Lily, Severus, Dorcas and Regulus HCs
Lily Evans
Felt insecure about being a muggle-born witch
Biggest feminist you’ll meet
Was so proud about making head girl that she cried
Was like the Hermoine Granger of the Marauders
Loves hot chocolate during the cold, doesn't like marshmallows in it though
Tells people off any chance
Jealous about how transfiguration was so easy for James and Sirius
Her parent’s love for flowers passed onto her
Stubborn about everything
It was hard for her most years with being muggle-born
Her relationship with Severus is something she holds dear
Stood in voldemort’s face, not scared or worried for herself, but for her son, was ready to live or die with bravery
The word “mudblood” breaks her almost every time she hears it, has deep trauma from it
Neat freak
Lily going more into the world of magic caused a rift between her and Petunia, Lily got most of the attention and admiration
Obsessively determined
Before Lily died, she placed a protection spell on Harry, causing the killing curse not to work on him, only hurting him(it would be long term, saving him the second time)
Was a mentee to Flitwick and he pushed her to join the Ministry and join the Charms department
Potions and charms was her best subjects(even the teachers were shocked and some jealous)
Did everything she could to mend her relationship with Petunia but she never let up, Petunia regretted it after Lily died
Her, Dorcas and Marlene were in love in fashion and would hang out with Pansy Parkinson’s father Percival from time to time since the Parkinsons were a family of fashion
Thinks that she would have ended up with Severus if James wasn’t in the picture
Often scolds James for being so cruel
Severus Snape
Very shy and introvert around everyone but Lily helped him open up
Isn't the most athletic so he became a huge sports nerd, he does love it of course(only thing he about James that he likes is that he is sporty)
Very intent on strategy
Snape is very good friends with Mcgonagall(my personal headcanon is that she knew he wasn't truly helping the death eaters)
Used to be colorblind
Hates alcoholism
Only person who believed his dad could sober up, and he was right
Keeps a maintained life in the muggle world because he always feared that he might stray away from magic one day
Gets lost in lily’s eyes sometimes
Always go to him and Lily’s spot at hogwarts, even after she died
Grew to love gardening, him and lily planted many flowers at their spot
Snape hated almost all the other Slytherins, except Andromeda
Kids 10 and under disgust him
Everyone thought snape was just calm and sweet
Acts like he hates pizza but will devour one if he’s alone
Secretly had a pet bat in his 2-3 year
Uses too much pomade
Loves isolation
When he was younger, he loved art, and would also try it, but he wasn’t the best and his father bullied him about it when he was still an alcoholic, causing him to stop and hate art
Stop making potions and charms for a time after Lily’s death due to his depression
Secretly love cheap romance novels
Dorcas Meadowes
Nature girlie
Kind of a it-girl, most people likes her, no matter what house they’re in but she doesn’t really like people in vice versa
Her and Barty are a dynamic duo(if it's not Her and marlene or him and Evan)
Tries to stay connected to traditional magic as much as she can
Keeps Marlene on a leash
Loves coffee shops trips with Remus
Resting bitch face but is truly an angel
Teachers often worried that the dark order would seek her out for her powerful connection to pure and traditional magic
Taught Evan many spells he ended up using against the “good guys”
Steals marlene’s jackets and hoodies
Sometimes wishes she was in slytherin
Tried to crush on Remus to hide her feelings for Marlene
Forces the marauders and valkyries to have group reading time
Dorcas loves cold weather, specifically Autumn
Mints and blackberries are her absolute favorite
Green is her everything
Wanted to be a fashion designer before she died
Loves shoes so much
Greek mythology is one of her obsessions
One of slughorn’s favorite students
Snorts when she laughs
Fierce(we should all know this DIVA)
Regulus Black
Always admired James, had a big crush on him for the longest
Bossy
The baby of the Black siblings(Bellatrix, SIrius, Narcissa, Andromeda and Regulus)
Stayed with James along with Sirius for 3 months after running away from home
Hid his abuse from everyone until James found out during their 5th year
Had bad shakes after horrifying nightmares(got this from isabel-lillah on tumblr)
Loves being the the astronomy tower at night or when its raining
Before attempting to destroy the horcrux, he obliviated James in his sleep, it didn't work(got this from isabel-lillah on tumblr as well)
Before Regulus and Sirius drifted apart, they would would purposely annoy each other, it was their love language
(this might be dark) While regulus was drowning he cried out for James and Sirius and the last thing he thought about was him and James kissing for the first time
Guarded person
Doesn’t mean to be mean, it just happens
Overthinking is his specialty
Very insecure, especially about his physical appearance
Observes everything, he knows more about everyone else then he does about himself
His mental health is what caused Tom RIddle to manipulate him easily
Has daydreams of being what he thinks is “normal” which is being happy, confident, and outgoing
Love Quidditch, it's like a tie to his “normal life”
Never concerned himself with relationships or a sex life
Sub(there's nothing more to it)

Slightly off topic - but i love yapping B^) Sirius' comment on Severus knowing 'more curses than seventh years' when he was a first year is just such fucking bullshit Delicious bullshit. It says far more about Sirius than it does Severus.
I don't think he was even being serious when he said it. If asked for more information, I think Sirius would have said: "Well... maybe not actual curses... but he was a violent little git. One wrong look and you'd have a branch drop on your head."
Because where the hell would he be learning curses from...? Enough to beat seventh year Slytherin's with Death Eater parents? Without a wand? Without money? In a Muggle town? With a mother who couldn't/didn't defend them from her husband? I think Severus would have shot some curses at his dad if he could.
Luckily, we DO see Severus perform a little magic pre-wand:
“What is that you’re wearing, anyway?” she said, pointing at Snape’s chest. “Your mum’s blouse?” There was a crack. A branch over Petunia’s head had fallen. Lily screamed. The branch caught Petunia on the shoulder, and she staggered backward and burst into tears. “Tuney!” But Petunia was running away. Lily rounded on Snape. “Did you make that happen?” “No.” He looked both defiant and scared. “You did!” She was backing away from him. “You did! You hurt her!” “No – no, I didn’t!” But the lie did not convince Lily. After one last burning look, she ran from the little thicket, off after her sister, and Snape looked miserable and confused…
(DH ch 33)
This is rather clearly a boy who knew he did do it but didn't mean to.He was teased and his magic reacted in his defense, in his anger - accidental magic, like Harry blowing up his aunt or vanishing the glass in the zoo. He is just used to having to defend himself.
But what does Sirius see...? A boy who wanted to be in Slytherin. Who instinctively reacts with violence. Who eventually got interested in the Dark Arts.
Sirius isn't an idiot. He knows the difference between a curse and accidental magic. He knows Severus wasn't a walking curse library. Especially not compared to HIM, a boy likely raised encouraged to learn at least a little, with books and tutors.
But where Sirius and Severus differ - is that Sirius was always intentional with his attacks. Righteous. Fighting against what was bad, helping those who were good. At least that's how he saw it.
Sirius and James can pull whatever hex or curse they want out of their back pocket, illegal or otherwise, because they are good people. So 'good' that Sirius was the black sheep in his family.
Severus? He lashed out. He WANTED to be a Slytherin. He isn't even TRYING to be good, skulking about with creeps... Maybe he didn't know any curses in first year, but he would have liked to - and only for 'wrong' reasons... like hurting his Muggle dad or something...
…
Dayum.

this isn't my best work, but it's still pretty good for something i wrote when i was 15 after having a half a year of writer's block. anyways, ahem, presenting the fic in which severus says fuck it after the lake incident and just doesn't go back to hogwarts but potentially gets dragged into the war anyway despite living in the muggle world for like,, three years, part 1 (aka the only chapter i wrote bc my writer's block came back oops):
It starts simply, like most things do. It starts with a few words, tossed out without care and full of childish conviction. It escalates to brawls in the corridors and duels in the dungeons--if you could even call them that when it was four-on-one and most encounters left him reeling. It continues until he's twitchy and hypervigilant and awkward, always on the lookout for an attack, ready to bite before anyone could bite him.
It ends much the same. The events leading up to this are a production fit for the theatre, if the crowd is anything to by, but the ending itself is quite simple. Gasping for air near the shore of the Black Lake and battling a headache that hurts almost as much as the sharp press of his heart at the thought of what he'd done to Lily, he simply gives up. He picks himself up, tells himself this is the end of it and goes about collecting his belongings.
His wand comes to his hand easily enough with a mumbled Accio. His bag does, as well. Its contents, on the other hand, have to be collected by hand. His textbooks and ink are strewn beneath the tree, mostly, but the loose parchment and his quill are lost to the wind. He snatches up what he can find before someone gets it into their head to come further humiliate him and turns to head back into into the castle. Only to be smacked in the face by a bound sheaf of parchment and a quill. It's suspicious, and he's tempted to burn it then and there. It's his, but they were definitely scattered about the grounds two seconds ago. He doesn't burn it. He hesitates, puts it in his bag and returns to the castle, intent on making his way to Gryffindor Tower.
The apology doesn't go well. Lily isn't interested, refuses to hear it. He returns to the Slytherin dorms, drops into his bed and thanks Merlin that they'll be going home soon. Cokeworth is God-awful, but at least there's only one man trying to kill him there and only one woman for him to disappoint.
So, he waits it out. Spends his final classes looking over his shoulder and staring blankly at his parchment every time he remembers that they tried to kill him and they humiliated him and they got away with both. He shrinks into himself, avoiding the corridors at all costs, skipping meals to avoid being in the Great Hall and spends as much time as possible in the Library and the dusty old Potions Lab on the Fourth Floor that no one knows about, losing himself in research so he doesn't have to interact with his Housemates. He sits alone at the Leaving Feast, refuses to touch his plate until Evan Rosier falls into the seat next to him and bothers him into eating. The Headmaster dismisses them, says that they'll see each other come September and lets them filter out onto the train.
He ends up sharing a compartment with Mulciber, Avery and Rosier even though he's barely spoken to any of them since the incident. Evan needles him about everything and nothing the whole way to King's Cross, and when they get there, Evan claps him on shoulder and that's goodbye.
He gathers up his things, goes to meet his mother so they can Apparate home and not waste what little money they have on transport. Eileen's cheeks are sunken, her arms rail thin, her dress loose-fitting. He'd still rather see her than anyone even loosely affiliated with Hogwarts. She nods at him, he nods back. They go home.
He spends his summer making himself useful. He does odd jobs for the neighbours, is grudgingly polite to his father, takes care of his mother. By the time term rolls around, people are talking about that Snape boy. Strange, and quiet, too, but he works well, doesn't he? September first dawns bright and early, and Severus doesn't go back to Hogwarts.
He studies at home instead, nose buried in his mum's old books. He plants the few ingredients he has hidden away in his trunk at the back of the house and uses what grows to brew medicines and weedkillers and anything he can think of after experimenting a bit. Mr. and Mrs. Smith down the street both swear up and down he's working magic on their little garden and their old bones.
He feeds cats, delivers packages for the grocer, takes tables and nightstands home to cast Reparo on. Someone tells the pub owner about him, and the next thing he knows, he's frying chips and learning how to mix drinks even though the most complicated thing anyone ever orders is a pint of the beer that they have on tap.
It's not a bad existence. Eventually, slowly, his mother starts coming back to herself. She takes over the brewing when he isn't around. Annotates his annotations and even makes a trip to Diagon Alley for more ingredients to add to their garden when Severus forgets to write Narcissa to ask her to send a few more.
Severus is old enough now to drag his father home from the pub behind him when he's done working. One evening, they come home and Tobias nearly trips over the end table that Severus is meant to be fixing for Mr. Williams three houses up. Severus works his wand out of his boot and goes to cast a spell, but Tobias grumbles and bats his hand away. Drunk as he is, he still digs out his toolbox and gets to work. The job turns out almost decent.
By December, Severus is at the pub, feeding cats on his break and making deliveries when he has the time. Eileen is brewing and Tobias is doing carpenter's work fixing and building wardrobes, cupboards, cabinets and everything else. It keeps him busy enough that some days he doesn't see a drink at all. It's not much, but there's a little food on the table at the end of each day, and Severus thinks that he's probably better off than he would have been at Hogwarts.
Sometime around Christmas, his mother talks him into getting a Muggle education and writing his NEWTs. He writes the O-Levels for his Muggle exams in January. They're a breeze, given how well-read he is. He sees Petunia at the store shortly after, and she sneers vaguely in his direction. He hears her condescending voice in the back of his head and decides to sit the A-Levels in May out of spite.
His birthday comes and goes, the NEWTs come right after and he aces each and every one of the written exams. The practicals are spread out across the following weeks, and he's leaving the Ministry after his last exam to find that the date coincides with that of a field trip for the Sixth Years at Hogwarts.
He watches them a little, tearing his gaze away after he catches sight of a tanned arm draped over a shoulder touched by a red braid. The students mill near the doors for a while and so, Severus looks around for escape routes, eyes skipping hurriedly from door to door until they rest on a Ravenclaw who'd also taken the January NEWTs. All kinds of people had been there, adults who hadn't passed when they were younger and needed to retake the exams to get jobs, teenagers who had family fortunes waiting for them whose parents wanted them to at least look like they were competent, and overachievers--like Severus assumed the Ravenclaw was--who wanted to know where they stood before the actual exam. He jerks his chin toward another door, this one proclaiming to lead to the "Apparition Division". Severus nods once at him and makes his way toward it.
There's a one-day course for Apparition, apparently. The woman at the receptionist desk doesn't even bother looking at him, just points him in the direction of the Training Room with her nail file. He stays for nearly the rest of the day, until they're finally done. He gets his license and is quietly pleased to see that the building is nearly devoid of life when he leaves. He goes home.
May and June come around and bring with them the A-Levels. He finds them only marginally more challenging than his O-Levels and returns to his routine. It's a nice routine, which takes him all the way through to July of the next year when Lily starts coming in with Black and Potter and Pettigrew and Lupin. The first time it happens, he leaves the counter so fast that the patron he'd just given a glass of water to is convinced he teleported. He's already taken his regular break to go feed Mrs. Jones' cats, so he steps into the kitchen and tells Jimmy he's taking a smoke break. Jimmy snorts and reminds him that he doesn't smoke.
