The Harvest Moon is the full Moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox date (September 22, 2024). This means that either September or October’s full Moon may take on the name “Harvest Moon” instead of its traditional name. Similarly, the Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon, meaning it can occur in either October or November.
The Harvest Moon & the Hunter’s Moon are unique in that they are not directly related to this folklore or restricted to a single month. Instead, they are tied to an astronomical event: the autumnal equinox!
• October’s full Hunter Moon orbits closer to Earth than any of the other full Moons this year, making one of the four supermoons of 2024! As the Moon drifts over the horizon around sunset, it may appear larger & more orange—how perfect for the fall season!
It is believed that this name originates from the fact that it was a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold winter by going hunting. This is because animals were beginning to fatten up in preparation for the winter season. Moreover, since fields had recently been cleared out under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily spot deer & other animals that had come out to search for remaining scraps. Additionally, foxes & wolves would also come out to prey on these animals.

Samhain is about halfway between the autumnal equinox & winter solstice. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals along with Imbolc, Beltane, & Lughnasa. Historically it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, & the Isle of Man.
Samhain is believed to have Celtic pagan origins & some Neolithic passage tombs in Great Britain & Ireland are aligned with the sunrise at the time of Samhain. It is mentioned in the earliest Irish literature, from the 9th century & is associated with many important events in Irish mythology.
The early literature says great gatherings & feasts marked Samhain when the ancient burial mounds were open, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Some of the literature also associates Samhain with bonfires & sacrifices.
• According to Irish mythology, Samhain (like Beltane) was a time when the 'doorways' to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings and the souls of the dead to come into our world; while Beltane was a summer festival for the living, Samhain "was essentially a festival for the dead".
•The festival was not recorded in detail until the early modern era. It was when cattle were brought down from the summer pastures & livestock were slaughtered. Special bonfires were lit, which were deemed to have protective & cleansing powers.
At Samhain, the aos sí were appeased with offerings of food & drink to ensure the people & livestock survived the winter. The souls of dead kin were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality & a place was set at the table for them during a meal. Divination was also a big part of the festival & often involved nuts & apples.
Mumming & guising were part of the festival from at least the early modern era, whereby people went door-to-door in costume, reciting verses in exchange for food. The costumes may have been a way of imitating & disguising oneself from the aos sí.
• In the late 19th century, John Rhys and James Frazer suggested it had been the "Celtic New Year", but that is disputed.
Some believe it is the time of The Goddess' mourning the death of The God until his rebirth at Yule. The Goddess' sadness can be seen in the shortening, darkening days & the arrival or cold weather.
Related festivals:
• Halloween( October 31st)-
In popular culture, the day has become a celebration of horror, being associated with the macabre and supernatural.
•One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots. Some go further & suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow's Day, along with its eve, by the early Church. Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow's Day.
Popular Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising & ghouling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, & watching horror or Halloween-themed films
• Day of the Dead(November 1st-2nd)-
el Día de Muertos or el Día de los Muertos
The multi-day holiday involves family & friends gathering to pay respects & to remember friends & family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events & anecdotes about the departed. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.
•The observance falls during the Christian period of Allhallowtide.
Traditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras & marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods & beverages of the departed & visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased.
The celebration is not solely focused on the dead, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls, to share traditional pan de muerto with family & friends, & to write light-hearted & often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends & acquaintances, a literary form known as calaveras literarias.
Some argue that there are Indigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom & it has become a way to remember those forebears of Mexican culture.
• All Saint's Day(November 1st)-
Also known as All Hallows' Day or the Feast of All Saints is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honour of all the saints of the Church, whether they are known or unknown.

