Hope for a blue cove week. The last week has been brutal in Taiji. A super pod of hundreds of bottlenose dolphins were herded into the cove. Liz Carter captured this footage of juveniles being ripped from their mothers for a life in captivity while trying desperately to stay together. Important info from our friends at @keiko_conservation! Please read below and speak up against cetacean captivity in Russia to prevent additional individuals from being captured and exploited. #Repost @keiko_conservation ・・・ URGENT! In Russia there's a proposed quota to capture 13 orcas and 200 belugas in 2019 😐! On top of these animals being doomed to a life in captivity, the actual captures are brutal. Without much expierence, fishermen end up killing many animals in the process. Also, without enough information on population numbers in the area, it's worrying that removing so many could be very harmful towards the remaining population's overall survival. Our friend @dolphin_project_rus is asking people to speak out worldwide before the quotas are discussed on May 3rd (only days away). They're asking for people to take a photo with one of the images they've provided. You can screenshot them off their page @dolphin_project_rus or we've also added them to our website, linked in bio. Many still don't know what was required to get these animals into dolphinariums, nor the suffering they go through to just survive their new living conditions. It's extremely distressing to see this sort of behavior happening in a captive environment but even more distressing to hear that it happens often at @hiltonhawaiianvillage's @dolphin_quest facility without any employee interference. About a year and a half ago we joined @animalrightshawaii, @emptythetankshawaii, and @humanesociety at a Department Of Agriculture hearing in opposition to Dolphin Quest's request to swap a few dolphins between their facilities on the Big Island (this one) and Oahu (@kahala_resort). They wanted to transfer the dolphins to expand their breeding pool and fill their crowded "dolphin lagoons" with even more animals. We lost by one vote. BUT were encouraged that this department nearly always votes unanimously and was only supposed to judge the situation on whether or not the transfer would affect the local agriculture, which of course these dolphins wouldn't in captivity. To get nearly half to still vote in opposition was apparently good news but not good enough. This calf is the direct result. It is so important to use your voice at every opportunity. They do this during a holding period of 1-3 months before the animals are put on display. They also make the submit to human touch and accept the use of the hydration hose, a tube that is placed down their throat with a funnel attached to pour in fresh water to make up for the hydration they would usually get from fresh fish in the wild. A humongous thank you to @thedodo for sharing @earth_voice's article about #JusticeForKina on their Snapchat feed! We are so relieved more and more people will hear her story and have the opportunity to speak up for her. She's going on TWENTY MONTHS of living in this tub. Can you imagine spending 20 months in one small area with no shade, no family, no stimuli? We were recently told @SeaLifePark received grants for Kina and intends to move her out to a tank on display and continue research on her amazing sonar abilities. Although we are happy she will have more activity and interactions (anything is better than what she's experiencing now), we are in NO WAY in support of this as a solution. To simply move her out of what was borderline solitary confinement into general captivity, entertaining guests at a run down facility with a history of over 124 cetaceans deaths (including other false killer whales from Japanese drive fisheries), is NOT a solution. She deserves to be retired to a sanctuary. She is owed that much. Meet Jeff Pawloski, current animal curator of @sealifepark. Please email him and demand #JusticeForKina. Kina is the last surviving cetacean from a Japanese drive fishery in the US, she was moved OUT of a seapen in August of 2015 without any of the required transfer permits, and has been sitting behind the scenes with no companions or even sun coverage ever since. Board Of Agriculture has IGNORED all of our concerns even though it was their responsibility to grant the permit on time. And the only reason she's been able to be kept in such poor conditions, all alone, is because she's technically in "quarantine." We were incredibly saddened to wake up to the news of Tilikum's passing. The mental and physical abuse this whale suffered for 30 years, after being abducted from his family at only two years old, is a prime example of the inexcusable, unjustifiable, and greedy things our species does to animals for the sake of money and "entertainment." There are just so many things wrong with this, but the worst is the realization that these bottlenose dolphins came from Taiji. In 2016, 15 dolphins were flown to Moscow from Taiji and 14 arrived. No one knows what happened to the 15th dolphin but it isn't too hard to guess.
