In the footsteps of Nietzsche and Albert Spaggiari on the Côte d'Azur

Memorial plaque for Friedrich Nietzsche at 38 Rue Catherine Segurane, Nice
Sometimes to go to on a seaside vacation is a most serious debitum. To find something you will enjoy is an absolute necessity.
Nice is certainly a place, but not a city. It is a place that invites you to idleness, but it doesn't even have a sandy beach. The marks those pebbles leave on your behind disappear quickly, but the exorbitant prices are something you will remember for a long time.
Now some of the good stuff:
even if you usually don't enjoy dishes that have fish, you will like the salade niçoise
the pissaladière
the Lorina limonade that they sell in flip-top bottles
If you want to go to a sandy beach then you can take the train to Italy proper. After 50 minutes or so you will arrive in Ventimiglia. You will rely on Google maps and you will regret that quickly, but after going through a tunnel, climbing some stairs between houses and building sites, taking turns left and right you arrive at an unassuming castle. You know that you are at the right place and you start your descent. Bushes, rocks and rust and then suddenly the beach. First you can see the peculiar structure of an elevator climbing the rock, then a shabby bar where playing cards is forbidden. The railway is just above so the beach itself feels like something taken out of a spagghetti western.

Everyone will say that you should visit Èze. They are wrong, you should visit instead a Transylvanian peasant fortress. I was just done ranting up in the village when I noticed the sign: Sentier Nietzsche. With a renewed gusto we followed Nietzsche's path downhill.

If you feel fit you can go uphill, but there's a risk: you might get inspiration to complete your most important philosophical work.
(more to follow with analogue photos)
P.S. Buy the cigarettes in Italy. They are half the price. Always buy Chiara Valle.

A fountain built in 1930 in the hillside village of Èze, France. It was the first time the inhabitants had ever had running water, until then, Ezasques depended on tanks installed throughout the village and on the water cariers who carried the precious liquid up the hill from a fountain at the foot of the village.

The medieval town of Eze
The French Riviera is one of the best vacation spots in the world. If you’ve never been there, you don’t know what you’re missing. Èze is located along the Côte d’Azur, with the town running from the Èze-sur-Mer to the Èze Village. It’s a commune of sorts, replete with both beaches along the Mediterranean to a medieval village. If you’re looking for a destination, this may be the perfect spot for you.

There are all sorts of places to visit in Èze, whether you’re just looking for a gorgeous view of the sea or enjoy more of a desert view. The small village is known for its historic charm. There are buildings in the village that date back to the 14th Century. Today, it’s more known for its tourism than for its history. People who go to Èze from the French Riviera are looking to take advantage of all the quaint shops, art galleries and restaurants located in the picturesque village.
Èze is not far from some of the other popular vacation spots on the French Riviera. In fact, there are only about 12 kilometers from Nice to Èze. This means you can either spend your days visiting some of the best places in Èze, or, you can take a family trip to some of the nearby towns and resorts. The best thing to do is take some time with a trip planner so you don’t miss out on any of the best things to do in Èze. The Èze South of France has a lot to offer and you don’t miss out on a single thing.
One of the great things about this small village is that it’s so close to some other cool and popular resorts. You may want to take a boat tour and head over to Monaco or, arrange for a car rental and simply tour some of the historic towns along the Côte d’Azur. If you’re looking for a more luxurious kind of excursion, take a private tour with a boat or engage in a yacht rental so you can explore some of the picturesque island villages along the French Riviera. If you do decide to hire a boat in Èze, you can take a half-day trip and check out nearby Nice or Monaco. Some of the adventure travel companies in Èze will show you all the potential trips you can take from Èze to Nice, or from Èze to Monaco. They can even arrange for private tours along the villages so the tour guide can help you get a bird’s eye view of all the historic sites.
Admittedly, aside from the stores, shops and galleries, there aren’t a ton of landmarks to see on Èze. You may want to explore some of the nearby towns as well. However, while in Èze, you can enjoy some delicious wines and cheeses. Grab a baguette and spend the afternoon people watching while checking out the local art. In the evening, you can enjoy some of the local restaurants and catch a bit of live music. Head to bed a bit early so you can get ready for your half-day or full-day trips to some of the nearby towns.
If you’re a fan of hiking, you can head on over to Monaco and take in any number of great walking trails. For people who’ve been to Monaco before, they may decide to check out some of the lesser known sites, such as Sentier du Littoral de Cap d’Ail. Or, if you’re a history buff, you can spend the afternoon at the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Just make sure you bring your walking shoes. You can spend the afternoon working up an appetite and then enjoy some crepes and French cuisine back in the Èze village.
If you really want to treat yourself, arrange for a private jet rental and spent the morning observing all the small villages and resorts along the French Riviera. Some of the private tours with a helicopter are breathtaking. You’ll be sure to get some pictures that make you the envy of all your friends. If you’re on a budget and a yacht or jet are not in the cards, that’s okay. You can rent a car in Èze and take a few day trips. Head on over to the medieval hilltop and tour the historic Fragonard Perfume Factory or, you and your family can opt for bus travel or a car trip and check out all the local sites.
While spending some time enjoying the history of Èze may sound fun, you may be the kind of person who just likes to spend the day laying on the beach. If this sounds more your style, then Èze still has plenty to offer. Any traveler would be remiss to visit the French Riviera and not visit one of its golden beaches. What better way to spend the afternoon that staring at the aquamarine waters from your own private spot on one the many beaches along the coast of Èze. If you’d rather spend your days in the water, there are some great diving trips you can arrange in and around the village of Èze.
No matter how you intend on spending your family vacation, there is an awful lot to do in here. You’re so close to all the towns along the French Riviera. You can visit a different resort every day if you want to. Èze is so close to Monaco and Nice, you’ll have plenty of sites to visit. There are also some great catamaran rental companies in this small village. They'll take you to do some sight-seeing and make sure you get to check out all the highlights of the French Riviera. You may even want to take a full-day trip and hit all the local towns in a single day. Then, you can relax and put your feet up while you enjoy a traditional French dinner in the historic village of Èze.

Day 10 - Nice -> Monaco Monte-Carlo -> Èze -> Genoa (12.01.2023)
Today was a very full day. I had planned a lot.
In the morning I started with a trip to Monte-Carlo in Monaco. They say it is the city of billionaires. When you arrive by train, you notice already by the station that everything is very clean. When you get off, you can see the harbour with all its big yachts. But you can also see the city which is built on a slope. After that, of course, I wanted to see the famous Casino Monte-Carlo. But I only visited it from the outside. There is also a very nice beach (Plage du Larvotto) where I had a (very expensive) cappuccino in the morning sun - but the view was worth it. On the other hand there is a lot of construction going on in Monte-Carlo and you can see and hear that from all over the city.
Around noon I took the train to Èze sur mer. Everyone told me to take the bus and go to „Èze village“ on the hill, because there you can really see a very old historical village and cute little streets. But I didn’t have enough time so I stayed down by the sea. I mean, you always need a reason to come back, right? Next time I will definitely visit the old village on the hill. Other than that I had a nice stay there as well. I found a very good restaurant and had lunch there before heading back to Nice to take my backpack and head to Italy.
I just arrived in Genoa, Italy and I‘m going to stay here for the next three nights.
