Reasons Why I Need a Sexy JoongDunk BL
If you know me, then you’ll know that it’s actually kind of funny that I’m asking for this. Me. A sex-repulsed leaning asexual who, for the most part, tends to stay away from (overly) sexy and/or horny series. And yet I really want a sexy JoongDunk series. A messy, Only Friends-type of series even, perhaps.
Make no mistake, though. I don’t actually want it for me, oh no. No, I want a sexy JoongDunk series for them, for their sake. Because I feel like they’d have a whole lot of fun with it.
And here’s why I think so:
Reason #1: Dum Dum
Definitely the most obvious reason, but the LOL Fanfest Dum Dum performance: the fact that the choreography was like That. And the fact that it was their idea to switch up who bites who for day 2:
Not to mention the fact that Dunk actually bit Joong for real:
I'm just saying, they wanted “hot and sexy”, they chose this:
Reason #2: “We’ve never done this before”
The way they kept bringing up how Hidden Agenda is more mature than Star in My Mind and how there were scenes that they’d never done before*, it seemed to have been a big deal for them.
*see here for some eng subs (this video is unfortunately heavily edited)
Reason #3: “Favorite episode of Hidden Agenda? Episode 8!!”
The way Joong immediately said episode 8 was his favorite, smiling expectantly at Dunk...
...and then was very adamant when Dunk couldn’t decide between episodes 7 and 8:
Considering their comments of how “episode 8 is special” because they’ve “never done anything like this before”... Well, dare I bet it’s their favorite episode because of the ending specifically. Unless maybe they were particularly excited about the stalker story line. I don’t think they’d done that before either.
Reason #4: Ep8 watch party live on Instagram
The way they actually sat down and went live on Instagram in order to watch, react to, and comment on the entirety of episode 8.
And considering Dunk’s comment at the beginning of this live about how it’s “something we've never done before” I’m absolutely convinced they chose ep8 to react to specifically because of the ending lmao. Unless, of course, they were extremely hyped about the stalker plot. There were no creepy stalker plots in Star in My Mind, nor do I remember any significant stalking in Joong’s other works. Or maybe the two of them were referring to the scene where Zo bites Joke’s arm. I don’t remember any biting from Star in My Mind, so who knows, it might be that. What else was special in ep8? Oh right, Joke punched the stalker. That can’t have been the “we’ve never done this before” thing, though, considering Joong was literally in a Mafia series before. Also, he punched Pepper in Star in My Mind. My theory still stands.
Reason #5: “It was more intense than this”
In that instagram live they also dropped that a lot was cut from that scene and that it was supposed to be more intense than this. Uh, boys...? What kind of choreography did y’all on set come up with for this scene exactly??
(I can’t stop laughing at Dunk's face when he agrees with Joong saying that a lot was cut. He looks like he suddenly bit into a very sour lemon lmao)
In conclusion:
Clearly they had a lot of fun with the Dum Dum performance and it seems that they were very excited about getting to do something more mature with Hidden Agenda, and also getting the the chance to do something that they’ve “never done before” in ep8 specifically. So my point stands: I think they’d have a blast playing a sexy series together. I want it for them.
Bonus: Vampire BL
Bonus points if this sexy JoongDunk BL that I’m asking for is a vampire BL!! Here’s why:
You can find a more extensive list of vampire mentions in my JoongDunk Vampire Mentions Masterpost here.
#actually i think they'd have a blast on only friends ngl#i think they would totally have been up for it#airenyah plappert#joongdunk#adrm#sexy joongdunk vampire bl#i actually meant to upload this on sunday but then i ended up much longer than expected with my uni assignments rip#at least i've managed to get this done BEFORE gmmtv2024 tho so that's something i guess#also it doesn't actually need to be in 2024 tbh#i'll take one 2025 too#i'd also be excited to see them work apart from one another in separate projects#but. i need this at some point in the next 3ish years#@gmmtv do you hear me? ได้ยินไหมคะ#justice for joongdunk#edit: i made this post BEFORE gmmtv 2024 part 1#so waaaaay before part 2 dropped the announcement for the heart killers#and can i just say...#you know how i'm using only friends out of all shows as an example here in this post?#i mean... did i speak jd being in a jojo show into existence with this post?? did actually i manifest it???? Rise August: Secrets
Story included under cut!!!
Draxum was in his apartment sorting through a box of old potions and scrolls and loose mystical items left over from when his lab was destroyed for the third time, during the Shredder's invasion. He'd been putting this off for far too long. Amidst the chaos of his collection, there were medical files on his past experiments, DNA samples of the turtles, a couple ancient relics he'd managed to keep ahold of during the whole 'banished from the Hidden City' fiasco, and... a doll. Small, scorched, threads and yarn coming loose from where time had worn them out. It was a small item, inconsequential upon first glance. But it was possibly the most precious possession Draxum owned, if only because it was the last reminder he had of a former life. The doll, stitched and crocheted with care, resembled a miniature turtle. Draxum pressed the doll close to his chest as he'd done countless times before, holding it by his heart and silently praying to any god that would listen to him. And he sat, hoping his prayer would be answered, and a single message could be relayed to the spirit of the one who'd made the doll for him all those years ago.
He was so sorry.
It was then that his phone began to buzz, bringing him back to the present. He tried ignoring it, but the infuriating noise continued.
BZZZ. BZZZ. BZZZ.
He growled, admitting defeat in the battle of wills against the irritating little machine, and picked it up. Leonardo was calling. Had BEEN calling him repeatedly. Along with Michelangelo, who'd called a total of three times within the last minute and a half. Hmm, odd. Donatello had called once, too. What could they want? It wasn't a training evening, or one of those cumbersome 'family bonding nights'. But it must be important if they were willing to call SIX TIMES IN A ROW. He cautiously pressed the little green button.
"Baron Draxum speaking--"
"WERE YOU GOING TO TELL US THAT WE HAD SECRET SIBLINGS?! OR WERE WE JUST SUPPOSED TO LEARN THAT ON OUR OWN?!"
Draxum pulled his ear away, flinching at the noise. It was Leonardo, all right.
"What?" Draxum groaned, trying to combat the sudden deafness he just received in his left ear. "What is going on--"
"Dad just told us about our secret SISTER and secret BROTHER!" Leo yelled again. "Did you ever plan on bringing this up?! Where will the secrets END with our family?! Do you have ANYTHING TO SAY?!"
Draxum grumbled angrily.
"That conniving actor... I can't believe he..." How dare that former action star spill all his secrets without telling him he even KNEW those secrets! How did he find out?! "Put the rat on," he demanded. "I will discuss this breach of trust with him."
"I..." silence. "....I can't."
"Why not?" Draxum asked, noticing the sudden change in Leonardo's voice.
The mutant slider turtle took a good long while to answer. In the background, Draxum could make out the sounds of weeping and wailing. Michelangelo. He'd recognize the youngest's voice anywhere. Leo's breaths were shaky as he struggled to string together a sentence.
"...Draxum... Dad can't... he isn't...." a pause, a deep inhale. "He... he's dead," Leo whispered hoarsely. "He died half an hour ago."
Dead...?
Barry knew the rat was old and weak, and had been growing sick... but... And he'd told them. On his deathbed. He'd planned this, a dramatic reveal for the king of drama. One last spiteful incursion against the great Baron Draxum. He'd told the boys about their 'secret siblings'. How could he have known?? How did he ever find out? The how and why hardly mattered now. He'd told them. And... it was about time they knew.
"...I'll be there in fifteen minutes," Draxum stated before hanging up abruptly.
Baron Draxum spent the first five minutes just standing in the middle of the room. Thinking. Contemplating. This was going to be a very difficult conversation. For a multitude of reasons. Draxum spent the next five minutes gathering all the supplies he would need. Reports on the mutagen and ooze. Scans of the experiments. DNA samples, tests, any information on the two subjects he had left. Receipts of their existence. Proof.
The doll, the last remnant and possession of the most precious thing he'd ever lost.
And then Draxum spent the last five minutes rehearsing. Going over every little detail and thinking the history through. He could guess what they would say, what they'd ask, and how they'd react. There was no way he was ready for this.
His fifteen minutes were up. It was time to go.
Draxum stood stone still, arms full of documents, in the center of his apartment.
It was now twenty minutes. Draxum opened a magenta portal and stepped through.
The lair was darker than usual. And quiet. Usually there were string lights and neon signs illuminating the halls, but they'd been turned off. And there was always something playing in the background, a tune from the radio or a movie left on in the living room. But it was eerily silent, apart from the sound of people crying. Draxum followed the sounds of grief into the living room, Splinter's favourite space. It was dimly lit by candles, a scene of mourning like something from a film. Of course, that was how he'd want to go out. Dramatically.
The children were all surrounding his favourite armchair, Leonardo standing at a distance and tapping his foot impatiently as he stood guard over the room. Donatello was sitting in a corner, looking unsure of how to feel, or how to process what he was feeling. Michelangelo was sobbing in Raphael's lap, crying uncontrollably into his shoulder as the eldest rocked him back and forth, trying to comfort the youngest while also holding back his own tears in an attempt at false bravery. April O'Neil -- who was also here, among others -- had taken the initiative to drape a long white sheet over the body, out of respect.
Seeing this... seeing the outline of Splinter's body laying still... the scene became all too real all at once, and Draxum's planning and pre-prepared speeches were lost in the realization. His sons just lost the man they called 'father'. The person they loved most in life. And now, he was all they had left. And that terrified him.
"You're late," Leo growled, turning to look the sheep man in the eyes.
"Apologies," Draxum sighed. "I needed to prepare. Sit down, I'll try to explain it all."
Leo and April gathered the rest of the family into the kitchen, where Draxum began to pass out the papers and documentation.
"Okay, Draxum," Leo spat, sitting himself down at the table. "TALK. What did Dad mean by a secret sister and secret brother?"
Draxum inhaled deeply, readied himself, and began.
