The Étang de Montady (or the "pond of Montady") is a former freshwater wetland that was drained by monks during the second half of the 13th century. The Étang de Montady is near Colombiers, midway between Béziers and Narbonne, in the western department of Hérault, in southern France. . The area was drained by making radial ditches from a single center point out to the extremities. The water flows to this center point and is then drained through an underground culvert and through the Malpas hill and under the Malpas Tunnel of the Canal du Midi. . The field plots are of a triangular configuration due to the radial lines from the center. . #montady #etang #etangdemontady #beziers #colombiers #malpas #malpastunnel #france #farming #drainage #anthonyquigley #earthimages #earthimage #upintheair #abovetheclouds #satelliteimage #satelliteimages #EarthOverhead #overview #overvieweffect https://ift.tt/2L0CekL

Beziers
17 June 2017 A few kilometres before Beziers is a Gallo-Romano archaeology site, Enserune. The GPS took us along narrow, paved but pot-holed, gravelly roads running through wheat and corn fields. We came to the base of a steep sided hill as 5 fire tankers, 2 strikers and a rescue vehicle came down. No fire up there but smoke to the east. Everything is dry and temperatures are high every day. The site dates back to the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, the Gallic tribes of the Iron Age, then mix of Gauls and Romans - most of the remains are from the latter period. The museum, the excavated houses, workshops and cemetery are fantastic but the draw card for the site is the landscape below - the Étang de Montady is a huge bowl-shaped depression with lines of trees radiating out from the central sun. In between the lines of trees are different coloured crops. At Fonserane there are 7 working locks that raise boats up the Canal du Midi. When we arrived, The Little Train for Beziers was leaving in 5 minutes. Mick was mortified when I came out of the office with 2 tickets for the train - how embarrassing for a motorbike rider to get into something as ridiculous as that. It meandered along the canal, struggled up the hill, trundled through the town at 5km/hr. We spent an hour in the cathedral and walking the narrow streets of the old town and caught the last train back to Fonserane where 3 boats had just entered the last lock. We stayed to watch for awhile then took the Autoroute home, riding into the hot western sun.

Étang de Montady in Provence, a drained pond with a circle of ditches now used to water crops. It can be seen both from a nearby hill, and on google maps!

Étang de Montady, Montady, France http://ift.tt/2k8ilKt . http://ift.tt/1WCSb2p . Étang de Montady, or the "pond of Montady", is a drained "lagoon" or more accurately a former freshwater wetland that is popularly said to have been "constructed by the Visigoths" but was realised by monks during the second half of the 13th century, under authorization of the archbishop of Narbonne. The field plots are of a triangular configuration due to the radial lines from the center. . The fact that the drain for Montady went through Malpas encouraged Pierre-Paul Riquet, the designer of the Canal du Midi, that he could build a tunnel through the same hill for his canal. . #earthimages #earthimage #upintheair #abovetheclouds #satelliteimage #satelliteimages #EarthOverhead #overview #overvieweffect #canaldumidi 3montady #etangdemontady #beziers #colombiers #narbonne #MalpasTunnel #Hérault #france http://ift.tt/2jhumit
