The good place finale really just looked at Micheal, Janet and Tahani and said “yeahhhh all your friends literally don’t exist and are the voice in people’s heads now, but the good news is you get to spend the rest of eternity designing and making peoples afterlives better for the time that they are here :))”

ART HAS BEEN MADE
Tumblr media
[ID: traditional fan art of NBC’s The good place. In the center of the image is a blue couch seen in several posters for the show, painted with guash. At the center of the couch are the words “whenever you’re ready” that come from the title of the series finale. surrounding the couch is a gradient of yellow, orange, red, and green; colored with oil pastels. At the bottom of the gradient, on a white paper background, (from left to right) is a paper clip, a piece of shrimp, a book with the title “what we owe to each other”, a diamond, a Molotov cocktail, and a cactus in a pot. /end ID]

How the good place characters would react to being asked what there pronouns are (spoilers kind of, idk i wouldnt read this if you havent finished the first season):
Eleanor:
I never really thought about my pronouns, ive always used she/her so thats fine, they/them is also fine, honestly you could use any pronouns and I wouldn’t be mad
Jason:
Whats a pronoun?
Tahani:
Oh darling i use the feminine pronouns : she/her/hers
Chidi:
Obviously since we are speaking in English you would use he/him/his pronouns but ive never really gotten asked this question so ive never really thought about it i mean ive used he/him all my life and have never really had an issue with it but what if i was brainwashed by our cis-normative misogynistic society and i never felt comfortable enough in myself to further explore my identity it’s possible. Why am i even freaking out about this I mean gender is a concept constructed by society mainly to oppress women, im I subscribing to the patriarchy by making such a big deal out of such simple terms. No no pronouns are huge for so many people who don’t identity as their birth sex and they are used as a tool to misgender and oppress the trans and non binary community but im I also offending them in some way by making such a big deal out of this question. I- um i dont know, uh um ah-
Janet:
Good question! Well given my appearance as a white lady it might be your first impulse to use she/her/hers pronouns, but i however im not a lady because i am not human and therefore the human concept of gender does not apply to me. I am simply a vessel containing all the knowledge in the universe so it would be way more accurate to use they/them/theirs pronouns when referring to me or just use my name, Janet :)
Micheal:
Well you see fire squids do not have pronouns, we refer to eachother in a series of sounds incomprehensible to the primitive human mind but given my human suit is that of a male it would probably be best to use the masculine pronouns he/him/his for me
(i am very proud of this)

In The Good Place, Shawn never believed that Micheal could get the humans to torture each other, saying that his plan would fail.
But in the third season (or something, all episodes have blended together at this point), Shawn sent specific humans from the bad place into the experiment to make the experiment fail. That is, he assumes that these new peoples existence would ‘torture’ team cockroach, and team cockroach would be loosing their shit constantly at the people in the new experiment.
So, in doing this, didn’t he hypocritically assume that Michael was right - that you can get people to torture each other if chosen correctly - or am I just reading into this too much?

"Everyone is out here trying explain that Earth isn’t hell. I beg to differ. If there is a God (I don’t believe that there is or isn’t, but if there is) and He/She/They are as benevolent and gracious as the religions of the world claim, then would the Supreme Being be too kind to make hell a place of complete torture? If God loves us so much and is so perfect, he wouldn’t even be able to bear sending those of us who deserve torture to a place where that would truly happen. He would send us to a place where we could try to learn from our actions and grow. A place we could stay forever if we never grew at all.
What if instead of fire and brimstone, he sends us here, to a place where we are constantly surrounded by amazing things that we can attain if we overcome our “flaws”, which very few people manage to actually achieve. I like to think of Earth as a prison with an exceptional reform program. Once we learn to overcome our souls ugliest aspects and ascend to a level in which we are able to lead respectable lives that make us truly happy (this doesn’t always mean riches), then we will be free to move on.
Think about it. Some believe that we are reincarnated. That would make total sense for a hell or prison. Until your soul reaches a higher level, you’re doomed to repeat your existence on a plane in which you have no control of when you are born or when you die (to an extent), who you will love, where you’ll live or even if you will be healthy. All of these inconveniences could be considered manifestations of our own personal punishment in this hell.
We are all given faults that seem tailored to make our specific personality type miserable. Think about it. The child who doesn’t receive enough attention may become a narcissist and overly confident. The child who was constantly praised may become self critical and feels like a fraud. Even the child with a perfect upbringing could start to loathe themselves for feeling any negative emotions when they had a great childhood, deeming their feelings invalid.
We are all fundamentally broken with no full proof guide on how to fix ourselves, and that is why this is hell. This is why it’s so hard to become one of those few people who truly change the world for the better on a global scale. I mean, what better way to punish us than to put us on a planet where we have little to no control over anything, and then tell us we should be able to control everything in our lives? It’s basically set up to make us feel bad about ourselves.
I mean, on this planet there’s the idea that there is no one to blame but ourselves for our own suffering, so we wind up punishing ourselves and each other, and that seems like the most sophisticated version of hell a truly mighty God could create, a real mastermind. God doesn’t even have to get involved because we do all the work for Him/Her/Them.
It’s only been getting worse as time goes on now with social media and the ability to perceive everyone else as being more in control of their lives than we are. This only solidifies the idea that we are incompetent and stunts our will to continue trying to get better because a lot of us feel like we’ll never be as good as those other people online. Instead of focusing on our own growth, we focus on trying to be like the people we perceive as better than us, and as a result nothing truly novel has been produced from this Earth in a long, long time.
That is hell to me. The idea that it would be obvious torture and hell-flames is actually a bit insulting to the complexity of whatever Creator there may be. In fact, this planet was once hot and full of lava and fire. Perhaps it started out as the traditional hell we read about in books, but has evolved over time just like everything else in this realm. I honestly don’t care. If it is hell, then obviously I belong here for some reason and I’m here to learn.
And the good news is, the only way to go from here is up." - Bloom Anderson on Quora
👆 This is an answer to a query that was on the lines of 'what if earth is hell?'. I want to believe in this rather than all the other ideas that exist of hell. This is what the Bad Place in The Good Place evolves to in the end(spoiler bit there. Sorry!). A place where you can improve yourself rather than the obvious torture. It makes a lot of sense to me.

The reason why the Good Place wins my heart for one of the best shows is the characters. You see them grow, and episode by episode you just can’t help to root for them. You want all of them to get to their good place. And when they’re ready to go, it’s bittersweet.