He fidgets, trying to think up a way to avoid going back out, when the ruckus they're making makes Jimmy look through the little window and see the lot of them crowded around a little table. He gets a peculiar look on face for a bit, before he asks Severus if they have something to do with why he doesn't go to his fancy school anymore. He doesn't need an answer, just tells him to keep an eye on the food and steps out to man the counter. Severus stays late, frying chips and washing dishes until the early hours of the morning when Jimmy pats him on the back and kicks him out.
It keeps up until September comes around, and by then, Severus has taken so many smoke breaks that he's actually started smoking. He keeps smoking long after they're gone.
He goes back to his routine until it's broken again by a letter that comes by owl. It's a short letter, coming from a Potions Master whose apprentice had been overseeing the exams. It claims that his work was the best either of them had seen in years and after asking around, they'd found that he was unbound to any Master and was highly recommended by the Malfoys. It ends with an offer. Severus would think himself foolish not to accept, so, he does. After that, two days a week are dedicated to Flooing to Master Diogene's laboratory to fulfil the requirements of his apprenticeship. It finds its own little nook in his routine and so he continues until June of 1980.
He's preparing to go to the pub when there's a knock at the door. It's not so uncommon anymore, so he thinks nothing of it, only that he hopes it doesn't take too long. His shift starts in half an hour. He pushes his shirt sleeves up to his elbows, where they perpetually are these days, and decides he'll roll them up properly later. He opens the door.
"Good afternoon," a very pregnant Lily says, and standing next to her is the Ravenclaw from the Ministry, back straight, arms clasped behind his back, his entire being alert.
"Good afternoon," he replies, awkward. After a long moment of silence, he asks, "Can I help you?"
"Depends on whether or not you let us in," she says.
Wordlessly, he steps aside, sliding the three pairs of shoes nearer to the wall in order to let them pass. "Do you want tea?"
"No," she says, at the exact same time her Auror friend says, "Thank you."
He gestures them into the little kitchen, where they sit at the little table where he and his mother and his father take their meals. He tugs his wand out of his boot, flicks it so that the cauldron bubbling away on the stove scoots aside but doesn't spill. The burner beneath lights on its own. He puts the kettle, already full, on to boil. "So," he begins, absentmindedly rolling up his sleeves. "Is there something you need from me?"
Lily smiles, strained. "Can't I just visit an old friend?"
"Sure," he says, quietly. "You made it very clear that you would prefer if we weren't, though."
Her expression twists. "And with good reason," she grits.
He says nothing. The kettle whistles. He searches for the boxes of tea, sets about mixing two cups of mint. He puts them both on a tray with milk and sugar, as well as the small container of honey kept for special occasions. He puts it on the table.
"I'm sorry."
She doesn't say anything, just watches him with bright, green eyes aflame with old anger. She picks up one of the teacups and starts doctoring it to her liking. Her Auror friend follows suit. It really is obvious, Severus thinks, watching the man scan the room from top to bottom, corner to corner. He sighs. "Why are you here, Lily?"
She glares at her tea. The Auror shifts uncomfortably. Severus sighs again. "You know, when people visit old friends, they usually don't bring Aurors with them."
"Trainee, actually. This is my last year." He grins sheepishly. "That obvious?"
Severus nods.
He leans over the table, stretches out a hand. His right, Severus notices. He leans over and shakes with his left.
"Kingsley Shacklebolt," the Auror trainee introduces himself.
"Severus Snape, but you already knew that."
"Ah, yes. Of course."
Lily continues to glare at her tea. Shacklebolt fidgets. Severus stares, adjusts the heat on the burner below the cauldron. Silence prevails. The door creaks open, just then, and Eileen comes in, stirring rod in hand. "You'll be late if--oh," she says, noticing their guests. "Good afternoon."
"Good afternoon," the other three respond with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
"Well, if it isn't Lily Evans. It's been quite a while, hasn't it? You look well," Eileen says, nudging her son out of the way so she can poke at the mixture in the cauldron.
"You as well," Lily mumbles. "And it's, ah, it's Potter now, actually. Lily Evans Potter."
"Ah, I see. My mistake. Congratulations are in order, then, Mrs. Potter."
"Congratulations," Severus echoes.
"And you're a Shacklebolt, yes?" Eileen continues, her hands methodically sprinkling ground lavender into the cauldron. "Elodie's son, I should think. You resemble her quite a bit."
"Yes, ma'am," the trainee replies. "Grandmother says I'm nearly a carbon copy."
Eileen hums, lowers the heat under the cauldron. She takes out the stirring rod, examining the clinging lavender paste before wiping it off and placing it on the counter. "I suppose I'll leave you it, though Doris just passed, and she said that Jimmy has a full house, so, do try to hurry. It's already nearly four."
"Yes, Mam."
She leaves, and once more, silence settles over the small kitchen. Severus looks at the clock on the wall, sees that it does, indeed, say that it's minutes to four. Eleven minutes, to be exact, and it's a ten minute walk to the pub. He starts gathering the tea things, has just taken Shacklebolt's empty teacup when Lily clears her throat.
"Are you a Death Eater?" she asks.
"No," Severus tells her, and takes her teacup. Ten minutes to four.
"Prove it," she says, glaring.
Severus sets down the tray and leans across the table, arms outstretched, palms up, forearms exposed. The skin on either arm is pale, smooth and utterly unmarked, save and except for the scars one is bound to get when their preferred work involves knives and hot cauldrons.
"You keep regular contact with Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy, as well as Regulus Black and Evan Rosier, all of whom are suspected Death Eaters. Why?"
Severus' eyes narrow. "Lucius is sponsoring my Potions Mastery. Narcissa, for whatever reason, enjoys my conversation. Regulus and Evan both seem to think that I'll drop dead if I don't speak to them at least once a week and I haven't been able to disabuse them of the notion--though, not for lack of trying."
"So, you aren't planning to become a Death Eater?" Seven minutes to four.
"I'm not," Severus says, biting down on something rising in his chest. He returns the tea things to their proper places, washes the cups and sets them to dry. When he looks at them again, Lily's glare has softened into an unwavering stare.
"Are you certain?" she asks, and Severus grits his teeth.
"Oh, no, not at all. I only left the Wizarding World to live in a Muggle neighbourhood with my Muggle father, work for a Muggle and feed old ladies' cats and fix their husbands' cabinets because I thought it would make it easier for me when I decided I wanted to murder them all. Obviously," he snaps, throat closing around the words as soon they've been forced out of his mouth. His jaw clamps shut. Three minutes to four.
"You're being an a—" she starts, but then she bites her tongue. "Why... why did you leave?"
He stands silent for a moment. "Reasons I don't believe we have time to discuss. It appears that I'm late for work, I'm afraid." The clock reads three fifty-nine. By the time, he reaches the front door, it will be four o' clock. He starts walking.
"But–" Lily begins, standing.
He gestures them onto the porch while he shoves his feet into his boots. "Terribly sorry to leave in a hurry like this, but duty calls. Things to do, people to see. Enjoy your evening, Mrs. Potter. Auror Trainee Shacklebolt." Four o' clock.
"Really–"
"Until next time, Mr. Snape," Shacklebolt interjects, and with a stiff nod, he and Lily make their way towards the Apparition Point they'd used and Severus is walking down the street. He exhales, slowly, carefully at the quiet, telltale crack of Disapparition off in the distance. He picks up the pace and hopes that'll be the end of it. He knows it won't, though. Until next time, Shacklebolt said.
It isn't the end, of course. It never is. There's a knock at the door just before he's ready to leave the next afternoon, and he contemplates just not answering the door and staying at home for the foreseeable future. There's enough food to last at least a week, and he could always just tell Mrs. Havisham that he wasn't feeling well. The news would make it around the town and back within the day. The knock sounds again. He sighs and gets up to go answer it. "Can I help you?"
"Only if you want to. May I come in?" Shacklebolt asks.
Against his better judgement, Severus lets him in.
#severus snape#snapedom#pro snape#fic#i didn't expect anyone to take me seriosuly but someone did and goddamn it i'll be damned if i don't give them something to read#anyways have fun#probably a bit ooc#but that's what makes aus fun amirite hehe#alright that's enough from me

Even opposite cakes attract
Summary: James and Lily assist to Petunia's wedding as their unofficial first date.
“Hello?”
“HI LILY!!”
“You don’t have to scream, Prongs”
“SORRY!!” he screamed anyway.
Lily laughed. Her laughter was so delicious and delicate. James’ heart overloaded with joy. It was easy now, making her laugh. She didn’t get annoyed, or yelled at him, or called him names. James felt as if he was doing things better.
“Moony, get out of here” he said whispering now. He wanted some privacy.
“Are you sure you can handle the, what did you call it? Oh yeah, the tellyphone, alright?”
Lily heard Remus’ voice because she laughed on the other line. James could see Padfoot and Wormtail cracking up laughing outside the booth.
“Just-get-out-of-here!!” James grunted
“Alright” Remus rolled his eyes, then yelled to the phone “BYE LILY!”
James heard her reply “BYE REMUS!”
James shooed his friend outside. He closed the door of the booth but soon enough his three dumb friends were making faces, sending him kisses across the glass.
“Sorry about them, darling” James decided to ignored them, they even deserved a middle finger. “Those assholes”
“It’s okay” Lily giggled “I know perfectly how those assholes are”
James laughed.
The whole summer, James and Lily chatted over the muggle phone. Luckily there was an old booth a few miles away from his house. Even if it was once a week, James was happy to talk with Lily, hear her voice. Really this muggle invention was ten times better than owls. It was like having Lily next to him, if he closed his eyes.
“How have you been?” James asked “How’s your summer so far”
“Stressful” Lily sighed “Petunia is getting married this weekend and my house had been a chaos with preparation and people coming over…”
“Your sister?” James asked. He had heard Remus mentioned her several times when he retold Lily’s stories to him. It was the only way to get to know her. But now, Lily had been telling him things.
Friends. Only friends. James could do that. He wanted to respect Lily’s wishes. Lily knew exactly how he felt. They had kissed. But something seemed to stop them every time, actually someone. Snape. He kept manipulating her, even after what he called her. And Lily was too good to realize it. After their first kiss, they fought about it. Then, they were okay again. Lily suggested starting from the beginning. They had been on the wrong foot before, they wanted to make things better this time. Know each other for real, not the wrong perception of each other they had before. So, friends, for now.
“Yeah… That bitch”
“Lils! I think it’s the first time you insult someone besides me” James teased
Lily snorted “You’re an idiot”
“Exactly my point”
“I just don’t want to be there alone, with Tuney’s pretentious friends and Vernon’s pretentious sister and…. OH MY GOD!!”
James jumped and his ear hurt. And he regretted now having shouted on the tellyphone before.
“Are you okay, gorgeous?”
“Sorry… It’s a stupid idea. I just had a stupid idea” Lily said nervously
“Okay…” James smiled again. James had found out that Lily was adorable and sometimes talked to much, but James could hear her talk all day. Apparently, Lily was different than what he thought. James liked this Lily better.
“Well is actually a good idea” Lily snorted “Yeah it’s definitely good” And James imagined her biting her lip as she did when she was nervous. “But I don’t know if you’re going to like it. Maybe it is horrible idea for you. I don’t know why I thought about it…”
“Hey, Lils” James interrupted “Just tell me”
Lily was definitely adorable.
Lily took a deep breath “Would you like, I mean maybe if you can and you have time… would you like…maybe come to my sister’s wedding with me?”
James was too shocked to even speak. Lily was asking him out? To Petunia’s wedding? Petunia being her sister, meaning her family would probably would be there. Her Parents!
He was sure his cheeks were burning. The Marauders were going to laugh at him. But when James turned to look at them, he saw they had given up and were seated by the grass, smoking.
“James?” Lily asked after a while “Oh Lord, I knew this was a bad idea”
“NO…NO…NO….NO….NO”
“Those were fives no’s, you definitely don’t want to come”
“NO! Shit! I mean YES!! Of course, I would like to come. I would definitely come. Just be sure I would be there, darling!”
Lily laughed relieved while James blushed profoundly.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, sure”
“It wouldn’t be… awkward?”
“Why?”
“Well… We are going slowly. And now you’re going to meet my family”
James swallowed nervously “Friends meet each other’s families, right?”
Even though I don’t want to be your friend Lily
“Right” Lily answered after a while
Then, they were in silence. It wasn’t an awkward silence. They were feeling each other’s breathing, planning on what to say. In James case, he wanted to tell Lily how much he loved her. How much he wanted to see her, kiss those lips again, how much he missed her. He wanted to say ‘Fuck being friends, please Lily be my forever and only’. But no. James was a new and improved man. He was so scared of fucking it up and going back to cero. James was going to respect her even if he had to wait forever.
“Okay then…” James began
“Okay then…” James could almost feel Lily’s smile on her voice.
“I’ll see you this weekend”
“It’s on Saturday, ten o´clock” Lily laughed “I forgot to tell you that”
“Yeah, that’s good to know” James snorted
“And I will send you the address so that you can apparate here”
“Right”
“Oh, and can you wear a muggle tuxedo? Ask Remus” Lily continued “My family is very muggle, you see”
“Don’t worry babe, I’ll be as muggle as possible” James’ intention was to impress Lily’s family.
“Now that I think about it, you probably don’t own a muggle tuxedo” Lily hissed “I am so stupid…”
“Hey gorgeous” James interrupted with a smile “I’ll figure something out, don’t’ worry”
“Okay…” Lily said now more relaxed “I’ll see you on Saturday, then”
“I’ll see you on Saturday” James answered
“Bye”
“Bye”
Silence
Lily giggled “Hang up James”
“I don’t know how”
Lily laughed louder “Right, then I’ll hang up…Bye”
“Bye gorgeous” James smiled. And then he heard a bipping sound. But James just stayed there grinning like an idiot. He just put the phone back to it’s case.
