(minor tw for some discussion of emotional abuse. As well as some spoilers for the bad ending)

So was still thinking about my other post. Decided to look up the tapes again and...

William rambling to himself about doing anything to be Henry’s son is *before* he learns about David. That is in the tape directly after the night-rambling one. I kind of got the impression that by “made the mistake of telling him about my deceased son“, it was a slip of the tongue, or William overheard Henry talking to someone, or something. Not that he actually made it a topic of conversation.

Furthermore...

“And, now William has run wild with the idea of replacing him, and for me to become the father that he never had.”

“Ran wild” paints a picture of excitement— fever, delirium, frenzy — to me. My reading is that William clung to David’s identity so much since he saw it as his grand opportunity to finally win Henry over.

Anyway, combined with my other posts + headcanons, my personal “timeline” I guess of William and Henry M’s relationship is this:

Henry uses William’s admiration of him as an excuse for ez gg murder framing.

When William Comes Back™ after being murdered, he switches gears and sees William as a free accomplice/servant/assistant as well as a test subject because immortal.

However, that means having to spend time with William and live with him. Henry pushes “we are a family” to keep William dependent on him, and keep him submissive and obedient.

William, desperate for a family, is upset that Henry hasn’t fully committed to being his adoptive father. Starts bugging him about that. When Henry gives him the cold shoulder, he internalises it. He drives himself mad trying to figure out what’s wrong with him that Henry won’t actually be his family, and how he can fix it.

William learns about David, assumes maybe the problem is a barrier from mourning him. So he comes up with the idea of “well if he won’t adopt me as William because he misses David, then I’ll just be David. Problem solved!”

That’s the final straw for Henry. He declares William is too messed up and useless, and decides to abandon him. No accomplice/servant/assistant is better than having William as one.

William snaps and commits full time to murder and destroying Freddy’s for “ruining Henry” as an outlet. A last ditch attempt at making him proud and earning his love — even when Henry is gone. He is too dependent on him, too crushed and too hurt to function otherwise.

Furthermore, I think that is why he acts the way he does in the bad ending. “I’m not happy,” “I ruined the last good thing in my life. I always do.” He finally accepts that he will never have Henry’s love, and that he is left with nothing but unresolved trauma. He is broken.

Okay headcanon time.............

So I get the impression that, for better or worse, Henry M eased William into killing. Personally I imagine he made William lure kids back, but then actually killed them himself.

Especially since, that is how you can play out the evil route (which loves to draw parallels between Henry M and William) if you so wish.

Also in my opinion, the conversation in the WILL_HNRY_01 tape seems to imply it.

Of course, this wouldn't last. He'd make William do it himself eventually, which would lead into what his character is in the first and second games.

Portrayal

I got a question about this on my Vanny blog which I enjoyed answering. And then the answer to an ask I sent earlier also kinda prompted it.

So yeah, the vibes for how I write Dave -- here we gooo!

I write him on a Spectrum from how he is in Dayshift 2 to Dayshift 3-Flipside. He still has the deep obsession with Henry Miller, which influences a lot of the choices he makes and his actions. He's a killer because he feels he *has* to be for the man, even though he *doesn't want* to be. Dave's also in too deep and can't be talked out of it so easily. Not that it's impossible, just that he has spent literal decades devoted to his weird cause for Henry M.

Also I write him differently depending on era - the further back in the past, the more chill he is. Same is said for the future: he's angrier and more frustrated as time goes on.

During the times of Fredbear's Family Diner, he's rather sweet... while conversely, I apologise for those with SB verses, because in the 2030's he's so cranky oh gawd.

Also he gets attached to Jack Kennedy and Henry Emily reaaaal quick so... expect that when RPing with him if those dudes are your muses lmao.

This is of course the default setting and subject to change based on character development, interactions, and verses as well as just OOC over-time stuff.

Since it’s canon that Dave’s taste in memes are weird and people don’t get, you better believe I’m projecting because I am the exact same way.

One of my friends makes fun of me all the time because they don’t understand it. They try sending me stuff like “idfk man I thought you might like it”. So Jack having a similar reaction to the meme Dave sent him is hashtag relatable.

I know I keep rambling tonight oops, but sugary sweet n fluffy Dav.esport headcanon be upon ye.

