"you can't think like that."
"i can. you really think all of this is beautiful?"
"absolutely."
the creatures have been following the ship for a few days now. if you squint, they look a little like snakes. slimier, maybe. if snakes swam between stars and curled up on the outer ledges of expedition vessels.
ravi still feels like one day he's going to find one in the shower drain, even though there's no way for them to get inside. the observation deck is plenty close enough.
"i hate it."
this is about the point where most crew members usually leave the conversation, if they haven't already. pradeep looks sad.
ravi doesn't want to think about why that bothers him, so he presses on: "this is wrong. humans weren't meant to see any of this, it's—"
strange. frightening. something dan would have loved.
"isn't it incredible, though? that we made it this far out? getting to experience it all? don't you find that amazing?"
no, no, and no. nobody, not even pradeep mishra, signed up for three years in the most isolated corner of the known galaxies because everything was sunshine and roses back home.
pradeep considers the silence he gets in response, drawing his own conclusions from it. "i think that's a sad way to be," he says at last, successfully making ravi feel both pissed off and an inexplicable need to defend himself. "i'm sorry."
sorry for him, he means.
whatever. ravi doesn't need to love the universe to do his job in documenting it. none of them do. he can't understand why pradeep believes it's so essential, why everyone else seems to agree with him.
it never is. it never will be. the sooner everyone accepts that, the better off they'll all be.
still—pradeep looks at him like he's the one who's lost.