James turned to look at his friends. Moony was fast asleep on Sirius’ lap. And Peter was laying besides them, chewing a lolly.
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK
James knocked the door excitedly until his friends saw him. They jumped. But as a matter of fact, they turned to look. Even Moony was awake.
James grinned “I HAVE A DATE WITH LILY!!” he shouted.
It wasn’t technically a date. But he didn’t care.
His friends must’ve heard him, because they started cheering and clapping. James was so happy.
Lily had been very happy all morning. She felt like anything could stop her. She shouldn’t be feeling that way. But that was James Potter provoked on her. Lately she was bloody happy around him. Lily had been looking forward to see him again, perhaps kiss him again and run her fingers through his untidy hair…
But James and Lily were on good terms now. And Lily didn’t want to ruin it. She had realized James was an important person in her life. And Lily was afraid, because she had been hurt before. Turned out, the boys she’d met had been horrible to her, Luke, Severus, Jhonny. And she had thought James was on that list too. But actually, he had been acting differently. Remus had said he didn’t change, he was always like that. Only he was controlling his idiocy and his desire to show off. Lily didn’t know if she hadn’t known James at all, or if he had changed. The thing was that Lily liked this James. She liked him a lot.
And Lily was stressed and nervous about today. If Tuney wasn’t fucking hysterical, then maybe Lily wouldn’t be the same.
“Just untie the bun!” Petunia was shouting to her friend Margaret who had been working on a salon for a year and was assigned to comb Petunia´s hair for the event.
“But you wanted that bun” her friend replied nervously
“IT IS HORRENDOUS! TAKE THE BUN OUT!”
Lily understood it would be stressful to get married. But honestly, wasn’t Petunia in love? She was marrying the love of her life today. She should be happy. Lily had suggested to fix her hair with magic, but Petunia’s hateful glare and her mother’s gasp shut her down. That word was forbidden in that house. Magic. Lily missed her dad. At least he was interested in magic, Hogwarts and Lily’s subjects.
Lily was helping her mother fold some napkins for the reception when they heard the door bell rang. Almost everyone in the room yelled and panicked. Most of them being Petunia’s friends, and Lily’s aunts.
“The car isn’t supposed to be here, yet!” Marge yelled furiously. Vernon’s sister had been drinking many glasses of wine so far. Lily was afraid she wouldn’t make it to the ceremony sober.
“Lily, darling, Open the door please” her mother said “It’s probably the cater or florist”
Lily sighed before walking to the door. But when she opened it, the wasn’t any cater or florist outside. It was James.
He was wearing a blue tuxedo and a red tie. Lily remembered telling Remus she once saw Robert Redford using one in one of his movies and how sexy he looked. Lily was glad that Remus helped James dress up. Wow. And he was caring a bouquet of blue lilies. Lily was momentarily out of breath.
His iconic grin disappeared when he saw Lily’s shocked expression. James was early. So early. Lily wasn’t even dressed. Her hair and makeup were fixed already but she was waiting to put on her dress, in case it was ruined. Or else, Petunia might actually kill her.
“You look beautiful” James said running his hand through his hair, which made him even hotter.
Lily tried not to blush.
“What are you…”
But James was openly staring at her outfit, which meant her body. Lily unconsciously wrapped herself tighter with her dressing gown.
“Perhaps I am wrongly dressed” he looked down to himself “Remus said this would be fine”
Lily couldn’t avoid laughing.
“No James, you’re perfectly fine and very handsome” she blushed “But you’re like” she checked the house’s entrance clock “An hour early” she smiled at him.
“Yeah” James said confused “Moony said that muggles arrive one hour early to every event, and I wanted to…”
Lily bit her lip to avoid laughing. Probably James noticed.
“And he totally lied to me….” James closed his eyes embarrassed “FUCK REMUS LUPIN! I am so sorry… I am an idiot”
James sighed profoundly. And he started pacing and rubbing his hair uncontrollably. Lily giggled as she watched him.
“I can leave and come back if you want to…” he continued “Or I can leave and not assist at all… Fuck…. Remus…. Arrg…”
Lily laughed louder. She was so happy now that he was here.
“James, it’s fine…”
He looked at her.
“It’s totally fine” she repeated “Actually it is good that you arrive early” she took him by the arm “We need more hands to help” she dragged him inside.
James looked around like a little kid in the zoo. Lily found him adorable. He was even adjusting his glasses. Lily’s house wasn’t a big thing. It was small and average. Remus had mentioned how big James’ house was.
“There are quite a number of people in the room” James pointed amused. Like a kid showing their parent something interesting. Lily smiled.
“All of them are muggles?” James asked
Lily nodded. Her mother had two sisters, each one with their husbands. And her father had an older brother who had a lot of children and younger single sister. Her aunt Katie was her favorite, maybe because she reminded her of her father. And then, there were all Petunia’s friends: Ruth, Genevie and Margaret. Marge had been added to the group of bridesmaids as well as Lily.
Lily nodded “You and me, the only freaks”
Lily meant that as a joke, but James didn’t laugh.
“Don’t worry. I have my wand buried in my pocket” he said as he patted his chest “Today I am as muggle as the rest”
Lily knew Severus would’ve hated being here. He would probably had said something mean about so many muggles, how they were different and superior than them. Probably he wouldn’t have wanted to come at all. Lily was happy she had invited James.
She smiled “Let’s go. I’ll introduce you to everyone”
James was polite with everyone. He smiled, accepted handshakes and kissed the girls in the cheek. Some of Petunia’s friends were even eyeing hungrily at James. And Lily tried not to be jealous.
Lily’s aunts even mentioned that her ‘boyfriend’ was adorable and easy going. Lily decided not to correct them. And she enjoyed the grin and red cheeks on James’ face.
“Boyfriend, ha?” James raised an eyebrow once they were out of sight
“Shut up” Lily laughed “You need to meet Petunia and mum”
James seemed more confident. But Lily was not. Petunia wasn’t the nicest person to be around.
They got to the kitchen. Lily’s mother was busy talking, or better yet yelling at someone on the phone. So, Lily decided to go to Petunia first.
Margaret had managed to keep Petunia’s blond hair loose. With tiny flowers on top and curls falling down to her shoulders. She looked beautiful. Although her expression didn’t seem cheerful. She was looking at her reflection and deciding what to do with it.
“Wow Maggie” Lily said as they approached “It looks nice”
“Thanks Lily” At least Maggie was nice to Lily, when Tuney and Ruth weren’t around.
“Tuney…” Lily swallowed “This is my… eh friend James Potter”
Petunia didn’t seem to be listening to her. Lily bit her lip trying not to be embarrassed.
“From school” Lily added.
And now Petunia seemed interested, she looked up finally at James.
“Hi Petunia” James offered her his hand “Lily had told me loads about you. I’m James”
As adorable as ever. But Petunia didn’t seem swiped by James’ charm.
“I thought you were going to invite Snape” Petunia simply said looking at Lily. James lowered his hand slowly.
Lily was just asking one thing from her sister. A little bit of kindness towards her friend, boyfriend… well James. Just like she had shown to her friends or Vernon and his irritable sister, none of who had been nice to Lily. And James was being kind to her. In fact, he had been acting like a proper gentleman.
“No… I told you we aren’t friends anymore” Lily side glanced at James. They had discussed about Severus in the past. And Lily didn’t want to cause trouble.
“Good” Petunia said “I reckon he is better than Snape” then she turned to James “Your hair is widely untamed”
“I’ve been told” James nodded
“Nice. Maybe Maggie could fix it”
Maggie laughed nervously “I don’t think I…”
“I am only joking” Petunia said
James tried to laugh “You’re funny”
“Lily…” Petunia made Lily lean for her to whisper in her ear “I know he is one of...your kind. If he doesn’t behave…”
But Lily pulled away furiously “Your hair looks nice, Tuney” she crossed her arms.
“Oh, Lily why aren’t you dressed yet?” Mrs. Evans appeared behind Lily
“Mum, does my hair look good?” Petunia asked
“You look wonderful, darling” Mrs. Evans smiled “Lily. We are about to leave and… Oh, who are you? I don’t know you” she stared at James.
James immediately offered his hand and a wide smile. Lily was grateful.
“Mrs. Evans, pleasure to meet you. I am James Potter. I go with your daughter to school”
“Oh, I see” Mrs. Evans shook his hand “Nice suit”
“Thank you”
“He speaks like royalty” Mrs. Evans offered. Lily giggled. James tended to speak like a fine English man when he was around adults. He did the same with teachers.
“Lily does know strange people” Tuney commented
“Oh, I believe Vernon speaks funny as well” Lily spatted. Her mother, James and Maggie laughed. Petunia just glared at her. She began everything. It wasn’t Lily’s fault.
“Lily!” Mrs. Evans chanted “The dress!”
“Coming”
“Oh, and James can help me fold the rest of the napkins”
“Oh, I would absolutely adore to do so” James smiled
Mrs. Evans smiled “Very polite”
“You’ll have to teach him, mum” Lily grinned “He hasn’t folded a napkin in his life”
“I can fold napkins!” James protested “With a bit of magic” he whispered on Lily’s ear.
“No” she whispered back.
James smiled and winked at her.
“See you in a bit” Lily kissed his cheek and ran upstairs before James or herself could react to that gesture.
“REMUS JOHN LUPIN!” James didn’t shout loudly in case anyone heard him “Sirius put me with Moony! I can’t hear him laughing in the back!”
“I tell you mate; Remus is a bloody genius” Sirius roared with laughter.
James was freaking out. Mrs. Evans had tried to make a proper conversation with him. But James started talking about how fascinating the microwave was. James didn’t know how to talk to muggles. Not because they weren’t cool. But because he was so afraid of dropping something suspicious and magical. So, James had excused himself and locked in the restroom. Luckily, he had brought the two-way mirror.
“HE IS AN IDIOT THAT’S WHAT HE IS” James spatted “Did you have any idea about this?”
“Nop…”
James raised an eyebrow
“I swear! It was all Moony’s doing. I know as much about muggles as you”
“Arrive one hour later, talk a lot about microwaves… Bloody bastard!”
His two friends laughed hysterically.
“Put me with Remus Traitor Lupin…” James frowned “Oi! Are you in my pool?” James caught a glimpse of his familiar pool at home.
“Oh hi, James” Remus appeared in the mirror, grinning like an idiot.
“Traitor!”
“Sirius said this is his house as well so he is allowed to use the pool, which is not only yours” Remus said sipping lemonade “And Sirius invited me, so”
“Ha ha ha, you’re so funny. You fucking twat”
Remus giggled.
“Lily is very important to me, okay? Therefore, her family”
“At least I gave you a sweet tuxedo” Remus said
“It was well accepted” James said “What, are you hanging out without me? Where’s Peter?”
“I didn’t invite him” Sirius’ face appeared as well
“You didn’t invite him?” Remus asked “I thought you said he couldn’t come”
“I wanted to spend the day with you” Sirius shrugged
Remus looked embarrassed, and James saw him blushing. Or maybe was the sun.
“What the actual fuck?” James teased “The pretty good best friends, ha?”
Remus and Sirius smiled. James rubbed his hair.
“Okay, I need advice. And this time GOOD ADVICE JOHN LUPIN”
“Oh, I am going to call you John now” Sirius grinned
“Don’t you dare!”
“Lily has been flirting with me, okay?” James continued “I know it. I know it! And she kissed me on the cheek…”
“Wild” Remus commented
“Use protection!” Sirius gasped
“Idiots” James rolled his eyes “I just really want to push her against the wall and kiss her senseless. But at the same time, I want to be her everything and marry her and have her babies. And I won’t be able to do that if I push her like I did last time. Like I know we are just friends, but we keep flirting and I don’t think I will be able to stand her gorgeous face and body any longer. I mean I am sweating just thinking about her. I cannot sweat!”
“Relax, Prongs” Sirius whistled
“Just be yourself” Remus suggested “Actually don’t be yourself. Be more like me. Maybe you should behave”
“I bet you would be snogging her by the end of the night” Sirius said grabbing his glass of lemonade.
“Did Effie prepare lemonade without me?” James pouted
But Sirius didn’t listen “Or if you’re lucky, you can sh…”
Remus knocked over the drink over Sirius.
“MOONY!”
“Stop talking shit, Sirius”
They started discussing, as they always did. James was used to them discussing and liking each other as nothing happened. But he was more preoccupied on the possibility of doing something with Lily. He was sweating. And then he heard footsteps outside the door.
“I gotta go, they think I am pooping”
And James hung up pocketing the mirror and exiting the bathroom.
James smiled at some people on the hall, before walking to the kitchen again.
“Napkins look good, Mrs. Evans” James announced.
Mrs. Evans laughed. She had already changed to a discreet dress and was fixing her hair.
“You look nice as well, Mrs. Evans”
“Thank you, James” Mrs. Evans blushed “You are really a wonderful young man. You remind me of my husband when he was young”
James knew Lily’s father had died a year ago. James had tried to apologize for the Snape incident. And Lily had yelled at him horrible things. But he didn’t know she had lost her father until Marlene mentioned it later that day. The good thing was that James and Lily were on good terms now. Excellent terms.
“I wish I had been able to meet him” James said “Lily speaks highly about him”
Mrs. Evans smiled as she put on some earring.
“He would’ve liked you” she said sighing.
“Who doesn’t like the incredible James”
James turned around to see Lily. She looked so beautiful, so gorgeous. She was wearing a violet dress, with a pink ribbon on her waist. The dress revealed a bit of Lily’s breasts. She was wearing a heart shaped necklace. The one she always wore. Her hair was loose with red curls going down to her waist. She was wearing makeup and red lipstick which made her lips more desirable. She was so beautiful; James felt his legs trembled a little. His heart raced.
I want her, I love her. James thought.
But even if she was a few meters away, she seemed unreachable. Forget about Quidditch. Lily was the best thing in the world.
“Wow” James sighed “You look… am…” he moved his hands from his pockets to his hair “There are no words to describe how dashing you look, darling. I mean literally wow. A piece of art”
Lily’s face adopted the same red color as her hair. She bit her lip and looked down but she was smiling.
