      the red sea’s corruption is absolute; or rather, it should be. 

      syake swears himself to the red sea, rejects the blue sea’s ideals &&. their beliefs, as he feels he’s been wronged by them &&. had everything taken away. while he had given himself willingly to those bloodied shores &&. accepted his prophecized title of ambassador, there had always remained a loose thread. with corruption &&. being reborn anew as ‘syakesan’, ‘manami’ had been considered long dead by syake himself. he would repress his past, hating every fiber of it, wishing it were gone &&. never existed --- the only thing he would hold onto was his jealousy, hatred, &&. bitterness that he had felt, as it had been his corruption’s fuel. 

       but being called by his past name will send him into shock. this manga panel &&. the focus on his eye always seemed strange to me, as did the colorization of his eye going from the red tint’s usual ‘grey’ to that sudden lighter shade. this only lead me to one conclusion: calling upon his past would have his old self fizzle in, in a way. his past self would start to bleed through again, if only sparingly --- but of course, syake hates that. he hates who he used to be. so naturally, he’ll only react violently in order to regain control &&. repress the memory once more: 

       he doesn’t want to be reminded. he doesn’t want to remember. manami is dead, &&. he shouldn’t be brought back.

★ these two are terribly similar in the most cursed vein ; where idate views sal as a stupid shark beneath him, sal views idate as a stupid orca beneath him. the more idate picks a fight and bullies, the more it reaffirms that for sal ; he views him as a rowdy toy of all things. he thinks it’s hilarious is the worst part --- mockingly so if anything. he’ll take beatings & taunt just for the sake of taunting ; that & both these assholes are fairly op & i can’t play that in a maf game seriously my dude. sacred sword? control over the denizens of the red sea at his fingertips? magic stat of fuckin’ 9999? i’m pretty afraid if these two genuinely went at it it’d be some dbz shit & constant winnings stalemates.

★ even if he has his fits of jealousy over things, what idate actually says to his face rarely phases him. if anyone knows something about trying to milk a reaction out of someone & manipulate to get their way, it is, regrettably, sal. he can admire in an attempt in the sense of it being funny, but stupid & boring by the end of the day. he’s well aware of what he has control over, & anything that tries to slip out from his claws, he knows he can drag right back.

★ the urge to corrupt him is for the sole sake of bragging. he doesn’t particularly care if idate is a member of his sea or not ; but the idea is a fun one, all so he can laugh over it & make it an example that no one is safe from the red sea’s twisted siren song. that & keeping him under his thumb ; power is a delicious thing that he likes to gorge himself on, & if he can have complete control over someone like idate, then hey.

★ in the case that he does ( because hello, my interest is highly piqued in that au you have ) then he’s outright giddy & smug over it. he likes breaking him, knowing his mind is rotten & dulled --- all so he can smother what once was under his shoe like dirt ; put him in his place, so to speak. often times he sends him out for tasks he can’t be bothered with but knows idate is suited for ; puts a hex on him to keep an eye on what he does, just to ensure that it gets done the way he wants. ...other times sal just uses him for a footstool.

★ arrogant in such a position sal may be, he’s no fool ; he keeps an eye on the orca for monitoring’s sake. he knows well enough what corruption & mistreatment can drive a soul to do, even in the red sea ; & he wouldn’t want any accidents. but he’s well-equipped for such and subduing if need be.

it is a known fact that neither samekichi nor sal / syakesan are the twin’s real names. while samekichi’s true name is supposedly minami ( from an image from DSP confirming that his son is named after him ) -- we are left to wonder what syake’s is. supposedly from another translation, it’s gathered that syake and samekichi were given distinctly similar names, as are they are twins.

where as minami means ‘ honorable wave’ ( 御波 ), i’ll be headcanoning that syake’s true name is manami, which means either ‘ love & affection + beautiful ‘ (  愛美 ) or ‘ love & affection + the sea ‘ ( 愛海 ) .

blue:

★ manami was the one to teach wadanohara how to waltz. it was an innocent enough question of, ‘ you don’t know how to dance? ’ behind a smile and a fond laugh in the midst of a conversation. it may have sent his heart into overdrive, but the experience is fondly remembered ; the shared laughter, smiles & even the missteps on toes will forever be cherished.

