Are These Coffee Alternatives Worth The Hype?
From the Brain-Boosting Effects of Guarana to the Calming Properties of Matcha, These Drinks Offer Both an Energy Lift and Enhanced Mental Focus.
— By Jocelyn Solis-Moreira | August 29, 2024
For many, the day doesn’t begin without that first sip of coffee—a ritual so ingrained it’s almost synonymous with morning itself. But as interest in health and wellness grows, caffeine alternatives offering a different pick-me-up are gaining traction. From the ancient ritual of matcha to the probiotic benefits of kombucha, a range of options promises to energize your morning without the usual coffee jitters. Here’s what you need to know.
Mushroom Coffee ☕️
Mushroom coffee is emerging as an energy-boosting alternative to your regular cup of joe, says Jessica Gavin, a food scientist and author of Easy Culinary Science for Better Cooking.
This morning blend combines ground coffee beans with adaptogenic mushrooms like chaga, reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps. Unlike their psychedelic counterparts, these mushrooms won’t alter your mind, but they can help the body adapt to stress, improve immune function, and maintain steady focus, says Gavin. Adding mushrooms to your beverage also provides antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, selenium, and B vitamins.
According to Gavin, most mushroom coffee products use less caffeine—about 48 to 50 milligrams—compared to an eight-ounce cup of coffee which contains 80 to 100 milligrams of caffeine.
“Because mushroom coffee does not have the same taxing load on your central nervous system, one could reasonably assume it’s a better alternative than a cup of coffee or green tea,” says Yaa Boakye, a registered dietitian nutritionist and owner of Elite Body Data.
However, mushrooms like chaga can contain high levels of oxalates, which may increase the risk of kidney stones if consumed in excess.
Matcha Green Tea 🍵
Matcha, a potent form of green tea, delivers more than just a caffeine kick. With around 70 milligrams of caffeine per serving—more than the 50 milligrams in black tea—this herbal brew offers sustained energy without the jitters. According to Gavin, matcha’s unique combination of caffeine and antioxidants boosts brain energy while promoting relaxation, thanks to the amino acid L-theanine, which is known to reduce stress and protect against neuronal injury.
Yerba Mate 🧉
Containing roughly as much caffeine as coffee, South America’s super brew, yerba mate, packs more antioxidants than any other tea-based drink. Made from the leaves of holly trees native to the region, yerba mate offers a steady caffeine release, providing sustained energy without the jitters. According to Boakye, this tea is also rich in polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals not typically found in traditional caffeinated beverages.
Research shows that yerba mate can boost mental alertness and enhance physical performance. Additional benefits include antimicrobial properties, support for weight loss, and the potential to lower blood sugar, reduce cholesterol, and combat chronic inflammation.
Yaupon Tea 🫖
Yaupon tea, brewed from the leaves of the yaupon holly—the only caffeinated plant native to the United States—offers a mild yet energizing boost. Bryan Quoc Le, a food scientist and author of 150 Food Science Questions Answered, says that yaupon tea contains 0.1 to 2 percent caffeine, less than coffee’s 1 to 3 percent. However, it’s not just about caffeine; yaupon tea is rich in xanthines, including theobromine, which enhances mood and alertness without the jitters.
Kombucha 🧋
Kombucha, a fermented tea, is celebrated for its gut health benefits and mild stimulant effects. According to Le, kombucha retains some of the tea’s bioactive compounds, including 3 to 6 percent caffeine, depending on how it’s brewed. But the real star is its probiotics—beneficial microorganisms that nourish the gut’s “good” bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to improved cognitive functions like attention, memory, and learning. Additionally, kombucha is rich in B vitamins, which Boakye says help the body metabolize nutrients into cellular fuel.
Guarana ☕️
Guarana stands out for its impressive caffeine content, with berries containing 2 to 8 percent caffeine—far exceeding the 1 to 3 percent in coffee beans. In addition to caffeine, guarana is rich in stimulating compounds like theophylline and theobromine, which, according to Gavin, boost cognitive performance, reduce fatigue, and increase alertness. It also boasts antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Often found in energy drinks with doses ranging from 50 to 75 milligrams, guarana can also be added as a powder to smoothies or other beverages. However, Boakye cautions against excessive consumption to avoid caffeine crashes and jitteriness, noting that the FDA recommends a daily limit of 400 milligrams of caffeine.
“If someone is about to sit and do some office work, [guarana] is probably not a good idea,” says Boakye. “But if you’re about to go and do a workout or an intense boot camp, [it] might be helpful since it provides that quick burst of energy.”