“You are wow yourself, Potter”
James grinned. James had forgotten that Mrs. Evans was there until she laughed.
“I think Tuney is not the only one in love this evening” she said. James and Lily blushed. “Do you want to come in the car or you prefer to walk?”
“We’ll walk” Lily said smiling at James
“Be there on time, Lily”
Mrs. Evans smiled at James and followed Petunia’s moans and complains somewhere in the house. But James too concentrated in Lily’s green eyes, staring back at him.
“We are going to walk there?” James decided to break the ice
Lily smiled “Church is only a few blocks away” she explained “But Tuney wanted to arrive elegantly in a car. I bet Vernon and the rest are already there”
“Okay…” James showed her his arms for her to take it “Let’s go milady”
“I bet that in an hour I will take these horrible heels off” Lily said “Try to use heels one day”
“The next wedding, we assist, I’ll promise I wear a good pair of heels”
Lily laughed.
“Deal”
They walked talking about many things. From their families, to the war, to their plans for the future, to silly things like food or music preference. It was so easy talking to each other. There were a lot of things they actually didn’t know about each other, even if they’ve been class mates for six years. James made Lily laugh a lot. And James laughed a lot. It just felt that the two of them where the only ones in that street, in that town, in that world.
“If there was a fire in your house, what’s the first thing would save?” Lily asked
“Oh, we are going with the deep shit questions, aren’t we?”
Lily giggled.
“Amm…” James thought about the question “It depends which one is my home and who I am living with”
“I thought you were going to say your broomstick or something” Lily smiled
“I am not that shallow!” James protested
Lily laughed
“I guess if I cannot rescue my parents or anyone alive…”
Lily shook her head.
“I would save our book, me and my folks’ book”
“What book?”
“We have this family book full of photographs and paper clips, and letters we saved through the years” James explained “I remember we started it when I was six. My parents were my best friends back then, they still are. But now I have The Marauders, and you and the girls. But they are everything to me. So, if everything burns, I would like to save that”
James didn’t say this to impress Lily or anything. It was actually true. He wasn’t ashamed of having a good relationship with his parents. Because he had the best parents in the world.
But Lily was looking at him in a very different and intense way. James decided to clear his throat.
“What about you?”
Lily smiled “No. I think I cannot beat your answer, I’m afraid”
“Now I’m curious”
“I was going to say my collection of records”
“I don’t believe you” James laughed “Come on, you don’t want to tell me!”
Lily laughed too “Really that was going to be my answer, because I thought you were going to say your broomstick… Now, I look like an idiot”
“Okay, okay” James laughed “I change my answer, I would save my broomstick. Happy?”
“In that case I would save my dad’s favorite books, the ones he used to read me when I was little” Lily said “Now my answer is better than yours” she grinned
“And I am the superficial asshole again”
“Exactly” Lily giggled
“You are worse than Moony”
Lily laughed “We arrived” she announced.
James even forgot that they were heading to a wedding. Petunia’s wedding. The church was a very large building with black windows. The guests were entering the place and taking their seats. Some were chatting on the entrance. James swallowed, more people to meet and impress.
Lily stopped before stepping inside.
“I might cry I lot in there” she said “Promise to hold my hand and don’t laugh?”
James dared to take her hand right now. And he kissed her cheek.
“Promise, love” he whispered. And they stepped in.
They sat on the front rows, still holding hands. James was so happy. He felt a sort of feeling of protectiveness towards Lily. Like Lily belonged with him. Like they were meant for each other.
And suddenly he didn’t need to snog or do other things with Lily. Like he wanted to do so of course but this was ten times better than any physical pleasure. Just sitting with Lily in silence. Holding hands.
Many people asked Lily if James was her boyfriend. She simply nodded, smiled or blushed. James didn’t know what to do about it. But she wasn’t saying no. Lily whispered on James’ ear who these people were, how they were related to her, and a quick funny anecdote about them.
“That’s my father’s cousin Maurice. Legend says he hides pot in his wig”
James and Lily giggled and some people shushed them up. That made them giggle even more.
Vernon was a short, chubby lad with the largest moustache James had ever seen. He looked nervous but pleased with himself.
“We don’t particularly like each other, me and Vernon” Lily whispered “I think Tuney deserved better”
“Love is blind, they say” James answered “Although I don’t see how can I be more blind than I already am”
Lily giggled with this. She was trying so hard to contain her laughter. She looked adorable. James dared to kiss her hand. Which he was still holding.
“Lily please” Mrs. Evans warned
“Sorry”
“Sorry, Mrs. Evans. Lily is nervous” James whispered
James found Mrs. Evans was really fond of him and she smiled at him a lot.
Music started and everyone raised to receive the bride. Petunia walked in accompanied by someone who Lily said was her uncle and Petunia’s godfather since their parent couldn’t be there.
“Every child has a godfather? Because I don’t have one” James whispered as Petunia entered
“Not magical children, no”
“Maybe they should”
Lily smiled and then squeezed his hand hard. James grunted in pain.
“Sorry. She looks so beautiful and she is getting married” Lily’s eyes watered.
The ceremony was beautiful. James had assisted wizard weddings when he was a kid. He remembered more rituals, spells, magical shows and performances. But this was nothing like those. This seemed more intimate, simpler. James wanted his wedding to be like this. And then, he started fantasying about his wedding. Could it be with Lily? They could get there. And start a live together. James stared at Lily. How beautiful she was. How much she cared about her sister. James wanted to live that with Lily. Maybe in the future he hoped. For now, he was holding Lily’s hand, and he wanted to kiss her. Only once.
Even if Lily hated Vernon, the way they had looked at each other in the ceremony. Him and Petunia were truly in love. Even if Lily couldn’t understand how Petunia could love someone like that. Lily had read about that one true love in books and watch it in movies. And Lily aspired to that. Finding her one true love. It didn’t happen with any of the boys she had met.
But James was different. It wasn’t exactly love…yet. But Lily knew she had a special connection with him. She’d never laughed so hard with someone, or be so relaxed and safe with someone. She’d never wanted to snog someone so badly. She’d never fantasized about it. She’d never felt so intensely happy with someone.
The reception was held on The Evans residence. It wasn’t that big so everyone was squeezed between the living room, the dinning room, the kitchen and the backyard.
Lily went upstairs to change to flat shoes before her feet broke. So, she was ready to dance after lunch. Dance with James. Lily had been considering all afternoon if she should kiss him. Would it change things? Lily was scared of staring a relationship with him and somehow fuck it up or James being someone else. James had tried to get with Lily for three years. What if Lily accepted, the spell would break and James wouldn’t like her anymore, what if he moved on to flirt with another girl? It was easy being that way. Just friends, like being in a very comfortable bubble. But oh boy, Lily wanted to kiss him and break it so bad, but she was scared.
They chatted over food with Lily’s mother, and the new wedded.
“Congratulations Vernon, is it? I think you two look very happy together and make a lovely couple” James tried casually, but Lily could tell he was nervous because he moved his leg a lot under the table.
Vernon and Petunia were caught of guard by James' intervention. They stared at him with displeasure. Petunia whispered something in his ear and Vernon’s eyes widened. Lily squeezed her napkin under the table.
It had been in New Year’s when Vernon found out about Lily’s “condition”. She had wanted to tell him because he had proposed over Christmas and Lily wanted him to know Petunia’s family. Where he was getting into. Petunia avoided the subject, and simply replied with a ‘I’ll tell him eventually’. Lily had cornered Vernon at New Year’s party and told him everything. She even made magic without her wand, which wasn’t registered at the Ministry. Vernon ran away, started his vehicle and left for the night. He didn’t speak with Petunia for days. She was devastated. And Lily felt guilty. She tried to contact him without response. She apologized with her sister and he was furious. Eventually, the couple worked things out, otherwise they weren’t here at their wedding. But Vernon flinched every time Lily was around. Vernon was scared of her. Probably Petunia mentioned James was the same.
“Thank you, sir” Vernon simply answered. And continued chatting with his sister.
Lily felt sick. Vernon was now her family, and he was always going to look at her with disgust.
But James looked pleased “He called me, sir” he whispered smiling.
James was so pure, so amiable, so wonderful. Lily was not going to permit that either Vernon or Petunia treat him badly, even if it was their wedding.
Later that evening, many people were dancing. Others drinking and smoking now that the party had officially initiated. James and Lily were on their desserts while Vernon went on and on about the cars, he was planning on buying for him and Petunia.
“Why did you order chocolate?” Lily asked ignoring Vernon. There were two types of cake. Thanks to the various bakers on the family. One chocolate cake, one lemon cake.
“Chocolate is the best!” James protested “Moony would’ve adored this one”
“True” Lily said “But too much of a chocolate is not good”
“Why?”
“It ends up getting too sweet to enjoy. And then you hated it, and you avoid chocolate for days after that”
“That’s better than ordering lemon”
“It’s actually pretty good”
“Yeah?” James raised an eyebrow “Can I try it?”
“Can I try the chocolate one?”
James nodded grinning. Lily took a large bite of the chocolate cake, while James took a large bite of the lemon one.
“Yeah it’s not bad” James said
Lily moaned when she tasted chocolate “So good” she licked the spoon.
James looked at her amused with his cheeks slightly red. Lily decided to ignore that.
“What about the nonsense of chocolate is bad?” James asked
“I told you. Only in little amounts, otherwise is awful”
“Remus would disagree with you”
“I know” Lily smiled “What if we mix them?”
“What if we mix them indeed?” James raised an eyebrow
They both giggled as they took a bit of one flavor and a bit of the other. And put them in their mouths at the same time.
It was actually pretty good. Lily laughed. James and her hit palms happy for their discovery.
“Opposites attract” Lily said
“Even opposites cakes attract” James added
Lily thought it was true. That was them. Chocolate and Lemon cakes falling in love and making a better mixture. Lily thought they couldn’t be more different, but they complemented each other in such way, it was beautiful.
“Maybe we can make this a tradition” James said “Order different flavors and mix them up”
Tradition. James saw her in his future. Lily giggled. And Lily had never wanted him so badly. She was leaning in, ready to kiss him, snog him senseless. Even if everything changed after that. James noticed this and his expression changed, he was leaning as well…
“What car do you own, Mr. eh….”
Vernon had ignored James all evening and now he tried to chat with him, just now…
“Potter” James answered quickly, clearing his throat and rubbing his hair, kind of blushing for what they were about to do “And I don’t own cars, I own a broomstick”
Vernon jumped at the sound of that word as it was obscene. He looked around, luckily no one was there. Just the three of them. Petunia was chatting with different relatives as well as her mother. Marge was gulping more wine. Vernon’s parents were dancing.
“We don’t ride cars” James said “We…” he looked around and leaned over whispering “wizards”
Vernon jumped again and blinked hard.
“I see…” Vernon said, he looked around trying to find an escape, regretting his decision of chatting with James in the first place “Then your kind… doesn’t have very much money, I assume? For having…eh… tricks?”
Lily almost laughed. She had tried to explain what her world was like, but they never payed her attention.
“Oh no” James laughed “We have money just like you, in fact my family owns a big portion of money. Not to brag or anything. And I just buy the best broom on the market just like you own the best muggle transport…”
“James…” Lily hissed
Vernon looked disgusted and scared.
“And we have a bank and everything to store our money, Gringotts. Guarded by goblins” James nodded and took a sip of his wine “The most secure place in the world they say”
“James…”
“It must be some sort of joke” Vernon grunted “Did I hear correctly? Go-goblins? Guarding your money?”
“Yeah. They are very serious when it comes to money” James nodded
Lily sighed. Vernon looked purple now.
“Are you mocking me? Are you truly laughing in my face?” Vernon snaped “Lily…”
It was the first time he said her name in a long time
“You bring a fool to my wedding so that he can mock me?”
“I am telling the truth!” James protested, but Lily grabbed his arm
“Nonsense!” Vernon raised up “I don’t like your behavior mister. I very well hope you had too much wine to justify your loose tongue. Excuse me” And with that he stormed out of the table towards his new wife.
“Very rude! I was telling the truth… I was very well telling the truth. You know that” James protested “Fuck, sorry, darling. Maybe I should go there and apologize…”
“No, it’s fine”
“Lils, I don’t want to be on bad terms with your family. They are very important to me because you are”
Lily’s heart started racing.
“Let me just…”
But before James could move, Lily kissed him. Lily, never in her life, had done something so reckless without thinking about it before. But there she was. She wanted to avoid more chaos, but the main reason was that she had been wanting to do that since the end of their first kiss, back in June.
James was shocked at first. But then, he responded to the kiss. And he moved in a way that sent shivers down her spine. After they were done, Lily smiled embarrassed. Her face was hot and red.
She snorted “Do you know how to dance?”
“What?” James was still in shock which was adorable.
“You don’t?” Lily said “Don’t worry. I will show you”
She took James’ hand and she dragged him to the dance floor.
“You have to put your hands on my waist” she instructed avoiding the urge to kiss him again and the embarrassment she felt. James obeyed.
“I’ve heard dancing involves a lot of kissing as well” James said
Lily laughed and everything was back to normal. Lily decided that was a green flag to kiss him again.
“Now focus” Lily laughed and wrapped her arms around James’ shoulders. He smelled so good. “Now we have to sway to the music”
Lily closed her eyes feeling her heart beats mixing with James’. She placed her head on James’ chest, confirming how much his heart raced. If this wasn’t love, it must be something very similar.
“Am I doing it correctly?” James whispered
“Perfectly fine”
“The dancing or the kissing?”
Lily laughed “Both”
“You’re good at both as well, gorgeous”
Lily loved when he called her gorgeous.
The rest of the evening was wonderful. They decided not to worry about anything and had a good time. They drank, ate more, danced a lot, sang a lot. And kiss a lot.
Petunia and Vernon left for their honeymoon at some point before sunset. The party continued. And Lily didn’t realize there were actually many people leaving, but the party was still on.
“I’m tired!” Lily announced after a while collapsing on her chair. She had to be fair, she was slightly drunk. Maybe more than slightly. “Do you want to take me to my room?”
