Winter had been long and bleak in Brindleton Bay. At least it had for Yusun. She didn’t venture out much. The air was too frozen, everything too slushy and wet. She had grown tired of her routine. Heck, she had grown tired of herself!
Bas had been a life saver. She truly believed someone was watching out for her when she found this place to live, with this gentle man as her landlord. He was so much more than that. He was her true friend. He would take Kallum out on snowy days and build snow pals with him, teaching him how to pack the snow in just the right way. He would take him on long walks with Tequila keeping watch, wearing him out so Yusun could get more work done. He never complained or tired of Kallum visiting him in the flower shop. He never roused when Kallum pulled at the flowers or interrupted his customers.
Yusun sometimes thought of telling Bas the truth about herself but then she would have nightmares of Worm standing by her bed or chasing down Farah and she would change her mind. It was better this way. The less Bas knew, the safer he would be.
Spring had taken its time but finally the days were growing warmer, the smell of jasmine wafting through the windows while Yusun worked. She looked forward to finishing work, collecting Kallum from day care and soaking up some afternoon sun.
Recently she had made an important decision. She had decided to change her perspective after many months of restless despair. It was time to make the most of her situation. No more ruminating. She was done.
This time wouldn't last forever. She would find things to look forward to. Brindleton Bay had wonderful seasons. She would enjoy them to the full. That meant beach days and picnics, BBQs and campfires. Whatever was to come she wanted to look back at these days, not as a depressing interlude but as a time of untroubled waiting. She would not live in fear but in hope.
Her sister would come home one day.
In her heart Yusun knew this to be true. And she wanted her to come home to joyful gratitude, not grief. And to a content and happy son.
This was the new agreement she had made with herself, and she had every intention of keeping it, no matter what it took or how difficult it might become. This change in attitude brought a new peace to Yusun’s mind and an unexpected bonus.
A calmer, more cooperative, Kallum.
