A reference to the Øresund Bridge.
A connection between Denmark and Sweden which is part bridge, part tunnel... The reason for the tunnel was apparently because a bridge would interferer with air-traffic from the nearby Copenhagen Airport. (Referred to as Kastrup because that's the official name of the airport.)
(It wasn't suggested by a Norwegian btw... I just included Norway to have a neutral third party)

The bridge that comes from Sweden turns into a tunnel under the sea and reappears in Denmark; both countries united by this wonderful work of Engineering.
It has a total length of 16 kilometers and connects Denmark with Sweden through the Øresund Strait. The Oresund Bridge was built in 2000 and allows the passage of cars (highway) and trains between Denmark and Sweden. Before its construction, all traffic between the two countries was carried out by ferry.

Six Seven Eight Nine Sentence Sunday
“This is the Nyhavn canal. It was dug by Swedish prisoners of war in the 1600s. And this–,” Jamie said, stopping the bike on a pedestrian bridge over the waterway as Roy caught up with him, “—is the Inderhavnsbroen Bridge.”
“Do you know the name of every fucking bridge in Copenhagen?”
“No,” Jamie scoffed, his face crumpling into itself in astonishment at Roy’s question.
“Yeah, that’s probably a stupid thing to ask. I bet there are a ton of fucking bridges.”
“I mean there’s nine, it’s not that many.”
“You know all the names, don’t you?”
“Okay, yes I know all the fucking names. I didn’t know which ones we’d ride over. There’s Queen Louise’s Bridge, Cykelslangen, the bicycle bridge, the Bryggebroen bridge, the Øresund Bridge that connects Denmark and Sweeden, the Circle Bridge, Lille Langebro, the Knippel Bridge, get your mind out of the gutter, mate, and the Nyhavnsbroen Bridge.”

Malmo, Sweden
Oslo | Flam Train | Nærøyfjord & Sognefjord | Bergen | Copenhagen | Malmo, Sweden | Norway travel tips
Tumblr media
On our way back, we had an overnight layover in Copenhagen, with flight 2pm the next day. My husband learned Sweden is only a short train ride away. Too little time to make a trip, he feels.  So I asked the kids about visiting Sweden.  They both enthusiastically said yes!
The next morning at 8:30am, the kids and I got on the subway then train to Sweden.   It passes thru a long 8km bridge over the Øresund, and is quite an engineering feat.  On the easy train ride over the bridge, we saw rows of wind turbines in the water.
From Copenhagen Airport train station, it's actually only 13 mins to reach the shore of Sweden, then double that to reach the city of Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden. Malmo has a mixture of old and new, just like Copenhagen and Oslo, as well as canals around the city.
We also noticed there were a lot of sculpture and public art.
We saw Kungsparken, a big park with a fortress and a windmill, and groups of school children on field trips.
We passed by Stortorget, the main square with impressive historical buildings. In one of those, My daughter finally got a chance to check out the pharmacy, with wider variety of products than in Norway.  The weather was a bit warmer than in Copenhagen, and sunny and enjoyable.
One of the notable sights is the Turning Torso highrise, that twists as it rises, you can see it peeking through above the rooftops below.

Quickly, our hour plus of exploring came to an end, and we ran to catch the train back to Copenhagen Airport.
Learn more about Malmo at this helpful Website.

Claes Update:
• Claes Bang is Denmark's new big shot in the film star sky - and he is the newly minted host of a film program that examines some of the world's best films. He visits the studio today to talk about the program where he gets other moviegoers to visit with their favorite movies. And then two sunken ships lie in the way when a new navigation channel is to be created in Øresund. The two ships are currently being fished up by the healthy bite by bite - and we pass through to the boat that is currently fishing for items from the shipwrecks.
Hosts: Linnea Albinus Lande and Karen Secher.
Episode 1: Claes Bang collects the world's best films in a new podcast.
• Episode 2: Games must build cultural bridges.
• Episode 3: Live from the excavation boat in Øresund.
• Sorry if my translation isn’t correct in some areas

En Route to Germany (No. 13)
Construction of the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark (completed 1997) and the Øresund Bridge-Tunnel (completed 1999), linking Denmark with Sweden, provided a highway and railroad connection between Sweden and the Danish mainland (the Jutland Peninsula, precisely the Zealand). The undersea tunnel of the Øresund Bridge-Tunnel provides for navigation of large ships into and out of the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is the main trade route for the export of Russian petroleum. Many of the countries neighboring the Baltic Sea have been concerned about this since a major oil leak in a seagoing tanker would be disastrous for the Baltic—given the slow exchange of water. The tourism industry surrounding the Baltic Sea is naturally concerned about oil pollution.
Much shipbuilding is carried out in the shipyards around the Baltic Sea. The largest shipyards are at Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Szczecin, Poland; Kiel, Germany; Karlskrona and Malmö, Sweden; Rauma, Turku, and Helsinki, Finland; Riga, Ventspils, and Liepāja, Latvia; Klaipėda, Lithuania; and Saint Petersburg, Russia.
There are several cargo and passenger ferries that operate on the Baltic Sea, such as Scandlines, Silja Line, Polferries, the Viking Line, Tallink, and Superfast Ferries.
Construction of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link between Denmark and Germany is due to finish in 2029. It will be a three-bore tunnel carrying four motorway lanes and two rail tracks.

On Saturday 5 October in the evening, the Storebælt Bridge will be lit up in pink colours in honour of volunteers, associations and the business community that support the campaign Support Breasts for women with breast cancer.
This is according to the Danish Cancer Society.
In addition to the bridge over the Great Belt, other parts of the country will be affected by pink colours. Among other things, Tivoli Gardens and the French Embassy as well as the Øresund Bridge will glow pink in the evening sky.
Saturday 5 October has been dubbed Pink Saturday by the Danish Cancer Society, which holds the finale for the campaign's many events throughout the year.

Is the Swedish coast visible from Copenhagen?
Indeed, there are views of the Swedish coast from several locations in Copenhagen, particularly from the Øresund Bridge. On days with good visibility across the Øresund Strait, you can make out Malmö and the Swedish coastline. By connecting Copenhagen and Malmö, the bridge itself brings Sweden even closer!
With our app, Book My Ride can assist you in finding and comparing all taxis in Sweden, including Stockholm and Malmö, in one location if you're planning a trip between these two cities. It's an easy method to reserve a ride.
