   Rei soothed through her baby’s hair, quietly carding her fingers through his mismatched locks to let him know she was here, right here in his arms and never leaving so long as he wanted her there. His arms too were like a fort around her fragile frame, a barrier daring any man to ever hurt her again. His strength undeniable even though his touch was like a warm wave of softness. Ever that balancing act. That perfect mirror of precise control. “I’m always here, Shoto, darling. Always here for you.” Rei whispered into his shoulder, always happy to remind him, she was just a bus away, a quick car to her side. He was never alone. Not really. Her calming touch always lingering on his back, pushing him to be the very best. A good Hero. A good man.

‘‘You’ve gotten even taller since your last visit.” Rei pulled back if only to reach up and squish his cheeks together with a happy motherly giggle. ‘‘You’ll be even taller than Natsu one day, hehe. Now come sit down. I can make you some tea. Tell me all about what you’ve been up to!”

Watching as her face lit up, listening to her giggle. Could that single moment of happiness replace the horror imprinted inside his head? The look of terror in her eyes at the moment that marked both their lives, the memories of her screams, could they be replaced with such memories of peace ? As if erased from existence? The heart could heal, but like every deep wound, there would be a scar left behind. Not to disfigure, but to serve as the reminder of their strength, of the heights they overcome to become who they were this day. The burn mark on his face, the dark circles underneath her eyes, would always be marks life had left behind, giving them the power to keep pushing forward. She's always been his hero. She's always been the reason he never gave up, and now it'd be his turn to save her.

He managed to let go after a while — the squish on his cheeks forcing him to. How did she have this much power? He took a seat at his usual spot, not losing her from sight for a single moment. “ I don't think I'll catch up to him, ” he replied. He remembered Natsuo being much more taller than him around the same age. “ There's no need. ” He didn't want her to push herself too hard. She had done more than enough. His heartbeat wouldn't ease down, not for the next few hours. A bubbling excitement had risen inside of him, an unfamiliar feeling — or better say, long forgotten. “ I've mostly been focusing on my work study. ”
