fyodor smiles smugly at dazai's unnerving stare, unaffected by the latter's intense gaze. in fact, it only seemed to amuse the raven haired man, if the way he effortlessly moved his chess piece to take out dazai's unfortunate pawn was any indication.

"you know reverie despises you," dazai says instead, eyes intently staring at the board, determining which piece to move next to wipe away the smug grin on his opponent's face.

"despise seems such a strong word for someone who saw us sharing annotations together." fyodor hums. "besides, she is a much better companion, academically, of course. in any case, i much prefer her over you."

dazai narrows his eyes as a grin makes its way to his face. "oh? is that how you think? then remind me who exactly was the girl that played chess with me two days ago that was, dare i say, better than you? was it not she that i spent time with, alone, might i remind you, here in the warmth of this library, our topic being you? or has that slipped your mind, dostoevsky? you saw us leaving, no?”

fyodor’s smile was forced this time. “ah, such a low blow, insulting me in the middle of a chess game. but very well, how about we make this interesting, hmm?”

“oh?”

“two weeks. one week for each of us. the first man to get reverie’s approval, that is, allowing her to be close to us and gaining her favor entirely. it is she who will choose which one of us is the better student, though i must say that having her choose between the top two students in the class sounds rather thrilling, no?”

dazai hums. “thrilling, yes. entertaining, absolutely. just wait, you’re going to lose,” he chuckled darkly, sliding his white chess piece forward, effectively checking the black king.

fyodor smiled wider, his violet eyes glinting with mischievous amusement. “always so confident.” he easily moved to protect his king.

“may the best man win.” they both said in unison just as the object of their conversation opened the door to the library quietly.

“reverie!”

OKAY FINEE, here’s a brief !! summary of the academia!au bcz guess what’s (maybe) going to be written someday ;)

first of all this was all inspired by this one artist on twt who drew uni!au bsd characters; i saw fyodor’s first months ago & when i saw the info i was like I’D STILL FALL IN LOVE W/ SOMEONE LIKE HIM 😭 (btw here’s dazai’s for you + since he’s relevant too) + ofc it’s SO OBVIOUS THEY WOULD BE ACADEMIC RIVALS.

think: prestigious uni + academic vibes galore ofc !! def fall/winter setting. & you’re STRUGGLING with russian. chose to take it bcz you needed an xtra class & just wanted to appear studious :’) but ofc it was way harder than it seemed & you lowk regret it now !! backtrack btw, you’re competing w/ this one brunette all your friends r acquainted with (ada ensemble) for top of the class, & it kind of pisses you off bcz he NEVER studies & likes to tease you all day, but he still gets perfect scores. anyways, you like to study in the library. tht’s how you meet fyodor—a new transfer student—who also pisses you off !! bcz he sees you struggling & mocks you for it & says it’s so easy (duh cz it’s his native tongue).

then you decide to join the chess club and to your luck, both of them are there too !! you suspected fyodor would probably be interested, so he didn’t surprise you, but you were shocked with dazai, bcz again…he did not look like someone who would to you. but how wrong you were, about him, about fyodor—everything, once you got to know them better.

oh & btw it’s all three of you competing now ofc. and trust the dynamic here is SO IMPORTANT, (♟️ is so important !! in our dynamic in gen actually; it’s like if you ever read ‘if we were villains’ & you know how SHAKESPEARE was so important to their plot...😬) honestly i said too much but tht’s what i can summarize for now HAHA

IF FYORIE LORE WAS AA MOVIE.. WHAT AM I PACING MYSELF TOOO!! 🙏🙏

this is my fav ask ever, btw. think enemies to lovers w/ a heavy past (except it’s blatantly obvious they never hated each other; they are madly infatuated w/ one another & js deny it to have everyone losing their minds :’) over a slowburn), the most breathtaking sceneries (from the dead of winter in moscow to the cherubic summer in italy), looots of lines tht could b quoted like poetry (LMAO), more than a few rly romantic scenes, a promise tht would lead to almost seeming like it got broken but in the end was kept, and a supa sentimental, happy ending. in general it’s rly DRAMATIC lol, but in the best & most emotional way <3

fedya and i’s nighttime routine !! on a good day, it consists of us in the library and him teaching me a few new russian words…(my favorite is “milaya,” i love the term of endearment & how softly he says it) and then we get lost in our own books until i’m ready to sleep. fyo senses this too, picks me up, and carries me bridal style to our room.^/^

on the more common occasion…i have to drag him out of his office and force him to rest. however, tht usually ends up w/ me falling asleep on his lap mid-persuasion. :’)

but WHAT I HAVE SO FAR !! the secret history & if we were villains ofc; ik they’re so popular but the first is rly the blueprint for the ‘dark academia vibe’ imo 🥹. & let me talk abt the second…

if we were villains is abt a group of theatre kids who study about shakespeare. (LOL is this already typical of me?) they are all close friends (altho they acc all have complex feelings abt each other) but one tragic night results in a murder of one of them. the book is basically about how all of it came to be. there’s this one line that goes “do you blame shakespeare for any of it?” & the main character replies “i blame him for all of it.” i was rly inspired by how the theme of shakespeare was incorporated into the story & how it caused such tragedy (even though shakespeare wasn’t an actual character; even alive, etc.) therefore, i took inspiration from it to add to the fyozai academia universe, where our demise is ofc…the fyozai chess game tht asagiri also uses as a metaphor in bsd !! & it’s both literal & a theme — the three of us all literally play chess, & it’s also used as a metaphor for MY three-way manipulation mind game… 🙂‍↕️ hehe.

also i feel like fyodor is so henry winter from the secret history. but anyways ik these are only two, so i promise i’ll come back w/ more recs for you !! (esp since it’s almost autumn) they’re both supa similar — TSH is basically the same plot as IWWV except they study greek/latin instead of shakespeare, but i enjoyed both of them.

dazai & i have been on a lot of picnics recently !! i’d wear my fav sundresses & he’d drive us somewhere into the fields where it’d be vv peaceful & we’d have a delicious brunch. the food would b a lot more fulfilling too bcz many things we brought r homemade !! 👩🏻‍🍳 sometimes he’d even pick some of the wildflowers & create a small bouquet for me; it’d b the sweetest thing <3

fyodor’s 🥇 at “bro knows a spot” hehe, & lately he’s taken me along to walk through castle or church ruins. i can’t tell if the fragmented architecture & gardens or fyodor is more breathtaking 🥹 but the sights r so pretty !!

our timeline? we got acquainted in europe under some foreign secret organization tht isn’t relevant, except the fact tht it sealed our fate. i always knew he had grandiose aspirations, and he of course saw through tht i was a girl of reveries. we were both big thinkers, reflected in our shared interest in philosophy, future-oriented mindsets, etc. however, even so, he had a goal which didn’t match up w/ my morals…(yes this is him being the super evil bad >:( guy) so one day, he disappeared. left the organization (he was only using it anyway, per usual) & i never saw him again until i was in yokohama’s PM and he decided to find me himself. we came…a long way !! (aka slowburn enemies to lovers)

maybe he still is the super evil bad guy, but he has a soft side too. fedya dances with me in halls only lit by candles if we’re both still up past midnight. his love language is def words of affirmation, but he’s also still annoying so he writes everything in russian, making me solve even more puzzles to read his words. (very worth it though ‪‪❤︎‬). and of course…he loves to sketch me, esp when he catches me doing anything i’m passionate about. :)