Hello! As an Irish reconstructionist, do you maybe know any specific traditions in celebrating Mean Geimhreadh (Alban Arthan?? Are these the same things??)
Ok, so for me personally this is a REALLY complicated question. I focus my reconstructionism on ~approximately~ Iron Age traditions (I feel this is an 'authentically' 'Celtic Irish' period being an age when there is abundant evidence of the Pre-Christian religion we know of as 'pagan Irish' being practiced and not yet being blended with Christian practices and beliefs).
So as such I don't do anything for Meán Geimhridh. That is not necessarily to say that the peoples of the Iron Age didn't recognize the long hours of darkness on this day, because I am certain they did, but that as far as the evidence that is available to us it was not something that held great religious importance. While the Stone Age religion being practiced seemed to place great importance on the solstices (marking them very clearly in the monolithic monuments and passage tombs they built) and later the dates held importance to the blended cultures of Irish/Scandinavian (yule) and Irish/Christian (Christmas), the period of time I focus on is oddly silent about these solar phenomenon. Apparently, only being noted by the classical writers as Alban Arthan.
However, even here there is a great level of debate. I subscribe to the theory that this particular description of religious activity was actually a case of mistaken identity and was actually speaking of, not the 'Keltoí' peoples, but the Germanic tribes further north (who we KNOW would have recognized this time of year and KNOW had a special religious connection with mistletoe). Furthermore, even IF this historical account WAS speaking of what we think of as the 'celtic' cultures it was obviously addressing an act preformed on the continent, which we know held similar but separate traditions from the insular 'Celts'.
Which brings us back to looking at any evidence for Pre-Christian/Post-Stone Age traditions that mark this time, and we do see some (just not in so much in Ireland). In the UK we see a widespread tradition at this time of year involving the Wren and straw boys, but as far as my research can tell it was likely spread through the UK in its Christian guise and any pagan roots it has are likely Welsh is origin.
Lastly, there is the widespread idea of the Mistletoe King and the Oak King.... this, in my opinion, is a jumbled fabrication of the pagan renaissance of the 1800s, and so while it can be considered 'traditional' at this point, holds no more historical weight then the Wiccan 'wheel of the year.'
At the end of the day, I don't hold any religious significance to the event BUT if I were to try doing something I felt was historically accurate I would keep a fire stoked, keep my family and friends close, eat and drink and share stories and songs to keep us all entertained as we enjoyed each others company (so the basic blueprint for any winter festival in most of the world 😅)

Oícheanta Stróib (Strobe Nights)
Ceol: kz
Liricí: Kajuki-P
Bunteideal: ストロボナイツ
Amhránaí: Hatsune Miku
Aistriúchán Béarla: BerrySubs
Snítheach agus ag lonrú
Mar gur mhaith liom tú a aimsithe orm, táim anseo
Ag an comhartha duine éigin ag sroicheadh amach a lámh,
Soilsíonn an réalta, ag cas go bog,
As ghorm
Tháinig an céad geimhreadh
Sa phairc gan duine ar bith
Macallaíonn an fhuaim na réaltaí ag bualadh i mo chliabhrach
An spéir a d’fhéach mé suas ar ón fhoireann luascán,
Cé nach raibh a fhios agam a n-ainm,
Ba mhaith liom dul gar dóibh agus cóiméad a éiriú
An solas ag rith agus ag lonrú,
Bhí gach duine ag díriú a méara air, ag gáire
An bhfuil tú ag glaoch orm?
Tabharfaidh mé níos mó cumhacht chun a cheangail
Agus sroicheadh duit
Tá na scamaill lomracha ag imeacht
Bhí an gaoth ag iompar iad
Frithcaitheann an dorchadas oíche mo chuma
Le deireanas, mar gheall ar na soilse sráide,
Tá daoine ag déanamh dearmad go hiomlán ar na réaltaí
Mar go bhfuil sé seo an deireadh,
Coinnigh do shúile orm
Snítheach agus ag lonrú
Mar gur mhaith liom tú a aimsithe orm, táim anseo
Ag an comhartha duine éigin ag sroicheadh amach a lámh,
Soilsíonn an réalta, ag cas go bog,
As ghorm
An réalta ag rith agus ag lonrú,
Cuimhním é agus an spéir sin ina bhíomar ag imirt
Na rianta an tsolais drithleach agus ag imeacht
Buailimis le chéile, sa spéir seo,
Go cinnte

