Hey Dragon Fans! Let’s do a round up of all the information we’ve gotten so far about The Dragon Prince! This is quite a lot of info, so I’ll be throwing the bulk of it under a cut. (There will be spoilers for episode 1 of the show below the cut.)
The Dragon Prince, developed by Wonderstorm Inc., animated by Bardel Entertainment, and distributed by Netflix will be releasing all the episodes of the first season on September 14, 2018.
The official summary is, “Two human princes forge an unlikely bond with the elven assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
You can watch the promotional trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7Bf7JLnlOU
Promotional taglines used by the official accounts have been “Destiny is a book you write yourself!” and “dragon big”.
Netflix currently has the show rated as TV-Y7 for Fantasy Violence. The animation is cell-shaded CG, much like what you see in Fire Emblem, Guilty Gear, or Avatar: The Lost Episodes.
The show will have an accompanying video game developed by Wonderstorm* with the story tellers for both show and game working closely together to ensure the stories being told are well integrated and complementary.
Tumblr media
Our lead characters for the Netflix series are Callum, the elder human prince, Ezran, the human crown prince, and Rayla, a Moonshadow Elven Assassin.
The universe The Dragon Prince takes place in is divided into two primary areas, Xadia, the magical lands in the East, and the five great human kingdoms in the West. Centuries ago, Thunder the King of Dragons guarded the border between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms.
In the TDP universe, there were originally six types of magic: moon, sun, stars, earth, ocean, and sky. Humans developed a seventh type of magic, Dark Magic. With Dark Magic you find a creature that has that magic as part of their essence, you consume it quickly, and it unleashes a great amount of magic quickly. Dark Magic became a shortcut to great, fast power, but led to corruption and was wielded at the expense of the varied, intelligent, and powerful magical creatures of Xadia. The dragons and the elves allied to try to put a stop to the humans’ use of Dark Magic, but the Dragon King Thunder was killed by humans using dark magic and Thunder’s only egg and heir, The Dragon Prince, was destroyed. Now the world stands on the edge of all out war...
The first episode is titled “Book 1: Moon, Episode 1: Echoes of Thunder” and was premiered at the SDCC 2018 panel. You can read IGN’s review of the episode here.
SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE BEGIN HERE
Ezran is scared of thunderstorms and likes to steal treats from the baker with his pet glow toad, Bait. Glow toads are described as “the Grumpy Cat of magical illusionary amphibians.”
Even though Callum is older he is not the crown prince because he is the stepson of the king. This means Callum and Ezran are half brothers. The condition and whereabouts of Callum and Ezran’s mother is reported to be a spoiler. The King is a black man, and it appears that Ezran may be biracial.
One of the royal guards Sorin/Soren/Zoren (spelling unknown) is tasked with training Callum in sword fighting. Callum is disinterested and prefers to draw, unless Soren’s sister, Claudia, is around. Callum appears to have a crush on Claudia, and Soren helps by going easy on him in sparring sessions in front of her. Claudia appears to be very studious and nearly runs into a tree while reading because she is too focused on her book. Claudia and Soren’s father is a highly placed lord and leader of the royal army/guard.
It looks like Callum will be learning to use magic over the course of the show. What type of magic he uses is currently unknown. Based on the trailer I think that may be Claudia also shown using magic. Regardless of her identity, I suspect what the dark haired female magic user in the trailer is using is the Dark Magic we’ve seen discussed.
The elves that Rayla is a member of are called Moonshadow Elves (white haired elves with dark horns) and they literally draw power from the moon. They are at thier strongest during the full moon. The bracelet Rayla wears was acquired during a ceremony swearing loyalty to the Dragon King’s cause/memory(?). Moonshadow Elves demonstrate at minimum some form of cloaking magic, but can still be detected by certain types of animals. Rayla has a Scottish accent.
Rayla is going to be something of a mysterious figure and strongly conflicted about her role in current events, “testing her sense of right and wrong.” She tries to tell herself that “an assassin does not decide right or wrong, only life and death.”*
When the Moonshadow Elves stage an attack on the castle, the King decides to send Callum and Ezran away for thier own safety. Meanwhile, Soren and Claudia are ordered by thier father to stop the assassins. Callum wants to help but is told he cannot because he is only 14 (and 3/4!) years old and he must be 15 to fight.
There was a black-haired guard in the first episode (the one attacked by Rayla) that had not been formally named, but when asked by the panel audience they named him Marcos.