ADREFFE’S MAIN LOCATIONS.
Unlike most regions, Adreffe doesn’t split itself up into cities. Instead, to preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible, the region is organised by its biomes and what Gyms can be found there.
THE GRASSLANDS: A large, flat open area of land with no real remarkable features. No exceptional weather or natural effects.
Reception/Check-in Building, with Sion’s Normal Gym on the floor above it.
The Contest Hall.
Staff and student dormitories, and the newly-build hotel for guests, tourists and contestants.
The kitchens and cafeteria. Molly’s self-run bakery sits next door, with her Alcremie and Slurpuff eager to sell whatever treats they helped her make today.
The current school buildings. Used for theory lessons only.
Cadmael’s Fighting Gym, a recycled school building left over from Adreffe’s early days.
The Combination Tactics Gym - co-run by Eira, Wilbur, Dante and Argo. It sits on the edge of the grasslands to prevent Eira’s weather moves from affecting anything outside the Gym.
Evelyn’s Ghost mansion. It only appears at night, and in the day is replaced by a rundown ruin of what used to be the biggest dormitory on Adreffe.
THE FOREST: A thick sea of trees, many of which are hundreds of years old. Tall grass is longer here, making the likelihood of wild encounters much higher.
Connery and Briar’s shared Grass/Bug treetop Gym. A large Xerneas statue sits nearby, overtaken by wildlife and turned into a breeding ground for many pokemon.
Connery’s berry orchard, mostly run by his team of helpful Grass types.
Professor Fontaine’s Poison mushroom Gym and his small medicine/beauty product store. All products are made from a base of Pecha berries to reduce the effects of any poison they might come into contact with.
Molly’s Fairy Gym, sat in the middle of Florge’s flower meadow. Oricorio, Vespiquen and Ribombee love this place.
A tea room, the Night Noctowl, designed to cater towards those staying up through the night. It’s almost entirely staffed by a single Ludicolo and his group of Indeedee friends. One of the most frequent visitors is a wild Kadabra with a liking for green tea.
Mercedes’ Psychic Gym and therapy office. The Munna-maintained Wonder Room guarantees total soundproofing for privacy, and the walls themselves can go from transparent to opaque at her request.
The Lunar Pool. A hidden-away pool that attracts a large population of Lunatone. Its counterpart is Solar Point, up on the mountains.
Part of Daphne’s Living Museum of Fossil pokemon. Cranidos are most common here, often competing to knock down the biggest tree as quick as possible.
THE VOLCANIC FIELD: Dried, unworkable land surrounded on all sides by volcanoes and a difficult-to-climb mountain range. Fire and Rock types are most common here.
Steffan’s Fire Gym. He sits proudly in the center of the volcanic heat, his Gym even carefully carved into the shape of one.
Frankie’s Steel Gym and workshop. The Bouffalant and Tauros are able to spar with each other in peace, and the oppressive heat makes little difference when he spends most of his time dealing with molten metal anyway.
A workout Gym for humans and humanoid pokemon. The punching bags are almost always reserved by Machamp and Lucario, so if you want those you need to be fast!
Part of Daphne’s Living Museum of Fossil pokemon. Tyrantrum love this area and can frequently be seen hunting and socialising within the Museum’s confines.
THE MOUNTAIN RANGE: Stretching across the north edge of the island is a set of mountains, varying in height and how easy they are to climb. In contrast to the volcanic field below, the summits are freezing cold.
Aedynn’s Dragon Gym, tucked away in a low-level cave. His Mega Rayquaza carving hangs from the ceiling, and Regidrago lights up the interior with its constant glow. He’s often helping a wild Garchomp raise her latest clutch of Gible.
Felix’s Gym battleground and lightning rod sit atop the tallest mountain peak. Their computer lab is hidden away underneath it in a maze of tunnels and password-locked doors.
Gwendolyn’s Ground Gym. She’s also made use of the underground, taking every safety precaution possible to make sure that the tunnel will be safe to battle in.
Daphne’s Rock Gym and the rest of her Living Museum. Her Gym itself is tucked away in a natural hole in the mountainside, and there’s no decor that hasn’t been chiseled from the surrounding rock walls.
Violetta’s Flying Gym, an observatory where she can see all of the sky above, and the battlefield itself suspended high up in the clouds. This battlefield is also where she teaches her more advanced Flying students once they’ve gotten used to riding at lower heights.
Solar Point is also up on one of the mountain peaks, Solrock’s favourite gathering place and breeding ground. Its moon counterpart is Lunar Pool, located in the forest.
The remainder of the Living Museum stretches up here, connecting the ocean, the forest, the volcanic fields and whatever species seek the cold and height of the mountains.
THE OCEAN: Two beaches, to the east and west sides of the region, overlook the sea. Naturally, Water types love these areas and will largely favour one side over the other.
Andrea’s Dark Gym lies on the East side, using whatever driftwood washes up as another resource to build her Gym building with. Her Gym Trainers are in charge of cleaning any litter they find.
Margourette’s Ice Gym and ballet studio is also on the East side. Both are made entirely out of ice and sit a little way out into the ocean. Their foundations are thick enough not to melt, but for safety’s sake they’re re-frozen every couple days.
The Vanilluxe ice cream parlour finishes off the East beach, a place that offers all sorts of cool treats for those feeling a little overwhelmed with the heat. Milkshakes, sundaes, frozen lemonades and everything else a person could want! They also sell sun cream, just in case someone forgot to pack theirs.
There’s a boutique on both beaches, though the colours they offer differ depending on location. Swimsuits are their best seller, but they stock everything from evening gowns to winter coats. A lot of it is pokemon inspired.
Jemima’s Gym is the only one situated on the West beach. She doesn’t mind, though - the lack of other Gyms means she’s able to claim a lot more space for her hobbies and take up more of the ocean with her Mantine surfing and Sharpedo jet-skiing.
Golduck act as lifeguards on the East beach, and Sealeo on the West. Both pokemon are incredibly strong swimmers and have been trained to recognise the signs of both people and pokemon in danger.

