background:
tw: parental rejection, familial rejection, infertility, neglect, abandonment
born as the first ( and only ) daughter to k. arvalan haripillai and deepa romeshnadar, her first taste of rejection came upon her parents finding out they would never have another child, let alone a son. always wishing for a progeny to carry on his family name, arvalan wrote all chances for a typical father / daughter relationship off. instead, he treated her as a nuisance, and his wife as a disappointment, all because of the existence of her.
this led to a childhood filled with nannies, and an adolescence filled with boarding schools. travelling all over the country, adhira had been thrown out of all of the schools her parents had sent her to, her way of sending them a message. if they wanted her to behave, they could parent her themselves. her plan backfired when her father put his foot down, shipping her off to london to live with his sister once she’d bled all of their options dry. she went fighting, of course, less than enthusiastic about being sent to a home that would never be home, and where her presence would be an inconvenience rather than a want.
adhira’s aunt ranya was no nonsense, instilling a real sense of discipline in her while also offering her the first caring hand she’d ever held. for the first time, school didn’t seem like such a chore, especially when she got to come home and learn herbology from her aunt with her cousins. this is where her knack for holistic medicine began, often trying different herbal combinations just to see what would happen. it’s not until she begins considering going off to university that her life turns down another rocky path, seeing more pros in NOT going, rather than going. first of all, who wants to give that much money to an institution ? second of all, there was so much world and so little time. after much consideration, she’d made her mind up, confidently breaking the news to her aunt. little did she know, her world would soon come crashing down.
ranya, not agreeing with adhira’s decision, saw no other choice than to call arvalan and tell him of adhira’s plans to backpack across europe. it’s not the educated background they planned for her, not the future they planned for her. furious, arvalan flew to london and tried to drag adhira back to sydney. she refused, vehemently, and arvalan saw no choice but to cut her off entirely and have his sister swear to never speak to her again.
devastated, adhira spent the next year trying to simply get back on her feet in london. eventually, she did, by working odd end jobs here and there. one day she realized she was headed nowhere, really, and falling into the exact cycle that her father had wished on her. this was enough to kick her ass into gear, selling everything she’d accumulated in her tiny closet of a flat, and investing all she’d earned into her original dream of backpacking across europe.
after spending a few years hopping around, spending no more than six months in one country, she decided it was time for a new adventure across the pond. the one state she’d always heard of ( for better or worse ): florida. she figured, what’s the worst that could happen ? one lease signed & two tenants believing the unit was theirs later, she's stuck living with maisie hoffman.
it's been a year now and she's been promoted from cashier to manager at tide & thyme, and trying her best to resist the urge to move on to the next place. the scariest part is, she could really see herself planting roots here. that is, if maisie doesn't run her out of town first.
