There's a line in Steven Brust's Dragaera book, Issola (Chapter 2) about Sethra Lavode, a very ancient magic user:
“she had forgotten more of sorcery, even the forbidden sorcery of the ancient world, than anyone else would ever learn. . . . Her origin was in prehistory, and some had come to believe that she was the living personification of the world itself, that it would end when she ended.” And I think about it every day.
Please do cite the deep magic to me actually. I may have been there when it was written but I am very forgetful
#also this is taking out the funny part of the quotation but ah well#anyway everyone should read these books#particularly Issola it's one of my favorites#this scene lives rent-free in my head#“I doubted this myself: I mislike the idea of a living personification being undead.”#okay there's the funny part#the deep magic#the ancient lore#Vlad and Sethra's friendship gives me life#anyway if you like fantasy novels about sarcastic fencing thief assassins who are very tired of classist elves#also if you like fantasy about cooking and witchcraft#and male witches#and vampires#that is also very funny