"You DO have a brother and sister. That is true."
"Why didn't you ever tell us?" Mikey asked, voice wet and wobbly from crying. "Why didn't Splinter??"
"I can't say why the rat --" he paused, cleared his throat. They dead deserved more respect than that. "...Why Splinter didn't tell you beforehand. I didn't even know he knew. But I hadn't told you because I saw no reason to."
"No reason?!" Donatello gawked. "They're our secret family members!"
"Yeah, do you have ANY IDEA how many family members we have?!" Leo added. "Zero! And now we have two?! This is kind of a BIG DEAL, BARRY!"
"Technically, we always had two secret family members but --"
"Not the time for grammatical correction, Dee."
"Would you allow me to continue?" Draxum yelled over the argumentative boys.
The room fell silent.
"Thank you. The main reason I never told you was... because they are... dead."
Leo's hands, which had been folded together and holding his chin up, fell to his sides as his eyes widened.
"Dead? How?"
"It's a long story," Draxum began, taking one of the many sheets and passing it around the table. "When you were first mutated, I also mutated a fifth turtle, though she was contained in a separate tank. During the destruction of my lab, I managed to escape with her while your father escaped with you. Three years later, with my lab restored, I began my research again and decided to try mutating a sixth turtle."
"Our... brother?" Raph asked, pretending to read a sheet full of medical notes and toxicology readings he didn't understand at all.
"Yes," Draxum nodded. "Though, technically, he is your half-brother."
"How does that work?" Mikey asked.
"I didn't have any DNA remnants of Lou Jitsu left, so I had to find the next best warrior to use," Draxum explained, gesturing to himself. "So I used my own DNA for the recreated formula. I called the two turtles Venus De Milo and Machiavelli."
"But what happened to them?" Mikey asked nervously. "How did they..."
Draxum cleared his throat as he went over the old memories. Even after all these years, they still hurt.
"I was not in the good graces of the public. The Council of Heads disapproved of my illegal genetic experimentations, and as such my work was in danger. The two experiments were in danger. That was when Big Mama showed up."
"Of course she did!" Leo groaned, throwing his hands in the air. "That woman! Pizza supreme, I swear she preys on opportunity like... like a... like a creature that prowls or... something..."
"Do you mind if I go on?" Draxum growled. "As I was saying, she promised to help smooth things over with the council and the public eye if I let her take custody for one of the experiments."
"Why would she want that?" Donnie wondered as he looked over Venus' paperwork. "And why would you agree?
"She said that if she were to truly be in league with me, she'd need an equal share of the project. She argued that it would only solidify her standing with me and make us equal partners with equal footing. And an equal portion of responsibility and investment in the project. And I had no choice, I needed her sway with the community. She took Venus from me, and I never saw her again. Big Mama was only meant to keep her for three years, but when the time came she told me that Venus had died from complications due to the mutation."
"Was that true?" Raph asked.
"I don't know, I never found out. If it was false, Big Mama made her virtually invisible. I've no idea of what became of Venus. But after that, I became far more protective of Machiavelli. I trained him, schooled him, kept him safe from prying eyes. And as time went on, he became very important to me. I was invested in his wellbeing, and... and..."
Michelangelo perked up, seeing a familiar but rare side of Draxum show itself. A softened expression, a gentleness in his voice. A deep and harrowed regret.
"You... you loved him, didn't you?" the box shell turtle asked. "He became like a son to you, didn't he?"
Draxum nodded sadly.
"But I was a warmongering fool back then. Afraid and angry, I projected my frustrations out onto Machiavelli. I tried to mold him into a warrior, but he... he wasn't like that, he was kind and... you all would have liked him." Draxum smiled, turning to look at each of the boys. "He was creative, smart, loved playing games and making jokes... And despite my ignorance, he saw me as a father."
Leo glanced from a sheet containing science-y mumbo-jumbo back to the disgraced baron. He looked so old, so tired. In his hands, he clutched a secret and sacred doll. Leo's gaze rose from the hidden treasure back up to Draxum's face, which was clouded over with old grief.
"What happened to him, Barry?" Leo asked cautiously. "What happened to Machiavelli?"
Draxum squeezed the handmade doll. His brow furrowed, his jaw hardened. His voice was low as he forced the words out.
"...It was a few years ago. One night, we had an argument over training. I don't remember exactly what was said, only that we fought over his purpose. I was adamant that his destiny was to be a soldier, nothing more, and I said as much. I told him we'd discuss it further in the morning. But that night... the lab... there was an explosion, and... his bedroom was right beneath... he didn't make it out."
The room was silent. Draxum sat, twiddling his thumbs as he thought of his son's face. There were no pictures, no images, no drawings left to depict him. Only this doll, made in his image as a gift for his father. But he didn't need any reminders. He remembered him perfectly. He remembered it all.
"...How long ago was this?" Donatello asked.
"...Almost three years ago, by now," Draxum whispered.
"An explosion in your lab that occured over two years ago," Donnie repeated. "This... this wouldn't have happened to be during a stand-off between you and four mutant turtles, would it?"
Draxum stayed silent. He knew this was coming. Hence why he never brought it up. He felt every eye on him. He couldn't answer. Yet they needed one. He slowly nodded.
"...So it was... our fault?" Raph asked, voice low and hushed. "The lab explosion we caused... it was because of us he died?"
"No," Draxum assured them, finally looking up. "It was my fault. If I had not been so stubborn and had let go of my irrational hatred of the humans, none of that would have happened. I would never had created the oozesquitos, nor kidnapped the agent Mayhem, and none of the events that followed would have come about. It was not your fault. It was only mine."
Mikey stood up and rushed over to Draxum's side, wrapping his arms around him and crying into his robe.
"I'm sorry," Mikey whimpered. "I'm sorry that happened..."
"And I am sorry I did not tell you about your sister and half-brother sooner," Draxum sighed. "I wasn't sure how to bring it up. And... I was not ready to reopen old wounds."
"I guess it's okay," Leo grumbled, waving his hand at Draxum. "I'm glad you told us now, at least."
"It would have been cool to have more siblings, though," Raph smiled. "I wonder if I'd still be oldest..."
"According to these, 'Venus' was older than you," Donatello read aloud. "And Machiavelli was born three years after our mutation--"
"Wait, this means I have a younger brother?! I'm not the youngest??" Mikey exclaimed.
"You're still the youngest, Mikey," Donnie explained.
"Nuts."
"This might be a dumb question, but are you sure that they're dead?" Leo asked, scanning the sheets over again. "I mean, plot twists seem to be a running theme in our family. Could they still be alive?"
"It's possible that Venus might be alive," Draxum shrugged. "Big Mama is nothing if not a swindler and a liar."
"What about Machiavelli?" Mikey wondered. "Could he have made it out?"
"I don't see how," Draxum answered dejectedly. "I barely made it out alive. With no warning, and his room directly underneath... no. If he had survived, I would have found him by now. And... it's too late. Three years have weathered away any hope I had."
"You never know," Mikey offered. "I mean... it's possible, right?"
Baron Draxum knew this was a vain hope, one he didn't have the strength to allow any indulgence in.
"I do not wish to give myself false hope for what I know to be a fantasy," Draxum scolded. "But..."
But... he could hope, nonetheless. And perhaps one day, he really would see his son once more.
@sariphantom
(While I don't actually accept the whole Splinter's death from the anniversary comic as canon, I only accept it in this AU universe because it allows for Draxum to finally tell his kids about his other kids)

hello gortash nation. it is i, host of this week @sankttealeaf here! gortash week may "officially" be over but that means nothing when the archduke wants more! (he will not stop until he has more, please i miss my family he's keeping me locked away in wyrms rock prison and is making me dance for his amusement! i cant dance! help please!!)
anyway - despite the event ending, i will be leaving the AO3 collection open until the end of august / early september for those who found the event a little later and want to make something for these prompts. time is a weird soup after all, we don't follow rules here!!
if you've made something and have thought "oh no! its not the day of the prompt anymore - i cant post it" PLEASE share it!! i'm still accepting submissions and i'll still reshare any gortash week work here & tag whichever day its for! i know some people found out about the event as it was happening and if the prompts have inspired you - please share!!! i'd love to see it!!
thank you from the bottom of my heart if you've participated in this event - whether that's making things or simply engaging with the content shared. it means the world to me that people found the prompts interesting enough to take time out of their day to make something for it. i had no idea this event would be as big as it's become and i'm so so so impressed with the wide variety of work made and shared!! everyone is so talented and i cant wait to see what other things you all make and write <3
as for the future? well, i'd love to run more events like this! i've mentioned before about a hypothetical "gort month" that would include two prompts per week, 8(ish) prompts in total. that way there's a loooot more time to work on things & if people wish to join halfway through it's a lot less pressure to do so! my aim for running events is to keep them as stress & pressure free as possible because theyre here to be fun! i'm also open to comments & ideas & feedback on how you (yes, you!) found this event so if i do end up running something else in the future it can be better and better! pls feel free to shoot me as ask (anon or not it's fine! be respectful though, that's all i ask<3) if you have any post-event comments you want to air and i'll respond!!
again, if i've missed any of your work you've posted, please send it my way! no message required, just drop me the link & i'll share it asap!! thank you to those who have done that already!! i easily miss things and i dont want anyone to feel like im purposefully leaving them out!!
thank you again for making this week so enjoyable! ive had such a blast hosting it and if i see any other events i'll be sure to reblog them here (for those interested: i've seen a wyllmancer week, a galemancer week (both on twitter), and a lae'zel week on here that i can't seem to find the post for to link to :( )

[The future of this BLOG]: SHOWS I'm planning on analyzing here & on YouTube
Interview with the vampire
Invincible
House of the dragon
The boys
Umbrella acadamy
Bridgerton probably (still haven't had time to watch part 2 yet)
stranger things: I have mixed feelings about reviewing it given what certain staff has said and done. I oscilate between wanting to review the final season or wanting to boycott it (especially as someone who has been part of the BDS movement for 1/2 her life). But, on one hand, It's not the fault of the underpaid (and talented) writers and staff who don't have these views. And I do believe some of the writing staff may have good intentions and want to give us a positive and powerful message to the audience about healing from childhood tr*uma. However, other members of the writing staff may just want to go down the stereotypical and popular-easy route. We'll just have to wait and see what happens in the last season. If I hear the ending isn't simply another re-hashing of prior seasons and it's more like s1-2 (without the cliches of s3-4). I'd be more inclined to review it by *cough* and watching it elsewhere. Once I was logged back on to tumblr: I did have a whole draft saved about my politics since I was a kid and why I still feel so strongly about such conflicts, today . But, I shouldn't make the topic about me- and I'm not sure anyone wants to hear my life story XD. So, the big point (to my followers) is regardless of whether I chose to watch it or boycot it-
I'm not deleting the old ST content: so do what you want with it (like, reblog, add details to reblogs I didn't notice). Have fun :D !
