"A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body"
Started Soul Eater yesterday to have something seasonal and I'm loving it so far; Maka's a great protaganist and the presentation of the whole show has been so stylish.
Felt motivated to quickly model out Soul himself, a prop measuring 7 and a half feet long! (My longest prop, but definitely not my biggest since he's so thin and simple.
Maka reference from the anime's concept art.

You have the most based takes on the Soul Eater series ever dude. The catharsis I felt when someone described exactly why I was irked with the ending, Maka's characterization later down the line, and several other plot points was amazing.
Ever since you mentioned how compelling the theme of bravery and fear is in the anime ending I've been thinking about it nonstop. I feel like bravery could also tie in with Maka's characterization in the manga with Soul and Spirit, in which she gains the courage to put trust in them (Soul in not abandoning her no matter what and Spirit in wielding him as a weapon confidently despite her grievances with him). Additionally, I feel it would've been an amazing payoff if she also INSPIRES courage to others, especially Crona.
Black*Star wanted to transcend the gods, so what bars Crona from having the courage to want a better life and free themself in the manga ending? Of course, they will face consequences, but that shouldn't stop them from wanting to be happy.
Going from your point in your previous post of how the climax of the story doesn't hinge on Soul much: Perhaps by Maka inspiring courage in Soul with his issues, he will in turn help her in inspiring courage in Crona to fight back. Hell, why not get the others to join in? While kinda corny, it ties into how friendship and camaraderie can help get someone out of a dark place (I'm kinda imagining it like the Homulily fight in Madoka Magica rebellion).
Whilst I'm here, could I ask for your thoughts on Maka's mom? Personally, I think she was very underutilized as a character but I'm curious as to your thoughts on her.
Also, do you think the phrase "A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body" that's constantly repeated in the anime ties into any major revelations? I think it would've been a perfect callback for the anime but I don't recall having an "aha!" moment about it.
Anyways, sorry for rambling a lot and for taking up your inbox, but I was very inspired by your analysis hehe. Have a great day!
Having characters who never appear and yet define other characters is a very tricky business, and frankly i think Maka's mom is not handled well in the manga, but the anime staff gave it a shot of making something worthwhile out of her, and the similiarities and contrast between her and maka. It wasnt perfect, but at least it's something.
In regards to Maka's mom, i think the best course with her would be to confront the fact she'a probably not coming back head on sometime after the sand pit with crona, maybe have her and crona have a chat between doors, and the topic come up, and go from there.
Im actually going to have a post sorta going over this later, but the gist of it is that the postcard and the meaning behind it(that for all their differences and the fact maka does not understand her) Maka still loved her mom, and was able to draw strength from it, and their connection in spite of everything.
This moment could have been so much more impactful though, if you inserted Maka having some harsh truth realization about her mom... And then still have her send that card, and so have Maka's agonising over what it means be much more impactful and full of drama, and the realisation of the fact that even if she is never gonna see her again(and that maka sorta resents her for it), she still loves her mom. Having her accept the fact that she does not understand the message, and her mom's thoughts with it, but that in the end, it didnt matter, because what matters, was what maka took away from it.
That would have made it being framed so importantly in the ending credits worth it, and subsequently have Maka's mom be a much better character by fully exploring the broken aftermath of her and spirits divorce.
I actually think the motto is bunk, and thematically speaking, its this kind of thinking that created asura. "A sound soul resides in a sound mind in a sound body" is a motto that demands perfection, and if there is something Soul eater makes clear, its that perfection is mot aomething to strive for.
Chasing excelence in spite of flaws that often cannot be overcome is at the core of soul eater's themes. Maka, Soul, Liz, Patty, black star , are certainly not people who fit all these 3 catagories all at once.
In fact both of Maka's quotes to Asura at the end is about the opposite. The world is not perfect, and thats okay... So long as we have courage, we'll live in it despite all our flaws anyeay.
It does absolutely seem like something Shinigami-Sama would teach at his school though, cause this is asbolutely something that the personification of order would have as a motto.

Shinra and his family suddenly forming “Soul Resonance” is also annoying.
And no, no amount of “The Moon from Soul Eater is here!” will ever act as sufficient setup.
I’m not saying that “The Moon is now here” isn’t foreshadowing--I’m talking about setup: how does one lead to the other? How does Shinra’s set of powers lead to Soul Resonance? How does Shinra unlock Soul Resonance? How come Soul Resonance in Soul Eater never took the form of non-weapons empowering each other? Even with Chain Resonance, it was each meister empowering another meister so they could more effectively use their demon weapon, not to just give a power up to that one meister sans weapon.
