“I wanna make it crystal clear that I won't give in to the fear.”
The Texas heat is always unforgiving this time of year. But your garden was starting to look horrendous, so you had decided to just suck it up and get some yard work done. Now, as you kneel in the dirt, your gloved hands deep in the soil and back aching from bending over for so long, you think maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.
The sound of rocks shifting under heavy footsteps has you looking over your shoulder to see a figure approaching. You raise your hand to shield your eyes from the sun shining so brightly behind the stranger, their silhouette being the only thing you can make out. “Can I help you?” you say in a polite, yet cautious voice.
Your heart nearly stops when an all-too-familiar baritone replies, “Hola, bonita,” as he stops a few feet in front of you - well, technically behind you. Slowly rising to your feet, your eyes fully adjust to the sunlight as you take in the sight of the first man you ever fell in love with. Javier.
He mostly looks the same, save for the slight tan of his skin, along with a few worry lines and wrinkles that have formed over the years since he-
Since he left you.
“Javier,” you state, your voice betraying you when it cracks on the last syllable. What is he doing here? When did he - come back?
The silence drags on as the two of you study each other, though his expression is much softer than your confused one. “What are you doing here?” you ask at the same time he says, “You look good.” He chuckles, the sound making your stomach flip as your cheeks flush.
That laugh - god, it’s been so long since you’ve heard it, the last time being the night before he left for Columbia to aid in the capture of Pablo Escobar. Though at the time, you didn’t actually know it would be the last time you’d see him for years to come. You didn’t learn that bit of information until the next morning when you woke up to find a letter in your mailbox - a short apology for his sudden departure.
But you’d suspected it was more like “fleeing,” especially after you’d told him how you truly felt about him just the night before. Though you suppose you should’ve known better - Javier Peña never was a man who could be committed to one woman for longer than a few nights. Even if that woman was you - his best friend since elementary school.
Lost in reminiscent thoughts of the two of you together, you don’t notice Javier taking a couple steps closer to where you’re standing. “I just got back a couple days ago and...I needed to see you,” he looks away for a moment, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
Well, at least he has the decency to look ashamed.
“OK, you’ve seen me. Now you can go,” you turn around and head towards the front door to your house, leaving your garden a half-done mess. You’ve just reached the first step of the porch when he reaches for your wrist, “Wait - I...I’m sorry, for leaving.”
Releasing a weary sigh, you turn and face him again, his eyes filled with sincerity and something akin to desperation. Your heart instinctively aches to comfort him, but you know that’s not your place - not anymore. “Why?” you ask quietly and the regret lining his features tells you he knows you’re not just referring to why he’s sorry, but why he actually left in the first place without so much as a good-bye. Because you both know you didn’t deserve to find out he was leaving from some piece of paper left on your fucking doorstep.
“I didn’t know how to tell you - that I was assigned to the unit in Columbia. And I couldn’t face you - not after everything you’d said...about-”
“I remember,” you cut him off, tears burning at the corners of your eyes. You bite your bottom lip as it threatens to quiver, the emotions you’ve been suppressing for so long rising to the surface. “You broke my fucking heart, Javi,” your voice breaks, barely above a whisper, as a tear glides down your cheek.
“I know,” he admits in a voice just as softly as he closes his eyes for a moment, releasing a shaky breath, “God, I know, bonita. I - I always made you think your feelings for me were totally one-sided…” he takes a deep breath, sliding his hand down your wrist and holding your right hand in both of his, “but...that wasn’t true,” he confesses, his words landing like a punch to the gut.
Your breath hitches when you finally process what he’s said, the meaning behind his words gripping your heart like a vise. He...feels the same way?
His dark eyes search yours, pleading for you to understand - for you to forgive him. But you’ve fallen speechless as you try to think of a response, barely able to voice a weak, “W-what?”
As you remain in a state of shock, Javi reaches for your other hand, coming to stand in front of you, his eyes never leaving yours. “Bonita, I-” he starts but then his brow furrows as he looks down at your left hand, his fingers feeling for something under your gardening glove.
The look of realization on his face is what finally snaps you out of your trance-like state. You swallow hard as you remove the glove from your left hand, bringing it up closer to eye level to show him-
“I’m engaged,” you croak out, your words laced with regret, and you quickly push away every thought rushing to the forefront of your mind. You refuse to acknowledge any bit of reasoning as to why your heart is breaking from sharing the news of your engagement with the man who basically just confessed his love for you.
“Oh,” he swallows hard, his gaze fixated on the simple diamond that suddenly feels like it’s cutting off circulation to your finger. His grip loosens as he releases your hands, wiping his own hand down his face as he turns away, muttering, “Of course you are - soy más pendejo,” he trails off, his back facing you.
