some of the only times adam and lute don't seem to be glued at the hip come from extermination day. though they always tended to stick close, caught up in adrenaline and a year's worth of pent up bloodlust, it was far from uncommon for one to split from the other, chasing whatever high the senseless slaughter provided. this was no exception to the rule -- not that it particularly MATTERS. they always find their way back to one another eventually.

adam's guitar makes contact with brimstone before his feet do as he swoops down behind his lieutenant, whatever disgusting wretch that had been attempting to sneak up on her torn asunder by angelic steel, now laid out at their feet. whatever remark the first man starts to make is swiftly cut-off when he registers lute's unmasked face, brows raising almost automatically at the sight.

❝ what's the occasion? ❞ a playful smile appears on his face, raising a brow, ❝ ain't every day you let demons see that pretty face of yours, babe. ❞ easily, he sidesteps away when she lunges for another sinner, careful to stay out of the way of her rapier, his axe following suit. adam does his best to step in turn with lute, but lord above, he can't seem to keep his eyes off of her. he's seen her face before, plenty of times, but never like THIS. maybe the blood or murderous look in her eye would be off-putting to anyone else -- but quite frankly, adam can't get enough of it.

a brief moment of calm.

❝ not that i'm complaining. ❞ adam hums, clawed hand gently lifting lute's chin as he leans down to plant a kiss on her lips ( how? the same way he can eat and drink with that mask on. maybe if she asks nicely, she can get a REAL kiss out of him later. ) ❝ y'look good like this. ❞

the first man is many things. yet he is nothing at all. limited in his knowledge, in his ability to interact with others, and maybe still too young to figure out who he's meant to be. but perhaps it doesn't much matter who he is. he was not made to simply be, not in the way his descendants would. not like every other life meant for the earth.

the first man is many things. unbearably disobedient is one of them. such a weak little thing in the presence of angels, all-knowing and all-powerful ( or maybe that's just how it feels to something so SMALL. ) he was created for one purpose alone -- but that doesn't mean he's going to blindly listen to them.

and yet.

brown eyes scan lucifer's angellic visage, visibly confused by the strange request. adam waits in silence for a moment, perhaps hoping it would prompt some kind of EXPLANATION ( that always seemed to work on the others ) -- only to be met by silence in return. a brief, contemplative glance to one side. a sigh. he's piqued adam's interest.

❝ only if you promise this isn't something WEIRD. ❞ with a vague attempt at acting like he wasn't going to listen to him anyway, adam does as he's told, eyes shutting as he holds his hands out for ... whatever lucifer wants from him.

adam goes silent when he is told, watches quietly as injured soldiers shuffle out. perhaps, if you look closely, there's a twinge of guilt in adam's eyes. in the little frown that crosses his features. it's gone as soon as the seraph's attention falls fully on him, replaced by a more serious expression, one reserved only for lute and sera herself.

❝ LUCIFER happened. ❞ as simple an explanation as any. who else could've TOUCHED adam? he and his army may not have been the most defensively prepared ;; but adam wasn't a fucking pushover. ❝ his little BRAT wanted to fuck with me, and instead of going down with the rest of her stupid fucking friends, DADDY swooped in and saved her ass. ❞ i couldn't land more than one hit on him. the first man's pride leaves this fact unsaid, but he doubts it needs saying to begin with. they both know how powerful he is.

❝ we're just as vulnerable to holy weapons as they are, ❞ fucking WEAK, dude, ❝ and THEY made 'em into bullets and explosives and shit. the girls could probably fill you in on the specifics better than i could. ❞ he shifts, golden hues drifting away from the immortal's many eyes. he's not the best at reading people -- but it's not difficult to notice her anger, bubbling just below the surface. he allows himself a brief pause.

to return from an extermination covered in blood was to be expected from adam and his exorcists. to the same people that had turned the senseless slaughter of hell's population into a SPORT, a bloodsoaked uniform was nothing short of a trophy -- evidence of a job well done. a show of power.

but to return early, battered and bruised and covered in their own golden blood? that was new.

adam's been awake most of the day now. he was one of the few unconscious exorcists to be brought back the night prior, bleeding out when his lieutenant had brought him to this makeshift medical wing. they'd spent the past hours together, according to the other injured soldiers -- but evidently, lute is elsewhere at the moment. there's an attempt to adjust his posture when he and the high seraph make eye contact ( when was the last time she'd seen his face? ) perhaps forgetting how injured he was, a hiss of pain escaping serrated teeth.

❝ sera! ❞ cue another, slightly more successful attempt at sitting up in proper, wings shifting uncomfortably behind him. adam's seen better days, certainly -- even disregarding the bandaged wounds across his back, chest, and shoulder, the archangel's black eye and broken nose do nothing to change that fact. ❝ i, uh ... didn't think you'd be stoppin' by so soon. ❞ getting reprimanded wasn't on his to-do list today.