Analyzing ST certainly helped me improve in terms of media literacy (and it'll be beneficial for the future content I make). So even if it sometimes got messy here, I do appreciate all the positives the ST blog and followers brought to me.The kind words meant a lot. For those who want to unfollow me for my political beliefs , that's totally fine. That's your prerogative. For those who want to unfollow cause again ST was pretty much my whole blog: again I TOTALLY understand and I wish you the best :). I'm not going to judge, take away, or guilt anyone, for their choice of media they like. Enjoy it (I truly mean that).
For those who continue to follow my blog . I appreciate you SO MUCH! I've been gone from this blog for such a long time cause of school (and I appreciate those who stayed and were excited to see me again). The positive words meant a lot over the years. Everyone have a lovely day. Take care of yourselves.
Sincerely, Kay
ps: I'm open to other media suggestions too so you can drop them in my message box (recent films/ shows, mini/limited series, animation, heck i'm open to comedies and foreign media too). But, analyzing them will most likely be after the shows listed above .Right now I'm focusing on my national exam and my mental health. My first video will probably be in late August or early September. My test is August 20th. Hope everyone is doing well .I'm feeling much better mentally. Hope everyone is feeling the same way :)
for my 1st video I’ll just post it to youtube . But for other videos I may make a early access patreon (like a week before the next video comes out free on youtube). Have to google how all that works (or if there's better alternatives) . Totally fine if you can't afford it (you'll get to see it for free on youtube regardless :D) . I'll be honest . I'm primarily thinking of doing it cause I need to pay off those student loans and I'm trying to hopefully move out of state in a few years. Plus, I love analyzing media anyways (so making it a part time job would be a dream come true .

Here's me recording/performing of empathy shield live on Behind The Mirror, RTR 92.1 FM on the 24th of August 2023. photos by alt.live.perth (Jess).
Set was a little shorter due to the radio time constraints. Also gave a brief interview (the interview on the site was done beforehand over email, theres also a pre-mastered version of empathy on there, I only spoke briefly after the set on radio). Again, empathy shield was completely improvised based on carefully pre-selected sound design elements. Done in the middle of autistic burnout, where I could barely speak on radio due to slowly going into verbal shutdown . Luckily my tour hosts Jess and Amir were absolutely supportive and got me through it.
I went on to play this show a few days in later, also in borloo/perth at the Badlands Bar. It used a lot of the same elements of empathy shield. I have a few feelings about it.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f2843d0876066c6340751fff8378d5ea/89e59c236d4f9c24-a6/s400x600/d4b641e708ba0bd7f2ed29513d5b6e80ceb437ae.jpg)
After the end of my set, I had a total verbal shutdown as soon as I got off stage and snuck back into the green room.
Worse, I managed to break the zip on my dress (got caught in the mesh I was wearing) and was stuck in it for 20 minutes before I had to ask a band for a shirt to cover the broken top half. Then several old perth friends I had not talked to in ages came in to talk to me only to find me simply unable to say hi back. I felt terrible about it. Indeed, I was in a terrible state. However - everybody around me there understood. A fellow autistic woman even gave me a fidget spinner. Even if I didn't use it (weirdly too overwhelmed to stim?), I kinda happy cry every time I think about that somebody even offered one to me non-judgementally. Only a few years ago would I have seen as a ridiculous r*tard baby for being a 'professional musician' who does this, but now it's ...its treated kinda like normal. Wish I had this kind of understanding growing up before I was diagnosed. Now, I am never the only ND at the gigs I play. Indeed, the NT's are usually the minority at them. Then theres the fact that so many other (and more well-known) musicians are being open about their autism (like Ethel Cain or Justin Broadrick) which would also be unthinkable years beforehand. It genuinely warms my heart. This is why I am loud, proud and cringe about my neurodivergence now. I don't want to be repeatedly traumatised by it anymore based on misunderstandings that we autists inevitably get, or failing to meet allistic standards. Every time I see a fellow autist get horridly traumatised because somebody (usually NT) got the ick it fucking hurts. Or when they blame themselves for failing to meet arbitrary allistic standards and fall into a horrible depression for not being 'normal'. It hurts even more if its a fellow autistic transfeminine person. I wish I could do more about it, like psychology or social work - but music is what I am stuck doing for the time being, so I'll try to do what I can here. Hence several upcoming songs /records (including the two Roadburn commissioned original compositions) neurodivergence takes a central role. It's lame, but sometimes its good to be lame. Sometimes it's necessary. We have a long way to go, but its also important to remember we have also come a long way too.

2024 Writing Roundup!
So in retrospect this is a WILD thing to post on NYE, but thank you to @miladydewintcr for tagging me by proxy! I can't take full credit for a lot of these words, as I cowrite all my Dragon Age fic with @adainesjacket, so this is kind of a collective wordcount for both of us...
words posted: 75,300
additional words written: 228,259 (Mostly on The Kick Inside, which is now 135,000 words long and STILL NOT DONE DX)
grand total of words: 303,559
fandoms: Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Dimension 20 (A Court of Fae and Flowers), Grishaverse (so actually my most varied year in terms of fandom so far!)
highest kudos: what stays and what fades away, with an unbelievable 363 kudos??? I still can't believe that my little Grishaverse fic I intended to be 3 chapters long ended up being my most-read fic ever. I technically started this last year, but due to Life Happening, I didn't get round to finishing it until April this year.
Anyway, I'm really proud of this particular canon rewrite of the Shadow and Bone trilogy focussing on childhood friends Genya and Nikolai, and I'm crossing my fingers that this year, I'll get the Wedding Sequel finished and posted to celebrate it as it deserves...
highest hit oneshot: I have not really gone in for oneshots this year, so the season of possible miracles wins this category by default with 206 hits - my Dimension 20 Exchange gift for @justiceforprincecorrick. It ended up running a little later than I wanted it to, but I reread it as preparation for this year's exchange, and I think it holds up as a cute, winter-themed Cinderella AU for Binx and Andhera from Dimension 20's A Court of Fae and Flowers.
new things I tried: Dragon Age fic, writing outlines, and writing fight (and smut) scenes that should be posted in the new year!
fic I spent the most time on: The Kick Inside, or my Dragon Age Origins Rapunzel AU, as it was originally titled in my heart, has been a labour of love since August, and I've finally started posting it weekly. Please give it a read if you enjoy Dragon Age at all - it's an alternate universe where a pregnant Warden recruit provides Morrigan with an alternative to the Dark Ritual, and the ripples this causes in the world.
fic I spent the least time on: merry solstice (please don't call), cowritten with my beautiful wife @adainesjacket, at least proportionally - the Dragon Age 2 Justice/Anders/Hawke Christmas RomCom AU that nobody asked for but people have been very kind about! We wrote this in a single month and it came out so perfect that I just want to write it all over again.
favorite thing I wrote: The Kick Inside is still my beautiful, terrible baby and I am actively afraid of not finishing it because it's been eating my brain for five months.
favorite thing(s) I read:
Top of the list has got to be the His Delicious Materials series by @elodieunderglass, the best Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon fics and possibly the best fics I've ever read. I squeak audibly whenever they update, and read them aloud whenever given the opportunity. The narrative voices range from Tamsyn Muir (Nona the Ninth) to Terry Pratchett, and they are truly a joy to read if you enjoy fantasy worldbuilding, Daemon AUs, or simply to feel Joy and Hope in this Cruel, Dark World.
I've also really enjoyed Something Lonesome and Wild, by passing_lives, a BG3 fic my wife recommended when I started writing The Kick Inside that's provided a key inspiration in terms of the hazards of Adventuring While Pregnant. This is an Astarion/Gale fic and it managed to charm me despite not particularly vibing with either of the boys when I started playing, so now, in my heart, this fic is happening in the background of my playthrough while my disaster of a Dark Urge commits atrocities. Beautifully written and incredibly compelling, give it a look!
Finally, in terms of Dragon Age fic, I haven't played Veilguard so I have to be careful about what I read, but I've been slowly making my way through:
Will-O'-The-Wisp, by lovenug, an Emmrich/Rook fic from Mannfred's perspective (perfect, as I love a non-human narrator)
where the heart is by ghostbunny and PhantomsLost, a truly delightful Hawke/Anders Stardew Valley AU, which I did not realise I needed until I started reading it this Christmas
writing goals for 2025: Finishing The Kick Inside! Also, ideally, finishing that Ketterdam Wedding Sequel and Daughter Phoenix Rise (a Dragon Age 2/Inquisition take I don't think anyone has done before...)
new works: Just the four listed here, plus a few snippets that are going up in the new year... :3
Template under cut!

Royals/Ramblers is DONE. I split the difference and made two epilogues from the five, and one of them just looks like it's part of another chapter. I am devious in my ways.
I'm letting it marinate for the rest of the day; I'll give it a quick pass tomorrow, then let go of it for a few days so when I come back I'll be ready for slightly deeper editing. Aiming to post it perhaps October or November, we'll see how life goes.