@cosmoscourge asked: What was the most difficult part of your character’s path in the Pokémon world?
Both Siôn and his brother Steffan come from the Oblivia region, and both were around to see Dolce Island get vaporised. Siôn was thirteen at the time, Steffan was nine. Though they tried their best to help with the evacuation effort, there were thousands of pokemon on that island and unfortunately not all of them could be gotten off safely before the beam hit. There were Rangers stationed there too, many of them young adults fresh out of their training schools, and the village mourned their deaths for months afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a difficult time for Siôn, especially since he’d been waiting for some last-minute hero to dive in and save them all, like what had happened in other regions. He questioned everything, had a quick flirt with a more cynical “humanity is inherently evil” type of thinking, but eventually pushed that away and sought a more healthy viewpoint. It was this desire to rediscover the good in humanity that led him to Adreffe, having heard wonderful things about their approach to people and pokemon alike.
How did/would your muse decide who to keep and who to drop from their team?
It was a mutual agreement between Siôn and his pokemon before he moved to Adreffe! He’s always tried to be transparent with them, and after the tragedy in Oblivia he lost all desire to follow his ambition and become a professional Trainer. For a while he conflated ambition with arrogance and power-hunger, deciding to release all of his pokemon and allow the ones that wanted to roam freely by his side. Putting them in the PC Box felt cruel, especially when he didn’t have a plan to resume training at all in the future, so letting them make their own decisions felt like the most ethical way to go.
Most returned to the wild, but his Torchic actually switched over to his brother and became Steffan’s starter. Torchic is still used in the Fire Gym today.
It was Adreffe’s then-Champion that helped coach Siôn into getting comfortable with battling again, teaching him the distinctions between healthy ambition like a Champion title and the all-encompassing need for power Oblivia felt the ramifications of, and only once he’d learned that did he re-catch the pokemon that had stuck with him. The Champion title was passed onto Siôn when he turned eighteen, in recognition of the growth he’d undergone.
Who does your character look up to in the Pokémon world?
So I know that I seem incapable of answering a headcanon ask without bringing up the Uniman League, but Renate Rubin is a perfect example of someone Siôn would admire. He can see a lot of himself in her, in that while they struggle they still try, they’re soft and kind and fair even when faced with an uncaring world. He thinks Renate is incredibly strong, and he wouldn’t be shy about telling her so.
Aside from that, naturally he respects the other Normal specialists across the world. It’s a difficult type to train competitively, so he’d like to talk with the others and hear what their experiences were like.
Who does your character dislike most in the Pokémon world?
AZ. From the stories they’ve heard, the Ultimate Weapon bears far too many resemblances to the Sky Fortress in terms of power and intended use, so neither brother will forgive him for creating it. They’re not even sure if he’s a real person or just a Kalosian legend, similar to Galar’s Robin Hood, but either way they are not a fan of his actions.

ravi, because he's insufferable, will turn up to team meetings and play games on his phone / comms device the whole time because "pradeep can give me the notes after".
pradeep takes issue with this — "you can't assume i'll give you my notes, you don't know i was taking notes" — and will let ravi suffer the consequences of his poor choices from anywhere between a couple of hours to a day, but usually leaves the notes somewhere ravi can find them. eventually.

a timeline of fucked-up things that happen after ravi kills the ~ thing that was kind of but not exactly a bird ~
week 1: things go well. they go like......really well. weirdly well. they're not used to things not getting fucked over at least a little but like hell anyone's complaining.
week 2: the ship stops moving. every engineer and technician converges on it but they can't find anything broken. they can't even turn the ship to face another direction.
week 2.5: after almost two days straight of trying to fix a problem nobody can find, captain lorna russell sends out a distress signal. everyone knows they're too far away from any inhabited planets for anyone to hear them or be able to reach them, and nobody mentions it.
week 4, day 1, morning: the water systems stop working. investigation into the ship's water supply shows it's either dried up or contaminated. there is absolutely no visible reason for this. panic breaks out.
week 4, day 1, evening: crew members try to come to terms with their impending deaths. some are pretty calm about it. there are still fights sporadically breaking out but mostly it's just fucking sombre. dr. ravi eklund goes to the glaciology lab and starts cataloguing his research.
week 4, day 2, 5:40 am : dr. pradeep mishra starts to make everyone mugs of tea before remembering the water. he settles for handing out blankets to everyone who fell asleep in odd places instead.
week 4, day 2, 6:07 am: ravi throws away his fifth attempt at a goodbye letter for his former friends back home. there's no way for it to reach them anyway. they wouldn't want to hear from him if it did.
week 4, day 2, 7:00 am: it takes a few days to a week for a person to die of dehydration. ravi lies down in the glaciology lab and hopes it doesn't take him long.
week 4, day 4: everyone is severely dehydrated but so far, nobody has died. ravi leaves the glaciology lab. more crew members start to come across one another and realise they're still alive.
week 4, day 6: nobody is dead.
week 5: nobody is dead.
week 6, day 1: nobody is dead, and everyone's mouths are so dry they haven't even tried to speak in days. captain russell periodically sends out another distress signal with no hope that anyone will answer.
week 6, day 3: someone uses a tablet to write down what more of them have been thinking: this all started with dr. eklund and the bird.
week 6, day 5: maybe it's just dehydration... but people swear they're seeing things.
week 6, day 5?: ravi first sees the ghost of his dead best friend, dan.
week 6, day...6?: they hear things, too.
week 6, day???: ravi sits with the ghost. he isn't sure which one of them has been here longer.
week 7: nobody is dead, and nobody is coming for them.
week ???: there are shapes of monsters in the shadows. ghosts walk the halls. 200 crew members sit and wait to die. when they see each other, they can no longer tell if they're ghosts, too. some of them try fastidiously to keep a routine, some semblance of normalcy and reality, but even that is slipping. more and more of them just... stop.
week 8, maybe 9, maybe months and months and— pradeep mishra and ravi eklund sit on the observation deck and watch the stars. the shadows of creatures older and stranger than anything in their home galaxy float by above. they hold hands and sit shoulder to shoulder until they fall asleep.
week 8, or 9, some undetermined hours later: ravi wakes up. pradeep doesn't.
week— pradeep is dead. 198 other crew members are also dead.
week: day: year: dr. ravi eklund sits down among 200 corpses and ghosts, and prays to be next.