★ while he enjoys their piano duets immensely, as soon as wadanohara gifted him his violin, he took it upon himself to master it. the reason not only being his long-standing love of the instrument itself, but to show wadanohara how much it had meant to him, alongside being able to play further duets together. he has a favorite piece to play ( or hum, even ) when his mind is full of and missing her — schubert - serenade. 

★ manami’s depressive moods often lead him to distancing himself from others & being alone with his thoughts. he purposefully keeps away from those he cares about and brushes off their concerns under the guise of insisting he’s fine and simply needs some time to himself ; in these mindsets, he doesn’t do much beyond staring at the sea by himself and ponder. however, wadanohara is the one person that he will allow in his company and will open up to for support — or even so much as having a sense of comfort around him. her presence to him is light, warm ; enough to soothe his troubled heart.

★ wadanohara’s association with the moon is obvious to many ; manami is no different. upon finding a shard of moonstone, he recounted how it’s sheen, color & shimmer reminded him of her ; he keeps it on him always, carefully polished and fiddled with in his pocket when he thinks of her at times, or is particularly anxious ; the thought & tie it has to her easing his nerves. it eventually becomes a gift to her that he makes himself & she earns the pet name of, ‘ moonstone ‘ in verses where they get together.

★ when once spending time bird watching with wadanohara, manami took notice of her love of ducks. he found it endearing and it melted his heart to the core ; it also prompted a teasing, silly little nickname for her of, ‘ waddles. ‘ it seldom comes out, but when he feels particularly playful, he calls her it --- never meaning any harm, but just because her reaction to it is always adorable.

red:

★ sal’s love for wadanohara is true to it’s core ; he has always, & will always, love her & her alone. manami loves her --- & as much as he insists that side of him is ‘ long gone ‘ it lives on through a few things, & his love for her is one of them. it had always been his goal to make her happy --- & evidently, that continues on through sal. of course with his sway of the sea of death in his blood now, those means become more extreme ; turning her to his sea to show her ‘ true happiness ‘, killing those who dare to defy her, doing just about anything her wicked heart desires. in a sense, he worships her ; she is his everything, his soulmate ( so he believes ) ; she is his goddess & the queen of his heart. of course, that doesn’t mean he allows her to walk all over him --- far from. but her wishes are well-accommodated. after all, anything is possible if it’s for her.

★ his supply of pet names for her is in abundance, but pearl is a favorite ; while not only in reference to the ring he gifted to her, it is due to a pearl’s nature. she is rare, a beauty hidden in the depths of the red sea, once locked away behind the blue sea’s hardened shell. but he had opened it, drew her out, adored her. she is his greatest treasure ; irreplaceable.

★ he’s always been unabashedly enticed by the idea of marrying her ; despite being twisted now, his romanticisms are ever present. once turned into the red sea witch, her assurance that she loves him in return prompts him to insist that they be wed immediately ; after all, waiting so long to hear those words & knowing she’d meant them were enough grounds to propose the idea. never mind how much of a damn yandere he is. are they actually married? well, probably not legally ; but as far as sal is concerned, they are --- that ring he had given her even being so much as an engagement ring. if you don’t think sal had the most extra ceremony for it, then you don’t know sal very well at all.

★ despite how rough they can be with each other ( from the... references to bdsm to how they find fun in hurting each other / tearing each other apart due to certain moods ), sal is usually disgustingly affectionate & doting with her. kisses, cuddles, lovey dovey ways of speaking, grand gestures & displays of affection ; anything cheesy you can think of, sal goes about it. one specific instance is running --- as... unsettling as it is --- bubble baths for her of blood ( he insists it’s to keep her skin soft and purely white. she drinks blood anyway, it’s fine. ), complete with candles, incense & champagne / wine. he likes to spend time with her then, typically sitting on the edge of the tub ( although sometimes he joins her & sometimes he understands she enjoys ‘ alone time ‘ and leaves her be entirely, it’s extremely mood variant ) & running his fingers through her hair while idly talking to her & leaving her something out for her to wear ; it’s all to pamper her. 

