Silesian alphabet
Tumblr media
After the first post about Silesian, it’s time to get into the details! As I said there, the alphabet that in my opinion it’s the most accurate one is: A Ã B C Ć D E F G H I J K L Ł M N Ń O Ŏ Ō Ô Õ P R S Ś T U W Y Z Ź Ż
Almost all the sounds cover the Polish ones, so I won’t get into it (you can find a good post about the Polish pronunciation here) The only letter that differs is Ō, it’s a sound between o (short) and u (English oo). It appears in the word Ślōnsk (Silesia).
What about other letters? Silesian wasn’t meant to be written so they are purely made for ortography purposes.  Ã - appears in place of Polish ‘ę’ (usually at the end of nouns in genitive, but there are exceptions), makes a short ‘a’ sound Polish - dziękuję Silesian - dziynkujã
Ŏ - appears in place of Polish ‘a’ , makes a short ‘o’ sound Polish - gadać Silesian - gŏdać
Ô - makes a ‘ło’ or English ‘wo’ sound  ôbŏcz - look! (imperative)
Õ - makes a short ‘o’ sound, it appears only in feminine words in accusative case ending with -yjo or -ijo  ôglōndōm telewizyjõ - I’m watching television
Treat this information more like a fun fact, most of Silesians don’t know how to write in it using this alphabet.