ravi and his best friend signed up for mission albatross together. like most things they did, it was dan's idea first, and ravi did it with him because his love language is "will follow you to the ends of the earth with moderate complaining".
technically they wouldn't be on the same parts of the mission; ravi was part of the team mapping the geography of the planets and dan would be with satellite mission control, but it still felt like something they were doing together. at least they'd get to be in contact the whole time, something that had been getting harder by the year since undergrad.
six months before they were supposed to leave, dan died in a mountaineering accident. ravi was there, along with three of their other friends. they did things like this often ( dan's idea, ravi's mostly good-natured griping about it ), always at least the two of them, usually the rest of their friend group, too. this was supposed to be their last big trip before they had to leave. together.
three of them, including ravi, were hospitalised with minor injuries. another friend had an extended stay in the icu. dan was pronounced dead at the scene, and there was an ugly fight in the hospital about whether he might have made it to the icu as well if they'd responded differently.
ravi maintains that he wouldn't, and maybe neither would the rest of them.
( you have to tell yourself that, right? better than admitting your best friend is dead because of—
it took two nurses and their remaining friend to break up the fight. )
if you asked, he wouldn't answer, but that's why he still went ahead and joined mission albatross in the end. that comment. that fight.
he'd been halfway through typing out his resignation email until it happened. how the hell was he supposed to do this without his best friend? he never would have done it alone.
well, it turns out the answer's simple: there's even less for him back home than there is in space.

vanya’s at a point where he actively discourages people from seeking jobs in law enforcement. for those already trapped in the web, he makes a point to sever all relationships that aren’t strictly professional and strongly advises them to do the same
the police aren’t your friends
interpol aren’t your friends
not only has working under rocco’s constant power abuse taken his already-present cynicism and dialed it up to a thousand, but he’s seen all of these regional catastrophes get dealt with by anyone but law enforcement. the corruption in these organisations runs so deep that villain team infiltration is the least of their problems

if you want justice, cool. fucking great. but to get anything done you have to lone wolf it and understand that every step will be an uphill battle

Adreffe and its relationship with Interpol.
Huge thank you to Marshii for talking through this with me last night, and thank you to @fallen-exalt for reminding me to write this up!
For the sake of brevity, what I’m going to be referring to as ‘Interpol’ includes all law enforcement, regardless of if they’re region-locked or internationally recognised.
While Adreffe isn’t praised for the skill of its staff (which they have no issue with - obviously a novice League is going to be significantly easier), something that has garnered a lot of attention is its unconditional safe haven policy. Anyone is allowed to seek redemption there, and as long as they make no attempts to harm any other island resident, they will be welcome to stay. This rule applies to petty criminals, those that might have been barred from their own regional Leagues due to disruptive behaviour or attempts to cheat, all the way upwards to prominent (and highly wanted) members of villainous teams.
It’s that latter part that’s caused quite a few clashes with Interpol, and the current relationship between them is tense at best.
Unlike in other regions, Adreffe has no divide between the Champion and government. There is no higher authority than whoever’s got the reigning title at the time, and so their word is law. If Siôn allows someone to remain in the region even after being made aware of their status as a wanted criminal, there’s nothing Interpol can do to forcibly remove the individual in question. That’d be a direct violation of the Champion’s judgement and would be a crime in and of itself.
The most Interpol can do is request that the wanted person is made aware of their presence and asked if they wish to cooperate with the police. If they choose not to cooperate and instead stay in Adreffe, there’s nothing more that can be done unless Siôn chooses to hand them over (something that would only be done if the individual was a serious threat to others’ safety). The more wanted people he shelters, the more Interpol gets frustrated with Adreffe’s policies and their lack of power to overrule them, and as that frustration grows Siôn’s own patience with them starts wearing thin. He’s a busy man, and he doesn’t want to waste time entertaining their inquiries when they all know what the end result is going to be.
There have been a few rare occasions where Galar and Kalos have been contacted in an attempt to overrule Adreffe’s judgement and force a change, with Siôn eventually getting called into meetings with their own governmental bodies, but he has never bent under these pressures. His region is an independent one despite its close geographical proximity to the aforementioned two, and it is under no obligation to heed others’ wants or demands.
Of course, back on home soil he keeps everything as democratic and transparent as possible. All staff are invited to frequent meet-ups to give everyone a chance to discuss how they think it would be best to address the situation, but it’s rare that anyone has much of an objection. They work on Adreffe fully aware of its welcome policies, and as long as the person is trying to improve then they see no reason to deny them that chance. People can’t be expected to get better if they’re never given a support network to help guide them.
This also ties into the ‘no questions asked’ policy in that while Adreffe is obligated to ask if the individual wishes to cooperate with Interpol and leave with them, there is no further attempt to pry for details or dig up information about the person. They don’t care who you were or what you did, the only thing that matters is who you are now. The only information they’ll keep on file is what the individual themselves tells them and the generic school notes every student gets, nothing more and nothing less.