END OF  SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE
During the Q&A session (I’ve discussed this with several people who were in the room now trying to get clarity) it sounds like the question of if there would be LGBT+ representation in the show was very narrowly sidestepped. They told the panel audience that any sort of answer would be a spoiler. It seems likely that there will be LGBT+ representation, but it has not been explicitly promised, and I urge folk to temper expectations with the knowledge that while it’s wrong to use the TV-Y7 rating as a reason to not show canonically LGBT+ characters, it may end up being outside the Wonderstorm team’s hands to try to get it on screen. I’m cautiously optimistic. We’ll have to wait and see.
The staff did say they are strongly dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse fantasy universe, with an especial focus on visible ethnic diversity. We can already see the beginning of that with the King and Ezran.
Being on Netflix permits the staff to do a darker take on the story than they might have been permitted on network television, and they’re excited to get to tell a complex and nuanced story that explores moral grays and the idea that there are both good and bad actors in every group and culture. That said, they want this series to be fun, light-hearted, and quirky too.
The SDCC panel gave away two goodies to anyone lucky enough to get into the panel, a large physical poster version of the concept art we first saw with the initial announcement and an enamel pin of Ezran’s pet glow toad, Bait. The backing for the enamel pin announced that Hot Topic will be carrying exclusive merchandise for The Dragon Prince beginning in September 2018.
(A big thank you to elventhespian, owldee, and kohisu for thier live blogs of the SDCC 2018 panel.)

in character info
Full name: Damien ‘Lucifer’ Thorn JR.
Birthday: January 1st, 2000
Sexuality, gender, pronouns: Demi-panromantic / homosexual // masculine-Nonbinary ( he / him )
Age and grade: 19 // Senior Appearance:  Damien Thorn sits at a rather normal height of a teenager at a good 5’7, though a bit short for his build he doesn’t seem to mind. He sits at a good 190 Pounds, and has a good head of curly black locks that sit untamed, and frame around a pair of large doesh ears that fold back into the dark coils of hair, and are decorated with a number of gothic piercings. Poking from the knots, and near the start of the ears, on his temples and folding in are a pair of small curling horns of jet black, with an almost iridescent gleam to them under certain light.
His outfit is very simplistic, resembling his personality almost to a tee. A boring black sweater that’s adorned via a few thin red stripes near the bottom, the sweater is loose around his wrists, and his neck. Each hand of his is adorned with black painted nails, sharp and almost like claws. He usually can be found wearing simple bands around his fingers, decorated with carvings, or even just plain. Besides that, Damien wears a rather bland pair of jeans, a belt of silver holding them fast to his waist, and red suspenders hanging off either side, crossing in the back to form an ‘X’, and stopping around his upper knee. Behind him, and peeking out from above the waistband of his pants is an almost cartoonish, spade tipped black tail, slender yet long, with the ability to skirt the ground. Mostly hidden from prying eyes, but it’s there.
The final stage of the rather bland gettup the raven adorns is the combat boots, black, with red and white patterned laces, to which his pants are tucked into, to avoid obstructing the view of such meticulously crafted shoes.
Personality: Damien is a very cynical, and straight forward individual, he doesn’t skirt around issues, and tells it how he sees it. Why these aren’t necessarily bad traits, but how Damien himself twists them, and wields them, comes off as such. Damien has much of a personality of a snake, a sly beast with a silver tongue and killer intelligence. With these abilities manipulation comes easy, and is a sport of fun for the satan spawn. Using it more as a game, toying with people’s trust, and sort of sanity for the enjoyment of himself.
Akin with these other traits, Damien is quite short tempered, and honestly nobody is safe from his wrath. Many conclude it a side effect of being spoiled, or even just for being the heir to the throne of hell, but nobody truthfully knows, Damien can get rather touchy, and short tempered when poked and prodded at for a short period of time, and isn’t hesitant when it comes to harming another teenager.
Under all the cold and rude displays, Damien is a rather understanding and chilled person, sleepy, clingy, and albeit a bit attention starved, Damien isn’t all that cold, but he holds himself well. Only letting the crude, and destructive persona fall around those he trusts, and finds worthy to see their ‘soon to be ruler’ in such a state weak and vulnerable.
History: Though he was raised in hell most of his life, Damien found that experience and routine boring, and mundane, being raised to be heir was something he never really fancied as a child. Even after the exposure to the youth of the human domain, he found no joy in the idea of torturing the souls who brought quite an amount of annoyance to his existence.