When Lily saw that James went red as a tomato, she laughed. “Just to tug me in bed and then leave, you little perv” she was definitely drunk.
James seemed drunk as well. But many years of experience of after match parties, made him resist alcohol a bit more. James smiled widely. Then kissed her.
“You’re so gorgeous” he said
“So, do you” Lily said and they kissed again.
They climbed upstairs making sure they weren’t seen by the rest of the guests, specially Mrs. Evans. But she seemed too busy being host.
As soon as they got there, Lily collapsed on the bed. Her bed. James seemed unsure to be there. He was such a gentleman.
“I don’t bite” Lily grinned “Com’ere”
James lied beside Lily. Within the silence of the room, Lily could clearly hear his heart beats and his heavy breathing. James was nervous. Which made Lily want him more.
“I want your jacket so I can have your smell when you leave” Lily concluded that alcohol in her system was like Varitaserum.
James laughed “At this rhythm you’re going to strip me down”
Lily blushed at this, and her body felt warmer at the thought of a naked James.
“Here…”
Lily sat down and let James place the jacket around her. And she was happy she asked for it, it smelled really nice, just like James. She lied down again next to James. But James was already kissing her. And she kissed him back. James was being so nice. He respected when she wanted to stop, they giggled for a while and continued. James tried not to touch her where she didn’t want to or felt too uncomfortable. He didn’t even try to take off her clothes.
They stopped kissing after a while but facing the ceiling. Then Lily dared to hold his hand. They stared at each other only through the moonlight.
“I had a wonderful time” James whispered “Thank you for inviting me, beautiful”
“I am going to miss you for the rest of the summer” she whispered back, now closing her eyes. She was getting sleepy.
“Me too, Lils”
Lily knew he wanted to ask the question. What were they? Were they a couple now?
I love you. I love you. I love you. But I am scared of you getting tired of me. I am scared of this feeling being over.
“Would you stay with me until I fall asleep?” that’s what she said instead.
“Of course” James whispered before kissing her forehead.
Lily slowly drifted to sleep.
The next day, Lily woke surrounded by James’ scent. She smiled. She was still wearing James’ jacket. Lily hugged it, like it was James himself. She giggled. In the pocket, she found a strange pocket mirror. And a note that said:
With this, we will be able to talk and see each other until the end of summer. So, the longing would not be eternal.
Love,
James.

Vulnera Sanentur
New one-shot consisting of 5 different time episodes about Severus Snape’s signature healing spell. My headcanon is that the spell had been passed down to him by mother Eileen and not having been used before by any other wizard except those from the Prince family. // This and other one-shots can be found on my newly opened AO3 account https://archiveofourown.org/users/Hayalee8 <3
_______________
"Watcha sayin', mummy?"
His voice sounded feeble, dropping with exhaustion. Just a short while ago, his shrieks of pain and terror had been filling the room; now, however, a soothing dizziness took over, his mother's quiet singing voice lulling him into sleep.
"Be silent, darling, it's almost over. Just a wee bit and I'll be done. Don't move yet."
Gentle fingers continued tracing along his naked back, and he obediently held still, and yet wanted an answer to his question.
"But watcha sayin'?.."
His mother sang a few last tunes, voice trailing off, the words turning almost into a whisper. Her movements stopped and she rose from his bed which she had been sitting upon for the last minutes.
"Something good, something very good, Sevvie. It's a song which makes your back feel alright again. It's not hurting anymore, is it?"
"Nah, it isn't, mummy."
"I'm happy, darling. Now let's make sure you're going to sleep well, shall we?"
He wanted to protest, as he always did, he never wanted to sleep, he hated being left alone and the nightmares only increased the fear; but his lids did not obey him anymore.
"I see you won't need a calming draught this time", he heard his mother chuckle quietly, "good night then."
He felt being tucked in and a light kiss on his forehead, yet was too tired to even smile back as he usually did, as his mind traveled off into the land of dreams.
***
"Please, please come! She's going to die, you have to heal her!
"I can't."
"Please, she will die!! You know how to do it, you always know!"
"I said I can't, Severus."
"But why!? Just come and sing that song, you've just been doing it on my arm when father hit me yesterday, why can't you now?!"
"Just let it go."
"No!! I won't! If you don't want to, I'll do it myself! Tell me the spell!"
"It won't work."
"Because I don't know how to, but you do, mum! Help me save her!!"
"Be quiet, Severus."
"I won't! That's evil! She doesn't deserve to die!"
"I said be quiet!"
"You are just as evil as him!"
"Shut up, will you!? Is it my fault that your retarded father had to kill this sodding cat?! The spell doesn't work on animals! Besides, he cut her throat; she must have bled to death already."
"I don't believe you!!"
"Leave me alone, now!!"
***
Severus riffled through the drawers in desperate urgency. Nothing. The bookshelf didn't have anything to offer either. The floor was littered with papers and pencils and books and whatever else he had thrown around in his frantic search. He hadn't still mastered the spell well enough to be able to follow the exact sequence of melody and words, but his notes could help him out, they most definitely would, he had no doubt in his abilities, he just needed to find those notes. The ones he had scribbled down after having listened carefully to his mother performing it on his body, following yet another broken bottle having been thrown in his direction, slicing up his skin. He didn't want to ask his mother as she would inquire in turn what he would need it for, or even worse, for whom... Severus had no intention whatsoever to elaborate on who he had been sharing his magic with the past weeks. Never were they to know who he was meeting with during those lazy afternoons filled with absolutely nothing but him sitting behind the bushes, staring at the road behind them and waiting for the tiny figure with the long, wavy red hair to approach the playground and whistle three times. Then he could leave his hiding place and allow himself to smile and be him, actually enjoying his existence, for the next few hours, until the darkness fell and they both had to leave, each one to what they were able to call home.
Severus threw himself on the bed. The notebook was nowhere to be found. And yet he had promised it to her. That he would help her get rid of the ugly red scar on her leg, the result of the recent tryouts of their magical abilities. How he hated himself for that stupid idea of his. What was he thinking, attempting to cut that bloody orange with her sitting right next to it? To be honest, neither of them had deemed it possible to actually make something happen just by staring at it and doing imaginary cutting movements with the fruit knife. When she had tried it, nothing at all happened, whereas him... Of course it was Lily who had kept her nerves and swallowed the pain and the tears and promised she wouldn't tell anyone how the knife ended up slashing her leg instead of the orange. And that she didn't believe he did it on purpose, like when the branch had fallen on Petunia back then, before she got to know who he really was. Severus, devastated as he was about his lack of damage control, and astonished by her bravery, gave his most sincere and heartfelt promise to find a way to make it disappear. So Lily could attend her first day at Hogwarts without this disgraceful injury, the screaming proof of him having failed her in both his abilities and their rightful application.
Their first day was due tomorrow. Lily was waiting at the playground for him to arrive and fulfill his promise before the sun would set and she had to go home and prepare for her big day. And here he was, in his bloody room, all his efforts in vain, the notebook gone and so the healing spell.
Severus sighed deeply. Never before had he dared taking anything of his mother's, neither ingredients which she kept in a box in the storage room, nor vials or lotions she used to store in an empty cupboard in the attic. But drastic times called for drastic measures. He had to make up for the spell somehow, and if he remembered correctly, dittany was another way of healing scars. Luckily for him, his mother was at work. Severus quickly climbed the ladder to the attic. He had no time to lose. Thankfully enough his mother knew how to keep things in order. Every vial and bottle were meticulously labeled. He grabbed the bottle with "Dittany" written on it and stormed down the ladder and out of the house. He would take care of the chaos in his room later and if his father arrived before him to see it and punish him for this, so be it. Perhaps he'd get another chance then to listen to his mother singing the spell and would write it into another notebook. Right now, Lily was what mattered most.
***
"He must have it written somewhere!"
"We've searched through all of his stuff so far, there is nothing here!"
"Who told you he really knows how to do it?! Perhaps it's just a rumour!"
"A rumour? Are you daft?! I saw him perform it with my own eyes, on Evans! They were practicing with their brooms and she flew into the Whomping Willow by accident and had her face and arms cut badly. Snape rushed to her and began moving his wand up and down the cuts and do some singing, so by the time the patrol arrived the cuts had disappeared and she was walking on her feet with him leading her up to the castle."
"You are the daft one, Prongs; isn't it clear then that he must know it by heart??"
"It still has to be written somewhere. He could've hardly made it up on his own, could he?"
"Yeah, rather not; it's Dark magic the git is into, not healing spells. He must have found it in the library and written it down."
"What for then?"
"To impress Evans? He fancies her no less than you, Prongs, and that's the sort of thing she'd appreciate, mind you, so he can cover up for all his Dark stuff."
"Oh shut up and search, Padfood, the class will be over soon and we've got to get out of here before everyone comes back!"
"What if we don't find anything?"
"We cannot let anyone know it was Moony who scratched the boy. If there won't be another option, we'll drag him personally to the hospital wing to make the cut disappear."
***
This was not the enemy he had invented it for. This was not the spell he would have expected to make its way into the halls of Hogwarts, of all places. And even though it was by far not the first time he had to resort to Vulnera Sanentur to heal cursed injuries of students or colleagues or Death Eaters, he would have never thought it to be possible that he had to use it to undo the damage caused by his very own curse, casted by Lily's son, of all people.
Of course he believed Potter. He could have never known what force the curse carried. If Potter knew, he certainly wouldn't have applied it. As much as Severus felt repulsed by the boy, he knew that Potter was as far from Dark magic as the Dark Lord from valuing mercifulness, or love. He contemplated if a simple detention had been enough an appropriate punishment to bestow upon Potter. If he should have made him to return the book, which Potter undoubtedly had laid his hands upon, regardless of the lies the boy had told him. His apparent leniency for the infliction of such a powerful curse by a student on another was obvious, and it worried Severus. Sectumsempra had by far not been the only dangerous spell he had written down in his book. On the other hand, he reasoned, as easily impressible as Potter was, the messy result he had created would probably serve as a deterrent, powerful enough to keep him from attempting another tryout with any of Severus's spells. At least not without the knowledge of their counter-curses, first and foremost Vulnera Sanentur, which Potter had not the slightest possibility of mastering.
Vulnera Sanentur. Such tremendous power in only two words, reversing unforgivable, unfathomable harm, healing what would've never been expected to heal. A song of life, the melody of which he had inherited from his mother to be able to put a stopper in pain and destruction and death. This time it had saved the soul of his godson and his former enemy's son alike, the one from being killed, the other from becoming a murderer.
Where would he meet it again, waiting for him to be evoked to secure the survival of another miserable being? How would that fateful crossroads look like, where would the paths it offered lead to? There was one thing he knew with dreadful certainty - it would not be destined to save the Headmaster's life. And the more he thought about it, the more he felt his other conclusion to be affirmed - neither would it save his.
Severus sighed, feeling a wave of exhaustion overpowering his senses. Before he closed his eyes to gain a few hours of sleep which were left for him until the break of dawn, a peculiar thought crossed his mind, perhaps for the first time in his life: If his mother had mastered the healing spell for a human body and taught it to him, wouldn't it have been assumable she had knowledge of a spell to relieve the pain of a human mind as well? And if she had, would there have been a reason not pass it down to him? If only...
His mind drifted off, and so did the thought.

Severus: Lily
I know what Fandom says and thinks for the most part. And I know what Rowling has said. Both of which I reject. I don’t like this narrative that Severus was stalkery obsessed with Lily. I am disgusted at the “it’s a good thing harry wasn’t a girl who looked just like his mother” discussions. So let’s break down how I view their friendship.
Let’s start with them meeting. A lot of people take him watching Lily and Petunia at the park as creepy but here’s a few reasons why it’s not. 1) People watching. Literally everyone does this some. If you’re in a public place, you’re going to watch the other people there, see what they’re doing. 2) Shyness. Severus is clearly not a social person. He’s very introverted. Plus, we know he and his family are quite the social pariahs in the neighborhood. They’re looked down upon for being poor, and it seems that perhaps their family life isn’t so private either. He’s not just going to feel comfortable or safe approaching two girls who are from a much better off family. 3) Lily was doing magic in a public setting, in broad daylight. On purpose. For Severus, that’s quite impressive. And likely what caught his attention as well as being how he built up the courage to talk to her. He was like her, and it was clear he had answers that her family didn’t.
And that is how their friendship is born. It is born of this mutual thing they have in common. And Severus is getting to tell Lily everything he knows. She listens, she talks with him, asks him questions, everything. This is likely everything he doesn’t get at home. Lily has become a refuge. Which is perhaps unhealthy, but at this stage, she’s his friend.
Their first obstacle comes at the sorting. It’s clear that Severus wants Slytherin. He is starting to believe the toxic pureblood rhetoric at a young age. But then again, two thirds of his interactions with muggles are extremely negative. You have his father, who resents Severus and Eileen for what they are. He punishes them for it. And then there’s Petunia. Who is envious of Lily (and likely Snape on the magic front if nothing else) and lashes out because of it. There’s also the muggles around him, in which he gets only pity and a blind eye from as well as sneers and jdugement. And he knows he’s more powerful than them. But he can’t do a damn thing with that. So unlike most prejudice against muggles wizards, his prejudice lies in his real life experiences as opposed to people like Draco who are just raised to believe that muggles are scum and wizards are the elite but have likely never even interacted with a muggle.
He also wants Lily to come with him. Because he thinks she’s different. (Not a healthy mindset at all. But to him, she is the exception to the rule). Slytherin would not be a safe place for Lily (nor the safe place that he is expecting it to be for him). Though, I think if she’d been in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff it would have gone over better to him than Gryffindor.