Turmeric Lattes🥤
For a caffeine-free morning boost, turmeric lattes, known as golden milk, deliver powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Made with turmeric and curcumin, this golden drink can be enhanced with a touch of coconut oil and black pepper, which improve curcumin absorption, says Gavin. Ginger, another key ingredient, aids digestion and adds a spicy kick.
“I prefer it in the morning because the combination of ingredients has a way of stimulating you,” says Gavin. She says the sensation of the gingery spices, pepper, and warm cinnamon on your tongue helps wake up the senses differently than caffeine.

If the poll attracted your attention, please, stay for a few more minutes and try your best to help Mohammed ( @save-mohamed-family ) and his family out.
Mohammed is father of three children, no older than six years old. His wife has cancer and urgently needs treatment abroad. The family needs to raise $40k USD by January to be able to evacuate and reach safety. They have already experienced so much loss and pain; please, let's do our best to help them out and escape the ongoing genocide.
This family is vetted and number #192 in el-shab-hussein's and nabulsi's spreadsheet
Here is the link to Mohammed's chuffed campaign. As for writing this post, it hasn't even reached $1500 yet.
The time is of highest essence here. Can we try and raise at least $2000 till the end of this week?
If you have any spare money, please, consider sending it this family's way. If you cannot contribute by donating, share it with any of your friends or relatives that might be able to do so!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are the pictures of Mohammed's children that he sent me via Whatsapp and asked to share in this post. Those kids deserve so much better than the horrible conditions they are forced to live in. They deserve a beautiful life alongside their mother and father, far from war, famine and genocide.

"Currently"
Since I've already been tagged by both @figuringthengsout and @notasapleasure I should finally do something about it🫡
favorite color: recently it's yellow💛💛💛 Juicy mango type of yellow the most. Often combined with black and white because I enjoy looking like an oriole:
Tumblr media
last song: Tina Turner - GoldenEye
last movie: Mask (1994) (and maaan how I never suspected I would look at Stanley Ipkiss as a relateable character when I grow older...😅)
currently reading: Romans na receptę - another one of few books by Monika Szwaja that my mum borrowed in our local library. I like her style and it breaks my heart that she died being only 65🥺 There's always so much hope and friendliness and support in the world that she's depicting. And, fascinating enough, there's usually AroAllo woman representation somewhere and depicted in the positive way! Of course it is not called "aromantic" by a polish writer born in 1949, more likely for the main male character to call that "AroAllo" woman character a "robot" who "uses him as as a sex toy"🤭 - BUT nevertheless even the male protagonist really likes her, appreciates her skills as loyal assistant, treats her as good friend to confess his problems to and genuinely wishes her all the luck!👍 In other books you can expect other queers occasionally too (like a teenage son who turns out to have a boyfriend), but it's always in sympathetic and realistic yet bringing-back-faith-in-humanity kind of way🫠
currently watching: umm... nothing actually (I feel like a weirdo😑 Like maybe I should start watching sth finally just so I could fill in the meme next time around? I do have a lot of series on my "to watch list")
currently craving: MANAGE TO GET SHIT DONE!💪 seriously I need either only 2 working days a week instead of 3 or... better time organisation😩 (so what that I have 4 "free" days a week now when there are emails to answer and books to read, and my pictures to make into album, and family members to visit, and all the new pictures' ideas to draw, and new tumblr posts to create, and those fic-WIPs waiting for so long already, and... I wonder if scheduling everything in precize days and hours would help me to feel more organised somehow?🤔 or only feel more remourse for not being able to follow the schedule?😑)
tea or coffee: Oh, so glad you asked! Tea please, black, strong, no sugar, no milk. Lemon appreciated but not necessarily. Thank you!🫖☕️
Tagging: @zorilleerrant , @chrisoels , @swordoftheseeker , @kaiaprax , @imaginatorofthings , @parttimereptile , @corey-m13 - some of you won't play probably so I'm just saying a friendly "hi"👋

Pairings: Caitlyn Kiramman x Fem Artist!Reader
Warnings: none just pure fluff and awkwardness. (Also english is not my first language so sorry for the errors)
Author’s notes: Inspired by that trend where couples draw or paint each other’s portraits except you two are friends. A LOT of staring cause you two are both cowards to do or say anything more than that.
