sad to anger so not really the ideal situation, okay what i am trying to say is i want to hang out with you and if you know any cute single guy send them my way so i can at least pretend i am trying. @kmvante​

a prickle of fear indeed coiled through him.   likely to die here.   he knew the place was unnatural,  how it wounded him to his very soul,  but hearing it aloud now he understood its danger?   not like this.  no,  no,  he couldn't die like this.  there was so much for him to do still.  to simply die the way he entered the feywild,  forgotten and without a trace?  it was unthinkable.  he couldn't.

but the elf's suggestion did indeed offer some hope.  the throb of his heartbeats started to wane.  he could think clearly.  he would think clearly.  he could not allow that fear to consume him.  he should not have ignored the warnings he'd gotten at the inn.  so many things he should not have done and only discovered when it was too late.  lex wondered bitterly when he would learn.  

“how have you lasted so long?”   he asked quietly.  and then,  “if you know the way back to last light,  i   ...  i think i would rather go back.  maybe it'll be good on you,   too.”

It seemed the traveller was not so different from the refugees who had been filtering through, then. Driven by a need that quickly became a desperation in these lands. Depending on how lost he became, his inevitable death might generate some powerful despair -- not an altogether complex emotion, but enough to pique a shadar-kai's interest.

He Who Was did not mind leading people astray for this reason, like a will-o-the-wisp guiding adventurers deeper into a bog. To truly draw out the individual tragedy, however, took a lot of work, and He Who Was could just as well avoid the effort by offering actual help. It depended on his mood.

"I have lived here in the curse for months now," he said, which wasn't a lie. "I can fairly say your best chance is to return from whence you came, but even then you are likely to die here. The darkness has tasted you, and thus desires to consume you."

However, the introduction of hope makes despair more textured and interesting.

"In whichever direction you choose to depart, I may offer my services. I have come to know this place and its trickery well."

🥉 Three Elements for Writing the Setting of Your Story

🔑 The setting of a story is where and when your book happens. Your book setting is important because almost everything your character does will be affected by when and where they do them.

The three elements for how to write your story setting are time, location, and environment.

⌛ Time

Time is the when of your story. When thinking about your book, consider these when’s:

📅 What year? Your time period affects everything about your character. What clothes they wear, the technology and language they use, and their ability to move and interact in the world. A person in 1700 Europe isn’t going to use a cell phone to call someone, just like a person in 2023 United States isn’t going to speak Middle English.

🍁 What time of year? Is it winter, spring, summer, or fall? A character living in a Canadian winter isn’t going to spend time outdoors in a t-shirt and shorts. A person visiting Arizona in the middle of summer likely isn’t going to walk around in a jacket and jeans, no matter how stylish.

⌚ What time of day? This is more significant for scenes than the book as a whole. You can use the time of day to create a particular mood, such as nighttime for a feeling of danger or mystery. You should also consider the time of day for what your character is about to do. For example, someone likely isn’t going jewelry heisting at noon on a Monday.

⏳ Is time passing? Pay attention to how time is unfolding throughout your scenes and story as a whole. You have to account for any time that passes between scenes, when characters travel, or when you insert a flashback. Make sure your reader knows when your scene is happening, or they’ll be lost.

🗺️ Location

The location of your story is as broad as the country and region and as specific as the neighborhood or house. Like the time period, the location of your setting will affect your characters in all aspects of their lives: what they wear, how they speak, if they walk or drive or take the bus, etc.

If your book is fantasy, you will need to do some very detailed world-building work. A fantastic resource for this is The World Building Leviathan from Kittyspace.

🌲 Environment

The environment of your manuscript includes the physical world and social, political, and cultural influences of the time and location.

Take into consideration the environment’s climate and how it impacts your characters. For example, a character living in the tropics will have a vastly different life than someone living in the mountains of North Carolina.

What is the cultural, political, and social environment like in your character’s time period and hometown? These aspects can impact what your character believes in and the different values they hold dear. Societal norms vary across time and place, and it will take a lot of research to make sure you’re getting it right.

🙅‍♀️ Setting Don’ts

Newer authors often think they need a lot of exposition about the setting up front. This is called a “data dump,” and they are often very difficult to read. You don’t want to bore your readers with a lot of information about your world upfront. Rather, allow your setting to reveal itself slowly, either through your character or short bits of exposition throughout.

If you’re writing a fantasy or historical novel, avoid treating everyday objects as novelties. Even if that object is unique to you, it would not be unique to your character. If something is supposed to be ordinary to your character, treat it like it’s ordinary.
