On this day in show business history (14 October 1963), a grief-stricken Marlene Dietrich attended the funeral of her friend, the venerated French chanteuse Édith Piaf (Édith Giovanna Gassion, 19 December 1915 - 10 October 1963) in Paris. “The sparrow of the Paris streets,” Dietrich reflected on Piaf in her 1962 book Marlene Dietrich’s ABC. “A waif from the wrong side of the tracks. A soul which was born hurt and wouldn’t say die. An idealist, an optimist with sad eyes, a frail body marked by a childhood full of hunger, hands of a princess. Delicate and robust, courageous and shy, singing her heart out, giving her love, her friendship, her help and inspiration, believing in all and everything with the mighty strength of her romantic soul – the sparrow became phoenix.” (Marlene Dietrich’s ABC is a compilation of the diva’s wit and wisdom and musings on various subjects arranged in alphabetical order – including cooking tips! – and is a blast). La Môme Piaf is, of course, interred at the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise – the starriest of Parisian cemeteries.

Édith Giovanna Gassion, known as Édith Piaf (French pronunciation: [edit pjaf]), was a French entertainer best known for performing songs in the cabaret and modern chanson genres. She is widely regarded as France's greatest popular singer and one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century.
Piaf's music was often autobiographical, and she specialized in chanson réaliste and torch ballads about love, loss and sorrow. Her most widely known songs include "La Vie en rose" (1946), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "La Foule" (1957), "L'Accordéoniste" (1940), and "Padam, padam..." (1951). Having begun her career touring with her father at age fourteen, her fame increased during the German occupation of France and in 1945,
Piaf's signature song, "La Vie en rose" ('life in pink') was published. She became France's most popular entertainer in the late 1940s, also touring Europe, South America and the United States, where her popularity led to eight appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Died sixty years ago today aged just 47: tormented but resilient Parisian chanteuse extraordinaire and swooning romantic masochist Édith Piaf aka La Môme Piaf (Édith Giovanna Gassion, 19 December 1915 - 10 October 1963). My favourite song of Piaf’s will always be “T'es beau, Tu Sais.”

Icons! Once seen, this photo is hard to forget. Not sure about the details, but supposedly it was taken in NYC in 1948. Just make up your own fan fiction for yourself about Julie, Edith Piaf, and Josephine Baker!!
Check out video of La Baker dancing and also the Little Sparrow singing. Because they are so iconic and FABULOUS, here’s more: beautiful Black Venus photos and song, and another classic by La Môme Piaf.

Born Freda Josephine McDonald on June 3, 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri – died April 12, 1975 in Paris.
The extraordinary Josephine Baker was an American-born, but French-based entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights activist. The singer, dancer, actor was known as "Black Venus", "Black Pearl", "Bronze Venus", "Creole Goddess”, and “La Baker”. In 1927, she was the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, the silent film “Siren of the Tropics”.
The entertainer refused to perform for segregated audiences in the US and her insistence helped integrate live shows. In 1963, La Baker was the only official female speaker at the March on Washington and spoke at Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s side.
On April 8, 1975, Baker starred in Joséphine à Bobino 1975, celebrating 50 years in show business. The revue was financed by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, along with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The opening night audience included Sophia Loren, Mick Jagger, Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross, and Liza Minnelli.
Four days later, Baker was found in bed in a coma after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage and died at the hospital at age 68.
On November 30, 2021, Josephine Baker became the first Black woman and is only the sixth woman to be granted a tomb in the Pantheon in Paris. Baker’s tomb is among 80 others honoring scientist Marie Curie, French philosopher Voltaire, writer Victor Hugo and other French luminaries.

Born Édith Giovanna Gassion on December 19, 1915, Paris, France—died October 10, 1963, Plascassier, near Grasse.
In 1935, Édith Piaf was discovered in Paris by nightclub owner Louis Leplée. His club, Le Gerny's near Champs-Élysées was popular with both upper and lower class clientele. Her height of 4 ft 8 inspired him to nickname her La Môme Piaf meaning "The Waif Sparrow" or "The Little Sparrow”.
She died of a ruptured aneurysm due to liver failure at age 47 at her villa on the French Riviera.

Sixty years ago today in show business history (14 October 1963), a grief-stricken Marlene Dietrich (pictured) attended the funeral of her friend Edith Piaf (Édith Giovanna Gassion, 19 December 1915 - 10 October 1963).  The venerated French chanteuse’s funeral brought Paris to a halt. From Wikipedia: “Shortly after her death, Piaf's funeral procession drew tens of thousands of mourners onto the streets of Paris, and the ceremony at the cemetery was attended by more than 100,000 fans. According to Piaf's colleague Charles Aznavour, Piaf's funeral procession was the only time since the end of World War II that the traffic in Paris had come to a complete stop.” La Môme Piaf is, of course, interred at the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise – the starriest of Parisian cemeteries.