Tumblr media
The aroma of grounded coffee beans and freshly baked pastries wafted around the bustling cafe of Piltover. It was the perfect place for you to unwind for awhile, relax into your seat and enjoy the delicious pastries while you finished your little project. The sounds of people conversing and giggling with one another slowly faded into the background as you found yourself engrossed into the image you were trying to draw before your focus was abruptly pulled away from your sketchbook as a familiar thickly accented voice rang in your ears.
That recognizable pretty accented voice could only belong to Caitlyn Kiramman. An enforcer you’ve frequently met and conversed with during you strolls around Piltover. You’ve grown quite close to her despite the differences in your paths, finding common interests and a growing interest towards each other.
Except neither of you knew that the feelings were mutual, convincing yourselves the budding relation with one another is purely platonic.
“If you don’t mind, may I join you?” Caitlyn asked once more, noticing how your focus was still a little bit on your sketchbook.
“Yeah, yes of course” You replied, quickly snapping out of your daze to focus on Caitlyn now. Looking up to see her in her enforcer attire, prim, proper and as always she looked stunning.
She then took the seat infront of you, getting a much closer look of what you were working on “That looks quite hard” she said as she observed the drawing on your sketchbook. Her gaze lingering on the intricate details, the smooth and sharp lines and the blurred shading.
“It’s only hard if you don’t simplify it into basic shapes. Draw what you see not what you think” You playfully retorted.
“Do you think we can draw each other’s portraits then?” She suddenly asked, challenging you and herself. It was a spontaneous idea and compulsive request, a challenge she’ll gladly do if it means she can shamelessly stare at you with no qualms.
“I believe so.” You replied a little too quickly, without much thought or hesitation you accepted her challenge with the same eagerness. An opportunity to stare at her shamelessly to your hearts content too.
So began the challenge of drawing portaits while you silently basked in each other’s company. A few lingering gazes here and there, the occasional sounds of pencils swipping and sliding against the papers and waiters passing by to serve you two.
As you got more and more engrossed into drawing the portrait, your reference started to fade into your mind. Slowly the image of Caitlyn blurred, unable to get a clear look of her features so you peeled your gaze away from your sketchbook to get another good look of your reference. But your instead met with Caitlyn’s eyes staring right back at you, a gaze that could only describe admiration. It’s as if her eyes were tracing every single dip and curve of your features, memorizing the beauty marks that littered your skin and just about inspecting your beautifully sculpted face.
You were staring right back at her too, admiring the curve of her jaw, the tall, slim bridge of her nose and just how sharp and chiseled her features were. Of course this was all in pretense of trying to observe and understand your reference—or so what you tried to convince yourself with.
The silence was stretching, tense yet it wasn’t awkward. Just two girls staring at each other—Admiring the features that uniquely made up each other’s faces for a long while until Caitlyn decided to break the ice, her voice cutting through the silence.
“I’m sorry for staring, it’s just that your easy on the eyes.” She said with an amused chuckle, her words spilled out faster than her mind had processed it.
“easy on the eyes to draw” she sheepishly added, swiftly and smoothly hiding the hidden implications of her compliment—but it was too late for that now.
You immediately knew and understood what she fully meant with her words. You practically choked on your own saliva as you gulped down the wrong pipe. Coughing as your throat was irritated with the unsual sensation. Both of you were in disbelief on what she said, flustered even.
Caitlyn watched in horror as her words took effect on you, coughing and struggling to compose yourself before she quickly suggested “Here, drink this” offering the tea she ordered to soothe your irritated throat.
Yet again, you were staring at her then at the teacup. Your mouth seemed more dry and irritated than it was before as you stared at the teacup Caitlyn offered, it was a simple cup of earl grey tea but one that touched Caitlyn’s lips.
“I can order some water for you if you’d prefer that. I understand that tea doesn’t suit everyone tastes, it’s known to taste quite bitter or plain to some—“ Caitlyn quickly suggested, rambling off as she sensed your hesitance before she finally just stood up from her seat to make her way towards the counter.
It was a simple remedy for both your throat and mouth but it seemed like a hard pill to swallow. You weren’t disgusted nor against the tea she offered it’s just that the circumstances the teacup was in made your cheeks burn softly. It flustered you to drink out of the same teacup Caitlyn drank from—to touch the same rim Caitlyn’s plump, soft and inviting lips touched.
“Nononono—this is fine, thank you” You quickly interjected with a sheepish smile formed on your lips, hastily picking the tea cup from the table. Staring it for a moment, the steam hovering against your face before you finally took a sip from it.
The tea tasted bitter with the various herbs and notes infused to it but it’s unpleasant taste was immediately replaced with sweetness, giddiness as you were pressing your lips against the surface that once made contact with her lips. Receiving an indirect kiss from Caitlyn.