Through the number of times Kenny has graced himself in hell, Damien and he slowly started to bond, the prince of hell being told story upon story of life upon the overworld slowly brought out a childish interest deep inside his chest, and the raven decided to attempt to live among humans once more, After making up a rather cock-and-bull story to trick his father he was shipped up to the rural land of colorado, South Park.
Many new faces, and many old. Most who didn’t recognize the demonic child of so many years past ( thank god ) greeted him, and to Damien’s surprise, kindly.. Well, this would be a lot different than last time.
Sample paragraph: Music had an effect on the cold hearted beast that the raven considered himself to be. A hound at the gates, teeth bared as the morph paced, begging to be let in. One day they’d let their guards down, and the ravenous animal would take this as it’s time to strike. His hands slightly tighten around the device, nails attempting to dig into it for a purchase, though none came. No, instead this king, this wolf at the gates found himself staring at his phone with such intensity that he could have sworn he could burn holes through it with just his eyes alone.
None of these songs were worth his time, he found himself skipping one after another, tapping upon the screen with rising annoyance. This was getting him nothing but angry. What a waste this was, damien could be ruining someone’s day, or causing some sort of chaos that would last the week at least! But instead, he was following the gentle and soft orders of one blonde brit, instructing him to find music to help with a sort of rage that boiled down within his chest like primal urge. He grimaced at the memory, the gentle tone reminding and suggesting him on finding a better outlet for his rage, to destructive and harmful for those around the beast. The monster. A roll of his eyes followed suit as he skipped another song, hesitantly being forced to halt the skips, being given a message from the screen in a cheery, and taunting font ‘ only six skips an hour!’
That’s where this led Damien Thorn to be sprawled out on the floor, staring at his phone, past the hour listening to a type of genre he had never previously heard about. A calm tone of music that slowed his heart rate and breathing, lulling him into a sort of peace with heavy beats, and jazzy undertones, eyes focused upon the title printed in bold Japanese. Far from the app he had originally started on, he now found sanctuary on a site titled ‘Plaza’. Lofi Beats.. Vaporwave.. Nightcore. All music of the same genre, but different names decorating them. It brought peace to the usually enraged teenager, hands relaxed on his device for once instead of causing his knuckles to flush white with annoyance and rage.
  Headcanons:
Damien is bad at expressing affection. Watch this boy hit you and just be like ‘ u have a nice face’
He has sharp teeth he uses for tearing and biting..
He LOVES meat, this boy is a carnivore, and can be found eating things raw, don’t worry it doesn’t affect him.
Ok this boy is nocturnal as HELL. he is almost always sleeping in class, or just not at school, but if you see him at night, he has so much energy, either playing video games, texting people, or just walking around town. He’s the definition of ‘night owl’
Functions off coffee & cigarettes.
Damien has small horns, very tiny, and more in a nub stage, budding and slowly growing, By the time they are fully grown, they will be shaped in a form of a ram, curling around his doeish ears.
Due to having some powers as the heir to hell, damien uses them, but minorly, he mostly uses them to do dangerous / illegal stunts, aging himself up to get away with fighting, drinking, or other things he might not get away with at the age of 19.
Can see dead people / ghosts
Knows of Kenny’s numerous deaths.
Anything else: Eric Andre voice: Let me IN– LET ME INNNNNNNN!

Cloud and Aerith in the KH universe
The debate about "Cloud’s light” has been done a thousand times and I don’t really intend on rehashing old quotes that have been explored a thousand times already or giving my opinion about them.
Instead, I want to focus on the KH2.8 credits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order of appearance (starting from top left):
Snow White & Prince Charming (Snow White)
Aurora & Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty)
Cinderella &  Prince Charming (Cinderella)
Ariel & Prince Eric (The Little Mermaid)
Donald & Daisy (Disney original)
Hercules & Meg (Hercules)
Roxas & Namine (Kingdom Hearts)
Cloud & Aerith (Final Fantasy series)
Peter Pan & Wendy (Peter Pan)
Simba & Nala (The Lion King)
Belle & Beast (Beauty & the Beast)
Mulan & Li Shang (Mulan)
Esmeralda & Phoebus (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Aladdin & Jasmine (Aladdin)
Mickey & Minnie (Disney original)
Sora & Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
Those are the couples included in the romantic portion of the credits. The only two pairs missing are Jack & Sally (The Nightmare Before Christmas) and Tarzan & Jane (Tarzan), both which could not be included due to copyright laws. If we exclude those pairings, Square Enix still deliberately set up all 16 couples back-to-back, with Cloud and Aerith (the 8th couple shown) smack-dab in the middle of the montage. I can’t help but think that odd... Why are Cloud and Aerith the “middle” couple of the montage? Is there any significance to it?