The most that Fire Force gave us for better understanding of Soul Resonance is what Soul Eater’s final arc already confirmed: familial bonds allow for easier use of Soul Resonance, whether Shinra and his mother and brother, or Maka with her father.
(But that is a whole other set of problems, so forgive this parenthetical tirade: this comes across more as defining familial bonds through genetics as more relevant than chosen familial bonds. I understand how it is just as likely that Shinra and Maka pulled off Soul Resonance so well not because of genetics but because of actual respect and love for their family--and, bonus, that would’ve gone a long way to helping define Maka’s strained relationship with her dad. But to do so, you would need another example, that being a Soul Resonance between a character and their adoptive family--Benimaru and his village director, Black Star and Sid, and so on. That is not what we got in this story, and it is all the more infuriating when situating all of these examples within how Soul Eater ended, with Crona yearning for maternal love--that can only be represented through the Madness of Breasts--thereby again situating all of this as instinctive forms of familial love as opposed to choosing your own family. Okay, end of tirade, back to the topic of Soul Resonance making no sense in Fire Force.)
How did fire power turn into soul power? It just does--we don’t get a satisfactory explanation. How does your physical power in the pre-Soul Eater world communicate into soul power in the post-Fire Force world, e.g. how Akitaru is physically strong so that means he later gets proportionally more soul power than physically weaker characters? This sounds like it should correspond well with what Soul Eater already told us: “A sound soul dwells inside a sound mind and a sound body.” But the problem is that we also saw that willpower within Soul Eater could make up for seeming physical weaknesses and lack of knowledge: Maka was not as physically powerful as Black Star but was able to perform feats he could not thanks to her stubbornness and courage, while Black Star may not be as knowledgeable or smart as Maka and yet was able to use his abilities in ways she may not have anticipated and with far more physical force. This is why having Akitaru getting so physically powerful is so boring: “He was physically strong before, so now he’s even stronger now!” It’s why Tamaki and Juggernaut just out on a date and seemingly no longer helping protect the world is insulting to their character progression: after the shit the two of them have gone through, the spiritual weight put onto them by societal pressures and their own fears and self-doubt, that neither one of them demonstrated incredible soul power as well is disappointing and seemingly contradicting the message of Soul Eater, even if not technically going outside of the “sound soul, mind, body” message.

"A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body".
Sooo,,, I don’t actually have anything to say about this. Like honestly, I don’t even know why I drew it haha!
Maka and Soul popped up in my feed again and I just started drawing it.💀
Literally no thoughts, just them. <3
I think it turned out kinda cool tho, all things considered. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(If I had given this au more thought I honestly would put Nico as Death the kid so that Bianca and Hazel could be the Thomson sisters. ᵉʰᵉʰᵉ(*/∇\⭒)
And I think Annabeth and Percy would make a good Maka and Soul duo, alas I did not think about it haha )

Soma Week Day 2: Flowers
@soulxmakaweek
Title: So Much More
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24007177
Summary: He could still feel her hands around his neck. Could almost see them, moving efficiently in perfect patterns, like they did everything, her eyes focused.
Soul refused to open his eyes, even as the morning sun peeked through the blinds. His body felt heavy, his soul weighed down by some invisible force. Souls… he buried the memories threatening to resurface. The constant ringing of phones forced his eyes open. He had found it impossible to go back to their apartment after that day. The thought of walking around the now empty space made his soul ache. He had been staying at Blackstar’s place for weeks, his body protesting to any of his, or his friend’s attempts to get him anywhere past the bathroom. But today was different. It was his last chance to say goodbye.
“Hey, Soul? Tsubaki and I are out for some coffee. Should we pick you up in an hour?” his friend’s voice rung through the other line, more quiet than he had ever heard it.
“All right.” He voiced his first words in weeks before ending the call. He glanced at the suit laying beside him before dragging his feet to the bathroom for a quick shower, adjusting the temperature of the water to ice-cold in hopes of feeling something other than emptiness. It did nothing to fill the void she left behind. He threw on the suit and combed his hair, his body on auto pilot before picking up the tie.
“It’s all crooked… Here, let me do it.”
“Why’s a piece of cloth around my neck so important anyways?”
“It’s symbolic. Besides, it looks nice. See?”