★ sal has always been extremely loyal with his affections for wadanohara. according to dsp, people flirted with him when he was a member of uomi’s court & he was always insistent on liking someone else? despite his ever-burning jealousy, he knows that wadanohara is true to him in return ; he simply loathes the idea of anyone so much as trying to make a move on what belongs to him. he’s selfish & doesn’t share well ; a fact that he, regrettably, enjoys reminding her of. though --- the thought of losing her? absolutely crushing, & not something he intends to see happen.

sal has always had a particular gravitation towards suits. they look professional, clean-cut, and respectable. it seems that he has always had a certain style even since he had been a member of the blue sea ; it’s a common fashionable cut that accentuates and helps broaden his shoulders, while pinching in and narrowing down his waist. the power in such a shape of his figure didn’t settle in until the red sea — there, he is aware that his stature emits an aura of power, of superiority, and expresses his status as the ambassador. psychologically, it does him a favor.

notch & peak lapels depend on the suit ; vents aren’t without consideration, especially with the ease that they give to his tail. they’re typically well tailored and fit nicely. 

colors aren’t too vast ; he stays true to neutrals ( beige, creams, browns, tans, etc. when it’s the blue sea / black, grey, charcoals and whites when it’s the red sea ) and colors associated with what sea he aligns with. 

accessories? he’s for them. ties range from narrow (2.5″) to standard (3″) length ; his gloves are an obvious one to note, too. is he the type of man to wear cuff links? he is indeed. if there’s a symbol for the sea of death, it’s immortalized in silver cuff links he wears. he is proud of his sea, and takes no hesitance in showing it.

tl;dr sal is a fashionable motherfucker. this boy wears nail polish in the blue sea au, and that’s extremely trendy for young men in japan and that, honestly, truly, fucks with me.

i. sal enjoys classical music, but particularly piano and violin pieces. when still a denizen of the blue sea, he had the desire to learn how to play ; the piano, he learned, but the violin he did not. the former is particularly soothing to him – i wonder why?

ii. he can dance to a degree ; his forte is ballroom and specifically the waltz. 

iii. due to being well, you know, a shark, sal has an acute sense of smell. in particular, he is able to smell blood from afar ; it is a scent that immediately attracts his attention. while it does not send him into a frenzy, so to speak, it spikes his excitement and feeds into his sadistic, violent nature.

iv. sal has an extremely high pain tolerance ; he rarely budges against inflicted pain, as evident through his battles with wadanohara. he will most likely take hits to taunt you ; to show that he is not so easy to kill, that you are just a toy to him. even if you injure him, he mocks you ; expresses that their handiwork is bottom of the barrel, he hardly felt anything, is that the best they can do? he seldom takes it very seriously, and will use that mental griefing to his advantage and crack down on his opponent that way, make them fragile and frustrated and an easier target. it’s a game to him.

v. the oddest thing about him is that he smells like vanilla. ….. with a hint of blood underneath it.

★ kahra is the only one manami can go to over certain issues — all pertaining to, you guessed it, his feelings regarding wadanohara & even anything troubling regarding his brother. she is a third party, a true neutral without a true bias ; he trusts her immensely for that, & often goes to her seeking advice on what to do in a situation. he’s grateful for her help, as she tends to give clarity regarding a situation. there are of course, times where he simply goes to her for much more innocent things — despite being a serial romantic, he enjoys a second opinion, & tends to ask if she thinks something he’s doing for wadanohara ( whether it be a physical gift or a gesture ) is overboard or something she 100% would like.

★ regardless of her tough girl persona & her stance as ‘ big sister ‘, manami is protective of her as well. he often worries when she heads out for training & tends to slip her supplies to nurse her wounds before she heads off, as his healing magic is nowhere near the level of wadanohara’s. if she comes back particularly brutalized, he ends up scolding her & insists she be more careful — they wouldn’t be a family without her.

★ at some point, manami had his voice half in his throat about asking her for some training. he hated being physically ‘ weak ’, & while proficient in magic ( essentially the team’s glass canon ), he wanted to do more to protect those he cared for beyond spells.  at the very least, he wanted some strength — he had already been quick on his feet, but knew that wouldn’t grant him what he wanted. she, being well-versed in weaponry & physical combat, was his go-to.

★ both parties have found the other doing something the other deemed embarrassing ; kahra, with her teeth wedged into food he had given her after she had gotten a little too excited, & manami, who had been caught in the midst of trying to write a song for wadanohara. despite how both situations were laughably endearing, they take those secrets buried in the deep blue.

red:

★ sal finds kahra’s resolve stupid & worthless ; protecting wadanohara from him? unnecessary, he insists ; she’ll be happy with him. after all, they love each other so much. she said so herself — kahra is clearly just trying to get in the way of that, he says. trying to save him? he doesn’t want to be saved — he makes a point of pressing on about how much happier he is like this, how he would have never been this joyful if he had remained who he was.