Diner!William lowkey having a bit of a crush on the nightguard but never really getting a chance to interact with him due to their opposing work schedules and probably Henry tbh bark bark grr bark.

So the reason he is drawn to Jack is because on some subconscious level, he kinda-sorta recognises him as his crush from long ago.

Some notes on how my portrayal is different from canon William A.fton:

- American — he’s canonically from New York.

- Grew up in foster care without a solid legal family.

- History of homelessness.

- Young and immortal; frozen at the age of 24.

- Man named Henry Mi.ller (not Henry E.mi.ly nor related to him in any way!) took him on as an apprentice. William clung to him, and saw him as a father figure.

- Henry abused William physically and emotionally.

- This did give William a chance to discover and work on his passion for robotics at least.

- William, extremely mentally unwell and desperate for Henry’s affection, decides to take on the name of his deceased son, David Mi.ller.

- Never been married, no kids.

- Kinda vaguely knows about soul juice shenanigans but that was evil AU Henry’s thing. Henry coerced William into helping him abduct and murder kids.

- Sp.ringt.rap is a thing in source but only as a deliberate murder ploy. Otherwise, the same as F/NAF-canon: 3 decades, horror attraction, etc.

Headcanon Time ! || Always Accepting!

Fanon that I love — Trans Dave is canon and I get credit for my gender card when I see fanfics or fanart of him wahoo.

Fanon that I Despise — “Despise” is harsh but I still don’t like him with long hair in a ponytail bc of F.NAF Fan.dom Vet.eran reasons. Pav.lovian response lol.

Short hair or at least different hair William art also makes me go wahoo (esp because ponytail is suuucchhh a popular headcanon, so different art is rare)

Honestly, I like him most with Michael-ish hair:

Top 3 Favourite Headcanons —  1) High intelligence, low wisdom! Honestly I see this as just canon for any and all versions of William Af.ton lol. Legit just this post is canon to me. 2) I’ve kinda shared... but bc DS.AF 3 Dave/Diner Era William my beloved.... I like headcanoning that he is reluctant about killing but feels he has to. Claiming he feels no remorse and joking about being evil is how he copes with it.

Curse .

A short summary of William's curse so you know what to expect with him (Also please don't reblog.)

The curse began in 1973 when he died to a springlock failure... except not really. He made a miraculous recovery! However, ever since then, he stopped aging entirely. He didn't notice right away, obviously, but when it's now the 90s and you still look and feel the same...

Nothing can fully kill him. He always comes back. He is, however, only immortal and not invincible. He still feels physical pain, and may pass out from it. Or worse, horrific as it may be, he will stay completely conscious. But regardless, William will recover and in the case of the former, wake up with throbbing pain but otherwise stable.

He is tied to Freddy's. While he can, of course, physically leave the location(s) as he pleases, he will always return whether he wants to or not. A cruel trick of fate, something will always occur in his life where he either has to, or is forced to work at/stay at/linger around a location.

He has been convinced that if Freddy's would just die, he will be freed. He doesn't want to murder but feels he has to as it is the quickest and most effective way to end the chain. William usually throws in other crimes such as theft, arson, or scandal for good measure.

He has been at this for years and will not stop.

I feel like this might be canon tbh but since William was 24 and had never had a job before, he is just trying his best with the “co-owner of the diner” thing.

Henry of course does everything, and William sometimes contributes (generally only by Henry’s request/order). But yeah sure, they are both equal in being super serious businessmen. /s

Sad thing being the title was probably just to make him feel special, important, and essential to Henry’s life. Another thing to manipulate him. (Also probably canon tbh)

My favourite part about my “Flipside/Reasonable Dave is the real true person he was before Henry” headcanon/theory is that it also means he was always a weirdo and Henry had nothing to do with that.

Dumb jokes? Pride in the Canyon Foxy Disaster? Literally crying over missing out on a slumber party? Tackling robots? That’s all him, not because of The Thing That Happens In The Tapes(tm).

Some Random Headcanons

The golden rabbit costume is NOT Spring Bonnie. William is all too aware of this, and very angry they replaced his character with a cheap alternative. He simply calls it “the rabbit”. He doesn’t know or care what the character’s name is.

He to l e r a t es OG Bonnie, but has a deep hatred for Toy Bon, Rockstar, or Glamrock. They rUiNeD HiS cHaRaCtEr!!!!!! He carries similar salt towards Freddy, but not nearly as deep.