@badmusejail asked: What are the police like in Adreffe? Are they diligent, or more lazy? By the book or more likely to let good intentions slide even if technically illegal? Is the force large or small? Does Interpol operate within the borders? Often? For what reasons?
Long story short, there are no traditional police forces in Adreffe. This includes Interpol, as they have been banned from entering and, should they attempt to circumvent this law, will be considered a threat to the region and dealt with accordingly. This has caused many clashes in the past, all of which have only worked to further sour Sion’s opinion of Interpol and the regional police departments.
The reason for this exclusion is simple: In a place heavily populated by wanted people and ex-villains, encouraging an official law enforcement presence would just be asking for conflict further down the line, not to mention such a move would likely drive away many people in need of Adreffe’s redemption services. So, rather than risk creating this conflict of interests, the region chose to enforce its own laws and security measures, rather than rely on traditional structures. Instead, the Champion is ultimately in charge of keeping the region’s residents safe and happy, and any legal conflict with Interpol becomes their responsibility to deal with.
Of course, Adreffe’s not a lawless land. It has security measures in place to protect sensitive information, and there are people the students can turn to if they have any concerns (bullying, lost property/theft, cheating), but for the most part any potential legal problems are judged by the reigning Champion. They alone have the power to forgive transgressions or push for more serious action to be taken, and so all serious cases (for example, violence towards a peer or pokemon) must be brought to their attention as quickly as possible.
But for the most part, as long as everyone is getting along and focusing on beating those Gyms, Adreffe is willing to forgive any and all past crimes they may have committed in other regions. That is what it means to be a region of unconditional redemption and ‘affiliation blindness’.

OVERVIEW. Teamea is the group of individuals referenced in this post. Together, they’re responsible for creating tiny, undetectable presences in each non-allied region and keep a careful watch for runaways or rumoured fugitives. They’re almost always used for helping ex-villain members or those that fallen hard out of public favour, but they’re willing to aid anyone who needs help getting out of a dangerous situation.
Discretion is paramount, so there’s no team uniform or shared identifiers. Most don’t even bother learning each other’s names and faces - it’s safer for everyone that way, should anything terrible happen. Members are expected to supply their own pokemon for the tracking and transporting processes, since catching a wild one would take up time they seriously can’t afford to waste, and (though this goes without saying) they have to be excellently trained.
PURPOSE. They exist solely to find and arrange an escape for wanted persons, preferably before law enforcement or their enemies do. As mentioned above, a tiny number of Teamea members exist in every region Adreffe isn’t currently allied with, and these people are expected to travel from town to town while on the lookout for people. There’s usually some gossip they can pick up on and investigate, and even dead-ends are useful practice for tracking someone down wihout drawing attention.
They’re the first to act whenever there’s news of a team disbanding or taking a serious defeat, and of course they have direct contact with Adreffe just in case someone reaches out first (as was the case with @risingxglory’s Vivian). By this point they’re masters in following someone’s trail, even if they don’t particularly want to be found, and most members have one or two specially-trained tracking pokemon to aid them with this task.
Now, finding people is a lot easier than actually helping them leave. Any sort of trackable public transport is out of the question, so they’re forced to rely on the speed and strength on their ride pokemon. This process has to be rushed or else they risk getting caught, so no time is left for final goodbyes or packed luggage. If there’s anything the wanted person desperately wanted to take with them, that should have been considered beforehand.
OVERSEAS RECEPTION. As expected, it’s not good. They’re working to actively undermine whatever law enforcement and judicial processes are in place internationally, so they’re seen as a group that seeks to spread chaos and create a lawless wasteland. Their desire to see people redeemed gets perceived as a wish to eliminate people from all consequences of their actions, and any members will face hefty criminal charges should they be caught.
Teamea makes a lot of enemies in a lot of regions.