Immediately Caitlyn sat back on her seat, her gaze flickering between the teacup held by your hands—and how your lips wrapped around the rim as you drank from it.
Clearly, you weren’t the only one affected by this cup of tea….
“It’s sweet.” You were lying obviously but you were feeling too giddy to taste the bitterness of the tea
Caitlyn was about to playfully retort to your blatant lie but the familiar voice of her coworker calling her out in the distance cut her off.Unfortunately duty calls for Caitlyn, and your time with her is abruptly cut short by her duties as an enforcer.
Caitlyn let out a soft exasperated huff as she stood up to leave and go back to her shift, frustrated that her break time ended a little too soon and she’ll have to leave you now.
“I’ll see you around?” She asked as she gazed at you one last time, her eyes flickered around your features as if memorize all of it to remember for later.
“In a while.“ You smiled. It was a definite answer, one that your confident of. You were going to see each other later, after all you two always found each other.
She then smiled back at you as she waved you farewell before she left to go back to her shift, patrolling the streets of Piltover.
You were left with her unfinished cup of tea, a sweet memory to go along with it and an unfinished protrait of you. One that you would hold onto until you two finally meet each other once more.

The Real Reason You Shouldn’t Order Coffee or Tea on an Airplane! Here's Why You're Better Off with Canned and Bottled Drinks.
— By Jelisa Castrodale | June 4, 2024
Tumblr media
Photo: Osobystist/Getty Images
Regardless of where you’re traveling from or where you’re flying to, the best part of being on a plane is when the flight attendants start handing out snacks and drinks. Would I like a bag of pretzels? Yes, I would. Do I want a second package of cookies? Of course, I do.
As enjoyable as it is to crack into a tiny bottle of in-flight bourbon — or even a can of Sprite Zero — one Former Flight Attendant is Warning Passengers Off Ordering two common beverages. TikTok influencer Kat Kamalani, who says she worked for six years “with one of the biggest airlines that you could possibly imagine” strongly recommends avoiding any drink that isn’t served “in a Can or a Bottle.”
In an older TikTok that’s making its way around the internet for a second time, Kamalani says that coffee, tea, and any other drinks that require hot water are no-gos. “The reason being is that those water tanks [on the aircraft] are never cleaned and they are disgusting,” she alleges, adding that flight attendants “rarely, rarely” drink coffee or tea during their shifts.
Kamalani also alleges that the coffee makers on the plane are “rarely cleaned unless they are broken” and, in case you didn’t feel queasy already, she delivers an even grosser closing argument, adding that the coffee is made “by the lavatories.” (You can guess what she’s suggesting — or you can choose to skip right ahead to the next paragraph without thinking too hard about it.)
Beyond all that, according to a 2019 airline water study by CUNY's Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center that ranked 12 regional and 11 major airlines, airplane water tanks — which are typically situated beside or near the bathroom — are the very same source of water as the bathrooms.
So, is Kamalani right? On a thread on the r/Delta subreddit, a passenger asked the same question about the safety of in-flight coffee and the majority of responses suggested that it wasn’t really anything to worry about.
“I'm an airline mechanic and can say that the potable water system does get cleaned — we basically fill it with diluted bleach and let it sit for several hours before purging the whole system a few times,” one Redditor wrote. “Coffee machines don't seem to have a long lifespan considering how often we swap them out [...] I wouldn't worry too much. As someone else pointed out, if the pilots are drinking it every day you should be alright.”
Another user, who said they were an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic, added that although the water lines were “difficult to clean,” they were still frequently flushed with cleaning products. “Plus, the water is moved through them so frequently I wouldn’t count on much if any buildup,” they wrote. “I’d vouch for it and I drink it myself.”
youtube
But according to one aviation insider, the only time passengers really have to worry about the drinkability of the water onboard is if the flight is departing from a country where the water — from any source — is less drinkable. On top of that, the water in every cup of coffee is heated.
“For the science-minded folks, bacteria is killed about 175 degrees, it doesn’t have to boil,” Vance Hilderman, currently the CEO of Aviation Development Company AFuzion, told USA Today. “On the airplane, water boils at the 7,000-foot equivalent of about 195 degrees [...] If we look at the World Health Organization, bacteria is killed at 170, so all that coffee and tea is good.”
So it sounds like it’s up to you whether you’d really like to have a cup of joe at 30,000 feet. And, if you still can’t bring yourself to order one, we’re guessing there’s probably going to be a Starbucks or two at that arrival airport.