★ he persists on calling her ‘ oneechan ‘ when confronting her — it’s dragged out by it’s vowels, put in the most warped, falsely-sweet, mocking tone he can manage. it’s to hold how much she cared for him over her head, to invoke negative feelings in her ; what better way to corrupt someone than shattering them, especially through the memories they once had of you?

★ when she does become corrupted, his immediate feelings are regret & agitation ; her insistence on cucking & cockblocking him with wadanohara drive him up a wall, & i don’t doubt that it has turned into them getting into fights — or even sal killing her over it to prove that she shouldn’t ‘ try to get in-between him & his beloved ‘. eventually those feelings quiet as they take on their roles of the red sea ;  sal, their ambassador, & kahra, their assassin. having control over the denizens of the red sea leaves kahra to report to him, & he gives her tasks he’s sure she can carry out with efficiency, rewarding her with weapons forged of the sea of death itself ; powerful ( though not enough to kill those of their sea as the sacred sword is able to, but they’re great murder weapons for any other sea ) & hexed with the virus of corruption. 

★on sal’s chessboard, those of the former group have their respective pieces. kahra is represented by the knight.

blue:

★ as male sharks tend to have multiple mates, manami ( sal ) & minami ( samekichi ) have two separate mothers. manami was closest to his own mother, who had been ill & sickly ; minami had been close to his own as well, but due to spending a long while around manami’s mother ( as his own was her caretaker & sister ), became attached to her as well. when she passed, manami was shattered emotionally & kept his distance away from minami, unable to cope at such a young age. this drove a wedge between the two brothers.

★ the brothers shared a general sense of protectiveness over each other — minami over manami’s physically weak state, & manami over minami’s emotional well being. if you mess with one brother, chances are, you’ll end up having the other on your ass for dare trying to hurt their family.

★ manami makes a point of encouraging minami to chew his food more often than naught. the amount of times he had to smack his back in order to get him to spit out something he figured wasn’t worth chewing is lost on both hands. it had gotten to the point where, when cooking, manami would slice / dice minami’s food into edible bites or smaller portions so that he could swallow it / chew as minimally as possible with no trouble. applesauce is in high supply in their household. the applesauce market is skyrocketing all out of manami’s pocket.

★ in the shark week au, an older manami is prone to poking fun at him & generally being a playful pain in the ass, as some brothers tend to do. has manami absolutely leaned all his weight onto minami and insisted that gravity is pulling him down, just to knock minami over? absolutely.

red:

★manami’s hatred & jealousy of minami ( alongside his hatred of the blue sea ; he believed it was unfair & unjust with how the blue sea dealt with emotions & how the world had robbed him of his mother ) fueled his eventual corruption. the red sea’s influence fed into those emotions, amplified them ; it promised him it would be happy, that there would be no more pain & suffering. he hated everything about minami ; hated how much he looked like him, hated how, as far as he knew, minami’s mother wasn’t dead or totally lost, he could still reconcile with her someday — he hated & envied that minami wasn’t alone, that minami didn’t have to suffer like he did, & he hated minami’s love for wadanohara.

★ whether sal spared samekichi’s in an unnamed instance prior to the old sea was out of pure pity or because it was a technical advantage was unclear ; a small part of him, the last shred that still remained of manami within him, couldn’t bear to kill his own brother. of course, the cruelty of the red sea saw it as idiotic & weak-willed ; so he ruined it, made the worst of it — figured he’d best leave samekichi to suffer as he did. alone. he wanted to make him feel the pain he had felt, to crush him, to gradually destroy him emotionally. he wouldn’t make that same mistake again.

★ in normal ending one, he keeps samekichi alive in the cell just to rub his victory in his face. whatever boiling negative emotions he held for him over the centuries are released here ; taunting, bragging & physical abuse aren’t out of the question. it’s a way for him to vent his frustration & hatred ; allowing him to become corrupt & become a denizen of his sea? possible ; but he wouldn’t live a happy life. sal would assure he’d get the bottom of the barrel.

★ while they were aware of each other’s presences in the blue sea for some time, sal would be extremely stand offish in private towards samekichi. he had no intention of speaking to him ; but in the graces of others, he treated him as his persona would anyone ; friendly, cheery, amiable & expressing care for him like good ol’ lovable sal did. he even tacked on a -kun to his name, just to smother it in & make samekichi squirm.
