It’s Friday and not only is the UK in lock down but so is the whole world, nearly anyway!! therefore The Vaccines are releasing this video for a demo that has never been out, which is titled I Never Go Out On Fridays. This video has just Premiered on their you tube page. The video is just the band filmed in their homes.

The Vaccines are an English indie rock band, that formed in West London in 2010. The bands current lineup is Justin Hayward-Young (lead vocals, guitar), Freddie Cowan (lead guitar, vocals), Árni Árnason (bass, vocals), Timothy Lanham (keyboards) and Yoann Intonti (drums).

Interview on ‘Þvottur‘ - translation

This article from January 2016 is about yet another one of Matthías’ theater projects, a play called “Þvottur” (“Washing”). Translation below, with surprise Klemens at the end.

Make them feel the teawater

[This headline is an Icelandic idiom meaning to rough someone up. You’ll see why I’m translating it literally soon.]

“This is a short play about eternal window-washing. It’s about a man who’s tasked with wiping the same glass pane repeatedly and without end. Then the question is whether he accepts his lot or rejects it,” says Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson, who wrote and directs the play Þvottur, which newly-founded performing group Little Kettle Company will put on in Tjarnarbíó in February.

The founders of the group are first-year students of the Performing Arts division of the Iceland Academy of the Arts. In addition to Matthías, Alma Mjöll Ólafsdóttir serves as assistant director and production designer and Stefán Ingvar Vigfússon produces it.

The name of the group refers to a kettle used to boil water. “We decided it was in the spirit of the group to name ourselves after a well-chosen kitchen appliance, and we chose the kettle, not least because we imagined the boiling, the heat and the experimentation that we want to define our collaboration,” says Matthías, and Alma Mjöll adds: “Also, we’re determined to make the Icelandic theater arts community feel the teawater.”

Matthías believes that despite the surreality of the piece, it has certain parallels to reality. “I think everyone has their own glass pane, whatever that signifies for them.”

He says Þvottur is the start to further collaborations for the group. “We aim to be diligent in putting out theater pieces, whether the group retains the same composition or not, and we’re planning to try out different roles. Whether we ourselves step onto the stage next is yet to be determined. I know Alma has a script in her drawer waiting to see the light of day.”

Matthías himself is excited to see his play on stage. Þvottur is the third piece that he stages, but the first to have the stage to itself - his two previous works were staged by Ungleikur [a youth theater company] and shared the stage with works by other young playwrights. Matthías got into playwriting at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík [his school from ages 16-20], where he was part of translating and producing a play by Gertrude Stein.

“Then a new world opened up to me that I hadn’t seen before. I’d been writing poetry before that, and I’m still doing that,” he says cheerfully, adding that it’s a fascinating feeling to watch characters he’s created come to life on stage. “It’s a little weird to finally meet these people that until now have only existed in your head. It’s almost upsetting, and then you have to direct them on top of that.”

Þvottur will premiere at Tjarnarbíó on February 17th. The cast consists of Aron Már Ólafsson, Árni Beinteinn Árnason and Hákon Jóhannesson [the one from Iceland Music News], who are all students at the acting division of the Academy of the Arts. Friðrik Guðmundsson handles the music and Klemens Hannigan [!] handles the set.

Translation notes

As mentioned, the whole “make them feel the teawater” thing is an untranslateable pun on the name of their group.

The group’s name is originally “Ketiltetur”, which would be more closely translated as something like “kettle runt”. However, the word is pretty catchy in Icelandic since there’s a nice assonant ring to it - and as it happens, “Little Kettle” makes for a pretty similar effect with this half-rhyme. If I were them and wanted to translate the name into English, I would totally go with Little Kettle. (There’s a photo of them in the article with a literal tiny kettle that they have as a good luck charm, so the small connotation does seem more important than the weak/pathetic connotation.)

Sigur Rós announce limited-edition vinyl releases, reveal shitlóað of new information for upcoming Norður og Niður festival

As promised, Iceland’s favorite experimental rock sons Sigur Rós have announced additions to the lineup for next month’s sure-to-be-spellbinding Norður og Niður festival, the multifarious music/dance/art/film shindig that the band is curating at Reykjavik’s Harpa Concert Hall from December 27-31. In addition to the already-announced artists (which include the likes of Mogwai, Julianna Barwick, Sin Fang, Dan Deacon, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields), the Sigur Bros have further-aroused our sonic procreation devices with the inclusion of L.A.-based producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, German ambient trio Tangerine Dream, Icelandic dance legends GusGus, and Vaccines’ bassist Árni Árnason, who’ll be taking to the stage on opening day to showcase some of the psych-fuzz “muzak vibes” from his new solo project. Also, it was revealed that the festival’s opening ceremony will feature Sigur Rós’s orchestral collaborator Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson in a one-off performance with rímur chanter Steindór Andersen and Páll Guðmundsson on traditional Icelandic stone marimba. We’re not sure what kind of an arrangement that will end up being, but beneath the aura of those mystical Northern Lights, you can bet your most resonant marimba stone it’ll be a goddamn treat. Additionally, the great Alex Somers himself (soundboard guru/mixer/multi-instrumentalist) will be producing tracks from a collection of antique gramophones each night after the Sigur Rós set, so you’ll definitely want to check that out…if, of course, Sigur hasn’t blown your soul into an alternate dimension of time and space beforehand. And FINALLY, perhaps more importantly than all of this festival lineup announcement stuff, is the news that several super-limited edition vinyls will be released over the course of the four day festival. Notably, Jónsi himself will be releasing Frakkur, 2000-2004, a collection of solo recordings that were cut from several albums’ worth of previously unheard material (check out the record’s untitled opening track below). Icelandic multi-media artist Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir will also be creating original sleeve designs for the first 100 copies of the record, which will be available on-site at the Harpa Concert Hall. Other rare and previously unreleased vinyls that will be unveiled at Norður og Niður include: • Sigur Rós Route One - an album created with “groundbreaking generative music software” during the band’s 24-hour drive around Ring Road on winter solstice 2016 • Liminal Remixes - a Jónsi, Alex Somers & Paul Corley collab featuring never-before-heard ambient versions of classic Sigur Rós tracks • All Animals - the deleted Jónsi & Alex EP that was released shortly after Riceboy Sleeps (this will be the record’s first-ever vinyl release) • Alex Somers - a brand new album of unreleased music from the Sigur Rós producer/collaborator All of the above titles will be launched at Norður og Niður and released in limited, 100-run editions with handmade and color-coded sleeves, in addition to a limited online release that will take place shortly after the New Year, during which the records will be available in the Sigur Rós webstore.