The rift here begins, I think for a couple of reasons. 1) James and his group are now trying to interact with lily. With James of course later in the years growing romantically interested as well. And while we know that Lily is rejecting James’ friendship and romantic advances throughout school, Severus has a lot of mental health issues. Thus, I think his issues stem more from jealousy and fear. Fear that Lily will one day decide that he isn’t worth her time. Maybe she’ll think that James and his gang are in fact better. And that would leave him alone again because 2) Slytherin is not the Sanctuary he thought it would be. Slytherin was supposed to be his home away from “home”. He’d be amongst his kind. Except that Slytherin is a pureblood and very rich house. Most of the purebloods come from Old Money. Classism is a massive part of that. So not only is Severus not a pureblood, but his family is poor. He wears hand-me-downs that are often described as feminine blouses, meaning they’re probably coming from his mother. Add to that, his only friend is a muggle-born. Which he is obviously judged and mocked for. But he’s loyal to Lily. To a fault, honestly.
So he’s not only severely separated from his only friend from the start, but bullied by both the marauders AND his own housemates in Slytherin. And unfortunately, Lily is the cause to some degree on both sides. (that is not to say it is her fault. IT IS NOT HER FAULT. James’s decisions were his own, as well as the actions of those in Slytherin around Severus. And Severus’s actions in response are his own).
Now at some point, his feelings turned romantic. And unfortunately, Severus did not have many sources to look at for what it really means to love someone. Because his parents certainly aren’t the answer. And everything else would be at a distant. Also, again because he has so little and because of those fears of losing her, he is slightly possessive about that. He sees James as a threat.
And he’s having to find some way to fit in when it comes to Slytherin. And he finds that with potions. A particularly difficult class, but he didn’t struggle. And he was quite adept at defensive magic as well as dark magic, thus starting to give him value to his peers. And he of course starts to fall into the classic “bullies are often people bullied themselves.” He starts to partake in bullying the muggleborns, using the word, mudblood, etc. just to fit in amongst his own peers. And Severus is not stupid. He’s also not blind (well, in some ways he is). He is bound to see that pureblood rhetoric against muggleborns is bullshit. His issues lies with muggles themselves more so. And still a lot of wizards. At this point in his life, he’s become bitter, quick to anger and defense. Anyone who does him the slightest wrong is against him. He’s learned not to really forgive.
So let’s talk about the event. Snape’s worst memory. Where James is tormenting Severus, yet again. When Lily comes to his defense, and James tried to blackmail Lily into a date by using tormenting Severus, in a moment of weakness he lashed out at her. He used the term mudblood in regards to her. (And was then publically humiliated and shamed for it by James and the group).
Yes. He waited in the hallway all night for her outside the Dormitory. To apologize. Regardless of anything, he did not want to hurt her. So he apologized. And when she rejected him (Which i think had less to do with him using the word against her and rather the fact that there had been a rift growing for years and this was just he last straw). But he accepted that. I think he knew their friendship was over and had been for quite some time. He left her alone, and thus was completely intergrated into Slytherin and those who were molding him and shaping him.
Now. Just because they stopped being friends, doesn’t mean the caring stopped. They had their childhood memories they formed together. Severus was always going to have those feelings for Lily. It does not make it obsession. And I think of it like this.
I have a friend, who was more the Snape to my Lily. She was kind of an awful person, awful friend, and there came a point we cut each other out. (I’m not saying i’m entirely innocent in the destruction of that friendship. But I do view her actions as far more Severus’s toxic side than my own. But that’s besides the point). I did not stop caring about her altogether. Especially not immediately. Especially not right out of school. I still think of our friendship often. I think that if she came to me needing something, I would likely help her, even if I have a feeling she wouldn’t do the same for me.
So that is what I view Severus’s feelings towards Lily. Except stronger. Because Lily was the only light in his life. She was the only good thing. The only positive influence he really had. Adults were never on his side. His peers were rarely on his side. So losing Lily, he clung to what little he had. The death eaters who took him in under their wings over the years. Those who were promising him power and control, something he rarely had in his life.
But that care is what got him. He heard that part of the prophecy, and of course he kept track of his friend. Wizarding circles are small anyway. It probably spread without intent. He was scared for her. So he did his job, reporting the prophecy. But begged for her life. In his fear he didn’t think about James. The man that ruined his life and tormented him every chance he got. And he didn’t think about her child, not born yet. Because his reactions were emotional in knowing that Lily’s life was in danger.
So he went to Dumbledore to have her protected. And yes. Then her family was brought to his attention. And he did not hesitate to agree to keep them safe too. Listen. If Snape really wanted Lily for himself. If he really didn’t care about her at all, it would have been a fight to protect, at the very least, James. He would have argued against it. He instantly agreed because someone reached to the logic in him. And he agreed to risk his life to be Dumbledore’s spy. He signed on to do that for the rest of his life. He signed on to do whatever it took to protect Lily and her Family. So when it was just Harry left, he did everything he could. (that doesn’t mean he went about it right. But he did do his best to protect Harry). Until his very last breath. If it was just about Lily, he would have stopped the moment she died.
None of this was about sleeping with her. None of this was about winning her over or having her. He accepted that he fucked those things up. He accepted he had no place in her life. This was about making up for his mistakes. Or at least, trying to feel like he could. I don’t think even if he lived to see Harry win and everything, that he would think he had. But he certainly seemed to be trying to show he knew he was wrong, and trying to do the right thing. Total change was never possible for Severus. But the fact that he was even able to admit he was wrong in joining Voldemort and turn to the right side, is a massive step for him.

Lily Evans is Not a Bad Friend: A Closer Look at the Courtyard Scene
The courtyard conversation in The Prince’s Tale is not a scene I like. I hate the decision to set the Highly Amusing Murder Prank before the Snape’s Worst Memory incident, in my opinion shafting almost every participant’s character arc. I still hate that. That has not changed. But I also, and I am far from alone in this, hated what seemed to be Lily’s atrocious treatment of the boy she called her best friend, taking his bully’s word over his, and blowing off news that he nearly died. Except I’ve just examined it again, prompted by reading several essays and fanfictions based on that same interpretation, written by some of the snazziest people in the fandom – and I think we’re all wrong.
To come to that, from what I’ve seen, nearly universally-accepted conclusion, you have to assume that Lily and Severus have not previously spoken about the Prank, and that the version of events Lily heard came from James Potter. But neither assumption is warranted.
I had previously assumed, as a lot of people do, that this conversation was the first one the friends had had about the Prank since it happened. That doesn’t really hold up, though. It’s been at least a day or two – Lily says it took place “the other night,” not “last night.” Still, it’s possible they haven’t gotten a chance to talk since then. However, if what Lily heard about “what happened the other night” is the first clue she’s gotten that anything happened that night, you’d think she would open the conversation by asking him about it. Instead, she only brings it up when Snape himself mentions the Marauders. It’s not unreasonable that she doesn’t ask if he’s okay or for his side of the story; she already knows he wasn’t hurt, and he’s had his chance to explain. Her reproachful “I heard what happened the other night” is more likely to mean “I found out about that thing you refused to tell me about” than “I just learned something awful happened to you.”
Why wouldn’t Snape give her his own account? I don’t think he could.
In PoA, Lupin’s account of the Prank tells us that, following the incident, Snape was “forbidden by Dumbledore to tell anybody” about Lupin’s lycanthropy – and possibly about the Prank itself. This could mean that Snape simply made a promise and was expected to keep it or face punishment. Or it could refer to a magical gag order, perhaps something like the Tongue-Tying Curse put on Grimmauld Place by Moody to keep Snape from revealing its location. His incoherence later in the courtyard scene, attributed by the narration to his “bitterness and dislike” could potentially also be related to such a restriction.
If the only thing keeping Snape from telling anybody were his own honor, he would tell Lily. We know this because he is trying to tell Lily. Dropping heavy-handed hints about his werewolf theory is a clear violation of the spirit of Dumbledore’s injunction. If he could say, “Remus Lupin is a werewolf and he nearly killed me,” he would do it, so it seems he cannot.
Now, about that theory…
Lily responds to Snape’s leading questions about Remus as though they’ve been down this road before and she’s sick of it. “I know your theory,” she says. Which is odd. If this established, well-known Werewolf Theory of Snape’s predates the Prank, why would he knowingly go down a tunnel to follow a werewolf who is about to transform? The whole point of the incident was that Sirius knew the danger he was sending Snape into, but Snape didn’t. So, either the theory Lily is talking about is something other than lycanthropy (unlikely) or it’s a very recent development. The Prank happened just “the other night,” but Lily is already weary enough of the topic to call Severus “obsessed.” It seems like Snape has been desperately trying to get around his gag order. He’s probably been answering all questions about “what happened the other night” with werewolf hints. In his mind, he’s trying to explain in the only way he can, but Lily would see it as an attempt to deflect and avoid her questions, the way he really is deflecting and avoiding her concerns about Avery and Mulciber.
So, she gets the story from another source, one she apparently considers reliable enough that she presents their version to Severus as hard fact. Most people assume this story came from James Potter or his friends, either directly or through the gossip mill, and therefore criticize Lily for taking the word of the boy she calls “an arrogant toerag” over that of her best friend. But, again, that assumption doesn’t bear out.
For one thing, are the Marauders really likely to circulate a version of events that includes the fact that there’s a “tunnel by the Whomping Willow” and something “down there” that could kill someone on a full moon night? Sure, Snape’s Worst Memory shows they can be cavalier about discussing secrets where they might be overheard, but they have just been reminded of the dangers of a breach of secrecy. Are they really going to spread around the existence of the Willow tunnel, when that’s exactly the information that nearly got Snape killed? Do they really want people to pay close attention to who and what goes in and out of that tunnel? And do they want to be caught by teachers sharing this secret after what just happened with Sirius?
Additionally, Lily presents the information like it came from a trustworthy source. Considering her view of James Potter, she’s likely to give his accounts of his own accomplishments about the same credence as, say, Gilderoy Lockhart’s. If the tale came directly from him, she wouldn’t state it as unbiased fact. The same thing applies if she heard it through the grapevine. She would begin, “People are saying...” instead of “I heard what happened.”
Even if she were gullible enough to just accept gossip as gospel, her actions suggest the story isn’t common knowledge. She “drop[s] her voice” before introducing this new subject. Why doesn’t she want to be overheard? It can’t be that she doesn’t want people to hear her upbraid Severus, because she’s been doing that the whole conversation. It must be the content she’s worried about, which means it isn’t a story that’s already circulating.
My guess is that she heard it from the faculty, most likely by eavesdropping on teachers’ private conversation, but possibly by asking Slughorn, who has been known to share behind-the-scenes Hogwarts info with his favorite students. Information from a teacher wouldn’t be inherently suspect the way student gossip or Potter’s boasting would, and the story fits with her interpretation of Severus’ behavior. Since she has no reason to think the Werewolf Theory has anything to do with the Tunnel Incident (because why wouldn’t Severus just say so?) it does look ungrateful of him to hide the fact that James saved his life by making up nasty rumors about his sickly friend. She didn’t mention it until Snape forced the issue himself by harping on Lupin, in the same way that she didn’t bring up Petunia’s letter to Dumbledore until Petunia insulted the world she’d been so eager to join. (The similarity of these incidents – she even lowers her voice both times – may be another indication that Lily found out both secrets by snooping.)
So, contrary to popular belief, Lily Evans is not being a bad best friend to Snape in this scene. She’s just fed up with him distracting her with Scooby-Doo mysteries when she’s trying to hold an intervention.
((It’s possible this is old news to the fandom. Apologies if that’s the case. But I’ve literally never once seen this interpretation anywhere, and I’ve read a lot of Snape and Lily fic and meta. People have varying views on whether Lily’s behavior is justified and whether it’s intentional on Rowling’s part, but I’ve always seen it presented as a given that she is condemning her best friend on the word of James Potter, without giving Severus a chance to defend himself. With a Bunch of AUs Combined, I am CAPTAIN PLANET-W8, wrong fandom
(Askbox is too small so I guess it’s time to show my AU spewing username I guess lol 0///0 hi…)
AUs & HCs: NotaMarauder!Remus (Possible Future Snupin) + Jily Didn’t Date-Marry Drunk1NiteStand to make Harry + DiffDads Lily&Petunia + Resurrected FaeLily AU
A Post Idea So Long that it’s almost like a Fic Outline: An AU where Remus was never a Marauder could actually is super interesting, because it has a spiraling implications on canon. Remus, Severus and Lily is like the sweet trifecta of book & magic nerds. Also like, being friends with Remus would drive Sev to research Werewolf remedies and care? Also be Concerned about his friend’s life.
But like, I’m not sure that Lily and Sev would do the exact same thing that the CanonMarauders do (learn to be Animagi and leave the Shrieking Shack w/ Remus even when he’s not supposed to). Maybe Severus trying to make Wolfsbane more accessible/cheaper? Or better yet, both him and Lily approach this like ethical scientists.
But on the other hand as a frequent consumer of Werewolf fiction I don’t really like how traditional and human-centric the version of Werewolves that JKR used in her ‘verse? Like, what is a werewolf like when they’re emotionally stable, feel secure, healthy? Why would they be hostile to humans in general? Why generalized feral hostility? Is it actually ingrained or a result of underlying mishandling of socialization/emotional-social support? Because obviously, Canon!James who turned into a freaking Stag didn’t get eaten so there must be something to the state of Lycanthropy. Is it a possibly segue into being a Skinwalker? Lost or suppressed information?
Would Lupin theoretically be able to keep his mind and not attack his friends or have the choice overall with better, calmer support?
Back to the AU, something that would keep Lily from drifting out of her friendship with Severus could be Remus? I’m remembering that whole, Remus Morality post thing you referenced a while back. And intense loyalty seems like a thing Remus could bring to the table? I’m not sure how else not being a Marauder would affect his personality though. Thoughts?
But since Sirius doesn’t have a Werewolf to Prank Severus with anymore I wonder what would happen then? Would it be more James or Sirius or Peter trying to snoop into where the three go during the full moon nearly every month? How would that spiral? Sev and Lily trying to close ranks around Remus, whom they don’t quite know if Dumbledore is willing to back that horse for too long compared to those with “higher” status like, James & Sirius?
Maybe a part of Sev’s radicalization that drove a spike between his and Remus’ friendship could be Severus trying to court Remus to the Dark Lord’s party? Because they were recruiting both poor and marginalized populations after all, also I *think* Remus is a pureblood technically? I forget. And Remus would’ve gotten so PISSED because he knows that would be condoning/supporting all the bad things people say about Lily, one of his only other very close friends, plus a bunch of other bad things that DEs are doing.