It meant I could finalize a lot of dates in the timeline that I've been building. I've had to shift some things around, so now the trick is to figure out timing for the stories now in the pipeline, based on my notes. There's ten, more or less, and whether I end up writing them all is dubious; it reminds me of plotting out Laocoon's Children, an extremely ambitious task, but unlike Laocoon's Children, I control the canon and I don't have to deal with anyone's stupidity but my own. And I'm really only focused on five of the ten right now. Which, given I wrote four of these books in fifteen months, plus three books' worth (Royals/Ramblers) for a total of "seven" books in less than two years....I guess we'll find out. Might take a break at some point to write something more literary, that's up to the ADHD I think.
Anyway, it's not necessarily the order in which I'd like to write the stories, but I've been holding off on some of these for a year already, they'll keep. I think the slate coming up is:
2023 Autumn - The Football Novel, which is already 2/3 written; it will run through spring 2024.
2024 Spring - The Chicken Salad Wars, Simon's novel, pushed out from this year to next; it has to end in August, because of Plot.
2024 Autumn - The Roman Ruin story, aka Classics Nerds In Love; this has to come relatively soon because it's prior to Jerry finalizing the dissolution of his estate. There's no set ending for this one, but it will likely need to cover at least until late spring 2025.
2025 Spring - The Let's Legalize Psychedelic Davzda story. Not ideal to push this one so far, but it's possible when I get there I could swap it with the Roman Ruin story, though that could make certain plotlines awkward.
2025 Summer - Ofelia's story, which culminates in Galian elections in early fall.
Fortunately most of them should be less work and words than Royals/Ramblers, which is a bit of a sweeping familial epic. Those five are all more-or-less unrelated to the royals directly.
The rest of them are either barely conceptions or can be set at any time (like the Quaker Whaler novel that happens in the past anyway). Which is kind of nice; I now have both a specific agenda for the immediate future and resources that I can build out once I get closer to the end of that agenda.
Phew. What a ride, and I'm still in the middle of it.
(I'd post a bit of story from Royals/Ramblers but for the last 4-5 chapters it's all spoilery.)

hello! i vaguely recall you doing a new year's resolution bingo thing - first, was that actually you lol? and if so, how'd it go, any adjustments you'd make from the original idea? (i did a resolution bingo this past year, which mostly ended up being a 24 item quest buffet, which did work for me! but i'm curious for more data). happy new year to you and your various sizes of bastard!
Hello! Yes, that was me. It didn't go great!
I did a resolution bingo in 2022 but it ended up feeling like homework and at a certain point in the year I looked at the spaces that I hadn't filled and it just made me feel bad.
In 2023 I did kind of a chore chart; I used a sheet of college-ruled notebook paper and divided it up into columns with things like "guitar" and "draw" and and "quilt square" and "go for a walk by myself" and numbered out 52 lines and I went through and highlighted each thing as I did it each week. That went very well for some things and not very well for others. I had at least a few columns where I did something every other week, and I totally finished the quilt square column, and I drew something for like 40 weeks, but I also had several categories that I did absolutely nothing for and several categories that had very few highlights.
That chart *also* was kind of a problem and there was a week in, like, august where my brain was being weird and was like "you can't do more of X until you've caught up on Y and Z" because I had to flip the paper over and wanted to finish three columns before I flipped it - that was clearly a very silly hangup but I don't make the rules for what my brain will freak out about and it caused a disproportionate amount of stress.
This year I kind of combined the two and I've made three sheets of paper with different tasks on different lines, and in different amounts. (And none of the papers need to be flipped over so I won't get a weird hangup week)
So instead of having 52 blanks each for "pushups" "squats" and "go for a walk by myself" I've got 156 blanks for "workout: lifting, calisthenics, stretching, walking, cardio." I didn't do a single walk by myself last year, and it turns out I'm pretty unlikely do do random squats or pushups, so rather than try to do one exercise fifty two times I'm just going to try to do *some* kind of exercise three times a week and I'm not going to feel bad about it if that's more bench press instead of more cardio.
I did pretty well with quilt squares so i've set a goal to do twice as many this year. I set a goal for 52 drawings and writing seriously 52 times. My yard is a disaster so my goal is to fill my yardwaste bin 52 times this year.
But what I *haven't* done is divide that up by week. Maybe some weeks I'll get four workouts in and other weeks I'll do two. Maybe I won't draw for a month but I'll get into it a lot over the summer.
One of my two other sheets is things that I'd like to do daily. My four daily tasks that I'm aiming for are: clean something at the house, floss, moisturize, and journal. (Journaling was successful in the bingo year but not at all last year)
The other sheet is the one that's more like the bingo, or what I think the spirit of the bingo is supposed to be. I've got it labeled "Bonus" and each thing on it has about twenty circles that I can check off if I do something but that I don't see as a goal. That includes stuff like "friend hangs" and "go someplace" - stuff that I want to do more of but that I can either plan or do spontaneously and that doesn't have a big project end goal (so it's "do something with music like program a music box or play guitar for a while" rather than "write a song" like it was the bingo year, when no song got written).
I may have also just kneecapped myself by making the bingo squares too hard. Maybe I should do a monthly bingo with smaller goals.
The bingo also got harder when I failed at bullet journaling; turns out that's not a great way for me to manage my time and attention and the bingo was in the bullet journal. Having stuff on a wall next to the light switch in my office helped a lot last year, I think, so that's where my sheets are this year too.
IDK, this is all fun to experiment with and I enjoy it but also I'm never sure if any of it "works" in terms of getting me to do more of the things that I'd like myself to do. It did work for quilt squares last year, though, and that's the best progress I've made on my quilt since I started it in 2021. And the daily chart is helping a lot so far.
But maybe I just like making charts (I do).

Progress Update: September 2024
Hello everyone! Yui Wrong here, to give you an update regarding the progress that's been made towards bringing Feel Less back from hiatus 💖
So! Soon it'll be 2 months since Feel Less went on hiatus. And on the one hand that kinda pisses me off bc I really really like publishing this webcomic and not doing it feels like I'm missing something important from my life 😭 on the other hand, I'm satisfied with the progress that's been made! Development of updates #37 and #38 has been steady, so I don't feel like I've wasted time. However, although I've been consistently making progress towards Feel Less's return, I feel like there's been some radio silence here in the blog, so I wanted to give you all an update about how things have been going ^^
For starters, lemme start with what I've been doing. Before doing any illustrations for the new updates, I decided to take a small break to practice my art style, as I was really unsatisfied with how my drawings were coming out. I focused on head shapes, as those felt inconsistent in my art. Here's a couple doodles I did in August for practice
I want to keep practicing, but I decided figuring out a consistent head shape was enough for now and got to work on the updates. And I'm glad I did! I do believe there's been some noticeable improvement in some pieces~ Like for example, take this old MG illustration compared to a WIP for update #38
I like both, but I'm especially happy with the 2nd one~
After practicing for a couple of weeks I went straight into planning out the next updates and got to work on the artwork. And the result was that... 29 illustrations in total would be needed for updates #37 and #38!!
That's. Too many. So while drawing I've also been cutting the plan down and deleting some superfluous panels. After trimming the excess, I ended up with a much more realistic... 27 panels!! There, now that's doable 🥰
I jest of course, but my point is that a lot of work needs to be done and I've been consistently going at it for the past 2 months. As of now, 9 of the illustrations have been fully completed. I also have 2 WIPS I'm currently working on, so that number will go up soon.
Does this mean it'll take 4 more months to get this done? Of course not! ...hopefully. Listen, I make no promises, but I'll try not to take too long. I value your time and am really grateful for your patience. Besides, I don't want people getting bored because I took too long to return from a cliffhanger. I'm not Andrew Hussie. My full time job and real life chores usually mean that I only have about an hour a day to work on art, but I have a couple plans to make production faster, such as cutting down some more planned panels and buying a keyboard that doesn't make noise. Why would a keyboard's noise be relevant? Well, it's not. I mean, I guess if I had that, I'd be able to draw while taking calls from work without my bosses noticing, as it wouldnt be picked my the microphone, and that'd give me an extra 10 hours a day to draw. But I won't do that, because that'd be irresponsible and unprofessional. So therefore, the keyboard is irrelevant. Forget I mentioned it.
Also, a point I imagine some people might be wondering: Why make it so long anyway? There's no one forcing me to have complicated scenes or almost 30 illustrations. It's my webcomic, I can do whatever I want. And taking a long break where I'm not even on break might sound like a dumb idea. However, for me, Feel Less is not just a webcomic I publish on my free time. I'd like it to be a showcase of the very best I can do at the point in time when an update is posted. From that perspective, it'd be dumb not to put effort into it. To compromise the quality of my works for the sake of following a schedule has never been something I've been a fan of. Now, I do want to be realistic, but also I don't want to feel like I'm giving up and just putting out whatever I can finish by my imaginary deadline. It's a delicate balance, but for these two updates in specific, I think quality should take precedence for a bit. My goal is for you guys to read them and go "oh, no wonder it took a while". At least for those 2, then we can go back to schedule.
