ˣDefying Gravityˣ

Syd had never had such a long day as this one had projected to be, some twelve hours ago. Cases like this were few && very far in between, but when they arose, Syd found himself spending long, long hours at work, the drudgery of looking up facts && checking alibis lonely now that his partner was in the hospital.

It makes him grit his teeth && glance over to the empty desk that belonged to Chaz, anger boiling under his skin. It’s times like this he despised his inability to pull out Alias, go mete out personal vengeance to the scum who had done this to his best friend.

But he was a cop. So he pushes his dreams of revenge to the side, stands up, && exits the overheated workroom for a much needed break. He knew of a winery down the street that would still be open. But as he exited, the light fell on the familiar figure of Kat, the girl shifting from foot to foot.

She’d obviously heard the news.

Syd had no idea what the hell was going on. Granted, this was considerably normal whenever he ended up in an unfamiliar place, but he supposed that it was merely normal when he kept getting swept up by Gravity Rifts. He blows out a soft breath, looking somewhere between amused && frustrated. Perhaps he could ask someone - oh, there was a good one right now! Syd trots over, waiting until she’d turned to speak up.

“Uh, Miss?” He gives her a sheepish smile. “I’m afraid I’m a bit lost...”

He supposed that falling from the sky like this should have been more bothersome. He’d done it so often that it was a bit of an annoyance now, when it happened. The sky whipped past him, && Syd twists his body to get a better view.

Wow. Talk about a lot of water. Despite the many places he’d been to, water had always been a rarity - it was always the most expensive commodity in all of Heksville, && even Jirga Para Lhao had been no different. But here... Where there wasn’t buildings, there was water. Twisting around, he tried to get a better sense of his location.

... Was that a giant letter? Huh. He only saw it for a heartbeat, before he passed below the city skyline, a girl in a purple cape flying out of the way.

Oh.

Oooh. His head is ringing like crazy. Syd pushes up, fingers splaying out against the ground as he struggles to his feet. He hadn’t been this drunk in ages, to wake up somewhere he wasn’t familiar with. But as he sits up, he notices that there’s a few things missing. One - he’s definitely not at the bar, or his home. && two?

He wouldn’t be drinking with a kid.

Falling through the sky was starting to lose its appeal, Syd sighs to himself, lamenting the sight of the clouds falling away from him. Twisting around, he could see that there was water everywhere. Huh. It was going to be a pain to swim in this kind of water, he reasoned to himself moorsely. Maybe someone would see him! That would be nice.

When he hits the water, he barely feels it, sinking deep into the water. He can barely see any light, && he has to swim for a while before he surfaces.

Well. Getting dead was a lot more inconvenient than being lost, Syd decides. He’s been in this strange place for several days since his death, but he wasn’t exactly sure why. Bit had been many things, but forthcoming was never one of them. He’d simply told Syd to find a way back home.

Not that it was easy. There were a lot of monsters here, none like the Nevi of home, who were trained && docile now. But he sighs, watches the green skies with interest. He has to clamber down a weird ladder to get closer to the strange device, && when he does, he’s nearly smacked in the face by a boy. As it is, he overbalances, sprawling flat on his back.

“Ow...”

003. Headcanon

Crossover things I want to note.

For any Naruto crossovers, Syd has moderate chakra. He’s vastly better at genjutsu, && holds a lightning affinity (minor wind affinity). He’d probably never make it past Tokubetsu Jonin, mainly in genjutsu && possibly puppetmastery (Alias is amazing).

Bleach crossover verse... Hm. Syd’s probably part of the twelfth, if he has enough reiatsu to become a shinigami at all. Probably never more than an unseated officer, definitely not higher than 10th seat without some serious training put in. He’s more of a technogeek, but he’s also capable of getting out of slippery situations if needed.

Ben 10... He’s an alien of some sort. Who looks strangely like a human. Nobody knows how or why, but he’s not human. They did a dna test && everything.

In RWBY, Syd was never officially a Hunter. He was guarding Alua, a former Maiden before her untimely death, of which he became a policeman in Vale. But when he sees a girl just like Alua, he becomes her bodyguard again.

Syd wasn’t used to working cases with Raven. Kat was normally his partner, prone to talking about anything && everything to fill the silence of their normal interactions together. But Raven was less chatty, more concerned with solving the case than she was of conversing during it.

Snatching his hat before it fell into the abyss, Syd speaks up.

“Thanks for the lift Raven.” With some effort, he manages to trick the gravity into letting him sit right-side up. Kat still didn’t know how he knew to do that. Hopefully it would intrigue Raven into actually talking.

002. Headcanon

Syd has a variety of skills that aid in his overall capacity of ‘detective’. Many of the things he learned while in the upper Eto courts have become exceptionally useful in his day to day job of discerning && understanding the motivations of criminals.

Though when it comes to more... unusual cases, Syd is interestingly drawing more from his time as Alias, rather than his dubious life in the land of Eto. While Alias is a rather disturbing part of him, it cannot be denied that Alias’s colorful history did not shape part of his psyche.

001. headcanon

Syd did not actually like Alua when he first met her. Like Xicero, he thought her a bit foolish, naive, && overly optimistic. However, Syd was better at pretending he agreed with her, so he was given the task of being her instructor in the royal arts. It took time for Syd to realized that while she was both naive && optimistic, she was not a fool. She could be blinded by her beliefs, but she never made the same mistake twice, no matter how creatively.

The longer they worked together, the more protective && affectionate Syd became for her.
