                 “     it’s not your job to fix things, luna.     “          tone is terse. she’s a little guarded-the goodwin’s have a way of getting under helen’s skin. for years, she’s set boundaries and built walls, separating personal and professional, if only for her own piece of mind, to protect her bleeding heart. and in the span of, maybe, a year ? they managed to derail everything helen had grown to know, max especially. she’s careful not to look up from her work, pen held tightly in one hand, only ever glancing up at the screen of her computer and avoiding luna’s eyes entirely. but she knows, she can feel the other woman’s eyes pinned on her, and it eats away at her resolve with almost the same ease as her brother’s. with a heavy sigh, expelled through the parting of her lips, helen’s eyes close briefly before she swallowed, looking up at the other standing in her office doorway.          “     besides, there’s nothing to fix anyway. we’re fine. max is fine, i’m fine, we’re both fine-like always.     “

                         she has a mess of a department to clean up. castro’s exit was swift but it was not without it’s complications, and helen was left with the aftermath. though not a bad doctor, valentina was not equipped to lead a department. and a part of helen felt like she never should have handed it over like she did. but another part, a louder, more selfish part, would have done it again. she did it for max, so how could she bemoan the extra work. it’s not valentina’s fault that helen’s standards are too high. and it’s not max’s fault that he doesn’t see all that helen does for him. she doesn’t need him to see it anyway. and she certainly doesn’t need luna seeing it either.          “     can we just-not do this, please ? he’s not ready, and i’m ... i’m okay with that.      “          she just needs to lick her wounds in peace and move on.

i was briefly reminded of season one newdam when max gets med evac’d to the hospital and helen has to tell the others about his cancer so they can treat him, and how they were all a bit terse with helen about her knowing since day one and i just-doctor patient confidentiality does still apply even if the patient is also a doctor.

helen’s  full  name  is  haniah  helen  cyra  anvari  sharpe.  haniah  is  her  birth  name,  helen  is  her  english  name,  cyra  is  her  middle  name,  anvari  is  her  late-father’s  surname  and  sharpe  is  her  late-step-father’s  surname.  she  legally  changed  her  name  to  helen  sharpe  when  she  was  eighteen.  very  few  people  know  this  about  her,  and  only  her  mother  still  calls  her  haniah.  mohammed  also  would  occasionally,  or  he  sometimes  shortened  it  to  hana.