To me, as much as I love clerith, I can’t help but feel like the placement of Cloud and Aerith’s moment is strange. It would have made much more sense to show Cloud and Aerith first, since Final Fantasy characters come secondary to Disney characters, and then all the Disney couples would follow, then finishing with RokuNami and Sokai—because those are the most important couples in the Kingdom Hearts universe. But instead, Nomura gave Cloud and Aerith the middle spot of the entire montage.  My personal opinion is that Nomura strategically placed Cloud and Aerith in the middle of the montage in order to avoid any confusion about why they’re in the romantic section of the credits as opposed to the “nakama” section. Had Nomura placed Cloud and Aerith first, fans could have argued that Cloud and Aerith were not included in the romantic section but rather a part of the “friendship” section of the credits.
But because Cloud and Aerith came after six beloved Disney couples and one Kingdom Hearts couple (RokuNami), it didn’t exactly leave any room to argue about what kind of message Square Enix was trying to convey to their fans, especially since eight more romantic pairings were shown immediately after (including Sokai).
Square Enix’s message was heard loud and clear as fans in the Sokai and RakuNami fandoms rejoiced at the confirmation of their ships... Perhaps Square Enix knew this would garner this type of reaction from shippers... perhaps, it was what they hoped for. If so, that just makes the inclusion of Cloud and Aerith all the more special.
But another important aspect about these credits is the effect it has on the “Cloud’s Light” debate.
CT fans argue that Tifa is Cloud’s light, but if she was... why isn’t she the one shown in the ending credits instead of a Cloud and Aerith moment? Square Enix could have just as easily shown the moment between Cloud and Tifa, especially since fans claim Tifa is Cloud’s “light”. Doesn’t really make sense to show a Cloud/Aerith moment when Tifa is supposedly Cloud’s “love” and “light” now does it?
But maybe Square Enix ultimately went with Cloud and Aerith because they’re the only Final Fantasy couple they could show. Since Tidus was around Sora’s age and stuck on Destiny Island, and Yuna was a pixie aiding Sora in Radiant Garden, showing a romantic scene between them seems almost impossible to do. And although Squall does appear in KH, Rinoa does not.
With all other Final Fantasy couples separated by strange circumstances, Cloud and Aerith are coincidentally the only two Final Fantasy characters that Square Enix could use as the representation for Final Fantasy couples. I can’t help but wonder if this was planned years ago, as a way to draw attention to the tragic lovers instead of the other popular romance stories from the Final Fantasy series.
Then again, maybe Square Enix didn’t show the Cloud and Tifa scene because it is completely optional and not every fan is obligated to see the scene. Or maybe they didn’t show Tifa because Tifa is an “ incorporeal” being said to not “really” exist in the realm in which Cloud and Aerith live in. That could explain why Tifa doesn’t even appear in the credits of KH2.8 at all, not even in the friendship section... Which is strange since even Zack appears in the credits, while Tifa is nowhere in sight.
Tumblr media
No matter the reason for Tifa’s absence, the facts remain the same. It’s rather strange that Tifa is supposedly Cloud’s “light” and “love” and yet she’s nowhere to be seen in such an important ending. The way I see it, if Square Enix intended to make Tifa Cloud’s light/love interest, then she would be seen with Cloud instead of Aerith.
The fact is, Square Enix and Nomura not only chose Cloud and Aerith to represent the love stories of the entire Final Fantasy series, but Square Enix chose a Cloud/Aerith moment instead of a Cloud/Tifa moment to b included in the romantic montage. That says a lot.

The foreign plan to meddle in the 2016 elections that Mueller’s report never mentioned – ThinkProgress
There was foreign plan to meddle in the 2016 elections that former special counsel Robert Mueller’s report never mentioned.
Now, with Mueller set to give public testimony before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees on Wednesday, Congress could demand answers.
