Lydia allowed his question to hang in the air for a moment, but only because she was trying to decipher his true intention behind asking it to begin with. In times before, she had merely been asked because people her age that it would be funny to make fun of the Deetz' claim that their house was haunted. She never took them seriously and they hated that she didn't fall prey to their attempts at lousy harassment. This kid though, something felt different about his question. It almost felt genuine, like he wanted her to admit it was all a hoax and that ghosts weren't real. ❝ Why do you want to know? ❞ She asked him first.

@sadtempo sent: 🌿 ( for lydia )
Brown eyes wandered upwards until they landed upon the mistletoe dangling above her head. Most holidays traditions were stupid to Lydia, but this had to be the dumbest of all. How did a dead branch correlate to kissing someone? And why was it such a welcomed practice? It sounded a lot like a free ticket to assault someone, but Lydia didn’t expect the world to change on account of her beliefs.
“Sorry, I’m.. Jewish.” She lied, hoping the disconnect from Christmas in general would be enough to let it slide. Just in case it wasn’t enough, Lydia quickly feigned a coughing fit into the palm of her hand. No one in their right mind would want to kiss her after that, right?

Lydia was a little bit stunned by his answer; in a good way. Other people might have said that a person died, their souls either went up to heaven or went down to rot in hell. Not many people would have suggested a more complicated route, which wasn't much of a route at all seeing as how they were stuck here. He was more open-minded than she previously realized, which might make opening up about being able to see the dead a little easier if she decided to do that.
A smirk was hidden behind her camera as she took one last snapshot of the stones. She then lowered the camera to rest against her chest, the strap making sure it didn't tumble to the ground when her hands let it go to rest by her sides. ❝ You just said it yourself that death is a little more complicated than going right to heaven. Sometimes souls are left behind . . . stuck . . . with nobody to talk to. Almost nobody. ❞
❝I don't know.❞ Jonathan replied honestly, the easy answer coming first. ❝Not the normal stuff. I mean, I think it's more complicated than people just going to heaven or hell for all eternity, you know?❞
While he was contemplating his own beliefs, none of them entirely solid, his mind reeled back to what Lydia had first said. ❝Wait — ❞ He watched her, busying herself with looking closer at the headstones. ❝Are you suggesting that you've talked to them after death? Like ghosts or something?❞
Had she said this to him a year ago, he might've brushed it off and thought that she was crazy. After witnessing another dimension, with echos of the world that they were already in, he couldn't deny the fact that there was likely more that he didn't know about.

I was thinking about this on the bus home
Before you know the truth about toonjuice being a drad guy, and after you've met a handful of his disguises
Seeing Mr beetleman again, you stare at him for a moment, as he's attempting to fix the sink in the Deetz kitchen
You ask "Do you have a kid or something? One of Lydia's classmates look like you"
he panics for a second before pulling you into a side hug, much your surprise
"Betty? She's my- my niece, good kid, but me? I don't got any rug rats to call my own, no wife or husband neither, completely single, got plans tonight? Cuz I don't♡"
You gingerly pull away and leave without responding, alittle shaken from this bold interaction
"Smooth"
Beetlejuice's head turns 180 to see the kid behind him "Lyds! How Long have you been there?"
She giggles "Long Enough to know you're Betty's uncle"

❝ Sometimes I want to be a ghost, too. ❞ That spoke volumes about what she really felt, of course. It hinted that she thought life would be a lot better if she weren't alive, even if that meant being trapped in the afterlife, the same as the Maitlands.

❝ From what I understand, yes, it does. ❞ Lydia didn't know the extent of those rules and, from what she realized about the Maitlands, they didn't seem to have a complete picture either. They didn't even know how to be ghosts; you know, the whole haunting part of it anyway. They had cut holes in sheets to freak out her stepmother for crying out loud!
Lydia folded her arms over her chest, black sleeves hanging loosely down by her elbows. ❝ Rules follow you even in death. I think it has to do with the order of things. ❞
♡ — steve harrington, #1 babysitter.
steve nodded, like they were having a normal conversation about the weather and not, like, the state of the afterlife. his currentlife was nothing if not interesting, at the very least.
"right, well. that's good i guess."
he chuckled at lydia's last words. as if he could just choose when he'd... y'know. he'd come too close too many times for comfort, thanks. he'd almost rather not see it coming. less stressful, that way.
but then something else that she'd said caught his attention. "wait, the afterlife has rules?"

@fullbones said: nothing is all good or all bad. life is messier than that.
"God, you sound like my father." Rolling her eyes, Lydia crossed her arms over her chest. He was right, of course, but she wasn't about to admit that to the likes of him. She knew that life wasn't just black and white, but instead a spectrum of greys and nothing was ever as simple as it seemed. But the fact that he'd said it in almost the exact way her Dad would've was what made her prickly.

❝ I've felt a pull to the DARKER SIDE of life for a very long time now. So much so that I was close to becoming a ghost myself. ❞ Lydia hadn't gone through with her plans of jumping off the bridge, but she had written a letter explaining how she felt and what she planned on doing so that she could join the Maitlands in the AFTERLIFE. She had imagined that death would be better than life.

TUMBLR TEXT POSTS PROMPTS PART 2 | "Hey, girl. Plagued by terrifying visions?" ( from dawn for lydia ♡ ) asked by @chaos--mode
❝ They aren't visions as much as they are unfortunate visits by the ghost with the most — so he calls himself. I think he's just a clown in need of serious dental work. ❞ In the off chance that Betelgeuse was lurking in the shadows she really wanted to get that shot in. He really had no sense of boundaries.

❝ I enjoy taking photographs of what I find to be peculiar, sometimes odd. What's better than normal than being completely odd and otherworldly? ❞ Lydia took a moment to observe the photograph that had expelled from the camera and fully developed by now. The oddity in question was sarcasm on her part, a picture that she had taken of Eddie and his friends goofing around between classes. ❝ You can keep this one, ❞ she offered the photo up to him.

❝ The Overlook Hotel - why does that sound familiar? ❞ Lydia chewed on the inside of her cheek as she thought about the different articles she had read on unsolved cases and alleged paranormal activities. ❝ I think I read about it somewhere. Remind me what happened again. ❞

❝ I swear it's like you were going 100 miles an hour in that thing and didn't manage to hit anybody. ❞ Lydia didn't know who drove around in a car like that anyway, at least, not around here. Finding herself way too tempted for her own good, she raised her camera back up and snapped a picture of it. She didn't even bother asking if it was okay.

❝ I don't know, ❞ the noirette thought to herself with a click of her tongue against the roof of her mouth. He stood only a few inches high but she didn't even find that trusting enough, let alone a whole six feet tall, give or take a few inches. ❝ I think you better stay put for the time being. ❝ Make no mistake, if you say his name THREE TIMES, I'll do something worse to you than he can ever conjure up. ❞ Lydia wasn't absolutely NOT in the mood to play "how to put the undead clown back in the box" knowing how spiteful and vengeful he would be since they had sent him to the Netherworld after letting him out the first time. It was hard to get rid of him as it was. She didn't want a chance at round two.