100 DAYS OF HEADCANONS  /  LOYALTY
These will be completed out of order simply because I don’t vibe with the original list. You’re welcome to suggest prompts and/or muses, otherwise I’ll be doing them as inspiration strikes. The original post can be found here!
Today’s theme, as suggested by @veritychosen, is loyalty for Siôn!
Generally, when trying to form an impression of someone, Siôn considers the person first and their associated loyalties second.  People have their reasons for siding with who they do, and as long as they eventually regain sight of themselves and choose to improve, Siôn’ll be happy to offer them that chance. While he can’t entirely disregard someone’s current affiliations, and he certainly doesn’t believe said affiliations should be exempt from criticism, he does try and find the good qualities in people.
Most of this is admittedly the result of seeing so many ex-villains pass through the region. All of them pledged loyalty to terrible people at one time or another, have done awful things for the sake of furthering the cause or making their superiors proud, and yet there eventually came a time they were forced to reconsider that loyalty. They had to choose between helping themselves and helping the team, and they chose to cut ties and seek their own happiness instead. He knows it’ll be the same story for many people currently trapped in villainous teams, and he only hopes they’ll be able to make it out and get the life they deserve.
For the vast majority of his ex-villain students, he’ll never know the straw that broke the Numel’s back. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that they’re safe, they’re free, and they can finally start building a future they look forward to facing.

Cadmael is banned from all Galarian sporting tournaments. Leon made the mistake of inviting him to the first Star Tournament, and he made himself such an unlikeable, antagonistic prick that his invitation was revoked and he was permanently banned from all future events. Neither Siôn nor Leon were happy that such a drastic course of action had to be taken, and he was warned that any more displays of unprofessional conduct would force the League to reconsider his position as an Elite.
He’s still allowed to visit the region as a tourist, but any paid participation in battle-led competitions, their Gym Challenge, or the Battle Tower will be in direct conflict with the above decision and dealt with accordingly.

A little further note on successors!
Each muse has a pre-determined list of requirements that any hopeful successor must meet before they can even be considered for the position. This is usually related to personality and individual characteristics, but some demand a set level of training experience too. You can’t teach if you haven’t learned, you know?
But, individual differences aside, there are some universal requirements:
If you’re hired as a Gym Leader or Elite, you cannot hold League positions in any other regions. You can have secondary jobs (many people do, in fact!) but participation in two Leagues can risk conflicts of interest arising or unnecessary prioritisation of one region over another.
You must understand, agree with, and enforce the unconditional right to redemption. If you’ve got longterm grudges with Villain Team of the Year™ to the extent that you’d be unable to treat ex-members the same as a non-affiliated student or colleague, Adreffian teaching is not the job for you.
Related to the above: Interpol is not on pleasant terms with Adreffe, and any collusion will be cause for an immediate and unretractable ban. The continued safety of its students, criminal or otherwise, is treated with the utmost seriousness, and Interpol is a threat to that.
Your Gym Battles should be challenging while remaining equal to all others in the circuit. If the Leader before you has an ace fighting at Lv. 12, you can’t come out swinging with a Lv. 25. The learning curve has to be gradual, because the challenge is supposed to come from the student’s own inexperience and unfamiliarity with your chosen type or battle technique, not a massive difficulty spike.
If someone ticks all of these boxes, as well as the individual requirements for a given Gym, then they will be considered as a possible successor.

This is v much inspired by @soardived’s post, so thank you Nox for getting me thinking: If there was ever a power struggle within the Interpol Quartet, which given their constant tension is a possibility that gets likelier each day, it’d be settled through a free-for-all battle that Vanya would eventually win. Maximus would come second, Rocco would be third, and Chiyo would refuse to battle and come last by default.
Adreffe, meanwhile, has a nominated successor system because it’s only ever intended to be a lead-in to a Trainer’s journey to a stronger, more difficult League. It wouldn’t make sense to trap a student there as Champion every time they win, since their intention was merely to graduate the League and move on to other regions. Instead they allow a single individual to act as the final hurdle, giving the students one last test to prove their worth before they’re considered ready to move on.
