she's glad for her hood. frigid rain beats down on gotham's roofs and there's already puddles that submerge noah's foot up to her ankle, pelting her shoulders with the keenness of hail. she tries not to stagger under the downpour when she's making decent ground, out of the upper westside district and towards crime alley, but she has a ways to go. she thinks about crashing at one of her safe houses- she has very few, but they're closer than home- but ultimately decides against it because of the STOLEN INFORMATION in her fist. the usb is only a few inches long, but it's enough for breach to put the sionis crime family to rest for good. she just needs to hold onto it long enough to put it to use.

of course, that's when it goes to shit.

FIRE CLIPS HER SHOULDER- they must have realized it was her, must of followed her all the way out here to put her down, and the shock of pain is enough to have her stumble when she launches into her next jump.

her foot doesn't make it to the rooftop. noah hits a fire escape on the way down but the rain makes it too slippery to get a decent hold. she falls about four stories, flat on her back, breath punched out of her lungs when she lands. the rain does a good job of washing away the red that pools under her shoulder, which she automatically clamps her hand over the wound to stem the bloodflow. the bullet had at least had the decently to go all the way through. she was FAR from being in the mood to go digging.

... and that's when she realizes the usb is no longer in her hand.

it's likely they've crossed paths once or twice before, but noah's bone-deep exhaustion prevents her from sifting through her memories to recall. she instead offers a bent elbow from her deep crouch on the above railing, fingers undulating in the aborted gesture of a wave. it's semi-friendly. mostly awkward. she kind-sorta-maybe wants to suffocate herself in her own cowl but manages to resist.

she makes one of many bad decisions that haunt her most nights and drops from her vantage point above, landing quietly in the street. her heart does a little stutter in her chest. she's nervous- but breach's outfit keeps her expression concealed, hiding the way her teeth dig into the lip. she thinks maybe she should say something before she gets gassed with pollen or whatever else. she releases a tinny breath of air, a mock of a sigh. might as well BITE THE BULLET.

SHE'S TIRED. more than she has any right to be, a hoarse grunt punching her chest as she drags herself out of the west river. it's her first time away from gotham since running away, since becoming nightingale and so far things are going- swimmingly.

it's a joke. she's soaked head to toe, and has to wrench the mask off of her face with a hiss of air to drag in a painful breath, ribs vehemently PROTESTING the movement of her lungs. what she wants to do is press her face in the asphalt and cry. instead she stands up, pulling her shirt away from her body to wring out some of the river-stink clinging to her clothes. the water patters quietly onto the ground. she realizes she's shivering, her fingers blue.

of course. it's the middle of the night, winter, and noah couldn't manage to hold her ground long enough to stay out of the water. and now the assailant's gotten away, and she's got nothing to show for her whole trip. it's demeaning and a little more than just a little pathetic. when she spins around to pick up her mask, she sees a shadow near the water. her whole body tenses.

it feels downright stupid to ask, but up until just a moment ago, noah had just assumed she'd been ALONE, " . . . is anyone there? "

another noah psa: her parent's weren't actually concerned for her, or helicopter-parenting. the saw noah's injury as an opportunity to test their renewing cells. and if it hadn't of worked out, it would have just been another tragedy. but it did. and her parent's kept a keener eye on her than she previously thought, hence the blood testing.

they wanted to keep the state as uninvolved as possible. they wanted noah as much in their control as they could manage for observational purposes. for testing. to them, noah was a successful experiment. the only reason they hadn't gone after her when she fled to gotham is because they got what they wanted from her, which was the opportunity to steal and study her blood.

as for how her ability functions, if she is incapacitated or otherwise in pieces she will regenerate from the largest remaining part of herself. her cell replication functions at a frankly concerning rate, able to replace whole body parts and organs and whatnot. she knows this at a subconscious level as she has been injured in the past ONCE before at that level of severity. but she doesn't seek out such injuries. dying it painful.

noah usually buys her lunch when she's out grabbing coffees for the remaining staff, she knows the morning shift is brutal for some of them but for noah it's clockwork. a schedule she follows with unnerving exactness. she'd packed a granola bar, a cheese stick, and a sandwich today because her co-worker linda rung to let her know that they're extremely short-staffed. the other two employees due to come in both called out. it'd just be noah and linda.

and she doesn't mind, really.

a busy day means it'll go quicker. her mind'll be filled with less useless thoughts when she goes out on patrol. but she also realizes she can't leave linda at the library on her own, ergo no coffee trip. it stings little. it sours her mood, AND her appetite. lunch comes and goes. she notices that one of their visitors has been here since that morning, and noah swings by with her granola bar.

" you should eat something, " she says, " we have water too, if you need it. "