The mysterious social media manipulation plan came together late in the afternoon on Aug. 3, 2016. George Nader and Joel Zamel got a phone call from Eric Prince asking them to join him at Trump Tower to meet then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
Zamel had been planning for this meeting. At the time, he owned a private security firm called Psy-Group that employed several former Israeli intelligence officers. That spring, Zamel had pitched the Trump campaign on a plan to use fake online personas and “covert sources” to target delegates at the 2016 Republican National Convention, and manipulate voters in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, along with digging up dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her associates.
Zamel revived that pitch ahead of his August 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr., according to The New York Times. Nader, a longtime emissary for the crown princes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, pledged their support.
“[W]e are working hard for your father,” Prince said, according to The Times.
If Zamel’s plan sounds familiar, it may be because it is similar to what former special counsel Robert Mueller indicted Russia’s Internet Research Agency for in February 2018.
Nader, who is now facing charges of child sex trafficking in Virginia, was a key witness for Mueller. But Zamel’s social media manipulation plans were mysteriously absent from the redacted, publicly available version of the special counsel’s final report, released in April. Whereas Nader appears in the redacted report around 119 times, Zamel and Psy-Group are totally absent.
That’s despite reports that Mueller and his team interviewed Zamel and other former Psy-Group employees and even seized the now-defunct company’s computers in Israel.
Mueller’s congressional testimony on Wednesday could provide an opportunity for answers about whether the Trump campaign ever put Zamel’s plans into effect. It could also shed light on a series of other meetings Nader and Zamel had with Trump campaign officials in the months before and after the 2016 election — including encounters with a controversial Saudi general at Trump Tower in 2018 over fomenting regime change in Iran.
Getting those answers, however, could be an uphill battle. At a surprise press conference at the Justice Department in May, Mueller said any public testimony he gave “would not go beyond our report.”
“We chose those words carefully and the work speaks for itself,” Mueller said at the time. “And the report is my testimony.”
The Justice Department has told Mueller to stick to his word on that. Associate Deputy Attorney General Bradley Weinsheimer wrote Mueller a letter this week warning that the former special counsel’s testimony “must remain within the boundaries of your public report.” Weinsheimer reportedly said that some of the special counsel’s investigative findings are covered by executive privilege and law-enforcement privilege that exempt them from disclosure to Congress.
House Democrats may also defer questions about Psy-Group to their colleagues in the Senate, where a bipartisan Intelligence Committee investigation asked Zamel and Psy-Group founder Royi Burstein for testimony earlier this month, according to The Daily Beast.
It’s not clear whether the Trump campaign ever hired Zamel’s company to carry out the plan. If it did, that could have run afoul of laws barring foreign participation in U.S. elections.
“Neither Joel Zamel, nor any of his related entities, had any involvement whatsoever in the U.S. election campaign,” Zamel’s lawyer, Marc Mukasey, told The Times in May 2018. Zamel reiterated that denial in an interview with the Daily Caller earlier this month.
“They pitched Mr. Trump Jr. on a social media platform or marketing strategy,” Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Donald Trump Jr., told the Times last year. “He was not interested and that was the end of it.”
Still, Nader made a mysterious $2 million payment to Zamel after the election, according to the Times, which reported that the two men “gave differing accounts” of the reason for the payment.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sent a letter to Facebook, Google, Reddit, and Twitter last October demanding answers about how Zamel and his companies used their platforms.
“The covert political influence proposed by Psy-Group warrants the same level of scrutiny and disclosure as those carried out by Russian actors,” Blumenthal wrote.
Blumenthal’s office has not responded to multiple phone calls and voicemail messages since January requesting comment on what responses it received from the companies.
A Facebook spokesperson told ThinkProgress earlier this year that the company is “continually reviewing activity on our platform for potential violations of our policies.”
“[A]t any given time, we have a number of investigations underway,” the spokesperson added.
A source with knowledge of the matter at Twitter interviewed around the same time said the company carried out an investigation but did not “identify anything that appeared to be widespread activity in violation of our policies.”
Reddit and Google declined to comment.

Is there anything sturdier and more resilient than a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta?  There are occasional professional productions of Pirates of Penzance or HMS Pinafore at opera houses and regional theaters, but I’d bet that it’s local amateur companies that have kept the operettas alive for 130 years and counting.
