Sonic au cause this has been marinating in my brain for over a week.

Basically, Queen Aleena (sonic's mom from sonic underground) but instead of being a queen, she's the guardian of the time stones on little planet (from sonic CD).

Her three triplets: Sonic, Moxie (Manic), and Scarlett (Sonia) all lived with her on little planet in peace until- oops! Eggman has killed her children and robotizied little planet. Aleena tries to turn back time with the time stones to save her children and the planet, and it fails, over, and over, and over. Until it ends up messing with time a bit, causing a young Sonic to wake up on a robot-less little planet, with only his medallion(from sonic underground) in his hand and faint memories in his mind, that he thinks are just dreams. (Basically Aleena accidentally pulled a Dr Gaster and is stuck in the limbo of time)

Then Sonic leaves for Earth and the current Sonic cannon told through the games occurs. After a while (a little after sonic cd takes place) Moxie wakes on little planet, medallion in hand but a bit more convinced his faint memories are real, then Scarlett wakes a while later, medallion and faint memories in tow. Moxie and Scarlett reunite, declare each other family, and chill on little planet.

After an even longer time, Aleena wakes next to the time stones on little planet, memories fully intact and released from time limbo. She reunites with Moxie and Scarlett, and the two triplets go to Earth to search for their brother, Aleena staying behind to guard the time stones.

Through various highginks and adventures while getting used to city life, Scarlett and Moxie find and meet Sonic and Tails, and Sonic realizes that those faint memories of a past are real. Tails is immediately recognized as family, no questions asked. Soon the triplets and Tails go to see Aleena on little planet, and they reunite, (Tails is further recognized as family by Aleena).

TLDR: Single mother and time stone protector Aleena the hedgehog goes through so much suffering and timeline breaking to make sure her planet and children are alive, succeeds, and adopts another child.

Yeah so I tried multiple times to draw an alicorn Aleena but no matter what I did, I just wasn’t feeling it. Not gonna let these sketches go to waste though

The real rare pair curse is wanting Wrex and Aleena content and there not being any. I don't care if it's romance or not. I just need it injected directly into my veins. This happens every time I replay ME1.

Like imagine the interactions. She should have been an ME2/ME3 companion and i will die on that hill.

I’m the anon who read The Lost Prince because of your recaps. I’m re-reading now to pick up on foreshadowing and catch more details now that my exams are over. It’s impressive that your characters feel so consistent throughout, even though Aleena starts out seeming really reasonable and in control, and Shadow starts by pointing a gun at Tails.

Now, on the one hand, the only actual response I have for this is

You are too sweet, I'm so grateful.

But I'm always quietly hoping people will ask me about characterisation so I'm TAKING THE OPPORTUNITY, I'm sorry.

Good characters are complicated and multi-layered, and are both good and absolutely horrible depending on context, and I try so hard to put that into the fanfics I write.

With Aleena, in canon, the thing I find both frustrating and compelling about her is how much she loves, and is loved by, these children she has never actually met. Now, obviously, this is because the American heteronormative-narrative means that families must love unconditionally, but if you Are A Problem as I am, you can instead interpret this as her being more in love with the idea of her children, and them, in turn, being in love with their mother and queen as a concept.

And people will do so much to hold on to the things they love, even if they never really existed in the first place.

And I think this applies to her competency as queen, as well. She loves her people, and wants to protect them and provide for them, but she doesn't know how. She was raised to do so in a kingdom that had been safe and prosperous (and pro-monarchy) for 500 years. She probably has absolutely no skills in legitimate diplomacy or crisis management. So when things are fine, she was probably... fine.

But then along comes Robotnik, and he has solutions to problems Mobians never realised they had, because they'd been FINE for 500 years. To paraphrase Henry Ford, if you ask the people want they want, they just want faster horses, and Robotnik gave them cars.

But Robotnik was evil, and so obviously Aleena seems the better option, but... she hasn't learned any better. She's NOT good at what she does. And she is not teaching her children to be better, either, because she doesn't know how!

And I would argue this is obvious through the series, too, because 80% of the time, her opening monologues have literally NOTHING to do with the plot of the episode. I'm pretty sure this is just fumbled writing, but I, as mentioned before, AM A PROBLEM and instead take that as Aleena just not really having much of a clue.

But she means well. She loves so much, and so hard, and she is doing the best with her capabilities, and there is no one to teach her better but the child she thinks she needs to contain and protect most of all.

And the question is, can real love defeat idealised love? That is always my question.

At least, that's what I've been going for.

And now SHADOW, on the other hand -

Okay, ship time. Surge x Sonia.

The entire thing of it is that I think Surge would have no idea Sonia is related to Sonic, and Sonic is mentally slamming his head intl the wall every time his sister talks about "Her fun green girlfriend who has electric powers and a funky little teal bud!" To escape the urge to tell her that Surge isn't any good for her because Sonia is ready to kick his ass the second he says anything about it.

Manic is just watching this all go down while sipping a milkshake on the couch and not caring much. He thinks Surge just needs to chill out a bit about her hatred for his brother, but otherwise she's cool.

Cue Surge's mind exploding at the realization of Sonic being Sonia's sister, and Sonia desperately trying to not let her kill him. Instead, Surge just does the whole "Ha! I'm dating your sister!" Every time Sonic encounters her and Sonia in public.

I think the dynamic is funny, and kinda adorable.