You're frozen at the bottom of the porch, clutching your gardening glove to the point of making your knuckles ache. His hands rest on his hips, his head dropping for a moment as he takes one, two, three breaths before turning to face you once more.
Your heart begins to race as he watches you for a moment, his expression unreadable. Though, the sadness in his eyes is impossible to miss.
Clenching his jaw, he nods his head once like he’s come to some kind of decision. “Felicidades, bonita. I hope your prometido knows how lucky he is,” he offers a tight-lipped smile before turning on his heel and walking away. It takes a minute for your legs to finally spring into action as you stumble after him, “Javi, wait!” you drop the glove on the ground, no longer caring about the mess in your front yard.
He skids to a stop but remains facing forward, his shoulders tense. Walking around his brooding figure, you face him head-on, “It’s been years since I’ve even heard from you, Javi - you can’t just-” you shake your head incredulously, all the hurt and confusion from his abandonment manifesting itself as anger, “you don’t get to do this to me. You don’t just get to leave, come back and say you have feelings for me - and then fucking leave again!”
Your chest rises and falls with the same fierce intensity coating your words, but you refuse to back down, “Why did you even come here if you were just gonna leave the minute I rejected you? I mean, what the hell was I supposed to do after you left? Sit around and sulk because my best friend - the man I love - decided to take a job in Columbia, and didn’t even say good-bye?!”
Your hands fly to your hair in frustration as you start to pace up and down the sidewalk, angry tears welling in your eyes. No, I’m not crying over him again - I did enough of that when he left. But the memory of you sitting on the hardwood floor in your living room, clutching his letter to your chest as you sobbed for hours, has fresh tears spilling onto your cheeks.
“‘Love’, not… ‘loved’?” he asks carefully as he watches you closely, holding his breath while you wipe your face clean with the front of your shirt. You look at him with a furrowed brow, “What?” The adrenaline from your outburst is quickly fading, exhaustion taking its place.
After a beat, you meet his eyes, which are swimming with emotion as he elaborates, “You said ‘the man I love’... not ‘the man I loved.” His face gives nothing away, but you're taken aback when you see an echo of something in his eyes - hope.
You slowly shake your head, “Javi-” but he cuts you off with a desperate plea.
“Please, just-” he takes a step toward you, his hands reaching out to lightly grip your arms, “tell me - tell me you feel nothing for me anymore and I'll leave you alone...for good.” And from the pained look plaguing his features, you know he’ll keep that promise - he'll walk out of your life, taking all the pain and sorrow he’s caused you along with him.
You grip his forearm with a shaky hand, holding onto him like he’s the only thing anchoring you to this moment. Your lip trembles and his brow furrows deeper in concern as your breathing picks up, your entire being overwhelmed by the emotions boiling over within you.
“I...can't,” you breathe out, looking into his dark eyes as you bring your hands to his face, your fingers hesitantly stroking his cheek. His chest is rising and falling to the same tempo as yours, his lips slightly parted as you trace your fingers over his bottom lip, mesmerized by the curve and slight pout that permanently lives there.
“Bonita-” but it's your turn to interrupt him, only this time it's not with words. You cradle his face in your hands and push up on the tips of your toes until your lips meet his - and the rest of the world fades away.

Meeting His Family
Summary: you’re meeting his family for the first time and this is how you react to the occasion.
Word Count: 2244
Zabdiel: you were nervous. Your leg was bouncing the whole way on the flight to Puerto Rico and was bouncing even more now during the car ride to his parents house. Zabdiel took notice of this and if it was anyone else, he would’ve been annoyed at the excessive leg bouncing but he found it cute because it was you. He also admired how much you cared to impress his parents even though he knew that it wouldn’t take much.
“Amor, it’s going to be okay.” He whispers into your ear as you both step out of the car. You take a shaky breath and try to iron out any creases in your clothes with your hands.
“Do I look okay? Should I have dressed up more? Oh gosh, I really should have put more effort in-” Zabdiel cut off your rambling with a soft kiss to your lips.
“Te ves perfecto.” He gave you a smile and you returned the gesture. Before you knew it, you were walking up to the door of your boyfriend’s parent’s house. Zabdiel didn’t even need to knock before the couple answered the door, smiling brightly at the two of you.
“Hola!” You managed to squeak out which caused everyone to laugh at you. His mother pulled you inside and pulled you into a tight embrace which made you feel slightly more at ease.
Once she pulled away, his father gave you a hug but his was much more tame.