SSO OC intro: Niamh Polarbear
i got a really good response on my last sso oc drawings which is amazing? thank you guys so much njdfjgm
so here's a bit more of a formal introduction for niamh.
so. niamh polarbear. my main sso oc.
she's the main pov character of the storyline/narrative that i have in my head for her and the honestly extremely expansive cast of sso ocs? i've kinda considered that i might start posting that on here in comic form or somesuch cos i love my sso ocs and i wanna share their story with people
that being said that probably won't happen until like next month at the earliest because i am a busy little guy!
niamh actually only exists because i realized one day that you could have an sso account with the last name polarbear and everything kind of spiraled from there? i didn't start making friends for her or a storyline around them until very recently.
niamh is not a soul rider and the soul riders from canon actually don't exist in her universe at all. basically almost all of the npcs from in-game canon either don't exist in niamh's universe or have somehow been removed from the storyline (if they were relevant in the first place).
so, for example, the cloudmill family (and potentially alex as well) still exist, but alex isn't the lightning circle soul rider.
there actually isn't one at all right now, actually. niamh is older than the soul riders by a good amount. so the start of her narrative is in between soul rider generations, like, think a couple of years before lisa moves to jorvik type thing.
niamh grew up on a farm in ireland, but her dad was jorvegian and she grew up hearing a lot about jorvik. she always related to jorvegian folklore a lot.
so at age 18 she moved to jorvik to study jorvegian and kallter folklore, do archeology and study the valley of the hidden dinosaur. dino valley wildlife, the kallstones, all that jazz. and while she was there, she met snowglobe (and geimhreadh, but that came later) and got roped up into all this keepers of aideen + fighting garnok stuff.
but while she's friendly with the keepers and works with them, now she's kind of a rhiannon character. she doesn't live in valedale or work for the keepers, she just does her own thing (she's living in dino valley now) but the keepers call on her for help a lot.
she is very moon circle overall, she's very quiet and selfless and while she's a big softie inside she seems extremely intimidating to those that meet her because. she is tall buff and stoic. niamh is living proof that just because you're nerd doesn't mean you can't be built like a brick shithouse
anyway that's all i'm gonna share about her for now. this is already a very long post BUT i love my ocs a lot and i might drop introductions like this about some of niamh's other friends as well or, like i mentioned, i might start posting the Niamh Story on tumblr once i have the time
#i don't feel qualified to id this image someone else can do that if they want to#questions are welcome and appreciated i would love to talk more about niamh and her friends#+ i just kinda hope people like her so i'm not destroying people's interest in my art by posting horse girl ocs on the reg lol#star stable#star stable online#sso#ssoblr#sso oc#oc intros#oc tag#niamh tag#oc#horse girls oc tag

A reference for the fuzzy! And some lore.
The very last Stareater. Descended from "the Great Singularity" Zzyzx, Zurg Geimhreadh was born and raised on the great gathering of planets that was the Stareater's home. He gained his wings and learned to fly as a teen. as a young adult, he barely escaped with his life when the gathering of planets was destroyed by the young Galactic Alliance. Left only with the battle armor of his great ancestor, he set out to begin his vengeance.
He found the grubs, a scorned race with the ability to communicate non- verbally amongst each other, and saved them from extinction. Granting them a planet of their own, and devising a means to house, clothe, feed, and entertain them. The project took many years, and when he finally had everything built and developed for them, they had already taken to calling him their emperor, since their empress had been exterminated. He wasnt sure how to feel about the title at first, but in gathering the materials to bring the grubs modern comforts, he had grown and nurtured a reputation for being incredibly evil. He took on the Emperor title, Evil Emperor Zurg.

It is believed that this name originates from the fact that it was a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold winter by going hunting. This is because animals were beginning to fatten up in preparation for the winter season. Moreover, since fields had recently been cleared out under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily spot deer and other animals that had come out to search for remaining scraps. Additionally, foxes and wolves would also come out to prey on these animals.
The earliest use of the term “Hunter’s Moon,” cited in the Oxford English Dictionary, is from 1710. Some sources suggest that other names for the Hunter’s Moon are the Sanguine or Blood Moon, either associated with the blood from hunting or the color of the changing autumn leaves.

• Day of the Dead- (Spanish: Día de Muertos or Día de los Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed & is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage. Although related to the simultaneous Christian remembrances for Hallowtide, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival on 1 November marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or "darker half" of the year. Celebrations begin on the evening of 31 October, since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset.
This fire festival is celebrated on October 31st & is considered the Pagan New Year. It is the first Sabbat on the Wheel of the Year, a cross-quarter festival & the third (final) harvest festival of the mundane year. This is the time when the veil between the worlds of the living & those who have passed is the thinnest, which allows greater communication between the two
Some believe this is the time of the Goddess's mourning of the death of the God until his rebirth at Yule. The Goddess's sadness can be seen in the shortening, darkening days & the arrival of cold weather