Why so evergreen? G&S shows offer plentiful opportunities for amateur ensembles to sing complex and lovely music, and the lead roles give the best singers in the community a chance to shine, while leaving room for the character actor with limited singing range or two left feet.  Every G&S production I’ve seen (or performed in, with the late lamented Light Opera Company of Salisbury, CT) has a large chorus of simpering maids played by women from their teens through their 80s, and assorted pirates, policeman or “gentlemen of Japan” played by men who may struggle to hit the high notes of their younger days, or remember which order their feet should grapevine, but are as courtly or dastardly as the moment requires. The simple plots, the witty lyrics, the tradition of updating them with current references, and above all the gorgeous music, so much fun to sing and to listen to, has kept the G&S repertory going in communities around the world, with the traditions passed on like folk tales.
The Gondoliers is less well known than the “big three” of Pirates, Pinafore and Mikado, but with its gorgeous score and perfectly silly plot, it deserves to be seen, and the Valley Light Opera is currently mounting a very entertaining production at the Academy of Music in Northampton. With a cast of thousands (not really, but it’s big) and a full orchestra, this community production fills the stage with color.
The plot concerns two penniless but handsome young brothers, gondoliers Marco and Giuseppe. They decide to choose brides from among the assembled village ladies, who fan themselves and faint at the prospect. It turns out that one of them is the heir to the throne in Barataria, but since nobody knows which, they must leave their brides behind and assume the duties of the monarchy together. They are Republicans, however, of the 19th century sort, which means they don’t believe in hierarchies: they help out with the menial duties of the kingdom while treating the Lord High Footman and Lord High Drummer Boy with outsized respect.
Not much else happens until the identity of the true king is revealed: various amusing characters enter, sing a song to explain who they are, and leave again.
Among those are the down-on-their-luck Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, who support themselves by endorsing dubious products, and their daughter Casilda, who was married at birth to the now-incognito prince.  She, however, is secretly in love with Luiz, the one-man ‘suite’ serving her family.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As the Duke, Jonathan Klate stands out for his authoritative voice and comic timing.  Kathy Blaisdell is a classic G&S mezzo-soprano, carrying off her songs with verve. Elaine Crane as Casilda has a sweet soprano and is very believable as she puzzles over her fate.  Brad Amidon, as Luiz, isn’t the strongest singer but is a terrific comic actor, and plays an 11th-hour twist to the hilt.
The strongest voices on the stage belong to the four young lovers: George Eisenhauer and Christopher Marcus play Marco and Giuseppe as a goofy Mutt-and-Jeff pair.  As Gianetta, Libby Maxey has a glorious operatic voice, though her words are mostly incomprehensible. Luckily there are supertitles projected in the theater (which synced up with what was on stage about 50% of the time.)  Kimaya Diggs was a warm and charming Tessa.
The orchestra, ably led by conductor Aldo Fabrizi, gave some extra bad-guy music to Don Alhambra,  the Grand Inquisitor who stole away the young prince to begin with, and is played with understated menace by Matthew Roehrig.
As with any G&S production, the script was updated with plentiful and very amusing current references, from Bernie bros to pussy hats, Kardashians and #MeToo, to rhyming Ivanka and Sri Lanka, with a little Macarena thrown in. I was waiting for a tie-in with the two brother gondoliers to Don Jr and Eric but sadly it never came.  As someone who always slightly chafed at playing the giggling girl year after year, I particularly appreciated when Tessa’s line, “those two poor Monarchs haven’t got any one to mend their stockings or sew on their buttons or patch their clothes” was interrupted by a chorister adding “or build their buildings or run for office!”  Happily, the script doctors didn’t overload the production with too many such interludes.
The minor roles and ensemble are filled with Pioneer Valley residents, including a paleontologist, a pastor, a dentist, a massage therapist, a climate activist, several teachers and a passel of delightful middle-schoolers who cartwheel, ride mini-gondolas mounted on scooters, and add even more life to the village scenes.  The ensemble as a whole particularly shone on the opening number, List and Learn, and the lively dance interlude, the Cachucha.
The orchestra, almost without exception, played beautifully, though occasionally were much louder than the ensemble, at least where I was sitting near the front. Friends in the middle of the house reported they had no trouble hearing the singers over the instruments.
Seeing this production reminded me that my grandfather, whom I never met, was said to have played Ko-Ko in a community production of the Mikado decades before I was born. I did some strategic Googling and sure enough, found a notice about the production, mentioning him, in the Detroit Free Press from 1935.   May Gilbert & Sullivan be passed down for another 130 years, at least!