The friendship split between Lily and Severus would be longer, more protracted and hurtful, not just one big blowup and a final death knell slip of the tongue. But Lily and Remus trying to reel their friend back in on top of all their other baggage (they are destined, by social constructs and WW societal standards, for mediocrity, struggle and poverty after all) and Failing. And that hurts.
And when they all graduate, Lily shortly after joins the Order, or is invited because I guess they want skilled people, and Lily Was Exceptional. But she brings along Remus, who James, Sirius & Peter (and an 4th OC or something if we need to replace, but not really tbh) may distrust him because of the thing that happened when they followed? If James /actually/ changed (that Felix Felicis-enhanced talking thing) though he might be not be shitty about it though, but I can’t really imagine Sirius letting it go what with his terrible maladaptive coping mechanisms and all. Remus might get outed among the Order, maybe, idk. That could sow distrust of him, and why they don’t tell when they shove Lily and James into a cottage with their Bastard child together in hiding.
Then it goes like that from canon, Peter is made Secret Keeper, with Sirius as the obvious decoy keeper. Severus tries to curry favor from his grunt position as a DE and accidentally spells the death knell for his estranged friend Lily, is flipped when he finallyyyy realized he’d done super-fucked up and goes to Dumbledore.
Then James & Lily get attacked by Voldie & DEs, James takes a couple DEs down before dying via AK, Lily had been researching a bunch of dark/new magic things to protect herself and her kid (who she deliberated on and eventually decided to keep). She takes a bunch of DEs down, and gives Voldemort a run for his money, but lets down her guard when Peter shows up because up until this point, despite the bad blood in school, she’s known him as a comrade in the Order.
Peter basically cripples her in a surprise attack, and then Voldemort comes up to gloat, monologue and eventually finish the job. Lily spits in his face while dying.
The underlying new ritual/shield/magic-whatever Lily cooked up while in hiding goes on not quite as planned because it overlaps with Voldemort’s accidental-Horcrux making that basically ghostifies him. But Lily still dies the first time.
Cue Sirius getting falsely accused and Azkaban’d, Harry going to the Dursleys because supposed Blood Wards (which actually would be fine with just Harry himself and what he considers home I guess, maybe). Remus gets cut out of the picture because of his financial and career instability, also Werewolfism and other dumb prejudice, so he’s out of the loop and isn’t told about Sev being a flipped spy either.
Cue a few years later, turns out that Lily’s biodad is actually a Fae of some kind that she had minor contact with him through postcards and letters during her life. But eventually, he pitched in on some magical doohickery for the magical design stuff she did while in hiding in Godric’s Hollow. Then everything kicks off again a mostly Amnesiac FaeLily crawls out of her grave and gets a burning treewand branch of a Groot-Arm.
Somehow this culminates FaeLily accidentally getting the band back together and yoinking Harry. Then cue shenanigans and reconciliation and character development/interactions and possibly romantic Snupin and maybe an earned happy ending somewhere because my heart is soft and I’m a total weenie and this post got way longer than I thought it’d be lol. Overall thoughts? Impressions? Anything I missed while stringing these half-baked ideas together? X3
Thanks for reading and responding to so many of my posts. Your takes and posts are always a delight to read! <3333
Part2 of the AU Multi-fecta Thing I Sent Earlier
Some stuff I forgot:
-Tempted to name this Sweet Insane Combo of an AU: 2 Gryffindors and a Slytherin Walk into a Traincar
-Maybe add some shades of the Cons of Cokeworth AU idea (yes I sent that too, I’m literally a neverending fountain of AUs and theories for literally every fandom I get into, it’s a gift). –Lily constantly worries over money (Petunia’s biodad’s the gambler?) and is bitter over the way society is structured, leading her to grow into an excellent, Hard-working Con & Swindler-of-those-that-deserve-it (like how she’s been fleecing James, Sirius, Peter and others for all 7 of her Hogwarts years while trying to maintain good PR without being known as a money grubber or a thief bc Anonymity is Key)
-TBH i feel like she’d just cook up a plan to live with her 2 friends after school because “it’s cheaper” and she figures that they could’ve kept up the Werewolf research stuff easier by being housemates, but hilariously and sadly forgetting to tell said 2 friends about her plans before starting to work her ass off to scrape up as much money as possible. –“We all know Rems would guilt himself into living like a fucking hobo, and Cokeworth is a place where dreams go to die, so of course we’re getting a fucking house.”
-Yanno, then the AU-version of the Friendship split and Voldemort faction gains even more traction with the 1st WW Civil War going on.
-Trawling through the wiki again, Remus’ parents basically isolated him a pretty unhealthy amount I feel (like they probably thought they were doing the right thing at the time, which solved an immediate problem, but ends up compounding into a long-term host of issues)? Which I don’t think did Lupin’s socialization and emotional stabilitygrowth sloshing down into his Werewolf form any favors perhaps?
-So basically Remus refused to move back in with his dad (because he didn’t want to burden his dad I guess), despite him being alive, so Remus living in poverty-plus probably in and out of homelessess as well as the medical and security complications of being a werewolf without access to necessary resources? Also okay I forgot that Remus was a Halfblood too, whoops
-There’s an Irony in that Severus is the most human (species-wise) between the 3 AU Friends, what with Werewolf!Remus and Post-Resurrection Fae!Lily
-There’d be a whole mystery as to the intentions of Lily’s mysterious Fae Parent father(?), which may or may not be good intentions, they just don’t really know atm
…Okay I think that’s it… Whew, thoughts?
X'3
Nice to finally meet you @markala5
ok wow this is a lot. first of all i love it and it feels whole so i don’t know what i can say. it’s the found family trope subverted a little because things fall apart but they get back together when lily is resurrected. and voldemort and his death eaters get to be the big bad. plus dumbledore as the leader of the order who is starting to realise that harry needs to end voldemort and his horcruxes but lily can’t imagine letting her child do that because she’s grown to love him after forgetting him so instead of the golden trio, it’s lily, severus and remus finding the horcruxes but harry needs to die and the three of them are frantically researching a solution but it needs to happen. they send him off in a manner similar to canon except they’re alive and later they see harry’s body and he’s so small and it’s so heartbreaking until he runs from the death eaters.
this au has so much potential

Your headcanons about Severus and Lily's children? Particularly how Sev interacts with them *heart eyes*
Thank you @troo-kidd :)
- When Lily told him she was pregnant, Severus stared at her, unable to form any coherent words. He was terrified, terrified he wouldn’t be good enough for Lily’s child, terrified he’d be like his father.
-At first Lily was worried, thinking that perhaps Severus didn’t want to have children. But then, almost as soon as tears started to well up in her eyes, she remembered Severus’ abusive father. She hugged him and kissed him, wiping away the tears on his cheeks and reassuring him that he would be a great father.
-Severus was overprotective of Lily throughout her whole pregnancy. She would give her more than five potions a day, claiming one was for pregnancy vitamins, one for her nausea, one to avoid any problem or miscarriage... he would cook dinner and give her a dirty look if she did as much as try to go shopping when she was at her eighth month.
-The boy was born on the 10th of October, and Severus had spent the whole day pacing the corridor at St. Mungo’s, worried sick. He got to hold her hand in the last hour, and he wiped off the sweat from her forehead, quietly reassuring her. When he got to hold his baby he instantly fell in love with him, unable to understand how he had been capable of creating such a beautiful thing.
-The first year was a nightmare. Severus was completely inept at understanding why the baby was crying, and though he actively tried, Lily was much better. Severus would then scurry away and prepare some potions to help with the baby’s needs, so that he wouldn’t feel too useless.
-The boy turned out to have his hair and Lily’s eyes and freckles. He was, later on in life, a very quiet boy, a bit shy, though he really wanted to start Transfiguration, as it was the field of magic he was most interest about.
-When the boy was three Lily got pregnant again. It wasn’t as though they had talked about having another child, but Severus knew that although Lily was worried they would end up having a bad relationship like hers and Petunia’s, she didn’t want their boy to be alone. And Severus... well, Severus was desperately wishing for a daughter.
-it turned out that Lily was indeed pregnant with a daughter. Severus was overwhelmed with joy, and this time he was more relaxed around Lily, less worried about her pregnancy, but still overly protective. He’d look after their boy so that she wouldn’t have to, he’d go shopping and he’d cook and clean.
-their girl was born in June, and she looked exactly like her mother. Severus was glad their children hadn’t taken up his worst features, and he couldn’t have wished for better. His daughter was very lively and sweet, just like her mother. This time around Severus was much more skilled at caring for a child, and his daughter seemed Sev’s weak spot as well as hers, to the point where her first word turned out to be “Dad”. Lily was filled with joy in seeing her husband so happy and caring, his usual detached demeanour and usual coldness completely gone whenever he was with them.
-When their boy went to Hogwarts he was put in Slytherin. Severus was a bit worried, even though Voldemort had been defeated, but it turned out that the climate in Slytherin house had changed for the better. His son was happy to be there, and he was very skilled in Transfiguration, but alas, not very good as a Potioneer. Severus was mildly disappointed when his son appeared bored at his attempt at teaching him potions at home, but Lily convinced him that there were still subjects in which he excelled.
-His daughter was sorted into Gryffindor, and unlike her brother, she loved Potions. Severus was over the moon when he saw how good she was, and they would talk about it for hours, locked in the lab, experimenting.
-His daughter would often hug him, and Severus couldn’t help but spoil her. He loved his son very much, but he had a very close relationship with Lily, like he did with his daughter.
-When she was in her fifth year, Severus got to meet her boyfriend, a Ravenclaw. He narrowed his eyes, looming over the poor boy, staring at him and studying him, ultimately deciding that he wasn’t good enough for her. The boy was too scared anyway, and he left her.
-She was very upset about it, and cried for days. All she wanted was her father’s approval, and he had just scared him to the point where he had left her.
-Lily told Severus he had been too harsh with the boy, and that their daughter was now very hurt. Severus pursed his lips, knocking on his daughter’s door and closing it behind him. She was laying on the bed, her eyes swollen and red. Severus felt awful.
- «Forgive me. Hurting you was never my intention. I was just trying to protect you» he said in the end, and she pursed her lips like he used to do.
«If you hadn’t scared him, he would-»
«No, he wouldn’t. Had he really cared about you, he would have stayed. He doesn’t deserve you» he said sternly, though his eyes were sad. He had indeed messed up, and he didn’t want to see her hurting over some stupid brat who didn’t deserve one little inch of her, he wanted her to find the right person.
-She looked at him, surprised, and in he end, she was happy her father was so protective of her. She hugged him tightly, and he kissed the top of her head, closing his eyes as he held her.
-When his son brought home a Slytherin boy with brown hair and blue eyes, nervously introducing him as his boyfriend, Lily smirked smugly, as she had seen it coming for ages, and she smiled at her son, taking his hand and reassuring him that to them, it didn’t matter.
-Severus simply stared at the brown-haired boy, and after having decided that he was enough for his son, he simply nodded. He didn’t care who his son loved, as long as the boy was enough for him.
-The next boy his daughter brought home was a Hufflepuff, and he seemed very shy and kind. Severus decided he seemed good for her, and she smiled at him, her eyes glistening as she hugged him. Severus scowled, not liking that public display of affection that probably made him look like an idiot in front of the Hufflepuff boy, but deciding to let it go.

Why Severus Snape was never a hero, and didn’t deserve a redemption arc, and Draco Malfoy did. Part one.
What follows is perhaps controversial, definitely spoilers, and 100% my opinion. So, fight me if you want, but be prepared to cite your source.
JKR truly thought she had played the ultimate game and pulled the rug out from underneath us Potterheads. Sure, I was surprised to learn that dear ol’ bat of the dungeons Severus Snape was in fact a double agent BUT when I really looked at everything he did, and his own admitted reasons, I wasn’t sold on his hero status. In fact, I felt bad for Regulus Black who, without unrequited love as a motivation, learned the error of his ways, discovered the Dark Lord’s plan, and sought to stop him. If that wasn’t enough RAB risked his own life, the life of a pureblood wizard, and not the life of his house elf, who for all intents and purposes was property. RAB was a real hero who didn’t get as much credit or love as he deserved. But back to Snape.
We learn from HBP through DH that Snape had a difficult childhood. His father was abusive, his mother a battered woman, and he was a socially awkward child with magical powers he was taught to be ashamed of. Tough life. Then he meets Lily, a little girl from a muggle family who actually wants to be his friend and shares his secret of magic. They become best friends and endure the ridicule and bullying meted out by Petunia, Lily’s older sister.
When they finally get to Hogwarts they are sorted into different houses. This is portrayed, in the film and in the books, as a difficult thing. However, we also see that Lily wasn’t going to let something so arbitrary as dorm assignments get in the way of her longest, and at that time, most important friendship. Over time Snape develops feelings beyond friendship for Lily. Now, this isn’t uncommon and perhaps he would have moved beyond them if he wasn’t an emotionally stunted child. But I digress. This is only truly problematic later in his life when Lily turns to James, Snapes bully.
When Snape lashes out at Lily, calling her a slur, it is simply because he is a wounded person, having been bullied and humiliated, but this did not stem from a place of jealousy towards James. It wasn’t until later, when Snape had already turned to the Dark Arts that Lily and James became an item. James had to change who he was before Lily considered him as a possible romantic partner. Snape never sought to change who he was to inspire Lily’s affection and because he was selfish couldn’t accept Lily’s friendship, a friendship he had cherished as a child, and instead pushed her away.
JKR herself stated that if he wasn’t in love with Lily Snape would have done nothing to help Harry and would not have turned double agent. While that sounds like his love for Lily was SO strong and that he was SO devoted, what it really means it that at his core, past the obsessive BS, was racism and hatred. The only thing more powerful than Snapes hatred for those he deemed beneath him was his obsessive need to possess Lily’s love.