“¡Hemos estado tan emocionados por esto! hemos estado molestando a Zabdiel durante meses, preguntándole cuándo podemos reunirnos con usted. Eres muy bonita, ven, vamos a charlar.“ You laughed and tried your hardest to understand what she was saying. You were able to understand almost everything in Spanish but Zabdiel’s Mum was speaking at a pace that was far too quick for you to understand everything.
She pulled you into the kitchen where the two of you finished food preparations for dinner. She had been telling you funny stories of Zabdiel from when he was young and you were telling her about all the funny moments that you had witnessed from your time being in a relationship with him.
During dinner, the four of you chatted with no awkwardness which you were grateful for.
After dinner, you all sat down in the living room and his mother put on a film. Of course, it was in Spanish. Normally, you wouldn’t mind watching a Spanish film but communicating with people in a language that wasn’t yours all day was mentally exhausting.
You felt Zabdiel wrap his arms around you as you snuggled in closer to his side. You were beginning to lose your concentration as a result of your mental exhaustion.
Not long after the film finished, Zabdiel decided that you would both leave.
“Muchas gracias por tenerme, me ha encantado cada minuto. Fue un placer conocerlos a ambos.“ You smiled at your boyfriend’s parents who gushed to you about how much they enjoyed the night.
“They love you, mi amor.” Zabdiel smiled widely as he lead you to the car and you walked with a smile, glad that the night went perfectly to plan.
Joel: You had been trying to put this off for months but you realised that you couldn’t put it off any longer without offending your boyfriend. Family was everything to him, you knew that and that’s what scared you the most. He always values the opinion of his family and if they don’t like you, you weren’t sure what that mean for your relationship.
“Joel, what if they don’t like me?” You voiced your worries on the way to his family’s house.
“They’ll love you Y/N, you don’t have to worry so much.” He laughed and pressed a soft kiss to your cheeks but you let out a sigh.
“Yeah but, what if they don’t?” He looked over at you and that was when he realised that the nerves were more than what they seemed.
“Then it’s their loss because you’re amazing and I don’t want anyone else.” You smiled slightly and he smiled at your smile.
“And that’s it?” You questioned once again. His eyebrows furrowed together as he listened to you talk.
“Of course it is, why wouldn’t it be?” He scooted closer to you in the back of the taxi and took your hands in his as he looked into your eyes.
“I just know how much you love your family and if they don’t approve of us, I don’t want you to have tension with your family but I also don’t want it to be the end of us.” He shook his head at you and brought you into his arms.
“I assure you that if that were to happen, we would work through it. And I say the word ‘if’ because I’m like 99% sure that it won’t happen.” You smiled and looked out the window, recognising this to be the house that Joel had showed you in so many of his childhood pictures.
You both stepped out of the car to be greeted by his family. They immediately embraced the two of you in tight hugs and you smiled, letting your nerves decrease.
“So, Y/N, Joel tells us that you like soccer.” Joel’s younger brother, Israel spoke to you.
“Yeah, it’s called football where I’m from though.” You laughed as they laughed along with you.
“So here’s the ultimate question. Answer this right and you’re part of the family. What’s the offside rule?” You breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that you could answer this question with ease.
And so you answered the question correctly and were immediately welcomed into the Pimentel family.
Erick: You weren’t as nervous as you felt you should be when meeting Erick’s family because you had met his mother when he brought you to a few tour dates. The two of you had gotten along great but you were yet to meet his sisters and his father. Both Erick and his mother had assured you that they would love you which definitely put your mind to ease slightly.
“¿Estás nervioso?“ Your boyfriend asked you and you shrugged your shoulders slightly.
“No estoy seguro. Siento que debería estar más nervioso, pero ya tengo el sello de aprobación de tu madre.“ You admitted and your boyfriend smiled, feeling glad that you weren’t nervous. He didn’t want you to feel nervous. He had spoken about you to his family loads of times and he was sure that they loved you almost as much as he did from the sound of you. He had gushed to his sister many times about how amazing you were and he knew that his sister was just glad that he had found someone who could make him so happy.
“Estaban aquí, hermosa.” You smiled up at your boyfriend and jumped out of the car, excitement beginning to fill you instead of nerves.
“Estoy emocionada.” You admitted and watched as your boyfriend started to grin from ear to ear.
“Dale.” He grabbed your hand and you walked towards the family that had been awaiting your arrival. Before you could introduce yourself, Erick’s sister had thrown herself at you. She wrapped her arms around you so tightly, you felt as if you couldn’t breath.
“Bienvenida a la familia.” She smiled when she pulled away and everyone laughed at the look of relief on your face.
“Creo que le quitaste todas las palabras a la pobre chica con ese abrazo, mija.” Erick’s Dad joked which caused the whole family to laugh.
“No, pero hablando en serio, bienvenido a la familia cariño.“ You smiled at your boyfriend’s family, glad that they had accepted you.