Overall, my point is: progress is being made! It's currently all being done behind closed doors, so it might not be noticeable for you guys. But I promise, I haven't been twiddling my thumbs for these past 2 months! Maybe I should've, because my hands are quite cramped tbh. But no matter, art must be made! In the meantime, I'll leave you with a couple panels I've finished so you guys can see some of the work that's been done~
I'll continue updating you guys as time goes on~ If you want consistent updates, I've been dropping the number of finished panels on the discord server every time I'm done with one! Also, if you'd like to help me get to the point where I can work only 5 hours a day and put more time into the comic, you can support me on Patreon and get some goodies and custom drawings while you're there ^^
Thank you all once again for your patience, I'll keep working hard for you all 💖

what are some songs you associate with either of them?
heyy sorry it took me so long to get to this (and everything else in my box)- it’s finals szn at my law school and my brain is gonna be at like- total capacity till next thursday at 5pm central time. buttttt. i am big music as a story mood setter person so lotsss of thoughts. gonna focus on young vets au here, but i can make another similar post for show canon if ppl like this? im biggg into oldies music so that would actually be fun to me!
disclaimer: re: the young vets au the “veterans” part of the story takes place starting in august 2021 after the us pulled out of afghanistan. If you see a song and think “but wait that didn't come out until this year so they couldn't listen to that in 2022/2023” simply work with me here and don’t think that <3 LOL.
bucky
biggg zach bryan person and i think in general really likes that specific niche of “new age” country music. gets *irritated* by the hardcore conservative military country music lmfao, those vets that go hard in the sand for songs like courtesy of the red white and blue? not his people. that song gives him hives. also a big fleetwood mac guy, just scratches an itch on his brain. likes florence + the machine too.

the first time that i saw your face / time stood still / i found my place / now i'm watching it tear out of my arm
gale
listens to zach bryan for bucky but his country music niche is more on the tyler childers side of things. likes older music too bc it’s what his mom would play around the house and he finds it comforting. i think he likes pop music more than bucky does lol, bucky ribs him a lil about some of it but he finds it endearing. the taste they share the most i think is the fleetwood mac and the killers/brandon flowers stuff.
follow you to virgie - tyler childers
back when all us boys were tryin' / to make sense of all these string / i can see her in the corner / singing along to all our crazy dreams

Fant4stic: A Fantastic Failure (Part 1)
As I’m sure many of you are aware, this past Valentines Day, Marvel Studios released a poster promoting their upcoming Fantastic Four film, releasing about a year from now in July of 2025.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2dcb136b91c95c0c69caf7a055968cfa/b53a931fba39cb9e-72/s540x810/79e60d90cf3415e494c04ac26e1e0ec3facd6dc1.jpg)
This has gotten people cautiously interested.....
Keyword: cautiously.
It's no surprise that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a major decline since Avengers: Endgame.
Largely due to ridiculous quantity of projects they've been pumping out a year.
Plus that fact that a lot of these projects quality-wise have been either mid or just straight up dog-shit.
This has led to the ongoing trend known as Marvel Fatigue.
Not helping any of this is some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that was revealed over the last few years.
From having their projects being helm by people who have little to no knowledge or care for the characters and the source material they're working it.
And we all know how well that turns out....
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a06882d6502dac556d5dfaeec33fe9a1/b53a931fba39cb9e-47/s540x810/ba0f9791fa46806349b120f9c22aa5b3886542cc.jpg)
To more infamously, overworking and underpaying their VFX artists.
And given some of the shit they've had to animate, they NEED to start getting better pay....
youtube
Yes.....what you just saw was a real scene from a Marvel movie.
And just to add salt to the wound, in addition to the declining interest, is that these recent Marvel films have not been performing well financially.
Hell, The Marvels (their latest film) ended up being a box office bomb, only grossing $206 million worldwide against production budget of $274.8 million. Not only that, but it now holds the record for being the lowest grossing film in the franchise's history.
So yeah.....
Although the casting is pretty decent, the inclusion of H.E.R.B.I.E. was quite the surprise, and the 60s aesthetic/vibes are pretty cool, people still have their reservations for this film given the MCU's track record lately.
However, one thing everyone does seem to agree on is that this film can't be any worse than their last cinematic outing.....
The Fantastic Four have had, funnily enough, have had four feature-length adaptations.
The very first film adaptation of Marvel's First Family was the legendary 1994 film from Roger Corman.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a41b9c5e0cb3e1e780773aa8ae879543/b53a931fba39cb9e-5a/s540x810/4e8b8520e9ebd938b1077342d6a26e79698ae28e.jpg)
Although it was completed and ready to release, it famously never got released (which I'll touch a little more on later).
However, copies of the film have been circulating since May 31st, 1994.
Over a decade later, the Fantastic Four would get their technically second but first true feature-length film in the form of the 2005 film, directed by Tim Story, and released by 20th Century Fox on July 8th, 2005.
This film would also get a sequel just two years later with Rise of the Silver Surfer, directed again by Story and released by Fox on June 15th, 2007.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1bd434fe93b7fcef357c7cd30e35632e/b53a931fba39cb9e-8b/s540x810/784c97b75f03d1c8019ca067a04bdb0dc7061d4b.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8061ffb4eb275420a63702e97d208db8/b53a931fba39cb9e-46/s540x810/a5567b9feeb9f192e6f9941dd62597ddfb3e234c.jpg)
And finally, after almost a decade away from the big screen, the FF would return with their fourth and until the MCU film releases, latest film, the 2015 film, or more commonly known as Fant4stic, as that's how it was abbreviated...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/79c135f4a8ee2519500e707344ecd64e/b53a931fba39cb9e-ff/s540x810/1d888d10eda8c901eb4ff7cc8ef1bb6b7894b0af.jpg)
A Fantastic Nightmare:
In August 2009, Fox would announce that they would be rebooting the Fantastic Four film franchise.
The reason why is because although Rise of the Silver Surfer did fairly well, grossing $301 million worldwide against a $120-130 million budget, the total gross was notably lesser than the first movie, which grossed $333.5 million worldwide.
And although there were plans for a third movie and a spin-off film focusing on The Silver Surfer, Fox feared those films could possibly be money sinks and opted to reboot the film franchise as a whole.
For the next three years, not a whole lot of progress was done with the planned reboot, apart from the hiring of producers and writers and the consideration of actors.
But the production of the film really started rolling in July 2012 when Fox hired Josh Trank, who was fresh off his directorial debut, Chronicle, to direct film.
And accompanying him was Jeremy Slater, who was hired to the screenwriter for the film, alongside X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller.
And this where everything went to shit....
If any of you even know about Fant4stic, you'd probably know that it has one of the most turbulent production histories in the last decade of filmmaking.
Before we start actually looking into the production itself, first we need to look at the reason why it was even made in the first place.
And this point brings me back to the 1994 film.
Both that and this film were created for the exact same reason: copyright hoarding.
In 1983, the other producer of the 1994 film, Bernd Eichinger met with Fantastic Four co-creator and the Marvel legend himself, Stan Lee, in Los Angeles to explore obtaining an option for a movie based on Marvel's First Family. The option was not available until three years later, when Eichinger's production company Constantin Film obtained it for a price the producer called "not enormous" and which has been estimated to be $250,000.
Eichinger's initial plan was to have the movie be a full-on blockbuster directed by Chris Columbus, complete with a cast full of big name celebrities.
But despite some interest from Warner Bros. Pictures and Columbia Pictures, budget concerns precluded any production, and with the option scheduled to expire on December 31, 1992, Constantin asked Marvel for an extension. With none forthcoming, Eichinger planned to retain his option by producing a low-budget Fantastic Four film. In September 1992, he teamed with B-movie specialist Roger Corman, who agreed to produce the film on a $1 million budget, to be released by his distribution company New Horizons Pictures.
But we all know how that ended....
Essentially, the entire of that movie ended up in a one big legal loop-hole that only benefitted Eichinger, leaving dozen of people's lives played with and their hopes and dreams crushed.
And in the case of Fant4stic, it's essentially a tragic case of history repeating itself.
Fox only produced Fant4stic not because they were genuinely interested in doing another film based on The First Family, they only did it to use it as an excuse to latch onto the film rights.
As when the 2010s rolled out, Fox's time with the Fantastic Four were about to come to an end as eventually, their film rights would've been reverted back to Marvel, and to that extension, The Walt Disney Company.
But if they had made another Fantastic Four project pretty soon, they would be able to extend their time with the film rights.
And from what I've heard, it seems like Fox wanted to get this film rolling as quick possible with the approaching deadline to the rights.
That's probably the reason why they hired Trank out of all people that could've directed this film.
Which for a film like this, you would think that Fox would go with a director that's a bit more experienced since remember: upon his hiring as director for the project, Trank was fresh off his very first directorial film.
Though you're probably wondering what I meant when I said everything went to shit upon Trank's hiring, well....
There have been plenty of cases where the productions of films have been absolute chores for one of two reasons.
The director or producers just being infamously difficult to work with, like David O'Russel or Michael Bay.
The studio constantly meddling in the production, like....basically every film studio to ever exist.
But Fant4stic is one of the rare cases where both the studio and the director made the production a living hell.
Starting off with Fox (as funnily enough, they did the least amount of damage to the production), they were guilty of....
Forcing constant rewrites
Giving Trank a much-lower budget than initially promised
Hiring a prominent special effect expert for the film, then firing him and not telling Trank about it
When production finally wrapped on the film, they were so unhappy with the finished product, that they ordered massive reshoots, including the film climax
Upon finishing the reshoots, they locked Trank out of the editing room and finishing the theatrical cut of film without him
As for Trank.....Hoo boy! Where do I even begin?
He was guilty for......
Constantly butting heads with the studio executives
Treating the cast and crew like absolute shit
Not showing up to the set on time
Usually showing up completely hammered
Frequently hiding himself from everyone on set
Constantly getting into fights (verbal and even physical) with the cast and crew
Letting his dogs loose and causing $100,000 worth of damage on the set
Constantly fighting with the screenwriters about what the tone of the film should be like
And writing a now infamous tweet on Twitter just the day before the film's release, only to be instantly deleted the next day
youtube
And remember, this was the second film that Trank directed....
I've heard of Hollywood getting to people, but it usually takes a couple of years. But in the case of Trank, it practically happened overnight.
And funnily enough, a lot of this behind-the-scenes drama was revealed to the public even before the movie had an official trailer.
So expectations for this film were not particularly very high....
But now that we got that out of the way, let's talk about the actual movie itself.
