At this point hes beyond in denial -- delusional.

The kitchen was quiet, except for the gentle clinking of bowls and the rhythmic chopping of bananas. Xiao stood by the counter, his adept hands handling the fruit with precision, as if it were some intricate Adeptus artifact. I stood beside him, my apron slightly askew, trying not to laugh at how focused he was. Who knew the Conqueror of Demons could be so serious about baking banana cake?

“Are you sure this is necessary?” Xiao asked, his amber eyes narrowing at the mixing bowl. “Couldn’t you just… buy one?”

I chuckled, grabbing the whisk from his hands. “Where’s the fun in that? Besides, you promised you’d help.”

He sighed, a hint of exasperation mixing with what I could only guess was amusement. “Fine. What’s next?”

“Flour and sugar,” I said, pointing to the ingredients on the counter. “And don’t forget to mash the bananas.”

Xiao moved swiftly, his movements sharp and calculated, yet oddly gentle as he worked the ingredients together. It was fascinating to watch someone so accustomed to wielding a spear handle something so mundane.

I couldn't resist teasing him a little. “You look like you’re ready to fight the cake batter.”

He shot me a glare but didn’t say anything, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

As the batter came together, I reached for the baking tin. Xiao poured the mixture in, his expression softening as he focused on the task. There was a strange peace in the air—no monsters to fight, no chaos, just us and the comforting smell of bananas.

When the cake was finally in the oven, Xiao leaned against the counter, arms crossed. “Is it always this… messy?” he asked, gesturing to the flour-covered countertop.

I grinned, holding up a smudge of batter on my finger. “It’s part of the fun.” Before he could react, I tapped his cheek with it, leaving a small smear.

His eyes widened, and for a moment, I thought I’d gone too far. But then he surprised me—he picked up a small bit of flour and flicked it in my direction, a smirk finally breaking through his usually stoic demeanor.

“By the way,” Xiao said, his tone casual yet carrying a hint of mischief, “I think some batter might’ve gotten on my neck. Can you check?”

I blinked at him, confused. “On your neck? Really?”

He nodded, tilting his head slightly, his golden eyes watching me intently. “Yes. Look closer.”

Leaning in hesitantly, I scanned his neck, the faint smell of almond blossoms and flour filling the air between us. “I don’t see anyth—”

Before I could finish, Xiao dipped his head and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. I froze, warmth spreading across my cheeks as he pulled back, his expression calm but his eyes holding something soft and unspoken.

“You’ve got flour on your forehead,” he said simply, as if that explained everything.

The timer dinged, breaking the moment. I turned away quickly, pretending to focus on the cake, my heart racing. Xiao’s subtle smile lingered as he leaned against the counter again, arms crossed like nothing had happened.

The banana cake was perfect, but it wasn’t the sweetest thing in the kitchen that day.