He could still feel her hands around his neck. Could almost see them, moving efficiently in perfect patterns, like they did everything, her eyes focused. Her eyes… He shook his head and walked away from the mirror. When the front door opened to reveal Blackstar, gesturing for him to follow him outside, he only nodded.
Soul barely registered the car ride to cemetery or his friend’s encouraging words, his mind already too far gone in a sea of despair. He imagined it was a similar to drowning. He didn’t fight the current, allowing it to consume him in hopes of being beside her once again.
When they arrived, there was already a crowd of people waiting for the ceremony to begin. He saw people shaking his hand, their lips forming comforting words, but he felt nothing. Didn’t react to anything. His stared straight ahead, lost somewhere far away. The thing that woke him up from his slumber was a fist landing in his face.
“You… Why didn’t you protect her…” he looked up to find Spirit looking down on him, his gaze unfocused and angry, protecting the layers of pain underneath. Soul didn’t make any move to pull away, to escape from the man’s grip. Punch me… hit me… I deserve it. It didn’t matter to him. Nothing mattered anymore. When the second punch landed he briefly noticed people pulling him away.
“It’s not his fault.”
“Please calm down sir.”
“Don’t make a scene.”
He moved away from the sea of people gathered to pull the man away, blocking out the noise.
He walked behind the group during the recital, avoiding provoking Spirit any more. He didn’t want to ruin anyone’s last goodbyes. She deserved better. So much better…
He was the last one to look at her before they closed the casket. No matter how much it hurt him, he refused to miss his last chance at seeing her face, trying to engrave every feature is his mind, knowing he would never see them again. Memories flooded his brain the moment he laid eyes on her soulless body.
“A sound soul dwells within a sound mind and a sound body.”
“I’ll take your Soul.”
“People need fear to survive. We experience it so we can grow stronger.”
Then there was blood. And then there was coughing, whispering, then nothing.
“…”
He felt a hand on his shoulder. Tsubaki was now standing next to him, trying to get through to him, as gently as possible. It’s time to say goodbye.
“Goodbye Maka. My super-stupid and super cool partner.” he had promised himself he would see her off with a smile. She deserved it. She deserved the world… he tried his best, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He walked down the aisle, not daring to look back. He sped up when he heard the lid close.
He took the flowers from Blackstar’s hand before moving to stand before her headstone. He opened his palm, letting them drop, along with a piece of himself.
He stood there as people slowly walked away.
“Hey, do you maybe want to go somewhere else? They’re holding a dinner in her memory…” he couldn’t bring himself to reply.
“Just… Call me when you’re ready.” Blackstar patted him once on the shoulder before walking away, leaving him alone. Everything was quiet, except the soft sound of the wind meeting with the branches.
He felt the emptiness crawl up his body, sink it’s fangs into his skin, scars he knew would never fade.
Maka Albarn
Age 20
Loved daughter and Accomplished Meister.
He reread the words, over and over until they finally sunk in. She was so much more than that… So much more… Tears streamed down his face, watering the still fresh soil. Week’s worth of pain and memories he had locked away burst open as he broke apart in front of her.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry I wasn’t there for you. It should’ve been me not you.” He yelled the words until his throat hurt, the awareness of the fact that she would never hear them only making him cry harder.
It was dusk by the time all his strength left him. His body dropped, his lungs were on fire, his eyes were stinging and his head hurt from the stimulation. He couldn’t bring himself to walk away. So he lay there, motionless, hoping the ground would eat him and he could be with her again.
“I can’t… I promised you I’d be strong… I failed you… again…” his voice was no more than a whisper as her last words flashed through his mind.
“Please… Don’t let me break you, Soul… You’ll get through this… I know you will. “
“I promise.”
He hadn’t cried that day. He refused to see her off in tears. He had flashed her his biggest smile and held her close until he felt her life wash away into nothing. Now the mask had fallen away and he had no way to cope with her loss. When he closed his eyes she was looking up at him with her large eyes, full of life, and when he opened them she wasn’t there.
“Maka... please… Don’t leave me alone… I don’t want to be alone. “His eyes were dry, so he wept, shredding away every last bit of armor he had left, completely bare and alone in a world he felt was working against him. A strong gust of wind blew, causing a storm of spring flowers to surround him, their aroma filling the empty space. He slowly lifted himself up and observed the scene. He couldn’t explain it, but in that moment he felt her presence.
“Maka…” something pulled at the restrains he had locked himself in after her death and his heart filled with something else, easing his pain, slightly.
“I’ll make it through this… For you, Maka… “His lips curved a little. Even in death… You give me hope… Thank you.