The "Story":
Childhood friends Reed Richards and Ben Grimm have worked together on a prototype teleporter since youth, eventually attracting the attention of Professor Franklin Storm, director of the Baxter Foundation, a government-sponsored research institute for young prodigies. Reed is recruited to join them and aid Storm's children, scientist Sue Storm and engineer Johnny Storm, into completing a "Quantum Gate" designed by Storm's protégé Victor Von Doom.
The experiment is successful, and the facility's supervisor, Dr. Allen, plans to send a group from NASA to venture into a parallel dimension known as "Planet Zero". Disappointed at being denied the chance to join the expedition, Reed, Johnny and Victor along with Ben use the Quantum Gate to embark on an unsanctioned voyage to Planet Zero, which they learn is a world filled with otherworldly substances. Victor attempts to touch the green lava-like substance, causing the ground they are standing on to erupt. Reed, Johnny and Ben return to their shuttle just as Sue brings them back to Earth and Victor is seemingly killed after he falls into the collapsing landscape. The Quantum Gate explodes, altering Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben on a genetic level and granting them superhuman abilities beyond their control: Reed can stretch like rubber, Sue can become invisible and generate force fields, Johnny can engulf his entire body in fire and fly, and Ben acquires a rock-like hide which gives him superhuman strength and durability. They are then placed in government custody to be studied and have their abilities tested. Blaming himself for the accident, Reed escapes from the facility and tries to find a cure for their changes.
One year later in 2015, Reed is now a fugitive and has built a suit that helps him control his ability. Hiding in Central America, he is eventually found by the United States military with Sue's help and captured by Ben, who has become a military asset along with Johnny and Sue. Johnny and Sue have been outfitted with specialized suits designed to help them control their abilities. Reed is brought to Area 57, where Dr. Allen conscripts him into rebuilding the Quantum Gate in exchange for giving Reed the resources to find a cure. Arriving in Planet Zero, Dr. Allen's explorers find Victor, who has been fused to his spacesuit and now possesses telekinetic abilities, and bring him back to Earth. Believing that Earth needs to be destroyed to protect his new home world from future invasions, Victor kills the scientists and soldiers in the base, including Dr. Allen and Professor Storm, and returns to Planet Zero using the Quantum Gate, with Ben, Johnny, Reed and Sue in pursuit.
Now dubbing himself "Doom", Victor activates a portal on Planet Zero using the Quantum Gate and begins consuming the landscape of the Earth using a structure he created from the rock formations in Planet Zero. He is confronted by the four and, after a short battle, Ben punches Doom into the portal's energy beam, disintegrating him while Johnny closes the portal. Returning to Earth, the group is rewarded by the US military for their heroics by being given a new base of operations known as "Central City" to study their abilities without government interference. They decide to use their powers to help people and adopt the mantle of the "Fantastic Four".
youtube
Yeah, I basically just copied and pasted the premise of this film from Wikipedia.
The reason why is because there really isn't a whole lot to talk about.
The plot is paper thin, and the execution doesn't do it any favors.
In terms of adaptation, this film doesn't really adapt any notable Fantastic Four storylines.
The closest thing to this is that it's a loose adaptation of the first volume/arc of Ultimate Fantastic Four.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/34878f3abfe15b5fc9a4e1300902be7d/b53a931fba39cb9e-84/s640x960/b39df96fab384377425634282d0a9e98af869f6f.jpg)
You can see this with elements such as.....
The Four themselves being depicted as teenagers/young adults
Reed and Ben being childhood best friends
Franklin Storm actually being a major character whereas in the 616 universe, he's largely irrelevant
The Baxter Building being turned into The Baxter Foundation
The reason for them getting their powers being a teleportation experiment gone wrong
And Doom being involved with the experiment as well and his famous armor being his actual skin instead
However, that's as far as it goes. They don't really bother to adapt the actual story of that arc, which has the team facing off against The Mole Man.
But one of the strangest story choices with this movie is in the case of Planet Zero.
Planet Zero is reportedly suppose to be Fant4stic's version of The Negative Zone.
Why they didn't just call it The Negative Zone, I have no clue.....
But as most of you know, The Negative Zone is famous for being the realm of one of the Fantastic Four's most prominent foes: Annihilus.
And with their version of The Negative Zone, you would think they would probably feature Annihilus in this movie.
But no! He doesn't appear at all nor is he even alluded to. In fact, Planet Zero is depicted as being a lifeless wasteland, with no living organisms in sight.
The Sucky Tone:
In contrast to the previous 3 FF films, this one is far more darker, serious and grounded.
This was because Trank wanted the tone of the movie to be, in his own words, "gritty, serious and as realistic as possible".
And it's safe to that Fox also encouraged this tone as well.
From the early 2000s into the mid-2010s, a good chunk of superhero films relied on taking superheroes and making them darker, gritty and more grounded than they were in their source material and other adaptations.
This can be largely attributed to the X-Men films, which were more serious and grounded than the comics and their other adaptations.
This was done because after the failure of Batman and Robin, comic books movies were briefly seen as cinema poison.
The X-Men films, Daredevil, Elektra, The Dark Knight trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man duology, and even the first few films of the DC Extended Universe all prided themselves on being more dark, gritter and grounded than their source material and sometimes even predecessors in film.
And while most of these movies are still fondly remembered, I'm gonna have to come out and say this....
I'm not a fan of these films.
Apart from some of these characters just not fitting with a darker and gritty tone, the biggest reason why I don't like these films is because a lot of them reek of this sense of embarrassment and contempt for the source material they're adapting.
Like, some of them are not even being that subtle about it.
youtube
I am so glad this was finally made fun of in an actual Marvel project.
youtube
And in an age where a lot of producers and directors working on a projects based on long, established properties have been open about either not caring or straight up disliking the properties they're working with, its made many of these films age kinda poorly.
However, there were some superheroes films from the 2000s that didn't fall into this trap.
Undoubtedly the biggest is in the case of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.
Those films were unabashedly campy, and were obviously made by people who legitimately cared about, understood and loved Spider-Man.
That's why despite of a having a few faults, the films are still talked about in high regards, even after two decades.
And notably more so than the films I just mentioned.
But back to the film itself, to the Fantastic Four having a dark, gritty and grounded tone.
Most people, myself include, would have to say....
youtube
Fantastic Four, while having their dark and serious moments here and there, are some of the most light-hearted characters in Marvel.
Trying to make them dark and gritty just feels incredibly tryhard.
And as for being grounded and realistic.
That's completely antithetical to the Fantastic Four.
They're adventurers and explorers. And many of their adventures have taken place in space, other dimensions, and alternate realties. It's one of the core appeals of the team.
And as you would expect, this tone did not do the film any favors.
Fant4stic is so. Fucking. Boring.
It is deathly serious with no sense of levity or humor to be detected.
The music is bland and generic, the color grading is dull as hell, and the performances....
Dear God....the performances.
I think this actually perfectly segways into the biggest and most important part of this post:
The "Characters":
One of the strongest draws of The Fantastic Four is, well, The Fantastic Four themselves.
All of them are very likable, charming, interesting and endearing in their own way.
And does Fant4stic capture anything that made these characters so great?
youtube
Let's start off with Reed first.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/11f7c679adf1252f53b546addf0ff11f/b53a931fba39cb9e-1e/s500x750/7234648858e434a82424193230c7d4ba934866e6.jpg)
Reed in the comics and in just about every other medium is a genius, a polymath to exact.
In fact, he's tied with another one of the main characters I'll be talking about soon as being the smartest person in the Marvel Universe.
But besides being intelligent, Reed is also curious, adventurous, charismatic, level-headed, kind, and most importantly of all, passionate.
Reed is passionate about two things:
-His love for his family
-And his love for science and adventure
And while he can be little over-analytical, a little reserved at times, and have a bit of a one-mind track (so much so that he's been headcanon by just about everyone to be autistic), Reed overall is a very kind, caring and compassionate person.
Hell, he (along with the rest of the four) are some of the most morally righteous people in the Marvel Universe alongside Spider-Man and Captain America.
Now let's look at Fant4astic Reed....
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d405017807cda460deef18f08a4fe931/b53a931fba39cb9e-d7/s1280x1920/145a625a8535882fb78be3b99026e5488ad4cd83.jpg)
Apart from being intelligent, level-headed and maybe curious, has none of the traits I just listed.
He's not adventurous.
He's not shown to be all that kind.
He has all the charisma of a funeral service.
And worst of all, he's not very passionate.
In the comics, Reed loves science and is always down to learn something new.
But the way Reed approaches science in the movie, it feels more like an obligation rather than something he's actually passionate about.
Next we have Sue.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/460f5b4e27b75889ce899264821927c3/b53a931fba39cb9e-81/s540x810/9e0998e23f39056b0fd1d5a9deefc9d48371995c.jpg)
Sue is pretty much the mother figure of the four.
Warm, caring, kind, mindful and responsible.
But she's also incredibly terrifying.
Sue's the most powerful member of the four and has proven to be a force to be reckon with for anyone who cares to hurt her family, especially her children.
Now let's look at Fant4astic Sue....
Well, how do l put this in the kindest way possible?
youtube
Yeah. Apart from being introverted, she's also shown to be incredibly sarcastic.
Like, modern animated adult comedy levels of being sarcastic.
And needlessly so.
Apart from still being responsible, Sue shows none of the traits I just listed.
The only character see isn’t needlessly sarcastic to is her and Johnny’s father, Franklin.
This version of the character is the walking definition of a killjoy.
Next we have her brother Johnny.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9eb0c4067401c9fd5e0b0ff42e46d2c8/b53a931fba39cb9e-c4/s540x810/1ac69ed01daf28feec68aa1d8888bb7c30bb8cc1.webp)
Johnny is the little brother of the group, since he’s the youngest.
He’s cocky, brash, hotheaded, a bit of a prankster, and kind of a showoff.
But in spite of that, Johnny is also a very kind and loyal individual.
The dude has been show that he’s willing to die for those he deeply cares for.