Harry Potter was only a child when he first met Severus Snape. Already Harry was weary of the older wizard and Snape did nothing to disavow him of this feeling. In fact, Snape went out of his way to punish Harry for simply existing. Instead of focusing on the fact that Harry was Lily’s son, the last piece of her left on the earth, he instead focused on James. James Potter may have been a bully, a reformed one at that, but he was also just a child making foolish decisions and had grown past that by the time Harry was born. Snape did not grow or move past his childhood and adolescent failings and hurts.
I am not saying that bullying doesn’t have a lasting effect, it does, but that doesn’t give a victim of bullying license to bully. Especially not an adult to a child. When I first reread the Harry Potter books as an adult I was appalled at the abusive scenes laid out in the early books by the Dursley’s and Snape. It was amazing to me that this was simply a plot device and not even the loving and eternally motherly Mrs. Weasley did anything to intervene. Even when her own children recount the terrible way Harry was treated by his relatives.
Sorry for the tangent but I’m still mad.
When Lily and James died protecting their son Snape races to their home to see if he can save Lily. He has no concern for James, who she loved and married, or her son, was only a baby. His only concern was for Lily and what she was to him. He swore to Dumbledore that he would do what he must to keep the boy alive, because Dumbledore told him he needed to and that Lily would want that (I have my own opinions about Dumbledore), and he agreed only so long as no one would know that he cared about Harry at all. If he did at all. Snape needn’t have been a double agent, he had no way of knowing Voldemort would rise again, and he was already a professor at Hogwarts, the safest place to be when it came to Voldemort. Snape could have kept Harry safe, been open about his involvement, and still accomplished his goals. Sure, the Order wouldn’t have had a double agent, at least not one in Snape, but who’s to say what alternative would have arisen?

I think I know how the Marauders Map ended up in Filch’s office.
Filch had been at Hogwarts under the title of Caretaker from approximately 1973, which was - coincidentally - two years after the Marauders begin their residency at Hogwarts themselves. Rather than being the long-suffering if torture-obsessed squib that most of us think of him as, I recently read @wizardlogic and his art history purist version of regular old Filch which I LOVE>>>>
Anyway, I know HPWiki goes on to theorise that it was Snape (subtle) who was the ultimate betrayer of the magical map and passed it into the hands of an otherwise controlling and under-qualified abuser. I seek to dispute this with a possibly projective, emotionally strung and fairly assumptive rebuttal. Thank you fo reading thus far. *High five*
As much as the word a l w a y s still brings more than a single tear to my eye, I feel strongly for every single woman who’s had a beloved friend abuse their relationship by pressing unwarranted feelings, leaned into a dangerous vice or group of friends against better judgement, been fighting their own demons without succumbing to the “dark side” of this friend and even been willing to lay down their life to help them only to be hurt.
Hurt people hurt people you know? I know these people. These people have hurt and maybe even scarred me. I still love these people. It’s a soft spot you want to protect. You want to protect them. It literally NEVER ENDS. You know the theory that at the time of their murder, Lily was pregnant? You know that same theory that says Lily and Severus had made a tentative amends and he was named godfather of the new little fluttering snitch in Lily’s womb? That’s what I mean! It’s like no matter whether Snape was turning a new leaf, or being manipulative, or if he was being manipulated by others - any sincerity no matter how manufactured, would have worked on Lily. She had so many well-intentioned sister inclinations that were being unfulfilled by a sister who had cut her out, she had such a strong need for family, and Snape was her family too, no matter how poorly he treated her it would be the same way Lily would have forgiven Petunia in an instant. It’s why we love the Marauders, but we love the Marauders plus Lily even more.
Family isn’t always nice. They know the boundaries with each other. They know when breaking them will hurt; like Mudblood spilled across the grass. We may not have ever met her in the pages of Harry Potter’s life properly - she wasn’t even 22 years old when she died - I’m no doubt projecting, but I know that fiery red-head wouldn’t have let the embarrassment of that nerve-edged afternoon go without her own kid of punishment. At the time of the big fight we remember from the flashback James’ threat of removing Snape’s undergarments (another trans-theory I have a particularly fond affinity for) - we remember Lily’s disgust at being blackmailed into saving her friend from any further humiliation, and then her heartbreak and anger at being attacked in a different way - from an unlikely source hanging in her mind in wait for her defence. She’s sure to recover, the word isn’t new and she’s very familiar with the new crowd her friend is spending more and more time around. It’s only a gut feeling and it’s NO WHERE NEAR the kind of horrific return of the not distant-enough fear of Grindelwald’s dogma which would have seen her family enslaved and herself treated possibly with a kind of suspicion that was really a very real metaphor of the same Cold War we were experiencing in the muggle world. She was scared but not scared enough. She felt responsible not only for Snape’s treatment but also by his downward spiral - possibly a metaphor for the same depression Jo tried to inspire with a Dementor literally years later.
Lily is a loving, empathetic but more importantly, a JUST person. Remember that her most defining quality is being a Gryffindor - they are just, they don’t care about rules - they care about justice. Lily is the one person who feels that she can see both sides - both faces of Severus Snape, a boy she loves fiercely like a brother, who she feels responsible for, who she feels a familiarity which entitles her to serve justice not just to him - but also in his defence. Remember she might have a strong and loving friendship already with Lupin/Sirius (and Peter? Very little fanfic seems to be written on THAT potential character-shattering-death-induced-heartbreak???) *BUT* she still has a pretty big wall up ready for James, a boy who is not just partaking in an adolescent rivalry with a brother she cares deeply for, but a sensitivity for a version of herself, who misses her sister and who resides, without her obvious realisation, in this child-hood friend.
Lily has never been afraid of anything except the fear of losing those who she loves, and even then she was a force to be reckoned with which I’m sure we can all agree with. How else to truely reap the kind of justice she was seeking on behalf of her friend, no matter how estranged, but to weasel her way into the perpetrator’s life and find a truely sweet way to punish his emotional abuse of her? It may have been the 70s, but women have held a sort of collective rage at being expected to resist the urge to react with whatever indifference, hurt, pain or disgust felt from unwelcome advances because of society especially in public for long enough that I’m surprised we don’t all sport red hair as metaphor to this collective furnace of rage building within. Asking her to date him in lieu of her friend’s public humiliation? She would definitely be going one better. She already had a hunch that there was a secret between those four boys and she was too controlling of her own emotions to allow the hurt of that w o r d to get in the way of her scheming. All she would be doing was exacting the same justice that James whateverthehellwasinthatfuckingmessofhair’shead Potter deserved.
It didn’t matter that she couldn’t yet imagine a future where she would speak to Severus again, it didn’t matter that James’ best friends were boys she too had begun to think of as her own friends. It frankly didn’t cross her mind that what they were doing was protecting each other with this thing they were obviously hiding, let alone protecting only one in their midst. O H NO. She was single minded to the point of clarity. Only one would be going down and she had just the womanly wiles to get this job done.

I Will Always Be With You (Harry Potter Fanfic) Ch2
Chapter 2: Question
Harry woke up that morning at 6 am, like every morning since he remembered, he felt his body aching, after all, his uncle was rather vicious with his punishment the day before. To be honest, he deserved it, another weird thing had happened the day before, he couldn't explain how the roses had started to open and close in a little dance, it had made him smile until his uncle came… it got worse when he said the forbidden word "magic," but it was magic, or at least it looks like it, why did he uncle keep saying that magic wasn't real if it was happening in front of him?
Anyway, he couldn't change his uncle, it was not like he could just ask some supernatural force for someone that cared to come and pick him up, right? He stood tall, well, as tall as he was, which wasn't much, and got into the kitchen, using a little stool to be able to reach the kitchen and make breakfast. When he failed to make some of the bacon right, leaving it for too long and burning it, his aunt Petunia took his arm and placed an ice on it, leaving it to burn his bare skin, it hurt so badly… but he couldn't cry out loud because it would make everything even worse so he cried silently before going to put on his "going to school shirt" and some shoes.
Once outside, he realized he had to wear a jumper, he tried to go and get it, but his uncle pushed him out of the house, so hard that he lost his balance and ended up on the cold floor. After a couple hours of classes they had recess and Harry was being bullied again, so he ran as much as he could, he hid in a broom closet, he always felt safe on small spaces and closets, Dudley wouldn't bother to get him on those, he barely fitted in one… once he was safe he started thinking about, even though he didn't believe that it was going to help, praying to someone, some kind of fate to send him a person to get him out of the Dursley's house, he decided that it wouldn't hurt to try and prayed for the remaining of the recess hoping it would help.
Severus Snape stepped into the headmaster's office and sat down on one of the chairs that were laid in front of the grandiose table, he looked at the headmaster with a questioning look while said old man walked towards the chair on the other side of the table, "it is a pleasure to have you here my boy… lemon drop? Tea?" he said as a way to break the ice as well as being polite, Severus, with the same politeness declined the offer deciding to ask the important questions about the child as soon as possible to be able to retrieve him as soon as possible "thank you, headmaster, but I came here to ask you about Harry Potter" Severus could have sworn that the statement definitely had been a shook to the headmaster but the old man was good at hiding his emotions so he couldn't be sure.
"I was hoping I could check on him since he is Lily's son and I vowed to protect him…" Severus tried to look as good intentioned as possible even if he knew that he was going to take the boy away from that family. "My boy… you don't have to worry at all, Minerva can tell you, Harry is in the best house, living a good life" Dumbledore let slip a piece of information that, Severus assumed, didn't think the black haired man would use, so Minerva will tell him, he was convinced, she cared about Lily and James so she would not mind someone watching over their little child, it was Severus time to speak up "thank you for your reassures headmaster, if you don't mind, I will leave now, I need to prepare some potions" he stood up and made his leave, robes blowing behind him like large black wings.
His next stop was at Professor McGonagall's office, he sat down on another chair in front of a less imposing desk but this time he did accept the tea, the elderly woman was a very dear friend to him and he enjoyed her company very much, he explained the situation to her, including the dream and the conversation with the headmaster, because she trusted her with his secrets and knew that she was concerned about Harry as well. "Severus, I am so happy that you have decided to listen to Lily… the kid lives in the number 4 Privet Drive in Surrey, let me write it down for you" she wrote down the address and gave it to him "I will go now, thank you Minerva" he smiled for about half of a second before living the office and the castle, walking to through the main gates to be able to apparate.

Parents’ names, backgrounds, occupations:
Dudley Dursley - Biological Father - He is the son of Vernon Dursley and Petunia Dursley (nee Evans, deceased as of 2020) and maternal cousin of Harry Potter. He is a muggle and was a bully as a child, especially towards Harry, which he has since come to regret. He had an affair with Samoan witch - unaware of her heritage at the time - and Bernard was the result. Dudley asked his cousin to take Bernard, to be named James, as his own when he started showing signs of magic so that he would not receive the same treatment Harry did growing up. He currently works as a salesman in the position Vernon held before he retired. He had another affair which resulted in James’ muggleborn half-brother, Fletcher (who he does not know about). Dudley got married in 2007 and has no other children.
Talia Leapei - Biological Mother - She is a pureblood, Samoan witch. James does not know who her parents are. She had an affair with Dudley Dursley early 2003, resulting in her pregnancy. She kept him for a few weeks before leaving him at Dudley’s doorstep. In 2021, she wrote to her son to get in touch and they have since been in contact. She is currently a florist in Samoa, is unmarried and has no other children. James met her in 2023.
Harry Potter - Adopted Father - He is the son of James Potter and Lily Potter (nee Evans) - both are deceased - and the maternal cousin of Dudley Dursley. He is a halfblood wizard, Gryffindor alumni and was the captain and seeker on his school’s Quidditch team. He led Dumbledore’s Army and defeated Voldemort at seventeen. As a favor to Dudley and to keep a child from abuse for being magic, Harry agreed to adopt James - then Bernard - and pretended that he was his and his new wife’s biological son. He is the current Head of Auror Office and occasionally guest lectures for Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. He is married to Ginny Weasley-Potter and is the father of two other children, Albus Severus and Lily Luna.
Ginevra “Ginny” Weasley - Adopted Mother - She is the daughter of Arthur Weasley and Molly Weasley (nee Prewett). She is a pureblood witch, Gryffindor alumni and the chaser - and at one point seeker - on her school’s Quidditch team. She fought in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside Harry, Ron (her older brother) and Hermione (friend, now sister-in-law). She agreed without hesitation to adopt James with her husband, Harry, and used her sabbatical from her career to hide her “pregnancy” and maternity leave. She is the former chaser for the Holyhead Harpies and former senior Quidditch reporter for the Daily Prophet. She currently works as the Sports Editor for the Daily Prophet . She is married to Harry Potter and is the mother of two other children, Albus Severus and Lily Luna.
Number of siblings: Two
Albus Severus Potter (adopted, younger brother)
Lily Luna Potter (adopted, younger sister)
Edward “Teddy” Lupin (god-brother / “adopted” brother)

Relationship with family (close? estranged?):
James loves his adopted family; parents, siblings and numerous cousins. There is nothing more important to him than them and he would take a bullet for each and every one of them. He has a unique relationship with each of them. Their bond has only grown strong since they found out he was adopted and accepted him for he knew that they would love him no matter what and vice versa.
Before knowing that he was his biological father, James’ relationship with Dudley wasn’t much to talk about. Harry always insisted on his three children visiting his cousin. James never understood why and was always reluctant to go until he received the letter with the truth when he was eleven. After that, he made much more of an effort and writes to him frequently.
Up until 2021, Talia Leapei and James had no contact. All he knew was her name. She wrote to him out of the blue which had a major impact on him. It took him months to respond and they’ve exchanged only a few letters. They met in 2023 and she was invited to his wedding, even organising the flowers for it.
James does get along with Fletcher despite not knowing they are related. They are not close but if James ever did find out, there is no doubt that he would want them to be.

They might watch a movie or he’ll write to his relatives before going to bed. He tends to go to sleep fairly early especially if he has practice early the next day.
On weekends, he still wakes up at six for a run and eats breakfast, occasionally he’ll make breakfast in bed for Mackenzie.