Richard: You knew that Richard’s parents were going to be a little more difficult to win over. They were very protective of Richard but also of their granddaughter, Aaliyah. They simply just wanted the best for their family, you couldn’t blame them for that but it also made you the most nervous you’ve ever been.
“Hey, everything is going to be okay. Aaliyah loves you so they have to love you.” He told you as you were walking into the restaurant where you would be meeting his parents for the first time.
“You say that as if it’s some sort of rule.” You laughed half heartedly. Richard noticed and rubbed your arm in an attempt to soothe you.
“You’ve got this. Aaliyah is a tough crowd. You’ve passed the hardest test.” You smiled at him and you followed the waitress to the table where you saw Richard’s parents.
“Hola, Señor y señora Camacho.” You gave them your best smile, and received hugs from each of them but only because it was customary.
“Mamá, Papá, ¿podemos hablar en inglés por esta noche, por favor?” You knew Richard was asking them to speak in their second language. You were dreading their reaction to this question.
“Why? Is she not able to speak Spanish, hijo? You know that’s not good for Aaliyah.” His mother scolded him which made you feel very awkward.
“Lo siento pero, I can speak Spanish, very well-” You were interrupted by Richard.
“She just doesn’t know Dominican Spanish.” You nodded your head at him and his parents nodded their heads also, becoming more understanding.
“So, Y/N, what are your intentions with our son?” Straight in with the deep stuff, There was no wasting time when it came to Richard’s parents.
“Honestly, I love your son so like you, I want the best for him. I give him all my love and support in everything that he does. If he needs a shoulder to cry on, I’ll be there, if he wants to rant, I’ll listen, if he wants to laugh, I’ll make a joke or a few. I’ll do and be whatever he needs because my intentions are pure, I assure you.” Richard smiled at your response and grabbed your hand under the table.
“Well, that sounds good to me. Hijo, does she make you and Aaliyah happy?” His father asked as he took a sip of his drink.
“The happiest.” Richard spoke, glancing at you afterwards.
“Then I guess it’s settled, isn’t it? Welcome to the Camacho family, cariño.” You looked to Richard in shock. It was that easy? Not that it was easy but you were expecting it to be more difficult.
“Te amo.” Richard whispered into your ear as he kissed your cheek just as the food arrived.
Christopher: You currently didn’t have any plans to meet Christopher’s family. Well, you didn’t but he did.
Tonight you were supposed to be heading to a charity event in your town. It was organised by your best friend and she had allowed you to bring Chris and the other boys but only Chris was able to attend.
You walked into the community hall, detaching yourself from Christopher to greet your best friend and congratulate her on how beautiful the décor was.
“Thank you Y/N. Who’s that with Chris?” She pointed behind you and when you saw who he was with, you felt your stomach drop and fill with nerves.
“Oh my gosh, those are his parents. I’m not ready for this. You have to hide me, any-” You were interrupted by a familiar hand on your shoulder, causing you to turn round.
“Chris.” You gave him a smile and watched as your best friend walked away, smirking at you. You knew at that moment that she had helped set this up and you would kill her later on.
“Amor, these are my parents.” You turned to face them and you gave them a bright smile.
“Hola, it’s lovely to meet you both. I’m Y/N.” You hit it off pretty well with his parents, laughing and joking with them all night whilst Christopher sat and admired the most important people in his life getting along.
He knew that you were perfect before but watching you get along with the people that meant the world to him made him realise that you were so much more than perfect, if that was even possible.
He watched as the conversation simply flowed between the three of you and how you were able to switch between English and Spanish when they needed it. He loved how you had already organised several lunch and yoga dates with his mother. He loved the way that you complimented his mother’s makeup and you had agreed to do her makeup for a friend’s birthday party when she had asked you.
He loved how you laughed about funny memories of Chris when he was a child with his father and how you even told them about your own funny memories of your boyfriend. He loved how his Dad already called you his ‘daughter’, meaning that they had fully accepted you into his family and he loved how you agreed to take his father to a football/soccer match to watch your favourite team.
After a while, his parents decided to leave and you gave them both a hug and said goodbye to them.
“You, you are in trouble. Why didn’t you tell me that they were coming?!” You hit his chest and he just laughed at you.
“Because I knew that you would be nervous. This made sure that you weren’t nervous.” He reasoned and you smiled at his sweet intentions.
“It went really well so thank you, te amo mucho.” He mumbled before pressing a soft kiss to your lips.
A/N: so, I'm sorry that Erick and Richard's are so short, I really struggled to make Erick's different and I didn't like making the Camacho's mean haha! Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and requests are currently OPEN x