Now let’s look at Fant4stic Johnny.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e9671ee32355b67f71942dc4483afb47/b53a931fba39cb9e-88/s1280x1920/38c423b2a57abbd38e2230976ea32b5dc255a4c1.jpg)
Johnny is really the only character who somewhat resembles his original comic counterpart.
But even then, it still feels somewhat subdued.
Plus he has the same issue as Sue with him being needlessly a dick to people.
Like, Johnny had his dickish moments, but wasn't a massive asshole.
And plus, I should probably address the elephant in the room.
As you could probably tell for yourselves, Johnny here is African-American, making him and Sue adopted siblings.
And this would be the very first (and so far only) iterations of the Storm siblings who weren't blood-related.
And in all honesty, I'm not a fan of it.
Having Johnny and Sue not being biologically-related just feels wrong.
That would be like having Mario and Luigi not being related.
Or Goofy and Max.
Or Dante and Vergil.
Sometimes, you can't alter an important familial relationship.
As for why Johnny was made black while Sue wasn't.
Well....
Apparently, the Storm Family were all gonna be black, including Sue. But the higher-ups were not really onboard with Sue being black (I'm not even gonna try to make sense of that). But they were allowed to make Johnny and Franklin black. So thus, Sue ended up being adopted by the Storms.
And I must ask....
Why?
Why did they want to make the entire Storm family black?
I'm guessing it was to give a new fresh take on the characters.
But that's kind of debatable when we get to a point I'll bring up a little later.
And in terms of casting a black Johnny Storm, I don't think Michael B. Jordan was the best choice.
He just doesn't look like how most people would see Johnny as being black.
I think there's two reasons for that.
The hairstyle. Johnny has usually been depicted as having spiky hair. I think if had Michael those upward locs, then I could see him passing for a black Johnny.
The age of the actor. In fact, this applies to all the actors of the four as well. In the film, the four are said to be teenagers, specifically fresh out of high school age. So basically they would be around 17-18 years old. It's hard to see any of them as being around that age range when the actors who played them were, at the time of the film's release, two of them were 28, one of them was 29, and one of them was 32! Did they really just not bother to look for actors who were like college-aged?
Now we come to Ben.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/07a4bb65153efa6391060d5aea9d065c/b53a931fba39cb9e-d6/s540x810/7a65e7d373ac4e7f5398975ad5fff2bd6e29c73d.jpg)
Ben is undoubtedly most people's favorite member of the Fantastic Four.
While gruff, tough and a tad pessimistic and grumpy due to his circumstances, underneath Ben's rocky exterior beats a heart of gold.
He deeply cares for his friends and family and will go out of his way to protect them no matter what.
Now let's look at Fant4astic Ben.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8d7a973f0d19cadcc03f4bbbe44e2e76/b53a931fba39cb9e-50/s540x810/f12442a74cfa59b4f8395b9c2a6da3276bca862f.jpg)
Ben, being only rivaled by the next character we'll be talking about, is the character who barely resembles his original counterpart the most.
First, there's his appearance. Specifically before he became The Thing.
Out of this already not-good cast, Jaime Bell was probably the most miscasted of them all.
For starters, he just doesn't look like Ben Grimm at all.
Like, take a look at this guy and tell me that he looks remotely like the pre-Thing Ben in the comics.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1f2a2317dc0d08d88b94a636eccee3fa/b53a931fba39cb9e-19/s640x960/3a462234a27550995f8b56a384ed236afb8d3804.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7bc8be6d5923764961028cec0454d2b2/b53a931fba39cb9e-4a/s640x960/50f46bd91e5d09b0f9becc2ff69c8c0d45f89f22.jpg)
Basically, Jaime suffers from the same problem that Topher Grace had when he played Venom.
He's too short. Ben, even before becoming The Thing, was usually depicted as being pretty tall, 6'0 to be exact. Jaime is 5'7. The dude is literally no taller than me (and I'm 5'8).
He's way too skinny. Once again, even before becoming The Thing, Ben is usually shown to be a pretty muscular-looking guy. He is canonically a skilled brawler (due to him being part of a street gang during his youth) and played on the football team in high school.
Essentially, even before becoming The Thing, Ben looked like a guy who could and can beat your ass.
This Ben looks like the guy who YOU would be beating the ass of!
Then there's his characterization.
This Ben has none of the traits I just mentioned.
Apart from being kind, he's typically portrayed as being soft-spoken and somewhat meek.
Which just don't fit the character of Ben Grimm at all.
But I think the worst part of his characterization is that he doesn't even have a Brooklyn accent!
youtube
Yeah! He doesn't have a Brooklyn accent! Despite it being one of the most famous elements of his character.
I'm the guy who think that a character should have their accent intact if they originally had it.
I'm one of the few people who find it kinda annoying that Black Widow doesn't speak with a Russian accent anymore despite speaking with one all-time in her appearances pre-MCU.
And I'm sure that I'm the only guy on the planet who actually wants Magneto to speak with a German accent.
But Ben not speaking with a Brooklyn accent feels both disgraceful and just plain wrong.
But perhaps the worst thing about this version of Ben is with his trademark catchphrase: It's Clobberin' Time!
In this film, they decided to give the catchphrase an origin.
Because we all know that what's the fans were certainly asking for it....
But anyway, in the Fant4stic continuity, It's Clobberin' Time was what Ben's abusive older brother who regularly beat him, would say right before kicking his ass!
youtube
Why?
Why was this added?
Who thought this was a good idea?
It adds nothing to this already nothing story.
Having Ben's catchphrase being the result of abuse from his older brother comes off as both incredibly fucked-up and like the rest of this cursed movie, unnecessarily tryhard.
The people who thought that giving this iconic catchphrase a gritty reason for existing need to get repeatedly smacked in the face.
But like I mentioned before, there's only one other character in the movie that rivals Ben in being the biggest spit in the face to their original counterpart.
But I'm gonna save that for next time.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to end this post right here since I'm pretty close to reaching the media post limit.
So this is gonna be a two-parter.
Wasn't the original intent, but hey, you can't win them all.
But tune in next time where I finish looking at this terrible movie.
And beware....I'm not gonna be very kind.

2024 Reading - September
Another productive month. Which I know would rub some readers the wrong way, and sometimes that mindset isn't great for me either, but as a girlie who likes her lists? I'm happy getting to check off stuff.
The biggest accomplishment this month was FINALLY finishing The Disorderly Knights. It took me so long that by the end of the story, I'd already forgotten what happened at the beginning. But it's done, and I have the next book on my shelf. For next year. Maybe.
Total books: 10 | New reads: 9 | 2024 TBR completed: 2 (1 DNF) / 29/36 total | 2024 Reading Goal: 63/100
August | October
potential reading list from September 1st
#1 - The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown - 5/5 stars
After hearing people rave about the movie and then the book, I snagged a cheap copy from my local used bookstore and decided to check it out.
It was so so worth it. Absolutely breathtaking. All of the assorted narratives--the different characters, the historical background, the technical details--came together so perfectly and resulted in a captivating story. I love every bit of it. I cried.
#2 - In the Forests of Serre by Patricia A. McKillip - 5/5 stars ('24 TBR)
This is exactly the sort of story I was craving. Absolutely spellbinding.
More like this: I had the sense this story reminded me of something else I've read, but I'm blanking on it just now. If I remember, I'll come back here. It might have been a fairy tale kind of story. It's a bit like the first Earthsea book. Perhaps Robin McKinley, Patricia C. Wrede, Madeleine L'Engel, Shannon Hale.... Diana Wynne Jones. It feels like a Ghibli movie.
#3 - The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Vol 2 by Beth Brower - 4/5 stars
A fun installment! I am quickly losing track of the cast, but I can totally see the author's vision of this being a delightful period drama.
#4 - The Disorderly Knights by Dorothy Dunnett - 4/5 stars
Note to anyone I've recommended this series to: I unfortunately have to retract that hearty recommendation and replace it with...several caveats.
I finished! Honestly, I don't know why it took so long, because once I made myself sit still and read it was easy-ish going; I just had trouble sitting still.
Ok, so "easy" is not the right word. With this series, the first half of each book tends to be a slow build-up, while the end careens rapidly downhill to the conclusion and the ever-brilliant (and painful) reveal.
And, uh.... This got much darker and more intense than I was prepared for. (If I made a habit of reading more in this line, I might have seen that coming, but epics aren't my usual fare.) Narratively, it all worked very well, but it was right on the edge of what I can tolerate.
Still, with 200 pages left to go, I absolutely planned to keep reading the series, well aware that it would be...an experience. Then I saw a blurb for both Book Four and Book Five, skimmed some super vague reviews for Book Four ("Five Stars. owowowowowowowowowowww") and freaked out. And, against all my usual inclinations, hunted for spoilers. And now I'm scared. (But, weirdly, less stressed about the conclusion? Which is an odd experience.)
#5 - Od Magic by Patricia A. McKillip - 3/5 stars (audio)
This confirms my suspicion that McKillip is one of those hit-or-miss authors for me. The first book of hers that I read was The Changeling Sea, six years ago, and I remember absolutely nothing about it. Then In the Forests of Serre blew me away. Od Magic? Another middling story.
Don't get me wrong; McKillip's writing is gorgeous. It immediately draws you in, connects you to living, breathing characters, and paints the most vivid pictures. But the story here just kind of...wanders along. It's a pleasant journey, but not very exciting.
Note: I didn't dive into "Od Magic" because of how much I loved "In the Forests of Serre". I needed an "O" title, and realized McKillip had a few. 😅
#6 - Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones - 5/5 stars (reread, audio)
We all know I love this. 'Nuff said.
#7 - Yours From the Tower by Sally Nicholls - 4/5 stars
Another Tumblr rec! And a read that had the unfortunate pressure of me getting to it on the heels of 1) a so-so fantasy and 2) a historical fiction adventure that wrung me out. I did my best not to go into it with any expectations outside of being pleasantly charmed, and charmed I was. 90% of it was a fun, light read with just a touch of drama, but my stars, the end had me rolling. There's something so fun about epistolary novels when it comes to twists and big reveals.