He knows Chica is a chicken and not a duck (he used to not know, but easily solved when he was first corrected). William insists otherwise to argue with people because he finds it funny.

He enjoys classic literature. Where do you think he got ‘Old Sport’ from?

Due to the lack of normalcy in his life, William seeks and clings to the fantastical or dramatic. Big reason why he doesn’t get why doing things like trying to replace someone’s deceased son is creepy and not endearing. Trips to Vegas because that's what they do in the movies! That'll make him happy.

He loves rarely, but easily and deeply. Most people are white noise to him, but those he does get attached to are everything. The "easily" comes in to play in that it's generally anyone who actually tries to get to know him.

Contrary to popular belief, kebabs aren’t his absolute favourite food. He just likes the versatility (and the potential for stabbing) part of them.

His actual favourite food is, ironically enough, pizza. GOOD pizza though, not cheap Freddy’s pizza. That’s the thing that gets people.

(murder related headcanon) He's too convinced he has to kill children, but does try to make it as painless as possible, and try and go after targets he think would be "more understandable".

super mega important lore about Dave’s badge + name tag

The “badge” is really just a fancy name tag. At one of the locations he worked at, management got shiny golden cheap plastic badges to award to “good employees”. A literal badge of honour. Of course Dave was not even close to being a contender, but that was no concern when managment kept the plastic-wrapped badges stored in an office. He wears it out of irony. It says “DAVE!” on it - yes the exclamation point is included.

In his Security B.reach verse, his name tag just said “Dave” but he added the “M.” at the end in sharpie to “make sure he’s separate from any other less fun Daves working here.”

Springlock scars because I think they’re cool and he should have them.

Even if it wasn’t official legally or anything, he absolutely sees Henry as his adopted father. Literally. He‘s just too afraid to take the final step and call him “father”.

Had bad parentification growing up. He acts silly now and clings to Fredbear’s to try and reclaim his childhood.

The first time he Came Back™? A miracle he wasn’t going to question. The second? He begins to suspect something. The third time? Okay, he accepts he’s immortal. But by the fourth time, he’s tired and really just wants to stay dead.

Figured out a super secret technique to prevent springlocks from going off. No, he won’t share what it is.

Uses jokes and humour to cope with e v e r y t h in g

The more Freddy’s expands and updates, the more he hates it and is lowkey filled with rage for “replacing Henry’s vision”. He hates the Toys and anything more modern. Would probably try to maul a Glamrock on sight.

Doesn’t eat or sleep well because why should he?

Used to not swear so much but started as an act of rebellion.

He does know murder is bad and wrong, would prefer not to. But he sincerely believes it’s a necessary evil for the greater good. Thinks this excuses his actions. He’s too far gone to be swayed from this.

Lots of bandages and scars. Cut knuckles… shadows under eyes…. horrible looking bastard.

Brilliant But Lazy/Cursed: he’s very skilled with robotics but never has and never will do anything with it that isn’t sabotage for personal gain.

Has been the same age for, at the least, one decade. In some ways, he’s more mature but in others, he’s still stuck mentally at his physical age. Just another quirk of immortality.

“Old Sport” and “Sportsy” is reserved for Jack K only.

Hates being called “David”. Doesn’t like being called “William” by people he doesn’t consider to be family.

And speaking of, he is very loyal and protective of those he considers a part of his family.

Conversely, he does not take rejection or abandonment well at all. Best case scenario, he’s a cold, aloof jerk to you, worst case…. suffering time.

Wiki says this and I’m keeping it: he doesn’t know his birthday and decided it’s Halloween.

Once again, on my shit about how D.SAF!William would treat the Af.ton kids right.

C.C? He himself is a sensitive cry baby. He gets it. Would never force him to do anything, would hope he comes around, and would try to gently help him overcome his fears since the diner is so important and precious to William. He wants it to be a safe and fun place for his kids.

Michael? William himself is edgy af and was a punk growing up. He gets it. He gets his anger. Though if he were there from the beginning, maybe Michael wouldn’t even turn out that way. Even if, William understands. He shows him how to throw a punch without bloodying his knuckles. Shows him how to use a knife if he needs to run. Will make sure it never comes to that.

Elizabeth? He’s a William Af.ton, she’s an Elizabeth Af.ton. I don’t need to elaborate.