#8 - Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher - 5/5 stars (audio)
A gorgeous little story.
#9 - Bryony and Roses by T. Kingfisher - 4/5 stars (audio)
Largely enjoyable, but the ending felt rushed.
#10 - The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke - 4/5 stars
An impulse pick from the library. I wanted something short and sweet and discovered this after finishing Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. As is becoming a habit with Clarke's writing, I enjoyed this book. I loved the variety of styles and tones within the collection.
DNF*
The Element of Fire by Martha Wells - Not a bad story, but by the 15% mark I remained bored and vaguely confused and unable to pay attention, so I gave up. I like Wells's writing style (obviously), but this was evidently her debut and is a bit dull around the edges. For some reason it reminded me vaguely of The Curse of Chalion, which I love, so might be worth checking out if you enjoy Lois McMaster Bujold. Goodreads also shows that fans of T. Kingfisher might enjoy this one as well. (Note: Paladin's Grace [below] also had the same general feel as The Element of Fire and The Curse of Chalion)
The Anthropology of Turquoise: Reflections on Desert, Sea, Stone, and Sky by Ellen Meloy ('24 TBR) - I was hoping for a more scientific exploration of color. Instead, this book is a collection of (in my and my friends' opinions) weirdly stuffy, stilted essays. I don't usually mind slow, descriptive/lyrical writing, but this is something else. If you don't mind a deeply personal and conversational writing style and a book you can sit with for several months, definitely check this one out, because it has merit; it's just not for me.
Zao's Tales by J.A. Sommer - I'm still vaguely unclear on how this book arrived on my shelf (it was a gift from my mother and she bought it to support someone?). Decidedly not for me. Also...now I don't have a "Z" title for my alphabet challenge lol.
just kidding, I found another one that was kind of on my radar and ordered it from the library, whoo
Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher - I'm learning that Kingfisher really straddles the line on what I'm willing to tolerate content-wise. This one was a "no" based on that.
The Sea at the End of Everything by Emily McCosh - The writing style was not for me. Sorry, Ruby.
*I'm starting to wonder if I should bother recording books I DNF.... They make up fully a third of the books I've picked up this year.
Currently Reading:
The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks - just started

August Reads
Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
This book reminded me a lot of Ella Enchanted for some reason. It had a very similar vibe with the love story and the adventure. Wit/Hoid was the narrator which was delightful. I always love a good immortal silly guy who's actually wise and powerful that shows up all the time. Also this book has pirates, so big selling point for me. And I thought the whole spore thing going on with Tress's planet was really cool. 12 moons is a bit excessive though lol. I really liked this book a lot, it was fun. Definitely a book I'll be rereading at some point I think.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Book of Bill by Bill Cipher Alex Hirsch
Oh Gravity Falls my beloved. This show is still like top 10 for me tbh. It just fits my brand of weird so well. And idk if I was always like this or if I'm like this because of Gravity Falls lol. I can't believe we got new content in 2024. Also, Ford and Bill are totally exes. Mabel's right.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Circe by Madeline Miller
I will always love a good greek mythology retelling. I was (and will always be) a Percy Jackson kid at heart. I will admit, though, I didn't know a ton about Circe going into this, as I often confused her and Calypso. But as per any mythology based book I read, there were a lot of ventures to wikipedia to learn a bit more about who's who and what else they were involved in. Oddly enough, though, I hated The Odyssey when i had to read it in high school. If there's 1000 Odysseus haters, I'm one of them, etc., etc. or whatever. But Penelope (my beloved) was done right in this book. I also liked that Circe is a morally grey protagonist in the story. She does a lot of stuff that is not really very good, but I support women's wrongs so I thought she was super interesting. And altogether i just really liked this book. There's something about the way Madeline Miller writes that hits just right for me.
4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
I love the Wayward Children series so much. I was a lot like Lundy as a kid. Very about rules and books and pretty alone. I really found the goblin market super intriguing and I think it's one of the worlds from the series I would do best in. It's all about fair deals so it can be harsh at times but it was always fair. I knew the end of the book was coming since Lundy was a character in previous books but it did still hit hard.
4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire
More Wayward Children! The main character of this book was intersex, which I didn't actually know going into it, but it was neat cause I don't think I've ever read a book with an intersex character before. I really liked the setting of this book. The Hooflands seem to be one of the least harrowing worlds in the series. I loved the centaurs that took care of Regan. They were fun.
Belladonna by Adalyn Grace
4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
This one was really good. I've had this book for a while now and I just haven't got around to reading it until now and I'm so glad I finally picked it up. I really liked both the main character and the love interest, which is kinda rare for me. The whole concept of a girl that's quite literally followed by death was really cool and very well done. I'm excited to read the rest of the series, which I believe is recently completed.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm trying so hard not to finish all the Sanderson books (but mostly the stormlight archive) before Wind and Truth comes out in December. So I'm reading standalones and definitely not Rythm of War. Tell me why this book took me so long to finish though. I've read stormlight archive books in less time than this took me. It wasn't even that I disliked this book in any way I just don't think it grabbed me as much and I struggled to make myself sit down and read it. This book was super heavy on the politics and religious aspects of the plot and I think that may have been what caused it to drag for me since I tend to be a bit more interested in the magic aspect of fantasy books. But luckily that did pick up a bit more toward the end. But anyway! I loved Sarene in particular. I thought she was so cool. She was manipulating the hell out of people the whole book and I loved it. The end did make me interested see what Sanderson will do in the sequel.
3.75/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️

20 questions for fic writers
thank you for the tags @maggiemayhemnj @perotovar @freelancearsonist @schnarfer 💗
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
55, I don't post everything there because I usually forget it exists, but it also has some of my older works on it from other fandoms. I don't really get ao3 - it just sort of feels like shouting into a void.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
93,343 (cannot write long fic to save my life)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
PPCU my beloved
4. Top five fics by kudos
Embarrassing because these are old old fics and even then they have barely any kudos lmao but I guess I'll tell you:
My Soul in the Stars - tumblr link (Poe Dameron x reader)
Anathema (August Walker x reader, abandoned series)
Nexus - tumblr link (Ezra & Cee)
Yours (August Walker x reader)
Survive (August Walker x reader)
but top 5 by notes on tumblr is completely different:
Rise (Joel x reader)
Closer to light (Javi P x reader)
inhale, exhale (Joel x reader)
Akrasia (Ezra x reader)
Spark (our house of flames pt 1) (Joel x reader)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try to! They mean the world to me but sometimes I get overwhelmed and feel dumb just saying 'thank you' over and over.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
hm probably the smokes the ghost that keeps you close (Javi P x reader) or the San Valentin mini-series (Javi P x reader...what can I say, Javi and angst just works)
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
the kind of love you've been dreaming of (marcus p x reader) is pretty sickeningly sweet all the way through, they're very happy.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not anymore no, I used to get shit about my Ezra fics and my August Walker fics back in the day.
9. Do you write smut?
Oh yes
10. Craziest crossover?
I haven't written any yet but I guess the Marcus M/Dieter fic when its done?
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No thank god
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I dream of co-writing with @chronically-ghosted and @perotovar one day 💞
14. All time favorite ship?
I've never been much of a shipper, but probably Bobbie/Chrisjen (The Expanse)
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I'd love to finish take the long way home (Marcus P x reader) one day, I had such vision for it. But Marcus is really just not my guy right now and I don't see myself going back to it any time soon.
16. What are your writing strengths?
🤷lmao do i have any right now
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Probably dialogue. Descriptions. My grammar is atrocious. Making things interesting?? romance??
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Great, but run it by a native speaker before if you are not one.
19. First fandom you wrote in?
It was either h*rry p*tter or Lord of the Rings.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
despite the fact that no one else likes it, I love and am so proud of our house of flames - I'm working on the final chapter and it's so emotional and I love it!

Collaboration Project! Looking for Ushiten + Kuroken writer(s)
About
Hi guys so while I was digging through my old works I found an abandoned project from years ago (2021?) and I kind of want to pick it back up
It's for Haikyuu pairings based on different songs from the Trying Season 2 Apple TV Soundtrack and I'm looking for someone who would be interested in writing Neck of the Woods for Ushiten and someone who could write Helicopter for Kuroken! I'm just not sure I can do these pairings justice :)
Guidelines
✿ SFW only ✿ No angst ending (in the middle is fine, the ending must only be fluff or hurt/comfort) ✿ Minimum 1k word count ✿ To sign up, send an ask specifying which pairing you're interested in, or sign up for both! Even if you sign up for both, I may only select you for one so please specify if you have a preference :) ✿ I plan on posting these to AO3; if you don't have an AO3 account I would prefer you make your own, but if you don't want to I will post it for you and credit/link your Tumblr account ✿ If you have an AO3, you can post it to your own account while adding me as a co-author so I can still add it to the series! ✿ I did start to write a little and/or had ideas of where to take it, you can choose to work off of what I have or rewrite it entirely! I do ask you to discuss your general ideas with me though :) ✿ PLEASE DON'T DISCUSS THE DETAILS OF YOUR FIC WITH ANYONE OUTSIDE THE PROJECT!! If you need a beta reader, I will happily do that for you (I don't bite, I promise), and if there's another writer for the other fic then you can totally talk to them about it too! ✿ Ushiten Specific: Preferably from Tendou's POV
Deadlines
Ushiten: Preferably by mid-August but no worries if it's not ready. However, since I want to post these fics in the same order as the album tracklist, I do have to post this one first :) Kuroken: As mentioned above, I want to post these in order and Kuroken is 4th in the list. I'm writing the 2nd and 3rd works, so your deadline will depend on how quickly I can get those done; I'll assign a more concrete deadline after the 2nd work is uploaded!
Applications will close at the end of the day on August 7th (CST).
